It also helps that a good amount of the special effects still hold up considerably well considering the age of the movie. My daughter is 3, and she has already seen it a handful of times, whether she knew what it was or not.
I don't think this movie is forgotten, it's just underrated. I believe most people who've seen it in the past and loved it still remember it fondly. Every time I somehow remember this movie (I'm rewatching the X files's Monster of the Week episodes now!) I get a little smile and think that maybe I should watch it again. Also, just to mention that Ted Levine is an incredibly talented actor and completely underrated. Thanks for reviewing this movie!
I always thought this movie had that fun carefree feeling the late 90s and Early 2000’s movies captured seemed to capture really well. X files was one of my favourite shows so David Docovney in a comedy movie about aliens I’m sold LOL it’s just a fun good time and I love it. Thanks for the content Chris!
Evolution came along early in my time at Tippett Studio, and actually kinda "saved" the studio during rough times. (This would happen a lot in ensuing years, with different projects.) The "Amoeba" anus practical was on our stage for a while, and crew got to pose on a ladder underneath it making hilarious faces. (I have a photo somewhere, I think.) And "Cutey Pie" was in the lobby near my desk for years, along with other creature maquettes, some in the film and others not. Lots of memories, thanks for bringing them up, Chris.
I love the absurdity of this movie! One of the first DVDs I ever bought and I still have it! For me it is the goofy nature of the movie that I love, it never takes itself seriously and just allows you some mindless fun

I laughed out loud when they referred Selenium as the active ingredients of the Head and Shoulders Dandruff shampoo. It was clever and unexpected, but not winking to the camera like in Wayne's World. if anything it's closer to Pizza Hut's relationship with TMNT. I still remember Selenium in the periodic table just because of this scene.
I've watched this movie so many times growing up that I completely get what you mean by the movie becoming a song to you. This movie is like comfort food to me, every line of dialogue, every sound effect or music used is engraved in my brain probably forever. Not only that, but the amazing creature designs in this movie is also one of the main reasons I started drawing so much as a young teen, because it inspired me to invent my own weird alien monsters and imagine how they would evolve. This movie is so important to me, thank you so much for reviewing it the way you did and making it feel super special all over again. ♡(ŐωŐ人)
I saw this movie at my aunt and uncles house when I was 7 or 8 and was disturbed and totally immersed in it. Probably the first sci-fi film I ever saw in hindsight. The only scene I could ever remember years later was the alien under the skin and how horrified I was at the idea. I never knew the name of the film until this review! Years ago the memory resurfaced and I tried to find what it was on google and IMDB. The only thing that ever came up was the Alien franchise movies when I would search that scene. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks, huge fan of your channel. I’m not a big commenter typically, but when I saw that scene again it brought me back to that moment. It sort of completed that memory and it was awesome to finally know what it is. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for reviewing this movie. One of my favorites as a kid and growing up around the filming locations. Page, Arizona is where it was filmed. All locals have it in their DVD collections.
I’ve watched this movie as a kid, I remember being scared and laughing at the same time 😂… And I also remember screaming Head & Shoulders when he mentioned Selenium, because it was in the description of the tv commercial dubbed in Portuguese, which as a child I memorized and would repeat every time it was on, my family was always annoyed by that 😂😂😂… Wow! This movie really brings me back in time 😂😂😂 So cool!!!
This year you have been reviewing all my most memorable movies from my infancy/adolescence! All of this movies were for green in open TV. I think the only one missing and I believe you already review is the faculty! Oh lord, I miss the 90’s movies

Chris, we're the same age and I have such fond memories of Evolution. I haven't watched it since my teen years, but it's a movie that I've always remembered so much of. I'm definitely going to re-watch it again this weekend. I don't know what it is about this movie that made it stick with me all these years. Perhaps it's the timing of it, me being 13 at the time, it just hit the right spot. Thanks for bringing it back to my conscience attention.
I am so glad to see I’m not the only one who feels this way! This was easily my sisters and my favorite movie growing up. We demanded the dvd for Christmas and every time we went on long distance trips in the car, that was in the dvd player for sure!
I never got into X-Files, so when I saw the ads for this movie back in the day I thought it looked dumb. I ended up watching it with a friend and loved it. Great to see it getting some love. Not every movie needs to be great to be remembered, sometimes it just needs to be fun.
I have seen this dozens of times and researched it about 6 months ago when my baby was ill and not sleeping. I still quote it on a weekly basis and most people I come across sadly have never even heard of it. So glad you get it 🙂
Loved this flick. When I moved to San Jose from San Diego, and I was all alone, and my dad died half a week before my new job started, and I was (did I mention) all alone in a new town in a new apartment, and across the parking lot from me a movie theater playing “Evolution”. I laughed. Laughed! My beloved father gone; lonely and scared as hell, and I was laughing. So yeah. It meant a lot to me too.
I love this movie. Orlando Jones is a riot in that rectal probe scene. David Duchovny is always on point with his dry sarcasm. And Julianne Moore… you gotta hand it to her, she was so game. Evolution was never the type of film you were meant to take super seriously and analyze hidden deep meanings in. It was a fun, funny, and I have to say gorgeously shot (seriously Reitman and his DP worked those Arizona locations hard) little movie that was meant to just entertain and put a smile on your face. It does for me. The effects by ILM are also quite good mixed with the incredible Stan Winston creature effects. It all still holds up.
I love this movie! It's one of my favorite sci-fi/comedies. I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad. David Duchovny has fantastic comedic chops.
I LOVE this movie!! It came out during a particularly difficult time in my life, and I can still clearly recall going to the theater to see it with my younger Brother and we laughed from beginning to end! After that, we bought the movie on DVD, and we watch it ever year during the week of his birthday (July). The cast for this movie is phenomenal! Honestly, it just... works. Those Actors together with the writing from this script made for a hilarious, fun, sometimes creepy, movie! If you have not seen Evolution, then do yourself a favor and go watch it right now! I promise you will not be disappointed!!!! Thanks for Reviewing this one, Chris!
I was watching this video with my partner today and she suggested we watch the movie with our son tonight at dinner. Thanks for the great suggestion, Chris!
You're right, I did not expect this review. But I still love it nonetheless. I didn't realized we are the same age. 2001 was when I was 13 and I loved this movie. I wasn't into the X-Files back then. Hell, I didn't really watch an episode of it until last year. But Evolution came into my head when I did reach season 7 and I always just thought it David's lack of involvement was due to Evolution specifically rather than contract disputes. Anyway, it's nice to see someone give this movie some love and I thank you for your review
I realized this movie has lived as a fever dream from my childhood. I vividly remember the head and shoulders stuff but nothing else 🤣🤣 thank you Chris for unlocking this forgotten memory.
As a kid, no joke this was my introduction to David Duchovny. I never watched X-Files when it was ON... that was something I only looked into as an adult but I LOVED this movie. I think it's a very creative and fun concept, it's funny, but much like GHOSTBUSTERS, they play it almost in such a way that you believe it. The characters make you believe in what's going on in the same way Dan Aykroyd can spew all this science jargon and you just nod like "ah... that checks out!"
The “not Ghostbusters” is exactly how I feel about it. I felt like I was seeing the same chemistry throughout the cast as I did in Ghostbusters without it being Ghostbusters. This movie was a pleasant surprise. I still feel it is very underrated and there hasn’t been a funnier movie made since (yes even Stepbrothers and Superbad). I found it in a bargain bin or used section of an electronics store for less than $5 and so happy to own it on DVD
I love this movie and I don't think many people know about it or remember it that well. Thanks for shining a light on it. This and Eight Legged Freaks were a double feature for me for a while
this is one of the best movies of its time it doesn't take itself seriously as well. It was one of those lighthearted movies that didn't feel the need to keep making fun of itself. I watched this as a teenager a hundred times, babysitting my younger brother and sister. We all had good fun watching this together. Especially that singing scene? Hilarious. 20 years later, it is still funny. Glad to have FUN movies.
I ADORED this movie as a kid, was 5 when it came out so I was probably 7 when I used to watch it over and over and over on the TV, now that I know it was PG-13 it makes so much sense why I felt fascinated by this and made me feel adventurous and like I was watching something no one else was. Fun fact, I didn’t watch X-Files until I was in high school, so to me David Duchovny had only been the guy who killed aliens in Evolution.
I completely forgot this movie exists! Coming from a diehard X Files fan, I’m stunned this dropped out of my memory. The most underrated Duchovny movie is Return to Me. That was the most likable set of characters in a movie ever.
So glad to find out other people liked this movie, especially the part about selenium in Head & Shoulders.... As a kid, I literally tried to fact check this by reading the ingredients list (sorry to report the active ingredient is a zinc compound and not selenium!). Also a couple of years ago, I gave a talk in a virtual science conference where the session organizer randomly asked my favorite chemistry related movie. I think I got recorded giving a plot summary of this movie to a bunch of academic researchers 😧. Totally forgot about the characters being professors, which is even better.
@@santos8468 Oh yes, you're correct! Just Googled it. Thanks for restoring my faith in the scientific accuracy of this movie, it was slightly nagging me for decades that I couldn't find selenium on any of the bottles of Head & Shoulders that I happened to have 😅
Evolution, Fifth Element, and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon are my favorite leisurely movies! Fun fact: Evolution is running on Pluto TV right now!
I was about 14 years old when my dad picked this movie for the family to watch back in the mid 2000s because he recognized Dave Duchovny from the X-Files and it turned into one of my favorite comedy films of that era. I watched a lot of movies that way in my early teens, it was a bit of a weekend ritual at home to watch cheap Walmart bargain bin movies or whatever else caught my dad's eye at the Hollywood Video rental store.

"There is ALWAYS time for Lubrication!" is one of the best lines of all movies ever!
🤣😂
"It's a big bird lugie" - one of my favorite lines from that movie
I loved this movie. Sean William Scott was so funny and David Duchovny has such a good dry sense of humor.
My dad and I have loved this movie for years and we quote it to each other all the time. “I took some chemistry in high school…”
Evolution, Independence Day, and Twister were my families FIRST DVDs. I've always loved this movie.
This is one of my all time fav chill movie..
Sean and Orlando are effortlessly funny. And the Heads & Shoulders placement was epic.
I LOVE that you talk about movies like this one. I was young but totally enjoyed this one. Now it’s a hidden gem that’s just fun.
This and Eight Legged Freaks were a double feature for me for a while
this is one of the best movies of its time
it doesn't take itself seriously as well.
Thank you Chris! Just fucking thank you for talking about this film. Nobody in my life has appreciated this as me.
The hospital scene is HILARIOUS . i believe we on this together Chris ! hahahah Thanks for giving a flash of the past !
I didn't know I have seen this movie as a kid until Chris mentioned the climax with Head & shoulder shampoo. Damn! I loved it at that time.
the ultimate nostalgia punch for me. I remember watching this with my dad as a kid....
man what a throwback
I completely forgot this movie exists! Coming from a diehard X Files fan, I’m stunned this dropped out of my memory. The most underrated Duchovny movie is Return to Me. That was the most likable set of characters in a movie ever.
Evolution was a fantastic movie when it came out. My buddies and I still love to quote "TAKE THE LEG" in specific scenarios.
Your point regarding the music is so true! This movie made me discover both Powerman 5000 and Wild cherry and I will love it forever for this!
"There's ALWAYS time for lubricant!"
If my memory serves me correctly, selenium is the active ingredient in a particular type of Head & Shoulders shampoo.
@@santos8468 Oh yes, you're correct! Just Googled it. Thanks for restoring my faith in the scientific accuracy of this movie, it was slightly nagging me for decades that I couldn't find selenium on any of the bottles of Head & Shoulders that I happened to have 😅
@@chips161 I'm glad I could help.
Evolution, Fifth Element, and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon are my favorite leisurely movies! Fun fact: Evolution is running on Pluto TV right now!
CHILDHOOD MEMORY UNLOCKED. I was 7 when this came out and remember being blown away by the VFX, I don’t remember much else other than that though haha
This makes me so happy Chris, I’ve always felt the same way about this movie and it seemed like no one understood. Thanks for sharing!
