Doggone Brian, you just saved me over $300 in ordering upgraded parts for some old laptops I have laying around. I'm definitely gonna give this a shot. If it works, I'm gonna donate the laptops to some low-income families so it can help with their children. Thanks M8! You're the best!

You could also use the Rufus program to make a Linux Xubuntu or Linux Mint xfce flash drive. Xubuntu runs really well & extremely fast on old computers. For example at idle it may only use between 9% or 10 percent of memory on a machine with 4gb of ram. Although Windows 10 runs nicely on my old pc, at idle it is still using 30-40% of physical memory. If you're giving away the laptops load on some simple but fun games like extremetuxracer, and Libre Office comes as standard.

Make a Linux Mint installation disk and save yourself and the kids a lot of heartache. Then the faster machines can be upgraded to more elaborate versions of Ubuntu if desired and the slower machines will still be absolutely capable for network computing, internet, etc. You may need to use a piece of software called Rufus to create the installation disc. Definitely don't create an android box for them unless you're green and live on Mt. Crumpet. Your heart is in the right place and that's the best part, kindness is the most important thing in the world.

Windows is garbage, they are the police snooping around in your life. If you can only use only Windows and not benefit from other OS's, then you the problem, not the person who is making the video. I like Windows for gaming only. Windows isn't secure, not at all. The advantage is in taking old hardware and making it useful again. My laptop is too old to take Windows 10. I don't feel like investing hundreds of dollars in new hardware (particularly now). The older the operating system gets, the less it's supported by software manufacturers. In the case of browser software, as security technology advances, it won't be supported by the browsers I'm stuck with in my older version of Windows. Eventually, things like online banking will become impossible with that software.
By installing a brand new, shiny Android OS, I can use a more modern browser. My hardware isn't quite so obsolete now, and just got an extension on its lifespan. I'll take it!

I would run Android on a Raspberry Pi since it has an ARM CPU and more likely to be able to use the Apps I want. For a old PC I would toss in a SSD and max out the RAM then toss on Linux such as Debian or Arch. If it's a real old PC such as a late Pentium 4 I would run FreeBSD or use it as a Appliance system such as pfSense or a simple file server. If it's one of those crummy budget Laptops that can only support up to 8GB I would just toss on a minimal install of Debian, toss on i3 or Awesome WM and use it for Programming Micro Controllers or just strip it down and rob the LCD and touch pad from it.

    • @Swanicorn
      @Swanicorn 4 года назад

Cuz a laptop is way powerful than a phone and one can play graphics intensive games on these instead of using an Android emulator or buying a flagship phone. You'll be surprised to know how many people do that.

@@TKevinBlanc You definitely need to mention how old. Like 10-15 years old or 5 years old? You can get things like Elementary or Mint working fine on a 5-10 year old laptop but older than that and we are into 32bit processor territory for which we can't use modern Linux.

I don't have a weak enough computer that this would make sense on, but I'll definitely try this in VirtualBox!
This would probably breath new life to those old netbook thingies, that mostly just came with Windows XP, or some crappy basic Linux. Also on old laptops that still had like 256/512 MB RAM. Although those would probably still be painfully slow, just like old smartphones with that much RAM...

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video as I've been wanting to do this on several old laptops, MacBooks, and PCs collecting dust. I also have a unique MacBook Pro (Late 2008 with some Early 2009 features) and a compact Windows 10 NetBook/tablet that are the most frequently used. Curious to know, is possible to install an Android OS on Macs with properly formatted and partitioned drives as well? If not it is not, are there any minimum requirements you recommend PC/laptops to have for problem free operation Android Pie once installed?

I remember an episode of Black Adder the Third, where Baldrick sang the praises of those brave Ludite rebels smashing their loomes. To which Black Adder replied; "Although I've always been happy to wear cotton Baldrick, I've never found the need to find out exactly how it works." Well isn't that the way most people look at computer operating systems? I mean, isn't that why most of us use Linux Mint, Ubuntu, or even Windows 10?

Ok so people need to be brought up to speed on the issue I said earlier.
I just found out what was causing the issue - and what it is, is the UEFI code is not compatible with older computers that use Legacy version in the bios. So this means you must find a way to turn off UEFI when writing the OS to a usb stick in order to make it compatible with older bios versions. and Brian you should of said something to that affect as it would of saved me a whole lot of time in troubleshooting the problem..So -Please cover all aspects and full procedures as to when dealing with UEFI based Bioses...
Part of what I was having issue is using a linuxed based usb writing tool and not rufus which was where the problem first started.
Kit Kat ran ok but being a version that google dose not support any more got me thinking.
You do a great job in showing these installments But need to be a lot more clear on how to handle microsofts glitch on UEFI systems.

That's a good idea. I have about 40, identical, IBM Lenovo ThinkCenter computers. They were "host" computers from a restaurant franchise that I worked for. I replaced the machines with the new "upgraded" ones. My boss said I could do whatever I want with the old ones, just get them out of the stores. I ended up keeping 104 computers, most of which were in working condition. The hard drive in each has "password protected" Pulse software that I couldn't remove or "get around". I recently found out that I can format the drive with diskpart. So far I have successfully made an emulation game machine with about 4,000 games from various early systems. But thanks to you, now I have a way to put a free OS on them. Any other ideas that I can use some 10 year old desktop machines for?

Can it create restore points like Windows? Is the flash drive needed to boot, or could it be used for this purpose later? That's all my questions. Thanks!

I have an old notebook that I use only to watch movies and stream video on a TV, which was slow as fuck, and completely revived after I replaced the hdd for a €40 sdd. Now it runs Windows 10 absolutely fine so I don't see the need for this.
If you're struggling with an old notebook that is painfully slow, that should be the first upgrade to try instead of this completely experimental approach, it's going to make a massive difference.
