What's Happening!! is an American sitcom television series that first aired on ABC from August 5, 1976, premiering as a summer series. It returned as a weekly series from November 1976 until its April 1979 conclusion. What's Happening!! was loosely based on the Eric Monte-penned film Cooley High. From 1985 until 1988, a sequel series titled What's Happening Now!! aired in first-run syndication, with most of the major cast members reprising their roles.
This show brings back so many memories.
Hell yeah! What's Happening Rules!
They have all the seasons of both What's Happening and What's Happening Now on Tubi.
Even though I was born in the early 80's I grew up watching all of those 1970's sitcoms. Sitcoms of the 70's will always remind me of my after school hours between 3 to 6pm. And when you look at the ending credits of most sitcoms back then they looked like they were filmed during the late afternoon early evening. The ending theme music for Jeffersons, All in the Family, What's Happening, Good Times, Threes Company and Taxi hits me and makes me feel a certain type of way.
There was always a touch of melancholy in those ending theme credits.
Wow. You are the Undisputed Champ Of Filming Locations. I could watch these all day. Thanks Kurt
I worked in a Lucky supermarket at the corner of Chevy Chase and Central in Glendale CA. Back in the 80's and Roger used to come by and do some shopping, I believe they used to film the spin off in some studios around there. Nice, pleasant individual
Correct. 'What's Happening Now' was taped at the Glendale Studios on S. Glendale Ave - south of Chevy Chase. I attended two tapings in 1987: Dee's 21st birthday as well as the final episode. Warmup between scenes was led by 'Double Dare' host Marc Summers. The 1989 to 90 version of game show 'Jackpot,' hosted by Geoff Edwards, was also taped at Glendale Studios, which were demolished a couple of years ago.
@@thetalkingarchive4795wow double dare! I haven't heard that since I used to watch it, what great memories back then
Gotta luv❤them 80's and the reruns! R. I. P.🙏!
Born in '76 so I'm definitely a kid of the 80's & this was one of my go to shows in the early 80's. I loved the premise & chemistry of the cast. Such a wonderful show..
1976! Woohoo 🎉 🎉🎉
Lol...WHY? It was DUMB
@@BAKER22-l4u Dumb for you but not to others! Why are u even responding bro! Stay of these feed if you don't have anything positive to say! Geez
This was awesome Kurt. I remember going to Roosevelt Junior High in Glendale in the 80’s and hearing that what’s happening now was filmed near by. I kinda remember seeing the cast at times.
I think when it comes to the 80s anything from the late 70s and early 90s is fair game for you! Great video.
This video brings back memories of my childhood 👍
Some of my earliest memories watching TV in the early 80's was the opening theme song to What's Happening!. I remember me and my brother must've been around 3 or 4 years old so (1982-1984) we would jump up and down to that song and try to do the dancing kicks like Rerun. So many great memories. Also, I always thought the filming location was somewhere in Inglewood, never thought it was in Hollywood.
Kurt, when I saw you were covering these locations I said "OOOOOOH!!!" just like Dee!! 😂
Excellent tribute!
Kurt…Man. I love your work. Thank you . 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Dude this is amazing!! I love this video! I loved watching WH as a kid. The 2-part Doobie Brothers episode was my favorite. Great work as usual! Love your awesome videos!👏👏
I used to love watching this show! I always loved the jokes, so simple but yet so funny. Rerun was also my favorite character
What a great show! Simple entertainment that made you laugh. You didn't have much to go on, but I think you nailed those locations.
Those are best shows. Simple and easy. No complicated plots.
Damn you are good. You deserve some kind of youtube award!
You did a wonderful job!!! Mimicking the characters is the best.
Thank you!
I loved this show growing up!! (watching re-runs in the 80's of course) Great job on your video.
Best RUclipsr on the internet, great vids, great information...rty for what you do brother
Hey Hey Hey! Whats Happenin was my favorite rerun back in the day! Well done man! 👻👏🏽
Mama! Yeah baby? I CAN'T BREATHE!!!
"Yeah, Raj, I'll help you out."
"You will? Oh, hey, thanks, Dee!"
"For fifty cents!"
I watched the show when I was a young WhipperSnapper. Great video here. Keep up the good work buddy!
PROFESSOR RETRO🚀
WOW. I just CAN'T BELIEVE what you find.... You are 10 years younger than me... And the fact you know about this fun unique show. AMAZES ME... JUST AWESOME....!!!!
I used to love watching What's Happening but have pretty much forgot about it until seeing this video.
Excellent work considering you’re working with old low res videos from the original show. I’ve tried to find some shooting locations of TV shows in NYC and can appreciate how hard it is to work with blurry old source material.
Been waiting for someone to do this!!! Great job as usual Kurt
Fred was so awesome. I grew up watching the original show. It was a totally funny sitcom. All actors and actresses deserve a big award.
one of my favorite shows i grew up with. i still watch it today. it's streaming on tubi. this show and what's happening now!
Excellent work!!
One of my favorite sitcoms...thank you for this! Good stuff brother.
Great job, as always.
What an ensemble!! I love this show!!
I literally just discovered where the opening credits were filmed about a month ago. Thank you for doing this! Like you, I watched the reruns in the 80s.
Such a great channel! ❤️ it!
HEY HEY HEY!!!!
fat albert ?
Nope, it's Dwayne! 😊 Fat Albert said it like "Hey Hey HEY!" And Dwayne said "Hey HEY Hey!" 😂
Hay hay hay! ❤
@@annabanana2974 oh!..like fuhgetta bout it
Dwayne said it, it was never Rerun.
Another awesome video, ty
Another great video!
You're absolutely amazing Kurt...You NEVER disappoint. Thanks for all you do.
I’m so with you on being obsessed with What’s Happening! I was born in ‘68 and watched it all the time.
I’m born in 1978…totally forgot about this show until i saw this! 😊
Thank you Kurt for doing this video. I still watch it on Tubi with my kids and love that opening theme song as well.
Loved this show
Cool memories thank you
Wow, I love the research and work you do! This was incredible.
Very well done!
Hell yes...a forgotten show. Loved it. Gave us a curveball there Kurt. Great work.
Thank you for this video. I am now in my 60s snd still watch the reruns. It was and remains one of my favorite shows.
This is brilliant.
Thank you for going to Fred Berry's burial site. He was one of my favorite entertainers when I was growing up.
My favorite TV show while growing up in the early 80s, along with taxi and the Muppet show
Great job! Love it!
Great job!
So cool! Thanks for all of your totally rad videos. I mean like totally. I am an 80s kid too! I went to Holmes jr. High and Monroe High! I miss these days so much.
Great work as usual Kurt
Great video!
Thank you for making these videos. I grew up watching these 70s classics. You’re the best
I normally don’t get emotional when i watch location videos, but this one definitely got to me oh man.
I love❤ this show and I still watch it! Thank you gor doing this bro. AWESOME!
I was born in '68, and too, watched this show in re-run (pun intended). Im glad youre covering 70s shows too.....Keep up the awesome work sir.
AKA syndication
What's Happening Now was taped at the Glendale Studios on 1229 S. Glendale Ave., which was demolished several years ago. 'Double Dare' host Marc Summers handled the warmup. When someone asked if the Rob's Place set was the same as the original series, he pointed out that it was actually several set pieces from Mel's Diner on the sitcom 'Alice'. They include the two large booths at the entrance - flipped 45 degrees to make the new set look like the original. The other part of Mel's was the larger counter and stools next to the kitchen on the right.
You are so good at mapping these locations out . I would say you're 100% right on the intro . 4:19 I'm so sick of seeing these ugly buildings pop up all over LA ....the change in the neighborhoods make me sad .
Thanks! Still my favorite show to this day!
OMG This is incredible! What's Happening Now locations next?
Great video Kurt. And those are classic TV shows from the 70’s and 80’s. Also, Martin Lawrence got his break on What’s Happening Now!!, before Do the Right Thing. 👊🏽
So cool, I was watching the reruns of What's Happening in the 80's. Dee and Rerun were my faves. I had a crush on Dwayne when I was little. 😂 btw... love your Prince hoodie 💜💜 .
Man, thanks for covering this great show. When i was a kid i loved this show. I actually met Roger at a Chrismas parade where he was one of the celebrities in Santa Ana when i was about 9. Nice guy. He wore the same kind of clothing and glasses just like in the show.
Gotta say that this one makes me smile a lot to see. My silly ass used to walk around Watts trying to spot locations from the opening.
LOL, remember when Rerun got busted making a bootleg tape of the Doobie Brothers? Pepperidge Farm remembers!
What doobie you be? lol
The Doobies were way to cool about that. LOL
I want to give thanks to you for creating such a channel, it floods so much nostalgia into my mind. Since this is a show mainly about the 1980's, my humble request and hope is that you can eventually do Bosom Buddies someday, a show I used to watch a lot in those days, although it only went through a couple of seasons. It's also one of those shows that had great theme music that seems to be really forgotten.
Thanks again 80's Life!
ReRun was also a great pop locker dancer, he used to dance with some friends of mine in inglewood ca 🌴 back in the 80s.
I was born in the 80s and grew up in the 90s, and in the 90s, What's Happening was a HUGE show. Tons of reruns and many channels they'd play it on. I even remember visiting Puerto Rico and seeing it there.
lol videos like this actually make me feel sad. I feel like the show is iconic because it's a special part of my childhood and being entertained growing up. But you see some regular bland street in real life that barely even looks the same.
The same with Rerun's grave. You assume this loud and bright character from your childhood is laid to rest in an intricate grave with fanfare. But its a humble grave.
Bro. The episode where the Doobie Brothers play live and Rerun gets busted trying to bootleg the show with a giant Radio Shack Tape Recorder. Epic What’s Happening!!
Love your reenactment s lol😂
Just did a rewatch of this show. It has so much charm. Dee's burns, Rerun's dancing, Dwayne's famous greeting. Roger was also a talented lead. This show makes a lot of great references to the time period. The Gong Show, Doobie Brothers etc. Sadly, there was alot of turmoil behind the scenes. Apparently, contract issues for the underpaid actors. Wish there was more of the original.
In 1975 I and my family saw Mabel King in The Wiz on Broadway. I was 11 and still remember it. We also went and had dinner at Benihana on west 56th.
Kurt, your passion for these videos is absolutely amazing! You have got to be one of my top most favorite RUclips channels
Loved this show and still watch it from time to time online. Great job! Could you do one on "Facts of Life"? I'd appreciate it!
Hey, Hey, Hey, Kurt…awesome episode! Thank You!
80S CURT,, WHAT A GREAT SHOW AND THE FINDS THAT YOU DO ON THESE SHOWS ARE AMAZING WOW!!! WHAT A GREAT THING TO SHARE WITH US.. AS A 70-80S ARMY MILITARY VETERAN,,,,, I FIND THAT GRAVE SIGHT WITH THE HOLE OF A PTR 2 US NAVY WORLD WAR II GARRETT MORRIS SHOULD BE REPORTED RIGHT AWAY ,, I FIND IT TO BE VERY SAD,,... FOR A VETERAN,,THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO..
Thanks for another great video! The grave at the end gave it a much different, but better IMO, feel to it. It was touching.
You are a man after my own mission. I have always wanted to know where the opening was filmed. THANK YOU SO MUCH
AWESOME!!!💯🌎
It amazes me how far down the shitter this country has fallen in many regards, especially race relations.
I grew up in the 70s/80s and a big part of my life was watching good times, whats happening, the jeffersons, sanford and son, etc...
The cast members were like family and I couldnt wait to get home from school to watch whats happening.
I never once had one thought of any racial bias and enjoyed watching the characters through their everyday challanges and successes.
I had friends from all races in school as it was in a large city. Simpler times, the media and race baitors have really made a mess of things.
I loved the first 2 seasons when it came out in the 70s, but the 3rd season got alittle silly and i stopped watching it. I had no idea Rerun was really that old, thought he was alot younger during filming. The story of the girl whom played Dee is VERY sad, later in life she got in a bad car accident with her dad and was paralyzed for a few years, then got addicted to prescription drugs.
You did a GREAT job finding & matching things up really well! Thanks for all the research and hard work!
Time to do the Rerun dance
As a kid watching this, never knew it was set in LA. I thought maybe NYC. Dee and Rerun were great!
Great stuff.
Great work! Love your vids. To answer your question about the hole at the grave, looks like its fairly fresh and since you said it rained alot recently, thats a sinkhole. The employees need to pack it down more and probably add more topsoil/fill
I enjoyed both shows.
OOOOOO RAJ. YOU GONNA GIT IT! ..GIVE IT TO HIM MAMA..!
Growing up in Australia 🇦🇺 I never got to see “What’s Happening”. We never got it but I did watch the reruns ( no pun intended ) later in LA
Dope ❤
Well done! I always thought they filmed the opening in South Central L.A.. LOL - i was wrong. But there was no mistaking the college location because i did a semester at LACC
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Also, let's not forget that the inside of Roger's house was also the same house used inside for Sanford and son as well...
Rerun was also on the 80s crime movie "Vice Squad" filmed in the streets of Hollywood. He played a pimp that gets killed.
Thank you for this video, I don't mind if it's from the 70s! I grew up in the 70s in Hollywood.
Please also do the TV movie"Dawn: Portrait of a teenage runaway" It was with Eve Plumb from Brady Bunch. She played a teenage harlot. It was filmed in the streets of Hollywood back in 1976.
You are such a good story teller with great research, your stories would end well with a visit to the cemetery if the person is deceased. Keep up the good work. New subbie.
👍😎great
