I learned this technique 40 years ago when I was in the military. There we pasted foil on topographic maps and removed the paper background. Then we could crumple up the maps and put them in our pockets or backpacks without the paper tearing at the creases when folded several times. As a result, the maps lasted at least half a year before we could then no longer use them. Paper maps we had to change every few weeks.
❤ Yes, Thank you for your service and helpful information... This is the kind of information I want my kids to learn.. not how to turn on the house lights from miles away! LOL thank you again for sharing this with all of us...
Sorry if someone has already suggested the following : If you don't like the glossy-ness of the resulting 'transfer' use a piece of fine grade sand paper over the image once you've adhered it to your chosen substrate.
I like to use 3m wetordry sandpaper 400 or 600 grit. It's actually designed to be used wet so water won't ruin it and you can use it over and over... plus you end up with a nice matte finish.
I tried this on a whim the next morning after I watched this video. I used the image from a piece of junk mail and it actually worked! I showed how easy it was to my wife. She didn't act like she was impressed but I 'know' she'll try it because creating things to hang around the house is her thing! Thanks for posting!
@@casual454t1 I would rather suggest using the decoupage technique with printing out an image in reverse and ironing it onto your chair (Our Upcycled Life has a video about fabric transfer).

I do a similar thing with Mod Podge instead of sticky tape. You can buy large sheets of sticky clear plastic used to protect book covers, get it on a roll.
Really impressed with this trick! I did it with some coupons and it transferred the logos flawlessly. Thanks for sharing, and I'm glad the algorithms are expanding my woodworking video's to other makers.
I love this!! ❤️❤️ Had to try it right away - clear transfer tape for a vinyl cutter works as well, and will help you get a larger area if you need that. I tried that with a large portion of a page in one of those adult coloring books, and it works!! Love your content, thank you!! ❤️
That was brilliant. Some of the people here already knew it. Some have other suggestions. But many are learning about it for the first time. Brilliant.
you are amazing. Thank you for sharing your ideas and not advertising products. This is what Yahoo was originally intended not to be used by some canning people to sell products that are not even their inventions or ideas. Thank you.
These are fun. If you want the text or image on opposite side also, i.e., magazine, book page, etc. put packing tape on both sides, fold an edge down on both sides of packing tape so you can create a handle. Put in water, may take a little longer as water seeps from edges then you can gently pull each piece of packing tape put back in water a bit then rub paper off and you have both sides of text or printed magazine, etc.
I knew about this but I have an inkjet printer so I dismissed it. Never occurred to me that I could use other prints already lying around my house. Very useful! Thank you!
Little late to the party, but I use double side tape if the graphic is on the smaller size. I use packing tape as a shiny cover in my crafting, packing tape isn't just for packing! 😉 Thank You for a great reminder of thid technique!
This is so cool. I make my own greeting cards and this is definitely something I’ll be trying. This is the first time I’ve seen this site and enjoyed how you demonstrated the different types of papers. I’ve subscribed and look forward to learning some new skills. Thank you for sharing. ☺️
I have never thought of or heard about this technique and I think it's amazing, thank you! I am a bit of a tape snob, though, and I would say that cheap packing tape is always a bad idea. Heavy Duty Packing tape just performs better in handle-ability, longevity, stickiness, flatness, (Anti-curling,) everything. I quit buying dollar store tape long ago, If you buy heavy duty at the big box hardware store, or online, it is usually not that expensive.
Maybe thick archival clear book binding tape would work great too, & be less harsh on the paper, since this tape is meant for paper/ books preservation

I've seen this method on a craft show. They were selling A4 sheets of the sticky so you could do bigger projects. However the transfer sheets were a premium cost. Thank for this hack. It's great and so cheap. ❤️

excellent transfer process, i have been struggeling with display flags on plastic model ships for 2 years, attempting to apply the flags and hull numbers the correct way that the directions say, but the flags and hull numbers are so tiny theyget damaged, torn, i may damage the ship upon applications of the flags and numbers to the point it frustrated me and i stopped building models... HOWEVER , after watching this your method might be the answer, i will let you know if and when i try, thanks so much for this tip

Am a father of non verbal autistic boy. and since long I was trying to find out the way by which I can teach him stencil and photo , image transfer. SO that he can learn this art and earn his pocket money. Because I would like to give him a dignified life. Thank you once again for this amazing and very useful information.
@@OurUpcycledLife In the 70s in an audio vusuals class we made transparencies using magazine pictures in a similar manner. The teacher explained that many magazines' pages are clay based and the clay dissolves when wet leaving the ink behind. Hope I remember correctly. It's been a few years.
When you said transfers, I was thinking of the transfers that you burnish onto your background like this page. They have “furniture transfers” like that where it looks what created, but you take the transfer and apply it to the wood by rubbing the back firmly with a burnishing stick. This is cool though. Can you imagine how next level that would be? Plus , those kind of transfers are pricey.
I did this 50 years ago, I put Pictures from magazines on contact paper Remove the backing by placing it in couple inches of water in the bathtub Then it went on top of my dresser! It was pretty cool!

I might be 2 months late on finding this and the ziplock bags video I just watched, but you just made my day! I’m going to have so much fun with this in my junk journals! Oh Wow! Just Thank You So Much!!! 😊😊😊
Finally how stick the transferred pictures on to another surface. That would be little difficult because it does not have the original adhesive remaining on the tape, after soaking it in the warm water. Brilliant idea, I love it.
I actually knew about this years ago and had forgotten about it. Thanks for jogging my memory. I can't wait to see what I can do with these ideas of yours. I have one question....what exactly is a junk journal?
Glad you enjoyed! Junk journaling is putting pages together of altered art and using mix media to create little booklets or pages or diaries to journal in
It is the most creative, fun craft/art work. Check it out on you tube, there are many. Many tutorials...do your creative nature a favor and check it out....papers. Inks. Paints, stamps, cuts from magazines. Flowers, ribbons. Laces and more
The technique works guys,I tried it like she said, put the packing tape on,scrape the taped item on good, then put it in warm water for 30 to to seconds, then scratch off the back of the image, and all done😀
Impressed with the fact ur tape didn't bunch up and you didn't seem to have an issue finding the end it sticking to the roll! Interesting technique on the tape too!
I believe this may work best if one prints their design directly onto a page ripped out of a magazine instead of regular printer paper. At least, it does when transferring the toner directly to wood and metal by using a clothes iron to re-melt the toner and stick it to the wood or metal surface. The magazine paper is glossy/slippery and therefore the toner doesn't embed and adhere quite as well to it as it does to printer paper (which is designed to hold onto that toner for dear life 😸 since tax documents with numbers that fell or rubbed off are pretty useless). I think glossy photo paper is also good because it too is slippery and harder to stick the toner onto, but it's expensive. You can probably get an old magazine out of your neighborhood recycling bins within 5 minutes of looking. 😸 I've never used this trick (which is great BTW, thanks!) but I have done the "toner--->wood & metal with an iron" method both for making a wooden art display piece and for making a mask for etching a custom copper circuit board, and it works fantastically. :)
I saw a video once of a woman Ironing a photo printed on regular paper I think but she ironed into the just dry top coat. But so many videos out there dont really have enough instructions to figure out exactly what they did like Diedre does here! I wait for her to try all things!
I like the process but I didn’t see the final product. I saw the tape being payed out on the coffee stained paper but what happens at the end? Your pieces were laying loose. Would love to see the final project.
@OurUpcycledLife I think it's a great method when you don't have a Cricket machine... that black chair back you found at the dump was a good example of how this could be used IMO.
I remember learning how to do this when I was in Elementary School, I'm 63 now, LOL. And I used the technique last week to transfer dinosaur pictures for my two nephews' Junk Journals since that is what they are into right now, (they are 6 & 7).

If u print with a laser printer on sticker paper backing (after stickers/labels are removed), u can press packing tape on it and just peel the image off the slick sticker backing paper (no water or scrubbing)…. And ur tape definitely stays sticky.
Thank you so much for tutorial. Excited to do this for gifts using personalized napkins of weddings, anniversary and photos! Business logos too. There are decals for equipment, machinery, appliances that are no longer in production. With a bit of google for a photo and then print, you could easily come up with a usable reproduction decal/sticker. WOO HOO. Curious if anyone has tried this method with a full sheet of laminate (paper). I think it would give you a larger option. While sticky like packing tape, the laminate page may not have the chemistry required to capture and hold the transfer.
This is brilliant. In the UK we have sticky back plastic. I'm sure you have it in the US, but possibly a different name. I reckon that you could do much larger ones with this.
so cool that it works with the colored backgrounds of the napkins and scrapbook paper. was worried it would rub off like easily like the magazine paper. can’t wait to experiment! thank you for posting!
Ive seen people do it with a a larger piece of tape like labeling spice jars but the video I saw wasnt too informative. Just music. So I dont know if they reglued the packing tape.

I recently did a collage using packing tape transfers. My magazine pictures were printed using an ink-jet (?) printer. They were in black and white so I painted the surface before putting the transfers on. Also, I trimmed the transfers. Do you do that? I liked you used the package tape on different types of paper to make transfers.
Absolutely amazing! And so beautiful. Thank you for sharing! And I love The Graphics Fairy too. I subscribed and look forward to learning more from you!

Wow 🤩 that is amazing 🤩 I just tried it out on both the colour laser printer and the black and white one. Turned out brilliantly on both! Thank you for posting this 🙏🙏🙏🙏😃😃😃😃
Awesome tutorial! What do you suggest for knocking down the gloss from the transfer tape? I don't want that shiny look for a antique project. Thank you
I wonder if you dont want it glossy if you put matte Mop Podge or a matte poly acrylic sealer over top of the tape whether it will take the shiny away? I think it will... Give it a try and let me know :)
You can do something similar with pictures - take a good picture (B&W works really well), and make a photo copy onto regular copy paper. Take Modge Podge or white glue and glue the picture FACE DOWN onto a rustic board. Make sure you press it down really well so there's no bubbles. Once it dries, get a wet sponge and slowly, one part at a time, dampen the picture and rub away the paper. The image is left on the wood, but also you can see the wood come through.

I've seen this technique and love it, but the few tutorials that I tried to figure it out from went way overboard, making it more complex than it needed to be. I feel like I can more easily do this now, and add some new dimension to my items for sale and that I give as gifts! You're such a gem!
This is neat. I tried it with calendar pictures, and it worked fine. I had to soak it for longer than 30 seconds though. It didn't work with our printer though. While the printer ink did not run, it also did not transfer to the tape. Maybe just the type of printer we have (eco tank).
I saw this in a video once but your technique with credit card is impressive I want to make tags for my craftroom totes and ect. THANK YOU ! SO APPRECIATE IT! ❤❤❤❤
That was really cool. I'm a retired graphic designer with no more fancy graphic computer. It died. But that's okay, I focus on hands-on projects now and have to relearn old school tricks. Sometimes I attempt to make my own stencils. I set my type in Adobe Illustrator (still have that on old laptop), print off my laser, and try to use that. I'll have to try this and see how I feel about the "tape" texture.

Glad you enjoyed. Thanks so much for watching.
That I am going to try. Thank you
I do a similar thing with Mod Podge instead of sticky tape. You can buy large sheets of sticky clear plastic used to protect book covers, get it on a roll.
Do you know what the product you are speaking about is called?

Ohhhh!!! Great tip! ❤️ I am going to do that for book pages

Little late to the party, but I use double side tape if the graphic is on the smaller size.
I use packing tape as a shiny cover in my crafting, packing tape isn't just for packing! 😉
Thank You for a great reminder of thid technique!

Great tips ! Thanks 😊
Maybe thick archival clear book binding tape would work great too, & be less harsh on the paper, since this tape is meant for paper/ books preservation

I really like this amazing technique of graphics and photo transfer. You really explained it very interestingly. Am a father of non verbal autistic boy. and since long I was trying to find out the way by which I can teach him stencil and photo , image transfer. SO that he can learn this art and earn his pocket money. Because I would like to give him a dignified life. Thank you once again for this amazing and very useful information.
Thank you so much for watching and I hope it was helpful and you can have fun doing this project together with your son take care
That is amazing! I am now really curious how the chemistry behind it actually works.
Me too! I actually have no idea but it certainly is cool :)

Yes those transfers are very pricey! Thanks for watching Verena

The technique works guys,I tried it like she said, put the packing tape on,scrape the taped item on good, then put it in warm water for 30 to to seconds, then scratch off the back of the image, and all done😀
Certainly does!! So fun! Thanks for watching Helen
Thanks Helen
Impressed with the fact ur tape didn't bunch up and you didn't seem to have an issue finding the end it sticking to the roll! Interesting technique on the tape too!

My new favorite craft! I tried it with thin, semi glossy magazine paper and it peeled right off after soaking...didn't even have to rub it off!
Wonderful!
I have never done the iron on magazine trick! I'm going to give it a go! Thanks for the inspiration
I saw a video once of a woman Ironing a photo printed on regular paper I think but she ironed into the just dry top coat. But so many videos out there dont really have enough instructions to figure out exactly what they did like Diedre does here! I wait for her to try all things!
Good to know! I better subscribe!

I like the process but I didn’t see the final product. I saw the tape being payed out on the coffee stained paper but what happens at the end? Your pieces were laying loose. Would love to see the final project.
You can incorporate into many projects! I will put something together and do a video :)
I'm going to used mat or gloss gel from an art supplies store to attach them. Pricey stuff so wait for a sale!
What a fun diy to do with kids

WOW! This is amazing. I'll try this for my paper dollhouse project. Thank you!
If u print with a laser printer on sticker paper backing (after stickers/labels are removed), u can press packing tape on it and just peel the image off the slick sticker backing paper (no water or scrubbing)…. And ur tape definitely stays sticky.
Great tips! Thanks
Great ideas! I would think the laminate sheet would work!! I will need to look for some and give it a go

so cool that it works with the colored backgrounds of the napkins and scrapbook paper. was worried it would rub off like easily like the magazine paper. can’t wait to experiment! thank you for posting!

Would you leave a little more of the tape border if you wanted it to adhere to ceramic or glass? A photo on a glass candle holder would be beautiful!
It works best on a chalk painted surface. It doesn't work well on plain glass

Haven't tried that! Will give it a go
Update using a laser jet printer is better for copies because colors won't bleed.

I was wondering the same thing. Can the letters etc be transferred off of the tape onto a new surface somehow?

As an artist, I had to see if this technique worked, and worked like a charm😊😆👍👌

This is neat. I tried it with calendar pictures, and it worked fine. I had to soak it for longer than 30 seconds though. It didn't work with our printer though. While the printer ink did not run, it also did not transfer to the tape. Maybe just the type of printer we have (eco tank).
Yes if thicker paper it will need to soak longer
