As an SSP alum and current Yale student, I 100% recommend the program to anyone that’s interested in pursuing STEM research on the future. There really is nothing like it, and I still look back on my time there and miss the late nights in the lab and the early morning lectures.
Hello, I am wondering if you had any stem extracurriculars before getting admitted to SSP. I am currently doing math, physics, and astronomy olympiad and I am hoping to get accepted to ssp
I am planning on applying next year when I am a junior. I will be taking ap calculus bc next year and ap physics c. do you think i have a chance of getting in? Sorry about all the questions. I don’t have many strong extracurriculars so I am worried
Before my freshman year, I did ger2i at Purdue university. It was a research program with many classes. There were also many international students from china, the Korean science academy, Greece, etc
Great info! Please note that some of these have very particular requirements relating to age and residency. For those of you interested in the NIH program, you have to be 18 years old. They changed the structure of the program. The HOPP program asks that you have a permanent residence within 25 miles of the hospital, so that makes it more of a local program for those in the area. The Stanford one gives priority to those that live in the Bay Area.
I am also in my senior year of high school and I wish I was aware of these opportunities when I was a Freshman. Also great videos! Your advice genuinely helped me a lot when I retook the ACT this month.
Awesome! Yeah - some of these opportunities, especially the bonus ones, are really cool! I'm glad that the videos are helpful. I'll try to put together a playlist soon of all my top, most helpful videos!
i am from a really small community school, i wish i was also aware of these opportunities while in middle and high shool. I bet you im a sophomore and none of my classmates even know neural networks
hi can you please make a video on promys math program , Is there any method of preparing for it ? or some tips and resources to help make chances of section higher , pls try thanks
Hey Rishab! Your videos are amazing to watch! I did my project on using electrochemistry to reduce lead contaminants in water, and I’ve recently qualified for ISEF team Canada. But this year, I want to try something with Marine research. Any suggestions?
Sorry! I don't know much about marine research. I think you should explore an idea that you find yourself and find interesting! That's the way I have always done my projects.
Hi @Rishab, I’m a parent of two young kids. My son is about to enter middle school. We just discovered he’s gifted. How did your parents support you throughout your journey and when did you start figuring things out on your own? I’m a 2nd gen immigrant and my parents didn’t know how to help and support me. You have amazing drive and I’m curious how your parents provided an environment where you could thrive. Did you go to public/private? Did they help discover summer programs for you? What was their involvement in your education? Thanks and amazing job on these videos!
I went to public school. My parents played a little role in my education after about 6th grade. In 6th grade I entered a talented and gifted program at my public middle school-enabled me to learn about advanced subjects & challenge myself academically. From there, I began to discover opportunities on my own and via osmosis - from friends and role models. I discovered science fair because my elder brother had done it when he was in school (5-6 years older than me). My 6th grade science teacher also encouraged me to participate, and it was a class-wide unit to write a research paper and do an inquiry/engineering project. From science fair, I met older students who recommended summer programs (like RSI, etc.) in which I took part in. At the national level, I was meeting very high caliber students, and we shared our opportunities & advice with each other. Once I was in about 8th-9th grade, I could find and research opportunities on my own. Good luck!
Are there any online summer programs? I am from Poland ( far away from US ) and i want to go to a summer program but I have few possibilities to fly to the US so I think about a online program...
I haven’t yet attended any stem summer camps but I am about to attend Code@TACC Robotics. I don’t think it’s really competitive or prestigious at all but yeah it’s my first since I just graduated freshman year and I’m excited!
I just realized im so young for my grade I cant do half of these. Im a freshman right now but most of these require me tp be 17 but I turn 17 a few weeks before senior year starts…
Hi Rishab, I'm a 7th grade student based in Memphis TN and I am very invested in the HOPP program. I know I am only in 7th grade, but I was going to ask what extracurriculars, competitions, etc. should I do to get ahead. Thanks!
Hello Rishab, I’m a soon to be freshman and I’m pretty sure I want to go into the engineering field. What programs do you think are best for that, and how can I find internships on my own?
Hi Rishab, that’s an awesome video. Thank you. Could you please let me know if there are programs for design especially game design and / or literature? Thank you.
Sorry - I haven't heard of any. During 2019-2021, there were some due to COVID. However, I think most reopened back in person. Maybe try doing some research online.
Hey! I'm having the same problem as you and I'm planning to start a STEM channel where kids like us can also do STEM things they want to do. Would you be interested in joining?
Hey Rishab, the video you have made is really so helpful. Just one question, I am a U.S. citizen but I live in India. I am insanely interested in making model rockets (including fuel), but I am not aware of any recognizable platform where I can showcase my skills. It would be really helpful if you could guide me to any opportunities in India or the U.S. in the field of model rockets.
the uk has a thing called the UKROC, and there is an international stage for the competition, so i'd check that out. i did want to do it, but neither me or my school have the funding for it lol
Ok soo ngl I am the one who loves astronomy and space and have tried and got accepted to Polygence Mentorship Research and got a 1500$ financial aid however….. I need to do more and tbh even if I search google I just can’t find some great yet competitive programs. Any opportunity you know for the ones who love astronomy? P.S I am from India and ngl our school is awesome and provides amazing opportunities but ofc not for astronomy 💀💀 Also very important: Please do make a video which targets programs which are held virtually and are prestigious as yk international people can’t always do too much travel 👁️👄👁️
When is the soonest you would recommend? For example I am a sophomore and I’m willing to join as many programs as I can (that I’m eligible for) so any programs for 10th graders?
Hi! Update. What have you done since then? I'm a 10th grader and I feel a little late to start STEM programs. I wonder what you did. Do you have any suggestions?
I live in india, and my school doesn't offer any EC's or sports competitions. And the school hours is 15 hours, 7am-10pm. So, i really don't have time for any hobbies outside school. Can someone recommend something for me?
Hello Rishab. I got a question. I'm a freshman, and I kinda messed up my grade(3.2 unweighted, I did very well in STEM classes, and I was horrible at non stem classes), and am taking 1 AP exam, AP physics C mechanics. I know quite a lot of physics and math, and have applied for PROMYS, but I have to see if I get in, and I got a few ecs. Do I still have a good shot at getting to Ivies/MIT if I improve my grade significantly the next 3 years and get great extracurriculars and programs(like olympiads, and hopefully ISEF)? Uh, I'm also an international student. Sorry bout the long question, but an answer would be appreciated!
i’m not a college AO so i don’t know but my opinion : if you have demonstrated stem rigor / major achievement outside of grades, and/or have shown a steady improvement in grades (ie better grades in junior year) then i think it’s probably ok? a better resource than me is doing research about this topic online as there are probably a lot of students who have had this question in the past. i personally haven’t, and so i don’t know too much about it hope this is helpful!
Im going into my sophomore year, do I have enough time to do internships and research? I’m interested in compsci and architecture. I don’t live in the US either and where I am they’re really quiet about fairs and stuff. What’s the best way to get awards for your application?
Im a rising sophomore, I feel like if you want to do research you should contact professors at you’re local university, but before you do that you should see what type of research they do and see if it’s in you’re interest. Hope this helps

Simons SRP is way higher in the list imo. Unlike SSP, you get to produce your very own individual research, rather than as a whole group. My friend chose them over SSP last year. This year acceptance rate is less than 5% (45 accepted/~950 applied), lower than SSP's. also, only two applicants are allowed per school, making the applicant pool even more competitive. Simons is free (the 3k is for rooming if you chose to, +$500 stipend), unlike SSP
