Shooting HFR or super slowmotion video with the sony rx10iv and how i set my camera up to do it. WHEN POSSIBLE KEEP THE ISO DOWN AT ISO 100 TO KEEP THE QUALITY AT ITS BEST.
Thanks again Stuart for these videos I literally stumbled on the HFR mode this weekend shooting stills at a ‘drifting’ event. I hadn’t realised an HFR shooting setting could be added to the Fn menu and watched this vid a few times before I heard you say to add ’Shooting Mode’ to the Fn menu - I’d been looking for another selection with HFR prefix [there ain’t one ! ]. So, thanks again, great resource - great when starting out with this amazing camera.
keep it down on iso 100 if you can. shoot outside and try 250 fps and 500fps is best , 1000fps is tricky to make it look good as its reduced resolution to get that frame rate then its upscaled to 1080p. i use sony vegas for editing and add a little sharpening to tweak the image quality. then it looks great :) hope that helps
Very informative video. Thanks for this. One remaining question I have that you may be able to answer: is the focus locked down when the slow motion is being buffered, or will autofocus (or manual focus) continue to work during the buffering time so that a moving object that I am tracking will stay in focus through the entire clip, even if it is approaching or moving away from the camera. Thanks!
Good video; very helpful. Do you happen to know if one can initiate HFR capture in either start or end trigger modes using Sony’s Play Memories phone app?
really annoying that youtube doesnt always notify me about comments so sorry its taken 2 years. sorry to say i have not used that because using imaging edge it might be possible i will have to try it.
Thanks for the great video! Question: After you press record while END TRIGGER is selected, how many seconds before will it have taken into account for the slow motion? Say in a archery competition I want to record an arrow and I wait until the moment it’s released… I then press record as fast as possible (and it takes me 1 second to actually press it) but how far back in time will the END TRIGGER take into consideration to actually slow motion?
The way end half records as does end full which is 3.5 and 7 seconds is it loops so once the moment has happened you then push record. So you set the shots up. Set the camera then the arrow fires and hits the target then you push record
I would use "half recording" for an action, I'm waiting for, but I don't know when exactly it's going to start. End recording - for planned actions. Start recording is, for me, least usefull. BTW I don't have RX10, but I have a Sony handycam with 3s 240p buffer (very poor quality), and Fuji HS10 with 30s buffer even for 1000fps (but a very low resolution).
Hi Stuart, Is there any way to adjust iso in this mode, it's very dark for me when indoors and I can't see to lighten it without pushing the iso right up?
You can shoot fully manual iso fstop. Shutter all adjustable but you need to allocate shoot mode in the FN menu so you can swap it to manual in hfr mode
love the shots Stuart thanks. just got the sony rx 10 iv love it even now. can you give me more info on this camera please. I need sharpness and clarity to my pic's. like all of us I guess.
thanks. one thing people get confused about is sharpness and depth. if your image is to shallow in depth of field it can appear soft. but choosing f5.6 instead of f2.8 for example will bring more of the subject into focus and also giving you a sharper appearing image. but obviously sharpness can be achieved with a fast enough shutter speed so where if you shot a bird in flight at 1/320s it would probably be soft due to a little motion blur its still in focus but you really need to be at 1/1600s minimum to achieve a sharp focus. it takes a lot of practice to get good and experiementing is key learning from mistakes
I took the step and got the RX10IV because I was in need of one. What would you suggest for slow motion settings to get the blur of an airplane propeller?
dj estampida 7 seconds but most of the time i shoot 3 seconds because what ever im recording happens fast so ive captured it just watch how the slowmo guys work its the same situation
Hfr mode the camera becomes locked in zoom and shutter speed and fstop and iso. And af locked but you can adjust focus manually check out the slowmo guys videos even their phantom cameras are the same

Glad it helped love hfr mode
Enjoying the videos of the rx10 ...thanks mate
Thanks Alan
Btw, really good shots.
thankyou
thanks for the good info, I've been missing stuff w. rx10iii
Thanks for nice explanation and shots.
glad i could help if you need more just ask thanks for watching
Thank you Stuart. Definitely going to try some of this.

Hi, great stuff, you info is appreciated 👍
Euro 73 thankyou
Great video. You've given me another reason to get the RX10iv. It would be nice if Sony launched a RX10v with higher resolution HFR mode.
awesome and yes deffo

It is locked until you set up for the next shot
Ok, thanks very much!

The Balls shots are actually 1000 fps my mistake
Thanks for the great video!

Did you try any recordings with artificial light? I have problem with very grainy video, hence I have strong light I don't see grain in yours
With high frame rate. Light is important a sunny day or using a powerful light is important

You mean photos with prop blur. Around 1/200s is normally good.
Stuart James Photography day
Yes , exactly what I mean. I fell in love with that look when I saw a Red Bull air race video
Hi Stuart, love the videos! I thought I would try HFR. Set to end trigger. When I replay the video it runs backwards! Any ideas why?
thankyou for watching , um thats stumped me i have no idea why lol. you can reverse it in post after though but that is odd
@@sjm.photos thanks for your reply Stuart. I have just done the same with 'start trigger' setting. It is perfect!
I have just been messing around with settings and now it seems ok. No idea what I did!
@@dericklangman2352 was strange lol glad you have fixed it :) enjoy
What does the camera record in fps when it's not in slow motion (hfr mode)...and how long can you shoot in hfr...thanks
It does 100fps1080p hd and 4k 25fps
Nice one thanks mate. Btw is that Eastwell Manor at 12:04?
i think so. out the other side of ashford kent ?
Looks like an ufo behind the birds...
Can you do a Timelapse using the same camera?
if you plug in a trigger yes something like a pluto trigger
Bro ...how much longer this camera can shoot in 960 fps?
7 seconds , but i normally shoot half so 3.5 seconds is loads to capture stuff with it
How long is the maximum you can record in slow motion.
dj estampida 7 seconds but most of the time i shoot 3 seconds because what ever im recording happens fast so ive captured it just watch how the slowmo guys work its the same situation
no rolling shutter effect, well done sony
it works really well. but wish the resolution was higher for 1000fps
merci
thanks for watching
Can i zoom in on a project
sorry can you explain more ?
I notice the camera is static, can you not zoom in or out while using HDR video, thanks!!
Hfr mode the camera becomes locked in zoom and shutter speed and fstop and iso. And af locked but you can adjust focus manually check out the slowmo guys videos even their phantom cameras are the same
