DJI FPV: Max Flight Time Battery Test - How Long & What Happens

    The specs say the DJI FPV has a max flight time of 20 mins at 40 kmh. So I use Cruise Control to test how long the maximum flight time I can get from the DJI FPV when flying at 25 mph or 40 kmh and what happens when you fly right down to 0% battery. I show what happens with Low Battery Return To Home kicks in, along with Critical Battery Auto-land and Critical Battery Forced Landing, and which controls you can use to override is necessary.

      do not charge it and fly without a break for the batteries
      keep the battery always dry and warm underneath your jacket before you fly
      in summer with higher temperature you might find the 2 missing minutes I guess.
      If you pick an electric car like an e-Golf and drive with 3°C ambient temp. than you will get 150 km range and about 20°C you will get 240 km of range.
      Yes, different cell chemistry and each works a bit differently, but all the Lithium cells perform better in warm conditions.
      Good luck for an early and long summer for great fpv flights

      @sandyleask92 3 года назад +7

      This is true however in practice no damage should be done to your battery. That 0% battery (%) isn't really 0%. The battery controller is programmed to 'always' have enough for the drone to land. The drone should never fall out the sky for obvious reasons especially at a high altitude. This is why it overrides your controls eventually. For homebuilt drones running your cells to 0% is the real 0% and will do damage.

    OK first question is why S mode for the test!? Isn't it N mode or whatever the normal mode is!
    Also I think that DJI means 40km/h in a straight line! Every turn you make uses more power than just if going straight cruising at 40km/h..
    Very nice test though, for what you could do alone, it's sweet...
    Keep well and be safe Ian!

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  3 года назад

      Fair questions. 1, S Mode is the only mode for Cruise Control, and I didn't fancy watching my speed for 20 mins. And yes, of course every turn eats into battery as I mentioned after I landed. Maybe a hover test would be the perfect control test for their stats....

    You have to run them through a few charge cycles before they get 100% efficiency. Everyone has different opinions but I have some old spark batteries. That still seem to function pretty much like they did when new. The first few times I pushed the batteries. 100% to 0%. After landing I would slowly finish running it down to 0. After that usually don't ever go below ten %. Don't leave them laying around fully charged unless your planing on using them in the near future. I know own four different drones. Think I need to go get my head examined soon.

    • @silverspork86
      @silverspork86 2 года назад

      are spark batteries lithium ion? You never wants to take lithium polymer batteries to zero. That's how you get them to swell when you charge them again. Just as bad as overcharging.

  • @artifixprime
    @artifixprime 3 года назад +1

    Interesting to see this from the "traditional" FPV view where you're watching arcane things like battery voltage :) Back of the envelope calculations - the 24% return to home point is approximately 3.3v per cell (assuming the max cell voltage is the usual 4.2v) so DJI are probably being sensible enough in getting it to turn around at that point to preserve the life of the battery.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  3 года назад +1

      I don't watch anything like battery voltage... I let the app do that so I focus on flying or filming... :) But there's no doubt DJI have the circuitry to protect the battery from people doing things like me... ;)

    Thanks for the down to earth and common sense reviews Ian. Almost always within 400ft and VLOS the safety limits. Having flown RC fixed wing aircraft I guess the fpv is similar, the advantage, you don't need a runway. however the goggles seem very clumsy, When worn you can't see other approaching aircraft or potential criminals. So a spotter is essential. Looks like great fun though. I just get dizzy trying to keep up with the camera's movements.
    Got my 1st drone dji air 2 recently and beginning to think I've made the better choice. The altitude here in Johannesburg is 5,751ft Above sea level, with the thinner air the dji air fly's for aprox 24 minutes, gimbals work great and the camera functions are excellent. My guess is the fpv would only fly for aprox 12 minuts at these altitudes, but would love to hear otherwise. Interesting point a done can weigh up to 7kg in South Africa.

    • @IaninLondon
      @IaninLondon  3 года назад +1

      Unless you really want FPV flying and footage, you're way better off with the Air 2; it's a great drone and yes, you'll have far longer flight times. Cheers, Ian

I would think the drone would be using less power for flight, ie 30KMPH versus 60 KMH, etc. Maybe because that's your favorite mode to fly in? I was going to try this, You’ve saved me the trouble :), I had purchased 4 batteries for this very reason of low flight time, Hopefully there is a firmware upgrade to increase flight time in the less power intense modes!. I seen your manual mode flight video, Have you been practicing the dji flight simulator since? I gave up with it because it felt nothing like the way this dji drone flys in terms of weight and speed, I downloaded a piece of software called liftoff on steam which allows you to connect your dji controller to the pc for a more “realistic” flight, Highly recommend it for practicing the manual mode

What they mean it's just hovering in space and it did last 47 minutes but obviously when we move or draw I'm just going to consume more power. So literally what they're claiming is just hovering in space for both drones will last do the same test with fpv I have not done it with mine yet but I'm pretty sure we'll get the 20 minutes if it's just like standing and place.

It's temperature extremes that impact lithium-based chemistries 50.℃), not so much their charge state.
