L.A. Noire is a true gem from the ps3/360 era. It's one of the most underappreciated games of that time and gets over shadowed by the other rockstar games such as GTA, Max Payne, RDR, Man Hunt etc..

Just finished it for the first time today. Can honestly say the core heart of the game is the most original and era defining idea I’ve ever seen. I don’t know why more games haven’t adapted that style with capturing the actors face on the characters for the effect of dialogue to come through the screen.
Honestly only complaint is that the story kind of jumps from one thing to the next so you’re a little confused when things kick off but the gameplay is too amazing to not experience.
I don’t even watch crime shows or ever been really into cop dramas or police work in general but the way this game is designed is so unique it’s like experiencing a game ahead of its time even though it’s quite old.
If you haven’t played it yet honestly just pick it up and have a go because there’s no other game around that can give you that experience

Having a branching story and some side quests that are like Witcher 3 would be good as the witcher 3 is basicaly a detective fantasy game. I always wished that game Agent did not get cancelled.

It doesn't even need it. The story and everything is still great. It would look a bit cooler, sure, but it still looks pretty good, even by today's standards. Everything but the faces looks like a middle-of-the-road modern game, and the faces are better than most games coming out today.

I love this game. Bought it from the PS store (for my Ps4) last week, and iust finished it today. Beautiful looking game - and it cannot be stated enough just how incredible the facial animations are - I was utterly fascinated by everything being said, cut scene or not, because the mouth movements are so uniquely good. The open world too - this seems to be a point of debate - as some feel that its lacking compared to GTA. Well, I liked it. I liked that you were given a splice of L.A to explore, rather than an entire city - because it ultimately led to this feeling that there was the remainder of this huge city just outside of the border. What I mean by this, is thay they didnt have to squish the entirety of L.A into a world map - which often results in a really, really tiny version of real life counterparts. The city looks stunning - I was mesmorised walking around the place. Its also one of the only Rockstar games that has a serious AND believable story. I mean, even GTA4 had a pretty ridiculous plot - despite it being "darker" and considered more "toned down". This game is PERFECT at what it was designed to be.

Team Bondi (the developer behind the game) ultimately disbanded after the game was released due to reports of poor working conditions (leading to Rockstar dropping them).
Most of the IP was bought by KMM (an Australian Film Production company behind the Mad Max and Happy Feet films) where for a little while they worked on a sequel set in 1930s Shanghai (a super intriguing concept). Leaked early unfinished footage were leaked. However, in 2013, KMM canned their entire game studio division.

    Few things to note:
This game came right on the heels of Red Dead Redemption, so there was a lot of expectations that this would be “Grand Theft Auto: 1950’s LAPD Edition”
It wasn’t. Although there are a few references to Red Dead like the joke intro, shooting mechanics, and the twist ending. The story is also very good, like Red Dead, except the gameplay is completely on rails.
Back in the day (Early 2010’s), saying slurs and being “Savage” was considered positive traits in a protagonist believe it or not. Cole Phelps is kind of this conservative, sarcastic, by the books version of John Marston. He’s not unlikeable, although he may be considered a villain by today’s standards. Who knows.
I could totally see a sequel/spiritual successor to this game coming out. That has learned what it’s weaknesses are and mitigated them by fusing all the good things its predecessors used into it. A next gen film noire crooked cop open world game would be awesome!
Although, with the old Rockstar show runner leaving, the writing will take a nose dive, and the whole George Ffloyd thing is going to make racist cops pretty much an even more taboo subject in gaming to normalize.

  • @dastemplar9681

Too late?? NEVER. This masterpiece has barely aged and remains one of the most immersive detective games ever made. The atmosphere is perfect. The facial motion-capture still holds up and remains the greatest in the entire gaming industry. Each case is unique and not repetitive. Nothing feels out of the ordinary with twists that are strong but not too much to break the story or characters. It is dark, depressing, graphic, and above all, captivating. You really feel completely immersed in the City of Los Angeles in 1947-49.
My only gripe is that the open world of the city is WAY too big for a game that offers not much. There’s just not that much to do. Sure, there are side crimes and collectibles, but they really don’t offer much replay ability or significant value other than grinding for completion. Kinda feels like Mafia II, a very linear story trapped in an open world. But the game clearly focuses on the main story and main cases, and that is where L.A. Noire truly shines and makes every cent and hour worth it. Still a masterpiece and still holds up well.

It is never too late to play a video game. Why do you think the retro gaming community is so big? There are people playing games in 2024 that were released nearly 50 years ago. Classic Atari 2600 games are one example. It seems that video games get better with age. Nostalgia and reliving one's younger days are part of the appeal of playing old video games. LA Noire is a very well-made but significantly underrated game. It does not get the praise it deserves thanks to the GTA franchise. It's going to have a significantly high retro replay value years from now.

LA Noir is a flawed masterpiece. The late 40s detail is insane, no game has rendered Noir-era LA in this much detail. It is a labour of love. This is a James Ellroy novel Brough to video games, and anyone who knows Ellroy knows everyone in them are d*cks! The Rockstar-inspired (perhaps mandated?) chases and fights are frankly unnecessary and it would have been a better game if it had been more story driven and less action driven. The best way to think of the story is as a horror game, which is not the intention: as either a. Phelps is in purgatory and the whole game is a kind of flashback and reckoning with his past or b. Phelps is locked into some kind of King In Yellow/Carcosa nightmare (like true detective)….both I find give the games narrative drive more meaning….There will never be another LA Noir and we are left winding what Team Bondi could have done with their next project (Whore of the Orient) had things not gone belly up……..

Crazy how this "old" game is more enjoyable and beautiful than some games made in 2022.. and the city is even more alive than Cyberpunk 2077. Just play it and enjoy a great detective story and game.

Hey mate, I played the PS4 remastered version of it for this video on PS5, so haven't played the PC version myself. I have had the same question in the comment though asking about the performance of the launcher and the 30 fps (which on pc is still a thing like the console versions of the game as far as Im aware) and have had someone say that the bugs and the inconsistent frame rate has been fixed with patches. Can't confirm that myself though, if it's a good deal might be worth the risk, otherwise if you have a ps4/xbox one or newer it often goes on sale on those stores as well and might be a bit more reliable

The problem at the core of this game is how they depict dishonesty. I think they based lying off the myths we’ve all heard about lying. So every option is one fishy bit of body language after another. Like ok, he’s looking away and blinking a lot. Is that lying? Or he’s staring me in the face like a cyborg. Is that lying? In my only play through years ago, I never cracked the code for how the game depicts lying. None of it felt real despite the amazing facial animation tech. I know they wanted it to be intuitive. I think we’d have been better served by far more subtle, nuanced performances by great actors. Reading body language as a predictor of anything is a myth and it feels like this game didn’t know that. It’s unfortunate too because I really dug the rest of the game. Maybe I’ll figure it out and have fun with it someday. 😳 (I’m not lying?)
