Same, I’m always confused whether a score considered good for US students is good for international or not. And if there are differences in strength of application as an international. Specially because most international student like me require decent amount of aid/scholarship.
9:50 Wrong. In some California public Schools we can't even take history until Sophmore year. Most districts follow what the UC system calls the A-G system, which states in order to apply for a Cal State or UC school they must have 2 yrs history/social science required and 3 yrs recommended
I'm supposed to graduate this year and I'm completely lost. On top of being a less than lackluster student, no one has ever helped me, they only said where I should be. They never helped me to get there. No one has ever told me how to choose colleges, how to apply, what college really even is. No matter the hours of research I pore into this subject, it never seems enough.
Consider taking CTE classes such as HVAC, Electrictian, automotive they make good money, you'll learn a skill and be marketable. College is not for everyone. Also consider the armed service. they pay for your college education!
Briana Berger I just wanted to say that I have watched your Stanford admissions video so many times. I hope to be able to also get to experience that for myself! (I’m currently a freshman and would love any words of advice you could give me) Your video has really pushed me and I just wanted to thank you so so much Briana!😊
Awww, thank you! I remember those times as a freshman and stressing out about Stanford lol In terms of advice, try not to be well-rounded. They want to see you focus on your passion and explore your interests. I did that and it worked lol. I did have a couple of clubs that weren't CS related, but it was obvious from my app that my passion was CS. Also, try to take the most challenging classes you can (stereotypical advice, but true). The admissions committee compares you, especially with academics, to your peers who are also applying to Stanford at the same time as you. So, keep up with your peers, especially those who are high achieveing. I took about 15 AP classes throughout my whole high school career (including senior year) (that is a lot! don't stress. It just happens that my school offers a lot of APs (~30 APs) and usually kids at my school who get into the HYPMS have 13 to 22 APs). It just depends on your school, and look at past students from your school that got into Stanford to see how many APs you should take. I also suggest researching into awards/scholarships for next year. I did this during the middle of my sophmore year and did it each and every year to keep on top of everything. I plan on doing a couple of how to get into stanford videos where I focus on advice and some general concepts to keep in mind. I wish you the best of luck!!! I hope that you will be at Stanford in four years!
Briana Berger Thank you so much Briana! This means a lot to me and I just wanted to tell you how much of an inspiration you are to me. Even though it might seem like nothing that you replied it means so much. Again thank you so so much. I wish you the best of luck!!!
Thank you for making this video! I'm a sophomore, but I think I'm going to start preparing early for junior year now. Can you please make a checklist for seniors as well?
Great vid, I’m graduating a year early and found this very helpful, since I’m a sophomore going to my junior year”technically senior” I need to prep since I’m losing a year to 🤣
College list: any ivy league except UC Berkeley (lol) A&M (only if Brockman scholar is ez) and UT. Don't worry about me overshooting tbh I'd be surprised if I got denied by these schools.
Geez what ever happened to high school just being high school. There’s no way I’m ever going to waste my summer straining my brain and free time on a community college class. These expectations are outrageous
How bad of a situation am I in? I’m a junior and I have no extracurriculars during high school so far. I know the colleges don’t care about my excuses, but I was in four extracurriculars during 8th grade that all were canceled that year and the next due to COVID . Then I moved and missed sign up dates for a couple things and neglected to sign up for the others because I’ve been super anxious about that stuff. Now I’m becoming a junior and can’t bring myself to join anything. For the record I do pretty well in school. I have a 3.95 unweighted gpa and have taken every AP class that’s available to me. Also, not sure if colleges care at all, but I’m taking a semester abroad my senior year.
I thought the same too! I just looked on the UC requirements page and it literally says that you only need 2 years. UCSB requires u to have at least one college history course and UCLA requires you to have a B or better. Maybe she meant 4 years for international students?
Sorry about that! It looks as if requirements have changed I think since I worked with that particular student who needed 4 years (though at one point I believe UCLA did require 4 years for liberal arts candidates in some programs)-- requirements also vary school to school and department to department for special programs. The point is to look up what you need at the caliber of school you are applying to and make sure you're reaching those requirements!
Thanks Brooke! Also I love your videos they have helped me so much!!! Please keep up the great work and I think a lot of people would love more videos if possible about How I got Into ______________
All of those videos were done by people who worked for us over the summer. It all just depends on who we get to work for us and who actually wants to be on camera. We'll try to get some more of those up as soon as we can.
Hello! I am high school student and my GPA is 3.12-3.3 but have 2-3 subject tests 750+ and SAT Reasoning 1400+ And GPA is a problem here ( Could u please make a really short video for look of the college admission deans' in terms of being academically strong ? Thanks beforehand!
She literally freaked me out. You don’t need 4 years of social science, you need 2. You can look it up on the a-g approved UC list online admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/requirements/a-g-requirements/index.html But it may also depend on the school and program you are going for.
I have a question.... I'm a Junior and I'm taking the SATs this spring and I'm really stressed out about it. I tend to not do very well on gereralized tests. (Ex: PERT/PSAT) But, I have straight As in every one of my classes so far. I've also been taking most of my classes at our local college through Dual Enrollment. (I also have straight As there too) My question is if I end up doing badly on my SAT will that really lower my chances of getting into a good school?
Rachie- Face college admissions is based on soooo many factors, not just standardized test scores! It is okay if test scores are lower if another section can make up for it!! Test scores aren't everything. I just finished applying to college and essays and extra curricular are just as important and I wish I spent more time on those that stressing over test scores (: all the best, good luck!!
markallenwils I took about half of the classes I needed for my junior year at our local college. They usually only let you take classes that count towards your high school diploma, so I’ve been trying to take many of my classes there instead of at the high school. I think it’s a really good idea to take them if you can, especially if you want to save money for college in the future! 😄😄
Hi Brooke! I've watched tons of your videos and I really loved how you summarize all the tips, especially for ACT and college administrations, so thank you! As a freshman, I took the ACT and did pretty terribly (I didn't even meet the benchmark scores), but I've been preparing to take another one this coming July. This next school year, I will be a junior which means I will be provided another ACT that's given by the school to all juniors. So with my circumstance, can I submit my highest scores from each subject to colleges I'm applying to or do I have to send in all the scores I get?
Anna Chen it depends on the school. Some schools "superscore" your ACT, aka only taking the best parts from each test, and some schools only take the test with your highest composite.
I need your help to raise my sat score by 100 points by June 2nd! I’ve done so much studying and idk what else there is to do but all I want is to raise my score to have a chance at my dream schools! I need to go from a 1200 to a 1300!
Hey everyone, I’m a German exchange student and i’ll stay in California for a school year (I’m going to be a Junior). I’m a straight A student here in Germany and also participate in a bilingual class (Geography and Biology in English since 7th grade). I’d like to choose AP Biology or Chemistry, do you think that I could do that? I’m panicking that I’ll not understand the matter (although I scored the highest Eltis test score) Help me😫
By the way I didn’t take psat cuz during that I was in my country for a reason is it ok graduating without taking psat my school peers have told me I didn’t need it and even one of my teachers have told me
Camilly Gippy yea it is. Go outside and play or hang out with friends. You don’t need to be here watching college videos. Wait until you’re at least in 13-14
I’m about to enter high school and I’m already stressing about collage 🤦🏽♀️I’m going to do great in life. Also I was just wondering is it better to take the SAT and the ACT or should I just take one and also can I take them more then once if don’t like my score.
Hey! You can always take past ACT and SAT tests online. Although they don’t count towards your actual score, it’s definitely good to have practice and figure what’s best for you. When it’s time for you to take the actual test, you can take both if you really want to and if you’re not satisfied you can always take it again, but it’s usually recommended to not take it more than 3 times because the chances of getting a higher score are pretty low. Hope this helps!!
I would say to judge your score in each section based on how much you think you can improve it and set a specific goal for each section first. This will help you figure out which sections to focus on in order to reach your target score. in terms of actually raising your score, I would just try taking as many practice tests as you can. If the issue is pacing make sure you time your practice tests and work on your speed but if the issue is knowledge I would start working through practice problems whenever you can and not worrying about time that way you can become familiar with the problems. Hopefully this helps, I am currently trying to raise my science score by 6 points and I think my main issue was time. I was able to get a 36 in math and my main strategy for timing this section was to start from the very last question and work backwards since the questions at the end are much harder than those at the beginning. I'm not sure if this will help at all but this is what works for me!
You can start with practice tests. Your score will increase as you learn more in your hs classes. My score increased 10 points between the end of eighth grade to the almost end of freshman year. Since then I’ve increased it another two points. For now, start to get ahold of the timing. You don’t have to do the intense studying in each area just yet, but do a little each week with practice sections. I really recommend the ACT online prep from ACT’s website. I couldn’t have raised my score much without it.
Sadly I don’t. I’m studying for the SAT but I’ve found that the official practice tests really help!!! It really helps me to actually sit down and time myself at home and take the practice test.
The official College Board resources and Khan Academy are good. Focus on which skills you need for each section. Generally speaking English is easier to improve than Reading because it is more rule based.
Hi, Can you make a video on transfer application? Actually, I'm an international student who currently studies in a community college in the US , so there're many additional requirements that I have to meet. If you can give me some advice about transferring application, that'd be awesome. Thanks
I got an 1140 on the PSAT because I didn't study for it..... But then I looked up if the PSATs matter and it says it is a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship??? Does that matter / if I studied what would be the chances of getting that? I planned on studying hard for the SAT but not the PSAT (I did a COUPLE practice problems), which I thought would be fine. But now I am kind of worried?? I know when I study I'll be completely good to go but GAHHHH

Thanks
We have one video on how I got into Berkeley that is a transfer experience-- you might check it out.
Thank you :))
So I messed up. I didnt take the PSAT because i thought it was stupid
SAT subject tests? Corona is laughing right now
And the college board is laughing now lmao😂😂
going into junior year, but i’m graduating early
I got an 1140 on the PSAT because I didn't study for it..... But then I looked up if the PSATs matter and it says it is a qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship??? Does that matter / if I studied what would be the chances of getting that? I planned on studying hard for the SAT but not the PSAT (I did a COUPLE practice problems), which I thought would be fine. But now I am kind of worried?? I know when I study I'll be completely good to go but GAHHHH
Can you do this for senior year please?
Thank u this helped a lot
what age do you have to be to enter jr college courses
the uc system doesn't require 4 years of history, lol. I know because my schools graduation requirements literally are the a to g requirements
Junior year is over but yes
Can you get to the video instead of spending ten minutes asking us to subscribe
Hello I'm currently a junior is there any important deadlines that I should be aware of?
Do colleges look at my GPA if I am an international. It is impossible to convert ...
What if you are an international student and you need financial aid for summer courses at USA?
What do you think of gap years?
Can AP Exams replace SAT Subject Tests?
