Anyone who ever interviews a serious actor / star should watch this interview. Brandreth knows both their careers better than they do, he knows just the questions to ask, and he doesn't insert himself into the discussion unless he has something genuinely interesting or witty to add. Result: they both respect him, trust him and are therefore more relaxed and forthcoming.
“Can I borrow your barrier?” “Can we have dinner?” What an introduction! Thank You Giles Brandriff for leading this marvelous interview in your oh so genial way. Quite the trifecta.
I love the way that Dame M is so interested and focused on what Kathleen Turner says. So down to earth, grounded and also modest. What a wonderful woman, wonderful actress, great, great talent. Witty, charming. People say ‘Legend’ a great deal. But she was. Already greatly, greatly missed. The world is a poorer place without her precious soul.
Thank you for posting this, who would have thought they would be friends! I wish he would of asked how they both felt about Eileen Atkins. She and turner hated each other.
What a wonderful, respectful, relaxed, and honest interview this is! Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. I'm still processing Maggie Smith's passing as she was one of those fixtures in our lives that made it seem she'd outlive each of us. I can't tell you what a pleasure it is to listen to each of you pay such attention to one another sharing. Brilliant. 💌
Many are questioning whether this was truly Dame Maggie's final interview, but she was always known for giving few interviews and being intensely private. Also, the description clearly states it’s from 2021. Instead of debating it, simply appreciate this masterclass in interviewing. We rarely had the chance to know her beyond the screen or stage.
What a delightful and unexpected interview. One of the things that I absolutely love about Dame Maggie is how graceful her hands are. She had the ability to speak volumes with just her hands.
Such a wonderful and interesting conversation and deeply touching. Brings tears. And chapeau to Gyles Brandreth for the tact and sensitivity of the way he draws out these two remarkable artists.
That was absolutely brilliant. I do love Gyles and Maggie of course. I would never have thought of Maggie and Kathleen having such a connection. They say opposites attract.
I was half in tears watching this, knowing Dame Maggie isn’t now around 😢 Gyles is such a good interviewer, I’m so glad this last interview was captured!
Another friend that Dame Maggie made back in NYC in the '50s was also a mutual friend of Julie Andrews and that was the actress Alice Ghostly (who was so hilarious in the sitcom "Designing Women") and that is how she came to be the one to accept Maggie's Best Actress Oscar for her.
I could of watched this for another hour. I haven't seen or heard anything about Kathleen in decades. And Dame Maggie may she RIP. She was such a wonderful actress.
It is absolutely wonderful! So insightful. I watched this interview in awe as this two lovely actresses recounted their life experiences. Thank you to the interviewer for having such warmth and putting them at ease. Wonderful!!
I live in London and remember what KT was doing the Graduate. People were so excited that she was here. I'm surprised they didn't have to shut down the entire street to manage the throngs of people. I saw her a few years later in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf and she was magnificent. Not all film/tv actors can manage stage. But she could. I'd love to see her again.
What makes her loss so much more profound is how well she looks / is...body,mind,soul and essence so complete. I'm not sure what happened, but she is so full of life here..just hurts more as I feel Maggie had so much more to give 😢
She was clearly very unwell for the last year - I knew when she didn’t come to Wimbledon this year or show up for anything with the Miracle Club. Aside from the Loewe photo shoot her last public appearance was at the Coronation and she looked over it poor thing
Never seen Gyles speak so little , he clearly respects them both a lot. For those who don't know him, he's an interesting person in himself and broke records for speeches. He can talk to an almost athletic degree 😅
@@AndyRossism Gyles is an amazing man who can talk at length on most subjects he’s also written some books on the royal family including Queen Elizabeth ll, Prince Phillip also Charles & Camilla.
I worked with Maggie wayyyy back in the early 70s in Spain on 'Travels'. We both ended up on the cutting room floor. A story I've dined out on for over 50 years.
Maggie looks so different in this, her hair, her clothes, her gestures, almost like a "teenager", very "youngish", love it, I'm used to seeing her dressed like an old lady, a grandma, but not here
Her career was very long and demanding, during those over 60 years for sure she had her ooos and downs. She had very strong mentality and even when she was contradicting herself she wasn’t very hard on herself, with such a big expectations from industry and people, deep down she probably was which is not easy to handle. Being on the set sometimes she was „ dropping”her ( very high) acting skills to help other actors to get the scene right which I found very tactful. Plus people during old age can be much more melancholic. For sure she was a true Dame in her profession. May she rest in peace 🙏🏻🫶🏻
Maggie STOLE the VIPs from Liz & Dick. Their story was so slow, painful, and thick... Maggie's story with Rod was wonderful and fresh... and she was wonderful & fresh! So good! She owns the movie
Don't ask me what its actual composition was, but size was applied to scenery as a fire retardant. Theatre's then were terrible death-traps all manner of electrics for the sever lighting.
Watch Kathleen Turner’s expression at 19:55, at the mention of Eileen Atkins. In her memoir, Turner recounts, during a period of poor health, how Atkins would purposely grab at Turner’s painful arms and hands with the intention of hurting her. She didn’t like Atkins at all.
Yes she did--In the summer of 1990 I saw Dame Maggie on Broadway in the brilliant comedy Lettice and Lovage, which was written for her by Peter Shaffer: AND I saw Kathleen play a superb Maggie (no relation to Dame M) the Cat in a marvelous revival of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. They say comparisons are odious and they are, as well as often ridiculous. Theatre gossip at the time said that Kathleen really, really wanted to win the Tony. Well in my view, they were both winners; but Maggie was at the peak of her powers in a play written for her; so the Tony voters voted for her. And I would have to agree. But both women were---marvelous; I was so fortunate to see them both! (By the way, I noticed in the interview that that subject was NOT brought up; the diplomatic thing to do, I think!)
