Dip into the rustoleum watebased quart for a thicker seal
Just be aware, Borax is toxic to people and pets (and insects). Make sure animals and children can't get to the ornaments. Touching it shouldn't hurt, but eating it will. You can also use the solution as an ant poison. Just add sugar, and put it where there are ants. They will take it back to the nest and the entire nest will be gone.
Can you add food coloring? Painting the crystal would be nice like see through blue

I bet pinecones would look lovely done this way, too! =D Thanks for sharing!
Exactly what I was thinking as well!
😵💫Don’t panic if the pine cone closes up when it gets wet! I will reopen when it dries 😅
i thought that too, imagen if you did a big enough bath to soag the tree skirt in
That's a great idea!
@@doreenwatson-readI thought you were going to say soak the whole tree!
One way to keep the borax crystals from falling off your ornaments, especially acrylic ornaments, is to sand down the acrylic before putting it into the borax solution. By sanding or roughing up the surface of the acrylic ornament you are creating a "tooth" for the borax crystals to adhere to. The reason the crystals will stay on the flowers better is due to the fabric having a "tooth" to it. Anything that is perfectly smooooooth and highly glossed like plastics or acrylics will need to be roughed up in order to have something adhere to it.
Thanks for sharing this simple yet beautiful way to bring a little bling to the holidays!
God Bless 😃
Yeah, I was thinking she should have sanded down the icicles so that the solution would stick to the whole thing.
practical advice and thinking ahead.... thank you
Would putting hairspray on them help hold the crystals in place?
@@cindydupuis2516 I've never used it for that, but I bet it would hold the crystals or whatever you have onto the surface temporarily.
That makes total sense! So nice to share that for us! Thankyou🙂
I personally never knew this. Thank you for sharing ❣️❣️❣️
You are so welcome
@@OurUpcycledLife Well, I don't have little ones, nor the human kind my are older than 13 years nor fur or feather babies.
I definitely use for the wash and the bad Insects and others.
This would be beautiful on twigs and branches too!
Thank you so much for this video.
I'm disabled and homebound. This will give me something fun to do. Comments on the science were informative but it's you that added the magic to Christmas. 😉
Glad you enjoyed
I used this method years ago but using pipe cleaners. You can make any shape with the pipe cleaners - snowflakes, circles, trees etc and they look gorgeous. Also try dropping cotton wool balls into the solution and you get wonderful snowballs! Great reminder video and fantastic results especially with the flowers.
Some great ideas. Thanks so much for watching Vanessa.
By 'cotton wool balls', do you mean just basically cotton balls that come in a bag at the store?
@@loraleewellington9064 I can’t speak for the original comment post but yes. That’s usually another name for them.
I was just going to say that pipe cleaners can be shaped into lots of things. I love to make cool things but never heard of using Borax. Neat idea.
Do you have to watch where you put these when done so your dog or cat dont grab them? And kids? You dont want them near kids do you? I guess I am asking if they are safe.
Borax crystallizes so easily because you're making a super saturated solution, not necessarily because it's a chemical, although if you really want to get picky everything is a chemical. You can technically do pretty much the same thing with table salt, or sugar, or about hundred other things. because it's a super saturated solution the liquid wants to form crystals and all it needs is some sort of uneven surface to start as a nucleus to form that crystal
I wish the video was on regular salt or sugar then.. borax is incredibly toxic if ingested. the idea of people vaporizing it into their homes is scary
@@KashiGirl911 Borax has about the same toxicity as salt. Some people use it medicinally in tiny amounts.
@@KashiGirl911 I mean you could grow salt crystals, just trade out 6 hours, for several weeks and continued refilling of the reservoir...
@@KashiGirl911 borax=soap
@@origirox your idiot comment shows you didn't even watch the video. She's talking about boiling it so that it vaporizes into the air. Why don't you go boiling a jug of lysol and stick your head over it.. then come back and tell us what a good idea it was
Thank you for this. Many years ago I remember doing this in the third
grade!! Looking forward to doing it again at 70 years old.!! Have a
great Christmas.
So glad you enjoyed watching!
Borax is a natural form of hydrated sodium with boron and oxygen. It forms crystals in a diamond or slanted cube shape that can appear anywhere from translucent white to nearly clear. These crystal salts are found and mined in large deposits mostly in the desert areas of the western US The crystal forming process you use is the same to form "rock candy" which is a six faceted sucrose crystal. The object is to over-saturate the water with the dissolved crystal by using hot water. The solid material left in the water is because the water is completely saturated with the borax salts. As the water cools and evaporates it can no longer hold the sodium (or sucrose) in solution so the molecule looks for something solid to attach to and begin growing a crystal. You could do the same thing with table sugar or table salt although the perfect cube crystal of table salt (sodium chloride) limits it's ability to refract light so it doesn't "sparkle" the way Borax or sugar does. Snow sparkles because as it freezes, pure water forms the same hexagon shaped crystal as sugar.
Very interesting. Thank you.
Interesting….
Thank You
I think this would be a really fun craft/science experiment to do with my 11 year old granddaughter. Thank you!
@@SeaBreeze2247you can tint the crystals by adding a few drops of food coloring into the solution. 😉
Thanx!
I wish you could still buy Lux flakes! Mixed with water, it made the best “snow”! I used to put it on the edges of pine cones or Yule logs. Another bonus with those boxes of powder detergent back in the 50’s was that they often had carnival glass dishes, cups and/or plates inside. The real originals are definitely collectors’ items.
Oh that's so cool! Thanks for sharing!
Maybe try Ivory Flakes or Dreft.
@@marywiggins7411 We used to use Ivory Flakes mixed with sugar and water. Is Ivory flakes still made, I haven't seen it in years?
Lux changed the name to Softly, you can still get it online. 😉
Any salt will form a crystal if you suspend an object in a saturated solution of the salt. A great at home project for kids is to hang string into a saturated solution of a salt for several days. You can line up solutions of epsom salts, washing soda, borax and table salt and compare the shape that is unique to each crystal.
Great science observation/craft project to do with the littles!
Growing up, my mom was an artist. Each year at Christmas, she would mix borax, food coloring and maybe something else, and paint our large picture window wirh Christmas scenes. One year, it was the lion and the lamb, another year, the stable in Bethlehem, etc. You could see it from the road, so people driving by could enjoy it. The stuff cleaned off the window easily. Hated washing away those pictures.
Great memories ❤️
Beautiful, thanks for sharing!
Too bad they were made to be temporary. Now I have some new ideas of what to use it for. Still have to make sure my dogs don't lick the window.
That is amazing. Old forgotten DIY's brought to "new" life. This was the way it used to be...Thanks.
I never knew!! I have several pink poinsettias that I had picked up at a garage sale. I love their slightly faded, vintage look but i knew they needed a little“something.” This! This is exactly what they need! Thank you so much for all of your inspiring ideas! ❤️🎄
I have some 20 year old silk poinsettias that were looking kind of ragged. Can’t wait to try this with those and some other old ornaments. I’m going to do the little red plastic apples I’ve had for ages too. I was looking for a holiday craft to do with my grown granddaughter, as I used to do every year with my kids.,
Takes me back, we used pipe cleaners twisted into snowfakes in the classroom. The kids loved it!
Yes! We did too!
SURE BEATS TEACHING ANYTHING TRANS..........
Wow they’re all absolutely stunning!
THANK YOU for making ,sharing this video and teaching us how to make our ornaments stunning as well! 🤩
You are so welcome!
What a beautiful idea!
Thank you! 😊
Just beautiful! Thank you for sharing these wonderful, home made craft tips.
Glad you liked them!
The flowers were particularly lovely, what a great idea 👏🏼
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed penny.
Wow never seen that technique before! Thanks for sharing!😀
thank you so much!!! I help find vintage ornaments and clean them up and try to make them "updated" for a non profit to sell on their holiday tree. This is such a great thing! I can't wait to show the video to the other volunteers!
I’d forgotten about this method. I absolutely love the how beautiful the flowers looked. ❤
Borax crystals are gorgeous on Baby's breath.
Wow, that was amazing. I need to get some Borax. What a difference ti made. Thanks for showing this video.
You’re welcome! It’s a great way to decorate for the holidays.
Cool idea! I've used Epsom salt on bottles and ornaments before and this sounds fun, too! Thanks for sharing! 🤗
The flowers are such a show off🥰 I was recently watching for sea shells, but, now the flowers are a must try. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed.
What a great idea. I remember 20 Mule Team Borax from commercials (before your time 😊) in the 60s. Everything looks beautiful and sparkley. As always thank you for sharing this awesome idea. ❤😊
This is so neat! I didn't know Borax could be used in such a magical way. Thank You for the tutorial.🎄
Happy holidays!
This is gorgeous! Another way to add "ice crystals" to your decor is with spray adhesive and Epsom salt.
Also less toxic. Borax is toxic.
Yes, that would work great, also and beautiful. Thanks for watching.
@@JCcreates927 if ingested.
And the spray adhesive isn't? Lol
@@TeaLeaf30 most aren't as toxic as borax
They say you learn something new every day. Well, I sure did. I ever knew that Borax could do this. Pretty cool I think. ♥️😊👍🌟🎄
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed.
I sure like the cover of your borax box! Very cute & vintage, too.
I think so too!
Gorgeous !!!!
You're so welcome!
Wow! Really beautiful! Who knew? Now we ALL know! Thanks so much for sharing!
You are so welcome
I liked the effect and would appreciate another video at the end of Christmas season to see how well they hold up…I usually use glas shards or ornament shards for this effect, but they aren‘t always easy on the hands
By the way, to make your snowflakes look more realistic, you need to fold them into 6 parts, not 8, because that is the crystal shape any snowflake will be based on - there are beautiful cutouts on pinterest to take inspiration from as well, ranging from easy to intricate
Thanks for the tips. I appreciate it. I need to practice my snowflake cutting skills lol.
The are so beautiful, but they only last one season. Eventually the become a powder on them!
@@nancybarkman2099 even when sealed with the Rustoleum?
@@aliciagiampapa8157 Thank you very much. I have done this in the past and no one ever said anything about sealing the item. I thought it was just a one time ornaments. Thank you again. I really appreciate your knowledge.
Wow!! So sparkly and pretty, Ty soooo much for sharing.

. absolutely adorable
Thanks 😊
The possibilities are endless. Faux evergreens, snow men ornaments, bottle brush trees. Etc, I can’t wait to try them
So fun to try!
How Beautiful !!!!
I have heard of that Borax trick years ago but never seen it done, It really made those things you put into it look really pretty.
Amazing what you did with Borax! I think you are my favorite magician. Lol! So very talented and lovely to share your ideas with us! Many blessings!
So glad you enjoyed. Thanks so much for watching.
I have never heard of this before!! The poinsettias are my favorite!! I have some old poinsettias that I'll use for this!
The flowers are beautiful
Wow! This is so cool. I have to try this. I love the way it looks, especially on the flowers and snowflakes!
I've never seen this before and want to thank you for sharing ❤
My pleasure 😊
Wow so pretty..love them..
I really like the red flowers!!
This is a fun technique to do for some sparkle
I love how the poinsettias came out, very nice. I highly recommend sealing your work with a clear lacquer or spray poly urethane. Borax ingestion or frequent borax exposure has many possible side effects and may result in borax poisoning. The risks are especially high for children and pets, who may accidentally inhale or ingest borax. Once sealed it will be much safer to handle.
That is so awesome. Those poinsettias look amazing. Thank you for sharing ❤
Glad you like them!
Those are gorgeous, i did not expect this result! cheers
Thanks! I’m glad you like them!
Beautiful!
I'm glad you like them!
This 8s so AMAZING! I never saw that done before.! I bought the Borax, now all I have to do is boil water! THANK YOU ❤️!!! I AM NOW A NEW SUBSCRIBER! 😍😍😍
I’m impressed and love the look. I have a box of Borax hanging around from when I made slime for my grandchildren. Thank you!
What!! This is so cool! Thank you so much for uploading this
I use Borax all the time in my laundery
Those pinecones would look beautiful too with Borax!
Sure would
Thanks for the memory!❤ This was an experiment I used when I taught high school science! I’m definitely going to use this, this Christmas. Thanks for the inspiration!😊

Sounds like a fun DIY project. Thanks for watching.
Wow! Beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Maravillosa idea !! ❤
Thank you. So beautiful.
Borax is a mineral that naturally forms white-ish, sparkly, icy looking crystals. Just like sugar - if you dissolve it in water, then let the water dry on something, it'll coat it with crystals.
I dont have borax but I do have sugar. What would be the best ratio of water and sugar?
Thank you. Was looking for things I can make with what I have to save money. This is great !!
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed.
