Fun fact: The director originally auditioned to direct I Know What You Did Last Summer but they had already chosen a director by the time they received his reel/audition tape. The producers liked it/him so much though that they kept him in mind and gave him this project to direct.
I remember being a teenager and renting this in blockbuster, on the condition from my parents that they watch it with me… That was one of the most awkward viewing experiences of my life. I remember getting to the part with the dog in the microwave and afterwords my mom‘s turning me and saying “so you like this kind of movie?”, and I really had to play up not liking this part, because I did like slashers, but I didn’t want my mom to think I liked watching dogs getting microwaved alive (which I don’t), I never would’ve been able to live that down lol
Yeah, I watched this movie for the first time just the other day, and that’s the worst part of the movie imo, it crushed me to see that, I was “NOOOOO” when I saw that part, it was so bad, I hate seeing stuff like that done to animals in horror movies!😢😭 I wish Hollywood would leave animals out of the horror of the horror movies, and come out unscathed!
@@Joemama55122 One of “the” movies of all time? That doesn’t make sense. One of the what movies of all time? You better not say best. Because Morbius was terrible.
Urban Legend is such a fun movie, and one thing that I think a lot of people overlook is how beautiful the setting is. The weather, color scheme, and campus architecture really helps set the tone and atmosphere for this movie.
This movie came out while I was in college and I was taking a class where we actually discussed urban legends. A few of us went to see the film more than once and what we found is that a lot of the background dialogue and the callers on the radio show's issues are also urban legends. I think we counted about 20 urban legends in the fim between the kills and the dialogue. Yeah, this is definitely the definition of a guilty pleasure film for me but I like it.
Such a lovely memory with this film. It was a rainy day in west Auckland where I grew up and my best friend and I had been playing on the farm all day when her dad called us in in the mid afternoon just as it started getting really stormy. Her parents had rented The Faculty and Urban Legend from the local video store and we all sat there watching them with popcorn and hot chocolate as the thunder rolled in. The 90s were the best. I love this movie, especially the score.
Shame Alicia Witt never really became a bigger star. She's a truly fascinating person, if you know her history. Even seemed to have superpowers as a child! She was drawing precise aerial views of places she had never been to at the age of 1. At 5 years old she was reciting Shakespeare and played classical piano. When she still a child she was typing 140 words per minute, and appeared on the show That's Incredible.
I honestly loved the bit at the end where you mentioned pulling inspiration from less than stellar movies for your own work. As a film maker myself I actually more often than not will turn to less than stellar movies for inspiration because a lot of times they’ll have cool or interesting ideas that just aren’t executed as well and like you said, brain storming how I would do things better usually gets me a better idea than if I watched a truly outstanding film because for the latter I usually end up mimicking what was done where as with the former the idea is truly my own
This is hands down one of my favourite Scream inspired slashers of the 90's. The opening scene is genuinely chilling. It has a creative range of set pieces, and Sasha's chase scene is up there with Helen Shiver's as one of the best horror chase scenes ever. It's definitely flawed, but when it delivers, it more than delivers. Love it.
@@tylerleary113 Right. I also heard she didn't take it because she already had 2 roles in slasher films where her character died and she didn't want to do another one.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was 11 (went with my mom LOLLL) and it scared the poop out of me. Before leaving the theater parking lot, I made her check the backseat, under the car, the trunk, then when we got home the closet, the backyard, etc. It was the awakening of my love for horror movies, so this movie will always have a soft spot in my heart. Thanks, Mom.

I remember watching this movie just because I was a big 30 Seconds to Mars fan and I didn't expect much of it since it's not as well known as IKWYDLS and I don't really like that that much, but that opening scene got me totally enthralled. Such a fun movie! Speaking of horror legends in this movie, I LOVE that we got not only Brad Dourif and Robert Englund, but also Danielle Harris, who played Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4 and 5 and Sheriff Brackett's daughter in the Rob Zombie's Halloween remake (and the Sheriff was Dourif!).
This movie was shot in Toronto and my boyfriend at the time and his twin were the body doubles for the killer which cracked me up at the time because they were 6'2" and 180 lbs while Rebecca Gayheart is 5'6" and maybe 120 pounds.
On the topic of critics accusing this of being a Scream ripoff - yeah it’s dumb, but I’ll at least give them that this and Scream and “I Know What You Did” all fall very squarely inside the “whodunnit” sub-sub-genre of slasher movies, which was NOT the trend prior to that. Pre-Scream everyone was chasing the next horror icon, and movies with a mystery killer were antithetical to that goal, until Scream laid out how to give a mystery killer a memorable personality.

Sony seemed to be on a roll in the latter half of the 90s. With the exception of the 1998 iteration of Godzilla, most of their films were enjoyable. Urban Legend was definitely an underappreciated horror film from that time. And yes, I definitely had a crush on Tara Reid at that time. I'm trying to remember a movie that Chris reviewed. It was a kind of minimalist low-budget film, where a small cast is just in a cabin or house the entire movie?
That trailer in the beginning would put me off for sure, but I enjoyed the review so much that I just need to watch it and this point. The strangest things is, I haven’t heard about that movie at all. Never. And I loved watching every slasher back in the days.
Hey, Chris! You didn’t mention that ‘Natalie’s roommate is played by Danielle Harris aka Jamie Lloyd from ‘Halloween’ 4 & 5 plus playing ‘Annie Brackett’ in Rob Zombie’s 2 ‘Halloween’ remakes. In other words, you missed a huge detail, lol.
Even though I never watched Urban Legend, what you said at the end about watching movies to find ways to improve those movies is very true to me. A few years ago, I watched an animated movie called Rock Dog. It was pretty much overhated thanks to its similarities with Zootopia, but I thought it was an ok animated movie at best. I since thought about how I could improve the movie, which resulted in a 4-book Rock Dog fanfic series that improves on the issues I had with Rock Dog called Mengcheng Dreaming, and I definitely had fun incorporating the good elements of Rock Dog with my love for Eurovision music and my childhood growing up in Singapore. I even created a soundtrack for the series and my book chapters are named after song titles (like the Netflix anime "Carole and Tuesday"). Rock Dog may have issues, but sometimes, it's great to look at other movies and either get inspired, or figure out how we could do certain elements of the movie differently...
I had such a crush on Alicia Witt after this film. Unrelated, all her running in the rain was ridiculous. I remember thinking this wasn't too bad back when I saw it. The cast was damn solid. Dourif set the tone for this movie.
I saw this one in the movie theater and have always had a soft spot for it. Took me years to realize that the roommate was played by Danielle Harris aka Jamie Lloyd.
love this. there is something about these 90s slashers/horrors that is so iconic, im not cineliterate enough to know if its the cinematography/aspect ratio/colouring etc but they just look so distinctive! Makes me hugely nostalgic. 🥰
I have hear the envelop urban legend. The was also one about a woman who had a beehive hair due for years and that there were roaches that burrowed into her brain. My mother, even with me being in my late 30s, still tells me to check my backseat before getting in the car.
I’m sure it is because we are the same age but all of these movies ie urban legend, scream 2, I still know what you did last summer; Wes all movies I grew up watching and loving as well! Even the ones that aren’t fantastic still have a special place in my heart!
"I watched Morbius", hahahaha, that's all the review I needed. I remember how I made a group of church goers of all ages watch this in a church activity... every time I remember the doggy style scene, it cracks me up with laughter. I remember Urban Legend quite fondly. I loved it back in the day. I revisited it recently and it has not aged well, but I still enjoyed it.
I KNEW IT! I knew this was the other one you referred to in your last video. We have a lot of the same nostalgic horror tastes. It’s these movies that come out after scream when you’re the right age that even though as an adult you know it’s not good or great but it came out at the right time for you as a kid that you can’t help but love it like a warm blanket. The faculty is another one of those for me however I actually think the faculty still holds up but I am biased for the above reasons lol.

Yes! I watched this pretty young and TV and VHS. May have even gotten it at the library eventually. It's a classic in my book!
Goes to show you, every film has it's merit, even the ones that aren't as great. You never know who they will inspire :)
I went to the movies to watch this one when it was released because I had (have) a huge crush on Pacey (J. Jackson)... 😊
Best line in the movie was when Jared Leto says, "It's Urban Legending time"
Always enjoyed this one, been waiting for anyone to review it!
Would love your review of The Ruins or The Descent for your Halloween specials. Love what you do!
Are you going to review Wes Craven's Deadly Blessing anyday???
5:14 -> Patrick it's you! You're the American Psycho!
I have hear the envelop urban legend. The was also one about a woman who had a beehive hair due for years and that there were roaches that burrowed into her brain. My mother, even with me being in my late 30s, still tells me to check my backseat before getting in the car.
Hi Chris, what are your thoughts on Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime?
I’m sure it is because we are the same age but all of these movies ie urban legend, scream 2, I still know what you did last summer; Wes all movies I grew up watching and loving as well! Even the ones that aren’t fantastic still have a special place in my heart!

You and I have a lot of the same opinions on most movies, Chris. We are ONE
Bloody Mary was a big one in my area growing up, kids used to say she was buried beneath the baseball diamond at the elementary school for some reason
Chris: I hope you review DOG SOLDIERS as part of your Halloween season reviews. It is a great werewolf movie.
I just saw Karada Sagashi (2022) last night and they used the name-written-on-a-library-card thing, so I guess it still works in Japan!
Chris are putting a review of the new Halloween film ?
I can find enjoyment in any production that features Rebecca Gayheart!
😍😍😍😍
Hope you review The Orphan, Ju-On (Japan) and Monster House

I grew up on this movie too and it was one of my first watches of horror. And I loved it. Still a fun film. Glad to see it talked about
Will you review Hellraiser (2022)??
