Right on the money! Especially about the show comments. There are always Jazz Police, but if you want to make living playing music, play the style of music you are hired to play to the best of style and ability. That is why you are a pro! Cheers!
I’ve been doing this type of sax performing for a few years, this is SUCH solid advice. Wish I’d seen this video when I started rather than figuring out the tough way! Great video, I’ll be reminded of this when I’m playing!
Faaantastic! I'll use this in my next gig! Now to the playing like Maceo video! I keep on getting recommendations from other DJs but i can easily improve and turn their kindness into acual skills!
Seeing Lovely Laura and Ellie Sax playing live in Ibiza is what inspired me to learn the sax. Ellie Sax is SO good at complimenting her DJ's sound. So this video on playing sax to house music is right up my alley. Totally agree with your notes on noodling. Nothing worse than a sax player noodling over the melody or worse the vocals but it is so good to hear it build up to the natural peak in the music with that blast of altissimo. I love that one of your biggest hits is "Finally". It's one of my all time favourite house tunes.
Excellent video and I love your example 👍👍👍. Never done this live but I practice over dance tracks and I try to find bits in the music I can do call-and-response to as if it was a real band.
The main reason that I started learning saxophone was to be able playing with DJ one day. Such a divine match! Can you make more videos in this genre? Covering some parts such as, matching the rythems, which sax licks go well with those deep house musics..... Thank you that you share beautiness so gracefully.
at 9:22 Demo Very Nice Dance Groove! Where can I get a copy of that backing track? is there a collection of these type backing tracks somewhere for me to practice Jamming with a DJ ??
Just Out of this world Playing with a Dj just excellent.I am Dj and have started playing Alto saxophone after 35 years but blowing instrument is keep people Rocking I know what is funk blues pop house jazz tak house. And proud of you to learn the techic to play with the Dj.Thks a lot will learn more tecnic to play for you Thanks long live the music 👍👍
Great video. If I was to learn one saxophone house track to start with which one should I pick in your opinion? I’m a dj learning sax. I want to play an easy crowd pleaser
Did you have a delay with the tempo pad and for every song you tap a tempo for delay or are all songs played by DJ in one tempo? Or maybe you use fixed delay settings for all songs? Thanks for tips.
Great! I'd noticed that most dance music was minor. I thought you might mention choice of alto or tenor. I had expected you would prefer alto to cut through, but you didn't mention anything and did your demo on tenor. Do you always use tenor?
@@GetYourSaxTogether Thanks. And a sax playing friend of mine also mentioned the pitch issue. When DJs alter the speed, the pitch changes and he points out that it's easier to manage on alto.
Been there and done that. Nothing beats KISS! Pentatonics and rough squeals to the rescue. Love how you create a motif or riff or whatever everyone's calling it these days, and then play with it without creating some kind of noodled chaos. This stuff works with even cover bands that play for clubs or dances. Great demos. Perfect advice, as always.
I loved this lesson. I first watched during Covid. A couple of weeks ago I had a gig with a couple of DJs and watched on the way to the gig. And they asked me to do it again tomorrow. Thanks Jamie. You and Scott Paddock and Jay Metcalf have improved my playing by 1000%. I’m a disability support worker who barely played his sax and now I play it every day.
Great episode Jamie. Stunning playing as usual and top teaching tips. Saw Too Many Zooz live last night. Leo P takes the rhythmic, no noodling playing up a couple of levels.
Yeah. He was basically holding down a house bass line all the time. Doing it like a boss too. Relentless. The kids were loving it, but I like some noodling too, guess I’m just too old for that type of thing. 😉
Hey Jamie, awesome lesson! I do loads of sax dj gigs, could you do a lesson on how to put guitar pedals like delay and wah wah through a PA system? I would really appreciate that!
Best of luck with the open mic Sonja. I’ve played at a few, with other musicians and with backing tracks. Playing live with other people is one of the reasons I started in the first place. It’s good when strangers come up to you afterwards and say how much they enjoyed it. I’ve made some good friends at open mic nights.
OMG that Layo & Bushwacka tune is my favourite song ever!! Can't believe you played sax on that! :-) don't suppose you can do a tutorial or provide sheet music/demo for it? Amazing!! :-)
Wow - that was a bomb episode! Always wondered about the setup used by Sax Players when playing along DJs. What kind of equipment is used to do a reverb while playing live?
Mike Wilbur and Leo P were playing with a DJ once and bc DJs will mess with pitch on stuff they said at one point their mouthpieces were all the way out and they still couldn't get in tune lmao.
Now you're talking. AWESOME demonstration of your skills. Very much appreciated. Not in a million years I will be able to reach that level. Not even with your TTM course. ;-)
Great stuff! I love jazz, love funk, love blues, and why not, I can also enjoy all types of electronic music. I never understood people that limit themselves. By the way, could you point us to the demo you used for your solo? (or something similar). It would be nice to give it a try.
@@GetYourSaxTogether what? You mean I would have to spend a few minutes to get something similar? You clearly don't know us, RUclips users...😅 J/k of course. Thanks for the info!
Jamie, can you mix it up with a minor pentatonic/blues scale a minor third below (assuming you are in a minor key) or is it best to stick in the main key centre? Another great session. Thanks. 😀

Nah, vintage Otto Link.

I do fixed - most times the tempo is the same for house stuff.

Actually, typically I think I’d take alto to a gig tbh. Cuts through and has that extra punch.

Lets see your pedal board!!
Ha! I mainly just use a DOD envelope filter and a small guitar multi effects unit. The best one is the Strymon Timeline though.
is it important if u play tenor or altsax on these kind of gigs?
i tend to enjoy playing tenor more however mostly i see people playing altsax :)
I don't think so!
Brillant
Thanks Phil 😀
Plz gv me notes sheet with details of this
No transcription available I’m afraid - you’ll have to work it out yourself! It’s all an F minor blues scale for tenor though.
