If you look at the video theory, there are different shots to communicate your message, from ultra-wide (long shots) to ultra macro (extreme close-up shots); therefore, zooming in and out is not made for recording video unless you want to look amateurish. On the other hand, zooming in and out after video compression will look terrible. Stick to the classy way of composing a video and avoid features that will make your video suck! I knew most of the stuff you presented, but you did a great job; well done!. Guys, don't forget to storyboard your ideas before shooting and only record what you need. Otherwise, it will take ages to go thru your content. I will produce a video clip using GoPro 10, ND filters + macro lenses + DJI 2 Gimbal camera + robot (Auto camera tracker) for the first time. My hypothesis is that this setting will be excellent and so portable ;-). After that exercise, I probably won't look back to DLSR/mirrorless video. Cheers, J.

Thank you very much! I shoot mostly videos (previously with Canon DSLRs using L telephoto lenses) and was about to give up on my RX10 iv and send it back. The video section of that guide does not start till page 200 and assumes knowledge of the previous 200 pages.
Just got this camera and have been searching for a complete tutorial, but only found bits and pieces. I like what you did but need a lot more to master this camera. Suggestions? (not good at manuals)
The most Important thing to teach/show the viewer is what memory card to buy to shoot 4kHD Vids. I read that if I used the USB power ON (& connect USB power cable on the side port), it would continue recording as long as I have space on the sd card. Can you offer some advice on how to set for continuous record (longer than 30 minutes)?

Hi Jay, better than the manual, thanks for your vodeo on this camera. In video it's often recommended to use 1/50 sec or 1/60 depending of the film rate. Is this also your recommendation? thanks.
Hi Patrick and yes I think the one over shutter method is "best practice". That is how I general film all my videos. Sometimes the lighting can make it difficult to do this though, and it can force the aperture to f/11 territory without a ND filter. In those cases, I let the shutter speed go up to whatever in order to maintain exposure. I rarely use a ND filter when testing cameras or lenses, but it's a must have tool for filming at the proper shutter speed in bright conditions. Jay
Thanks for your answer. I'm more and more interested by this RX. I've already A7 and some optics, but for travelling, often for my job, this one is very pleasant... My possible Christmas present... :o)
Very clear tutorial thanks. I want to take photos of the milky way but having trouble with any of the autofocus modes or manual. Can you give me some advice?
good Job thank you for this video. Do you experience "Recording Dialog window " after stop video recording ? I'm not sure is the camera or the SD card slow?
Hello, thanks! No, I have not experienced that when recording regular video. High frame rate mode does that though after you stop recording... what card you using?
Dumb question. The movie shooting mode shows “ch 1” and “ch2” when recording. What are these two channels? Im a new subscriber to your videos, and I really appreciate your tutorial style! Thank you!
Hello, Those are your audio channels. Left and right "stereo" for monitoring purposes... A visual indication of the audio being recorded, so you can see if it's to loud or not loud enough for example.
I set my main Pic button to take video. I want to change that back. I can't remember what position that was on the menu. Do you know where on the menu is the part that can change how the main button takes video or not?
Hi Jay, I’m a little curious that if you still have a Sony RX1R MK2 ? and what you think about these two cameras if you compare the lenses and overall quality? Thanks 😊
Hello, and no I do not have the RX1R II. I only had it for review, and the IQ was far superior than the RX10 IV, but this is due to the huge full frame sensor vs the much smaller 1" sensor found on the RX10 IV. You get incredible versatility the RX10 IV 24-600mm effective zoom unlike the RX1R II which has a fixed 35mm f/2 prime lens with no zoom.
Jay SonyAlphaLab A less used RX1R2 costs as much as a new RX10 IV here in Denmark. I only want to have a single camera. RX10 is very versatile, but in my opinion, it is only really usable in daylight, while RX1R2 can perform anytime anywhere. I mostly shoot my kids, some street and landscape. But I also really like to have a compact mega zoom that can catch some birds and wildlife. Total dilemma 😅
@@UfukSahinDenmark It is a total dilemma I agree ;) I always prefer to have my full frame camera with a fast prime lens, but it's just not practical a lot of the time. Sacrifices must be made, or a camera bag with lots of gear needs to be carried, or you get something like an RX10 IV and you always have something that can get a great shot at the cost of a smaller sensor which yields less depth of field and more noise in low light... You never get something for nothing my friend!
Well that is highly dependent on your situation honestly. I would try and have the shutter speed double whatever your recording frame rate is. So/ 1/50sec if you are recording at 4k/24p for example. The camera otherwise will be in continuous autofocus when recording video by default, so your good there. I would set the white balance to a fixed setting to match your conditions whether it be sunny or cloudy for example. You don't want to use AUTO WB, because it can fluctuate around. I would set the ISO to AUTO and probably just use shutter priority exposure mode within video mode. I hope that helps, Jay
You can only use the Video mode to do video. If you have the mode dial in S or A you will get a message stating it is invalid in that mode when you push the video button. If you have 4k selected or 120p selected in your video mode setting and go back to photo mode you are stuck in standard steady shot and have to go back and change your video settings to be able to use active or active intelligent stabilization in photo mode. That is a pain in the ass if you are shooting video and stills in the same shoot because you need the advanced stabilization beyond 300 mm.
Hello, Video does work in A, S, P, and Auto Modes as well as the Movie mode when set to 4k video quality. You must have some other setting active that is causing the error, but I'm not sure what it is, sorry...
Very timely info. I still have the mk2 cuz live out of a backpack on the road and prefer the most compact size. Is there anything presented in this lesson that is not a available on the mk2??
The menu system is significantly different on the RX10 II, but most of the features and settings are the same with that camera, yes. Here is the RX10 II help guide for more detailed information: docs.sony.com/release/Help_4574925111.pdf I hope that helps, Jay
It seems that you are not aware of the possibility to zoom fast by pushing the zoom button fast to its end, and to zoom slow by pushing it a very little. This strangely does not appear in the manual but has been told to me by a repairor. Therefore, I set it on fast, and then go slow pushing the button just a little.
4:21 - one can go from 600mm to 1200mm zoom in video?! 😳 Renting this camera this week, can't wait to test that nugget. Also curious if continuous AF still works in clear image zoom.
Yes, af still works and clear image zoom will work when recording video and give you an "effective 1200mm zoom" with video, but it's really just cropping in. It looks really good though, so a great feature nonetheless. You can zoom in even more if you have the digital zoom enabled. See here: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1720/v1/en/contents/TP0001584368.html?search=clear%20image%20zoom
you cannot use spot focus when moving beyond optical zoom into clear image zoom as it defaults to area focus. the camera focus works best in optical zoom.
Jay, the camera has no time lapse mode. I was thinking I could shoot video at low frame rate and then just speed it up on the video exit software, what do you think ?
Depending on where the focus is, it will change when zooming if the camera feels like it needs to. I'm not exactly sure what clip you are referring to, but the camera is in continuous AF mode when recording video, so it is subject to change depending on what the camera sensor sees in front of it. It also depends on what focus area you are using. If it's small or large will make a tremendous difference in what the camera decides to focus on.
Thank you. I watched more of your reviews and get better ideas about camera focusing and basically have my question answered. Overall focusing looks quite good. I have another question. You did test while shooting cars on highway but you are quite far away from the highway. I also seen tests done during Sony event, shooting Hawk, flying toward the camera, it looks to me it is too extreme, I mean far end, close end and a speed of the object. Sometime I am filming sailing boats from another boat and missed a lots of great shoots when boat is coming toward me and it is getting really close like 15-30 feet, camera goes out of focus. This is supposedly be the best moment which I will not have. I wonder if you can do test, while being close to the road like 20 - 50 feet away, and see how good camera can track cars coming toward the camera and away from the camera. Best if this is local road, where cars moving 25-35 mph. Highway is kind of too fast, but can be done on highway, if there is no spot on local road is available. Just be careful when filming cars, people may stop and come asking why you filming them in case you on the local road. Don't like you to get in trouble :). Thank you much.
No, but you can capture a photo from a video clip MENU → (Playback) → [Photo Capture]. I created a tutorial on it with a different Sony camera here: ruclips.net/video/HCp0ixyS1eE/видео.html
You can't. You can extract photos from the video footage after the fact though. See here: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1720/v1/en/contents/TP0001593191.html?search=photo%20capture
Hi Jason I can only record in 24p with 4k and only with 50p in full hd with my rx10 iv. I can’t select 60p or 30p, somehow. And neither can I select 120p in fhd. Do you have an idea how to fix that?
Tried using video mode last night (1st attempt) and not very successful at all! I had been taking some shots at night of xmas illuminations using a tripod and shutter priority to do long exposures and most of these came out great. I then tried pressing the movie button and panning slowly around to get a short video clip. First it took a second to focus and then as I panned around the image was blurred as the focus kept getting lost and refocussed! A far worse result than my camcorder! What did I do wrong? Are there specific settings which help to maintain focus while panning or is the camera simply not up to it? Havent tried in daylight - this was night video. Cant remember exact settings but as I had gone straight from taking pictures I probably had the camera on Shutter priority and flexi spot focussing
Yeah, focusing at night is very difficult, because the camera needs contrast to focus. A lot of times the lights will mess up the focus and the camera will hunt. For these types of clips I would try setting the focus manually then panning and the focus will not change during the pan. This is a more advanced move you can take when the camera is struggling for one reason or another. The flexible spot focus also make it a lot harder for the camera to focus when panning, so wide mode probably would have worked better in that case also... I hope that helps Jim ;)
Hi. I was wondering how you can selfie movie record yourself? Obviously the display doesn't allow you to see yourself. Is this done with a mobile device?
the sony app is absolutely terrible and will not suffice as a remote for vlogging at all. Vlogging is probably this camera's one weakness unless you're going to be behind it.
@Jason. Thank you for the video. I have the same camera, but in the the Record Setting I can't find the option 60p50M. Same file format as in the video. Do you know why??
Thanks for the comments Scott :) I think Sony is making a APS-C bridge camera that is similar to the RX10-series, and will announce it at some point in the future ;) I just have that feeling.... The market is clearly there and so is the technology! Jay
Yes, you can very faintly hear the zoom motor when it's very quite. It's not completely silent, however when there is some background noise I don't notice it much at all.
I've just done another test and noticed the audio whilst zooming is becoming muffled for duration of the lens extending or retracting. I can better describe the sound of the zoom motor as a scraping slurping sound (It may or may not be from the motor) Please could you do a zoom test indoors in a quiet room and confirm what sound is picked up in the video?
That lens coating helps with glare and contrast, but does not affect the color. Your White balance is what affects the color. Have you tried playing with that in the Fn = Function Menu?
@@Jason_Hermann Yes. I tried that and can't get an accurate color balance. There is no color separation; it's muddy. There's definitely something wrong when a 10 year old iPhone has better color than an $1800 camera Sony needs to hire people that aren't color-blind.
That is odd John. After extensive testing I never found the images to be muddy other than when shooting at very high ISO values. If you check out my full review you can see all the sample photos and in my opinion they are fantastic considering the 1 inch sensor size. www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-rx10-iv-review-real-world-perspective-lots-of-testing-and-tutorial-videos/
You can't do that at the same time, but you can extract a photo from a video after you record it using this feature: ruclips.net/video/HCp0ixyS1eE/видео.html
I found it! You need to enable the dual record feature and then while recording video you can press the shutter button to capture a phot... helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1720/v1/en/contents/TP0001582274.html?search=capture

I can only record in 24p with 4k and only with 50p in full hd with my rx10 iv. I can’t select 60p or 30p, somehow. And neither can I select 120p in fhd. Do you have an idea how to fix that?
Got stuck on the same thing changed from PAL to NTSC fixes this problem but it does reformat your memory card.
Can you change the zoom speed
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the reply. I think I need to practise a lot more!
My Sony rx20 camera LCD screen is not displaying why connected to HDMI port, why could be the right setting for it.
Thant is how it works... you lose the screen when the HDMI is hooked up on a lot of cameras...
@@Jason_Hermann thanks for the answer, any solution to it, or will it display if I decide to use USB port instead?
Jason, I bought mine in 2021 and my option is only... (see attached screen shot...
Excellente vidéo. Un, seul dommage c est en anglais .
Thank you and that is the language I speak ;)
@@Jason_Hermann no problem y understand with the images. Thank you your vidéos are very good.
Thers is limited 30 min on video shoot, or unlimited video length shooting ?
Yes there is a 30min limit on individual clips...
@@Jason_Hermann thnks
@@Jason_Hermann How about if the camera is plugged in? (Thanks in advance)
question to everyone: can I use the sony RX10 m4 with a sandisk 256 GB SD card ( class 10, U3) ? or is the 128GB maximum?
How do u get it to play slow motion on the display ?
You need to be using High Frame Rate Mode. 120p is not high frame rate mode, and will appear normal on the screen.
Found a way to use the d pad and hit the slow motion button to slow it down when it plays, its a work around.
@Jason. Thank you for the video. I have the same camera, but in the the Record Setting I can't find the option 60p50M. Same file format as in the video.
Do you know why??
Your camera might be set to the pal frame rate standard, go into setup and find “ntsc/pal selector”
Hi there what file format do the movies save in is that an mp4??
Can I set clear image zoom in photograph mode or is it just confined to video. I ask because I can’t find this option in camera settings 1
Yes, you can use Clear Image Zoom on both video and photography in the auto modes...
Jay SonyAlphaLab I can’t find it in the camera one setting. Can you point me in the right direction please?
Only works for jpeg. If you shoot in raw you can’t use the clear image zoom.
guys i need your help. when i plug in my headphones in the camera it has no sound. i've tried everything but i couldnt hear anything. can you help me?
Pourquoi est ce que, rarement mais sûrement, la vidéo en cours de tournage s'arrête brusquement, pour les deux appareils RX10 III et IV ?
Hi I’m in manual in movie mode on the RX 10 -4 and it won’t let me go below 1/125 shutter speed. do you know if this is true ?
Minimum shutter speedfor video is 2x frame rate, so 60p would require at least 1/120 shutter speed👍
I had the III I loved it but the images were just not as good as the 6500. I played with the IV and wow its fast. It just needs a bigger sensor
Thanks for the comments Scott :) I think Sony is making a APS-C bridge camera that is similar to the RX10-series, and will announce it at some point in the future ;) I just have that feeling.... The market is clearly there and so is the technology!
Jay
Wow, that would make me think about selling the 6500 and lens.....maybe
Jay SonyAlphaLab huh
my record settings have 2 options?
Have you noticed the video picking up sound of the camera zooming in and out?
Yes, you can very faintly hear the zoom motor when it's very quite. It's not completely silent, however when there is some background noise I don't notice it much at all.
Would you say it's an issue to worry about?
I've just done another test and noticed the audio whilst zooming is becoming muffled for duration of the lens extending or retracting. I can better describe the sound of the zoom motor as a scraping slurping sound (It may or may not be from the motor) Please could you do a zoom test indoors in a quiet room and confirm what sound is picked up in the video?
Here is a quick test I did ruclips.net/video/dBR2ypr8MpY/видео.html
No, but it can effect audio in some cases if very quiet.
I think that the bluish green tint on the lens is literally destroying the picture quality of this camera.
That lens coating helps with glare and contrast, but does not affect the color. Your White balance is what affects the color. Have you tried playing with that in the Fn = Function Menu?
@@Jason_Hermann
Yes. I tried that and can't get an accurate color balance.
There is no color separation; it's muddy.
There's definitely something wrong when a 10 year old iPhone has better color than an $1800 camera
Sony needs to hire people that aren't color-blind.
That is odd John. After extensive testing I never found the images to be muddy other than when shooting at very high ISO values. If you check out my full review you can see all the sample photos and in my opinion they are fantastic considering the 1 inch sensor size. www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-rx10-iv-review-real-world-perspective-lots-of-testing-and-tutorial-videos/
did anyone else giggled at " p mode"?
Of course ;)
Idont have 60p

@@Jason_Hermann and how to active capture photo with recorde video the same time
You can't do that at the same time, but you can extract a photo from a video after you record it using this feature: ruclips.net/video/HCp0ixyS1eE/видео.html
@@Jason_Hermann I can because I used it before, but I don't know why the feature disappeared
I found it! You need to enable the dual record feature and then while recording video you can press the shutter button to capture a phot... helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1720/v1/en/contents/TP0001582274.html?search=capture
