- Did you know that some of China’s 50+ ethnic minorities were nomadic hunter-gatherers all the way up until the mid-1900s? 🦌 Some of the older generation of Oroqens in Heilongijang and Inner Mongolia experienced the transition from a roaming life in the forest to a settled life in villages, and we met a few of them deep in the mountain villages near the Russian border 🌲 We learned not only about their traditional culture and ways of life, but also about the lives of the Oroqen people today. Minority culture is not disappearing, it is just changing its form and modernizing, taking elements from others like han, similar to how han culture has changed and modernized and adopted parts of other cultures as well be it chinese minority culture or foreign western culture, everything changes overtime and nobody should be sad of those changes, preserve the good parts of one's culture and create new things to add to one's culture.

Big agree！In China we had a saying 取其精华，弃其糟粕（Take the essence and discard the dregs）。
so touching to see these minority people happily living their simple life out there.
These people are integrated into mainstream economy better than any other hunter-gatherers people in the world.
Reason is that they have the largest brain volume in the world, which helps them to learn new skills better. Like Warren Buffett said, good athletes make coaches look better. Well these model minorities certainly make governments look better.

Talking about minority group, most of our thai chinese ancestors in Thailand come from the south province called Chaochou.I have personally visited my relatives there twice.It really gives me great feeling of having chinese ancestors.
It is actually Shantou from the Guangzhou Province. I am also from that region and the majority of Thai Chinese are Teochew and they are mostly engaged in rice milling. The region is famous for it beef noodle and porridge.
l too have relatives of Thai Chinese from my maternal grandparents side. My mother (GOD rest her soul) used to speak to her two eldest sisters(deceased) in Thai language. Those were the days. My maternal grandad had relatives in Thailand too. But after they passed on when my mom was a young girl, the connection stopped. My paternal grandparents has relatives in Fujian. If only l could trace my genealogy??? That would be awesome!!!
It’s called Chaozhou (潮州)in Guangdong province，my hometown. Most of the families there have relatives in Thailand,including mine.
People in Shantou or Chaozhou are mostly Han Chinese.

Thank you both for this video giving us some insight into to the culture of these ethnic minorities in China. Significantly, it is not the government which is directly trying to destroy their culture, as is claimed by some western politicians and media. Unfortunately, cultural dilution and eventual loss happens as assimilation, modernisation and migration take place. Good to see the government is making the schools teach the their own languages. Hope the young generation will continue to use them.

One of the main reason for government to settled nomadic indigenous people is the massive land that company industry and government wants from the indigenous all over the world , no matter from mining to wood resources, to farm to produce foods and medical plants for the giant capitalist market .

You know what's funny? I just saw an artical talking about history of red indians of the American continent. They did find evidence that suggests the Indians there are related to the chinese mainland.
Ofcourse all this was around 600 bc or ad. Very long time ago.
This video you showed us can relate very much to that finding as we can see that their original houses were just like the American Indians, the canoes just the same, the ornaments they wear is the same.
Now I'm wondering if these guys were the colonies of Red Indians then.

That’s the impression I got too, that maybe they are related , since didn’t the native Americans reach via the land bridge from Russia ? And oroqens are in Russia too. The elderly lady midway through the video said she visited the Russian side when she was younger . The oroqens there speak the same language and have the same traditions

Dont forget back in those days, BC, the land Mass(Map) of earth was not exactly the same as now, with earthquakes shifted the land Masses all around, just look at the Japanese archipelago shape, it looked like the breakaway from the East Coast of China n Korea. N according to Kyoto museum of the Emperor's ancestors, they were Koreans originally. The Natives of Hokkaido, the Ainu, looked similar to the Natives of the Siberia, according to Wikipedia, there were Russian Ainu n they are related to the Hokkaido Ainu in the Kamchatka Peninsular! Very interesting to see how human evolved from the same regions.
I personally believe that indigenous people in North and South America originally came from Asia because
1) they more or less share some appearance features of Mongolian people, especially the Inuit people. when I was a kid and I saw a documentary about Inuit people on TV I wondered how come there be Asian people in North America.
2) Mongolian people have been hunting and migrating since like forever ago, and a very very long time ago East Siberia and nowadays Alaska were connected by a "land bridge". it's possible they migrated from Asia to North America and then to the south.
@@kats_journey_east Because the area north of Heilongjiang also belong to china before, including sakhalin island and Lake Baikal. It was taken away by Russia through inequality agreement, so the Oroqen were artificially divided into two countries.

Really appreciate Kath's effort, you are literally turning into a Chinese folk culture expert, I just learned from Wikipedia that Oroqen people only have a population of less than 10k, hope the remaining Oroqen people can preserve their culture and language in a long term. On a side note, the scenery around these Oroqen villages is just breathtaking, looking forward to your next video.
Yeah they’re a really tiny group , according to the people we spoke with in the two villages we visited , their population never really expanded very much because of lack of medical care and limited resources and their lifestyle in general didn’t really suit huge groups of people

The name Oroqen itself is quite well known among certain generations of Han Chinese people, as one of their folk songs, called The Brave Oroqen, made it into the textbook of the elementary school music class.

some of their cultural elements resembles some groups of native americans. it could be there is cultural continuation all the way from siberia to alaska and canada, after all, it is likely native american were originally from asia. also it could be the way of living that make them similar to some of the hunter and gather native american groups. the other group evenks are more well known to the tourists since they are the reindeer herders. also both oroqen and evenks can also be found in Russia Siberia too
native americans did come from north asia, both culturally and genetically. however, as far as i know, oroqens and native americans are slightly more in common in culture than in blood.

Most interesting! The totem pole reminds me of the North American natives. Now I can see why they share similar DNA to the Asians.
Fascinating! I'd love to hear the reactions of indigenous North American people, to these cultures (Oroqen and Ewenki) with their birch bark canoes, teepees, dried skins, etc etc. It hardly seems possible that such things developed separately on both continents, and didn't travel over the Bering Straits. It's too bad the migrations happened so long ago that it's impossible to trace connections between the respective language groups. But how did the canoes & teepees remain so comparable, after so many thousands of years?? ~8^o
I was under the impression that academics now agree the first human settlers in North America came from the Far East side millennia ago by crossing the Bering Straits during a previous ice age?

My wording may have been ambiguous; I was trying to underline how weird it is that since that crossing (so long ago that the languages now show little if any similarities), _other_ cultural stuff like the canoes and teepees stayed astonishingly similar - it boggles the mind.
@@pbasswil I think that has much to do with whether there was strong external imperatives that led to the evolution of craftsmanship and tool-making, and the intensity of trade and exchange of ideas with other cultures.
@@edukid1984 I get what you're saying, but there are similar physical & climate conditions on many other locations on Earth; but it's just between these indigenous cultures in Asia and North America that the teepees and canoes show such _gob-smacking_ similarities. Yet there's been no cultural interaction (that we know of) between continents for probably thousands of years until modern times.
@pbasswil, I'm amazed that they lived in teepees like the Red Indians of North America. I'm pretty sure using DNA testing, link can be established to determine if they share a common ancestry.

I wish we have similar videos of our native Americans and other non-ethnic but different groups like the Amish, Mennonite, etc. Being in the states for over 50 years, I must admit, I have never been to a native American or Eskimo village. I have read about the Oroqen and remember seeing a video where their ways of living were compared to our native Americans. Again, thank you.

@@kats_journey_east Well it's just progress I guess. Assimilation is inevitable. It takes effort to preserve traditional culture. I am Chinese but grew up overseas and I am trying to reconnect with Chinese culture now as an adult in my 30s. Also, I am half-Hui but I have no connection to Hui culture. My father's family is Hui but they assimilated long ago so they no longer practised Islam, they were Hui in name only. (They did however keep Islamic funerary traditions and didn't eat pork.)

Katherine's vlog is such a good resource. I'd encourage every Chinese struggling to learn spoken English to watch and practice after these vlogs. I personally have learned tons of native English expressions of my Chinese style ideas that I tried to express in English but failed frequently.

Fantastic video about two ethnic groups I never heard of, despite living in Liaoning for several years. Hope they can keep the myth and stories of the culture going and pasted down.

I remember that deer hat! It became extremely popular, I think, last year in May, when the national congress meeting was held. One Oroqen minority representative wore this type of hat and became the famous representative under the spotlight.
And I remembered I saw someone in the comment said that his mom yelled "Look! A dear is having the meeting!"while she was watching that news.
Thank you for making such great video. The world need people like you, to tell the real and true story of China and Chinese peoples inclusive of all its 56 ethnic minorities.

Thank you so much for making this video for the world! I'm from Heilongjiang Province, China. But my city is named Qiqihar, which is by the language of another minority group, Dawuer. The places you have visited in the video are northerner to my city. I would like to contribute some extra information to your awesome viewers besides the very informative content.
1. Besides the minority group featured in this video, 鄂伦春族, there are many other minority groups in the northeastern part of China, mainly in my hometown Heilongjiang Province, such as 鄂温克, 达吾尔族, 达斡尔、锡伯、赫哲、和柯尔克孜. Most of them are quite similar to each other in terms of tradition and traditional lifestyle. They are also similar to the much more famous minority group 满族, which ruled China during Qing Dynasty.
2. For the viewers outside of China (even for some Chinese), you may not know that many minority ethnic groups didn't have their names like what they are now before PRC was established. Many minority groups were named due to many unreasonable reasons, although they may be the same in the past.
3. As mentioned in the video, when I was a student in high school. My ex-classmate, who is from minority group, could get extra point for their entry exam to uni. After living in Singapore, I learnt that India and the US also have similar policy to compensate the minority or lower class of the society. I'm not very familiar with their policy, so please correct me if I'm wrong. All in all, for those believes Chinese gov only does bad things to the minority groups, as a native Chinese person, I can tell you that's wrong. But I would like to mention the next point.
4. As in many other countries, the majority group takes the most of the resources and influence other minorities. I'm Han ethinic group. In my first 20+ years, I have never met people from small minority groups. For the bigger minority groups in my region, such as 回族, 蒙古族, 满族, 朝鲜族, I have some classmates and friends, but most of them don't know how to speak their languages and follow their traditions. But to be fair, many of our Han Chinese traditions have also been replaced by western traditions too. So, it is very sad to face that.
5. If I can suggest my gov something, I would strongly asked them to teach our future generation of the diversity of cultures in our hometown. Not just mention a few sentences in the textbook which no teachers really care about, so no students wanna learn. On this point, I really like what the Singapore gov has done to preserve the traditions and languages of different ethic groups in the society. I have done a reaction video about it. 6. Last but not least, the world is colorful enough for us to appreciate. China is great, the US is also great. Big country is great, small country is great too. Open our mind to see and learn what the world has to offer before we die.

I am half Hui (on my father's side) but I have no connection to Islamic culture because my father's family already assimilated long ago. They didn't practise Islam (besides not eating pork and having Islamic funerals). Also, my family is from Wuhan but I don't know how to speak Wuhanese. My parents always talked to me in Mandarin, however I can understand Wuhanese because I heard them talking to each other in Wuhanese. I also grew up in Australia so my main language is English. I haven't lived in China for 30 years. It is very easy to lose cultural traditions, seems like it's just an inevitable part of progress. I would like to learn more about Chinese culture because sometimes I feel like I'm missing out. (Australia is nice but very boring and there isn't much culture or history here compared to other countries.)
@@elvishassassin1 haven't been to Australia yet, but curious about the aboriginal cultures. I hope they keep their tradition well.
@@alexandermilanwang Hmm...it's debatable. A lot of it has been lost. The Aborigines met a similar fate as the Native Americans. In recent decades the government has been making efforts to preserve the culture but I'd say most of the traditional pre-colonial cultures and languages have disappeared. There are still people of Aboriginal descent living in Australia (I think they are about 3% of the population) but they mostly live like everyone else.

Very educational video. I won't be surprised if the Oroqen and Ewenki people are related to the Inuit and Eskimo people in North America.
The guy at the beginning of the video has been to Canada to meet some Inuit people who built boats similar to his and apparently they were all joking around that they look like brothers
@@kats_journey_east I see many similarities with Alaskan Natives. The Oroqen's old life style (hunting & fishing) is very similar to the subsistence life style currently practiced by many Alaskan Native today. The Oroqens in your video even look and act like native Alaskan. I have a question for you Katherine: I see the Oroqens had Mosin Nagant rifles use for hunting in the past. Are they allow to keep them if they are still hunting today?

Each village has different rules , Shi ba zhan doesn’t allow hunting as of 2010, in xinsheng 15 people still have hunting licenses but no hunting has been happening recently because of some swine flu concerns with wild boars , not sure if that rule will go on forever or they will be able to hunt again later . Not sure about the situation in other places but since the oroqen have become so integrated into modern society and very few people still want to hunt it seems the trend is moving towards getting rid of hunting altogether . It was allowed for decades after oroqen were settled in villages so they could stay connected to their roots but now most of those people are gone or very old
@@kats_journey_east Thank you Katherine. It appears hunting and gathering is not as essential to Oroqen culture as it is to Alaskan Native culture. However I could be wrong given that you could only interview a limited number of locals. Regardless, your videos and Miriam Follin's videos provide the only reliable information about rural China on the Internet today. Your videos are well crafted peppered with heartfelt content. May be you should compete in the same video contest which Miriam won first place in 2019. Your content is that good. Looking forward to your next video.
