So I did the extreme and I created what I like to call Dell Ryzen Optiplex. Gutted everything out of the case, put in a ryzen micro atx board, ryzen 5 1600 @ 4ghz, 16 gigs off ddr4 at 3000mhz, ssd's, and added a R9 Nano for my video card. Spliced wires for the front usb ports and power button and it turned out phenomenal. Absolute sleeper pc lol. Looks like a normal dell on the outside, inside is completely custom. By far my favorite build ever.

    - Dell / HP / Lenovo
    - i7 or Xeon 8 threader plus do a quadroople duper boot: XP / 7 / 8 / 10 / Linux
    - Haswell is excellent because it supports so many different operating systems very easily
    - GPU: RX 8GB or GTX 6GB
    - Stock Up Now on extra boards because they dont last forever and they eventually pop
    - modded side panel - if your lazy af and not picky you can go to the hardware store and buy a sheet of thick clear plastic plexiglass cut it with a hacksaw and simply attach with masking tape
    - yup, old school DVD Drives FTW
    - yup, if you want to you can dremel out the rivets and remove the hard drive cage, then you can plug in a longer video card, plus the build is gonna look more beastly, without the hard drive cage to make it easier you can use smaller 2.5 size SSD's and 2.5 Laptop Hard Drives and attach them with an adapter bracket just below the DVD Drives or along the floor of the case with tape, its ok to improvize and fun 🙂

I work at a non-profit used computer store, and we get everything donated to us. I found an Optiplex 7020 with a upgraded power supply and a gtx 970. I put a cheap ssd that we had sitting around in it and all of the highest amount of ram we had, 24GB of ddr3. It worked pretty well. Then about a month ago, I came across an Optiplex 9020. It had a much better processor in it. A core i7, 4790. So I put the two together to make one awesome gaming PC. I paid about $150 to my nonprofit all together. I can play most modern games on medium to high at 1080p, and 5 year or older games completely maxed out. Though I am thinking about upgrading the gtx 970, but it doesn't seem like there are any cards out there that are not at least $200 to $300 which are that better than the 970 at least in my use case. Also I might bottleneck the 4790, though most of the games I run, I never max out the CPU. I was just messing around overclocking it. The whole computer is pretty loud, which is a downside. I am trying to think of a way to make it quieter while still pushing it. I applied new thermal paste on the CPU of course, but I guess I could take apart the 970 and re-apply it's thermal paste, but that seems like more work than I would like to do. Any suggestions are welcome.

I love the concept of the video as well as how professionally it was produced! However, every time I run into an optiplex video of yours, I can never seem to find a deal even close to what you've found on eBay for a used tower/mini tower. "$100" for the i5-4570 model with 16gb of ram and a 1tb HDD is nearly impossible to find. Best i'm seeing currently is $110 and that model has half the ram and a 250gb HDD. Upgrading the ram and hard drive to match what is in the video would cost an additional $40+. I love these videos and think they are extremely helpful in teaching new consumers to spend wisely on their first rigs, but I think one off bargains that are difficult to replicate should have their own videos. People are going to have to make cuts on their upgrades (most likely not upgrading the PSU [the least necessary in many newcomer's eyes]) when they realize what they initially saved won't be enough and they want to be gaming asap rather than waiting on another paycheck. I hope this comment is well received and I very much look forward to your next video!

🙂 it mite be cheaper to get it in pieces, look for the exact oem model you like, get the one that has no ram no cpu no drives, totally stripped, you really only need the board and the case if you like the case. Plan b look for the models that have a crappy pentium or i3, they should go cheaper, they you buy the cpu separately. Me personally thats how I bought the last several HP Desktops really cheap, they had these crappy pentium and i3 cpus. I rebuilt them buying them Xeon cpus and ram and hard drives, brands and models that i like.

A great alternative is the Dell Precision T1700, which is almost identical to the Optiplex 9020, but with a different front panel on the case. They come with power supplies that have a single 6-pin PCI-E power supply and run quite well with the Haswell Xeons. You can get the 4C8T versions for less money than the i7-4770s.

@@MrSamadolfo Ive yet to see any 1080 p drains due to the 1650 super only having 4 gb of vram. It uses gddr6 instead of the gddr5 that is on the 1660.

Got a Dell with i5 2400 8gb ram for 75 USD, added a 2tb hdd and 120gb ssd for 75 USD. Also got a rx560 for 75 USD. Full hd 60hz 23 inch monitor for 25 usd. Headset 10USD, mouse 3USD and so in total with a little gpu over clocking I built a super cheap system that beats my friends 800USD gaming laptop

Could you technically add on some led fans and make it look epic?

    • @terrapinflyer273

As long as they're the right size I don't see why not. Minimal power consumption for LEDs... Just want to make sure the connectors are correct. You can always buy converters to match them up. But, if you want active or passive control of fan speed, that's something else to dive into. I have molex connectors for my fans, and somehow the control knobs on my case work w them lol. No idea how. But the lights are busted on the one. Also, no idea why! But ol' 2009 Frankenputer gets the job done w no complaints.

This may be a dumb question, and I apologise in advance. Build an all new PC in the optiplex case? I do have some building experience (built 2 PCs) but never in an oem case so unaware of any hiccups/complications that could occur. Really wanna build a super sleeper PC and love the optiplex case.
To clarify: I wanna keep ALL drive bays so basically a new PSU, and Mobo, CPU, gpu, ddr4 ram

🙂 sure, places like freegeek and craigslist sell oem empty cases, the bolt pattern usually matches MicroATX, besides the case its good to have a bag of extra case screws bolts nuts

Good video and nice build.. BUT.. I wouldn't go with a 4570 cpu in 2020.. You can find deals on non k i7 4790 cpu's for $100.

Thanks for making this video! $400-500usd is the absolute max budget I have for a do-it-all gaming and digital art PC. (At least initially.)
I was considering an Optiplex build, but it seems it doesn't make much sense if you intend to go past that initial $400-ish investment in the future.
It might make more sense for me to just build more or less the same thing from scratch instead for that same budget.
(The difference in shipping costs saved via Amazon Prime will probably pay any difference in price off anyway)

The cpu is a pretty bad bottleneck, and I noticed you weren't mentioning it. Like look at the 1% lows and 0.1% lows on the new games. That's a clear sign of a weak cpu and I woulldn't advise anyone to get one. Just pay 100$ for the cpu and motherboard and you'll be fine.

So I kinda went a little further with my Optiplex 3020. I just upgraded the cpu to a i7 4790k Devils Canyon. Next I upgraded the gpu from a GTX960 to a RTX2060 KO Ultra. However, my computer is powering off when running games for longer than 5mins. I think my 500w psu is too small for this gpu and cpu. I am upgrading to a 700w Antec soon, so hopefully that fixes the issue. Everything runs perfect with the GTX960.
