Super joyed to see Shelby and Miles get down to test our common man vehicles too!

For all those who think this test with the two robots makes no sense, please read the note from Ford before commenting: "...But so realistic are the simulated conditions that even the most experienced human test drivers may become tired or unwell, for example when undertaking altitude testing.
Now, Ford has recruited two robot test drivers, nicknamed by the team as Shelby and Miles, to help take the strain, especially on altitude tests where a key requirement can be that the test is replicated perfectly multiple times..."

You realize they could have just hooked a bluetooth dongle to the canbus and sent can messages to control the gas, brake, and drive/reverse, right? Canbus messages could actually do way more and control every button and even the infotainment. This robot is very limited, it just does gas, brake, and shifting. This robot is 1970s technology before you could control a car electronically with canbus messages.

@@_PatrickO They are testing the whole mechanical system. Using can bus could miss a brake pedal pivot that gets stiff at low temperature or accelerator potentiometer that gets twitchy on the thousandth test when hot. Only testing a complex system as-built will shake out the unexpected bugs... and even then some bugs still get through.

@@Miata822 That is the point, they are not testing pedals or shifters, they are testing car electronics. The little digital switches in a shifter will work just fine in space, Same with the potentiometer in the pedal sensor. That stuff can be tested outside of a car without issue. They are integration testing the car electronics and drive system to make sure the car will function in extremes. Stop acting like a slob.

@@_PatrickO Of course you validate individual components before you even design them into the product. Testing the final product to failure is still critical.
Perhaps I explained poorly. Full cars are tested to identify unexpected failure modes. All OEMs do it and anyone who makes a manufactured product really should as well. It is way cheaper to catch a problem before customers have the product in their hands. Speaking from Been there, Done that.

@@Miata822 This is pathetic. This robot is 1970s tech. You need to grow up. You have no idea what they are testing and it isn't a stupid shifter knob or a gas pedal sensor. They are going after electronics validation, ie dense circuit boards and especially non climate controlled electronics. The shifter knob and pedal sensors aren't things that this kind of testing cares about, those are super simple parts that aren't going to fail if pressure drops, a circuit board can.

I have no idea what useful information can come from this sort of testing.

Function and durability testing is important. Testing at low and high temperatures for extended periods can look for thermal control deficiencies or accelerated battery degradation. The altitude tests check cooling system performance in the thinner air of high mountain passes. Ford actually missed a trick with simulated mountain testing and some cars have experienced overheating during long periods of high regen while descending steep grades. Fortunately (hopefully?) a software patch should be able to rectify that issue.
OEM thermal testing also involves precipitation and freezing to insure windshields can be cleaned and defogged, cabins heated, and doors opened once covered in ice. they test how quickly the cabin will heat on a freezing morning and how quickly it will cool on a how sun drenched afternoon.
It's not just the Mach E, all American made cars (and European too I presume) go through this kind of testing. I have tested equipment in a large environmental lab and it was a fascinating experience, and fantastically expensive.

Meanwhile Tesla, a REAL American automaker, is not importing Model Ys in from Mexico.
