I learned this song 22 years ago and would sing it to my daughter. She is special needs and to this day when she’s sick or in the hospital she always ask me to sing her this song❤️
Her voice, like her appearance, personality and talent, are absolutely breath-taking. I truly wish she'd put out an album, I'd snatch it up in a second!
This has been one of my favorite songs since I bought 'For Our Children' for MY children. There are some lovely versions of this song, but I love this one best, I think, for it's simplicity and warmth. There is such a genuine feeling about it; listening to it is like being rocked by a loving mother. It has taken up permanent residence in my heart.
When my children were babies my husband ordered this on cassette along with other heart filled songs for kids it takes me back to that time almost thirty years now I’m a nanny it sure makes me weep every time thank you Meryl Streep for such a beautiful song. For The Children’s Foundation.
i wish you were my mother. I listen to this song cause I was never loved as a child. i wish you would have become middle class in your 30s and had adopted me. You probably would have given me a good life. you are a great actor, and you have a beautiful voice!!! I even wish your husband was my father. I never met mine.
I had a mother and father, David, but they were not happily married, at least from the time I was a small child. I used to visit other children's families and think why isn't that mine. But that doesn't mean you have to follow the path of those who brought you in this world. Just be loving yourself and a true friend. Continue to think about and follow the example of those you believe are models of kindness and charity. I hope you are blessed with an abundance of love.
@@dawncollins668 i remember it would hurt like shit being at others homes cause it was everything you ever wished for and then you’d come home and it was the total opposite
Wow she has an amazingly beautiful voice! ♡ Meryl, you are my favourite actress(/actor) and I love your personality and joie de vivre ♡ I wish you are a person of my family. :)
This song makes me feel so strange. Always has. My dad bought me the cassette tape of For Our Children when I was about 7, I guess, and... This one was my favorite. It always seemed so haunting and mysterious. When I was in 2nd grade, my friend and I coreographed our own ballet to it for a talent show; I still remember that. But now, 23 years later, all of that seems like another life. I lost my old home, and both my parents are gone now; I've not seen the girl I did the talent show with since childhood. This song has a painful quality to it now. Even as a child, it held a kind of nostalgia for me, because I wouldn't always be little. Still, it's one more thing that reminds me that I'm still the same person I was then.
I’ve been looking all over for this song! When I was little I had this album For Our Children and would listen to it all the time. My mom would play this song for me on the radio/cd player I had in my room when I had trouble going to sleep.
When I was a little boy my mum would sing this to my twin brother and I. It still brings back happy memories listening as mum sang to us.... Now I have grandchildren. Memories are more precious than all the gold in the world.
Chose to play this while burying my miscarried baby … wrapped in velvet inside a heart-shaped box, then planted beneath a crepe myrtle tree. Still cry every time I hear Meryl’s exquisite voice sing this poignant song.
I’m so terribly sorry for your loss. You know, He loved your sweet one so very much that He brought that dear soul back into His Heaven to be with the angels. Sometimes a whispered dream is all that we’re allowed. He alone has His reasons. That child was very special, indeed, for whatever poor and clumsy words that I might have to offer you. What you wrote is so sweet. God bless you; He has His eye on you. Lean on Him. Love in Christ Jesus, M.
sound like we all need therapy session after listening to this. we love our parents and long for their love, but they're the ones that miss us up the most. that's why I am scared to become a mother.
I think it's from an album called Disney's "For Our Children." Lots of celebs singing children's songs. Might be from the second album. There were two.
Por Dios, Que Voz!!!! I Love You Meryl!!! Oh My God!!!! What Voice!!!! i use this song to Relaxme and Study.... Argentina Meryl you're simply the BEST!!! Keeses!!!
Ms Streep has such a beautiful voice for this lovely song and poem from Ireland, written by Herbert Hughes (who collected the original tune) and Soesamh Mac Cathmhaoil (lyrics) from ‘Songs of Uladh’ (1904). One of Meryl Streep’s daughters, Grace Gummer, has the role of Arabella Sours in the film ‘The Homesman’ as a very young married woman living with her equally young husband in the newly expanding territories of middle America. One of three women who’ve lost control of their minds, she was to be taken back east to her family after having lost her mind due to the loneliness and overbearing hardships of homesteading. The added burden of trying to deal with the deaths of their young children pushes her over the edge, and her mental breakdown culminates when she throws her naked, crying newborn into a hole in the outhouse. Gummer capably translates these events to screen in a gripping, moving, (and shocking) way. Grace Gummer is as hauntingly elegant on screen as her talented mother Meryl, who also has a cameo role in the film which boasts an exceptional all-star lineup. Adapted for the screen from Glendon Swarthout’s novel, Tommy Lee Jones not only wrote the screenplay but directed and starred in his film company’s production. In the 1989 miniseries ‘Lonesome Dove,’ immigrant Irishman Allen O’Brien tries to sing this song, ‘Gartan Mother’s Lullaby’ over the newly dug grave of his younger brother Sean, who’d died from too many snakebites as he was crossing the river at the beginning of the cattle drive. “I wish I could’ve finished it,” Allen tearfully said to Newt, “ ‘twas his favorite.”
....and now go see " Florence Foster Jenkins" ....again and again. You've got to be really good ,I mean REALLY GOOD to sing that badly. She's got my vote for the Oscar.
@@rollinontherim Florence Jenkins was a singer who was notorious for being absolutely awful. She sold out Carnegie Hall because people came to experience the train wreck that was her singing. She was immensely popular simply because she was so, so, so bad. Check this out for a sample of the real Florence: ruclips.net/video/qtf2Q4yyuJ0/видео.html and she never realised quite how bad she was. In order to sing deliberately badly, you have to be really, really good. John was making that point, I believe.
No, it's from an album released in the early 90s called For Our Children. A bunch of celebrities got together and recorded children's songs, and proceeds from the album's sales went toward the Pediatric AIDS Foundation. I had the cassette as a kid, and at age 24, I still have it, even though I can't play it on anything anymore. You can still buy the CD on Amazon, though the songs are all over the internet now.
