My kid went through the college application process recently. From experience I can tell you this video has some very good advice. If your kid hasn’t already done a lot of research into the process, this video is probably the best place to start.

My advice unless you want medicine or law go and study in another country. I studied software engineer in Mexico and after graduation I got a job in a top company in the US. My college was as good or better than my coworkers and I was free of debt. The colleges in the US are ridiculous expensive and not worth it for most bachelor degrees

By all means, do apply to IVY league and other elite schools for undergrad if thats what you want. However, its no big deal if you dont get in. The dream is not over. You can still go to an IVY or some other elite school for graduate school. Just keep your GPA above 3.2 and do meaningful internships and get involved in projects related to the field of study you are intetested in. Just strive for excellence in the things you are interested in and you will be ok.
