I met the guy very briefly in 2017 in Dallas and only managed a few generic compliments about '2016 and felt really silly after. Great stuff, and what a great contribution to documenting the dev part of the fantastic Doom story we got to be a part of. Thanks!!
There was a time where you didnt hear any of his interviews now Hugo's all over the place. Crazy
Hugo channels the same energy as John Carmack talking about tech. I could hear them both all day!
hugo is the best game director ever
who else do that ? seriously ?
plenty of indie game devs that DO respect their small fanbase yet remain largely unknown.
@@georgedevries3992 Team cherry could learn something.
@@yogeshkandare3214 the thing is it’s literally just them, so they can’t as easily take breaks to talk to youtubers or watch streams of speedrunners or do play throughs of their own game and answer questions. Also a lot of those questions would be about the story and they’ve made it clear they don’t want to answer those
Hugo is the best western game director. Miyazaki is the best eastern game director. And uncoincidentally, both are uncompromising in holding the player accountable in an old school fashion.
@@Ismael-kc3ry atleast some updates can be done, hollow knight gave them success enough that they could hire extra staff, but they just stay silent, just like the guys at Scorn smh.
Damn, we are to lucky to have someone like Hugo healming Doom. Hugo is so awesome and humble I am just greatful that we have his passion in charge of Doom
Respect to these two for speaking their minds and saying what they really think without fear of causing offence.
Mayo is a fantastic leader for the community and Hugo is a brilliant game director - his openness and willingness to not only listen to but act upon the wishes of the community is revolutionary!
Keep doing what you're doing guys!👍
He gives such grounded, realistic answers. The point he made about "total creative freedom" made me think of him as the "Anti-Romero". In a sense, Daikatana was the product of "total creative freedom".
possesed cursed prowler? looks like ma man Hugo relly wants to make me feel advanced pain
Mad respect for Hugo, such a humble guy always liked how he compliments his team, not many devs does that. Huge Respect 🙏
Big props Mayo, in past interviews people interrupted Hugo a lot and now we can hear his full thoughts. Great interview.
So cool that you got to make this video and talk to Hugo at length like this. The guy just emanates excitement for all things Doom. :) Mad respect for him.
Doom 2022 : you snort powdered cokaine and diesel before every level, just to keep up
I bet meth + Doom Eternal would be a religious experience.
The way how Hugo says: "hold the player accountable". All I can think is: they're respecting the players abilities. They are saying: "yes this will be difficult, but we believe you can achieve it", which is awesome.
Mayo, you lucky bastard, talking to Hugo. You are both absolute legends. 🤘
That was amazing. In every interview Hugo doesn't beat around the bush and goes straight to the point of the discussion, super straightforward guy and allows people to see into a great lead developer's mind like himself
Hugo is a legend and id software is one of the few dev companies that i still respect. Its clear that they arent obsessed with money and that eternal is a passion project. One of the best games ive ever played.
Edit: Yes hugo is a coke fan!
I've just always liked how enthusiastic Hugo is about making a fun game, a lot of dev teams could learn from that
Imagine a possessed Armored Baron in one of the Tag 2 Master levels...
24:30 I've been wanting the answer for this question for a year now, thank you so much for asking it.
It's awesome to hear that Hugo builds gundam, a fellow Gunpla builder
Hugo is a gem in the industry. I can't imagine a better guy for Doom. I could listen to him talk about anything for hours. Great interview as well. You could hear your nervousness a bit in the beginning, but you found your flow and did a fantastic job. I really hope id gives him the keys to QUAKE next. (see that car reference?) Would love to see him tackle the Lovecraftian horror that made the first game so memorable. Hope they still have Trent's phone number.
Me when the title of the notification popped up just now: WHAT?! SMASHES LIKE BUTTON
That was a great video! Really cool to see you kinda working directly with the team. Armoured baron is the best new demon by far. I wonder if it would be too much to put it with a marauder, maykr and a couple of whippies.
Man that's fucking cruel
There's a special place heaven for these two titans.
Btw had no one noticed that he has a aperture science portal shirt. Hats of to you hugo
Oh! Hugo is a precious treasure! Willing to have a casual chat with fans, answer questions, and just be a bro! Him and Josh are great!
I can hear Hugo talk all day. Cannot wait for more games from him.
How impressive... Mayo playing at such a high level with a fourth of his screen covered. So sick.
In all seriousness, great interview!
The longer the lines about the Icon of Sin being on Earth are in the game, the stronger Hugo Martin will become.
didnt even realise i was halfway in, bless u mayo for this interview, great seeing someone talk about their career with such passion
Listening to hugo talk just makes me want to work for him
I love how casual you guys sound talking with each other.
Hugo's answer to "Coke or Pepsi" was like the final seal of awesome
01:07:50 Halo 1 has a nice moment like this in Assault On The Control Room where one of the soldiers turns and points at you when you show up to save them and says something like "It's him".
I can listen to these 2 for hours and never get bored.
I love the Aperture tshirt. It’s hilarious because I saw a car with an aperture sticker on the rear window on the way to work this morning listening to this 😂. I never see anything like that around here.
i love how you two have such a deep knowledje of the game if i ididnt know hes a dev id expect you two to be Esports comentators or something, like he isnt just stating facts about the game you two are discussing strategies theres something epic about a dev that loves his game so much
This is an absolutely amazing opportunity for you! Love it, I'm so proud of you man
So Hugo is easily my favorite person in the gaming industry. Unlike people like Niel Druckman or David Cage he owns up to things and feels like a well intent wholesome member of the community. Gaming needs more devs like him.
I LOVE the Armored Baron but I NEVER felt a moment where I didn't feel pressured to get a good skill shot on him without being punished in return for missing. Master Levels will make him great.
The sound of Hugo scratching his beard at 18:45 is oddly soothing, he should do asmr
There is an extra layer of Hugo being an important and awesome person when you realize Josh is on the call too like his personal bodyguard
not only is this man pushing the envelope on fps, he’s pushing the envelope on how to be a good developer. No one is allowed to say they are bad developers anymore because they do interviews like this to figure out what the community wants
Hugo's passion is clearly evident whenever he speaks. I really look forward to more from him and the team.
Ha! He's wearing an aperture laboratories shirt. Gotta love this guy for he appreciates other games along side DOOM and the fact that he's so nice and interacts with the community.
man you've come so far since The Science of Quan Chi! Keep crushing it dude.
