  • He sold the car over 20+ years ago when he was an alcoholic. Said he probably would have died in it. This is the first time he saw it since he sold it over 20+ years ago. The car does look in relative good shape, we have no idea what has been done with the car over the past 20 years. It obviously wasn't sitting there for 20 years and nobody claims it to be. Pay attention, people. 1964 Buick Rivera. 425 Wildcat V8 w/ 427 horsepower.

    So many of these older guys buy up old cars like this, sit them in a field and never do anything with them. They will have dozens - maybe even hundreds of old "project cars" sitting around deteriorating. Always say they are going to restore it one day but never have any real intention to. Then when a person comes along with the skill, money and desire to buy and restore the car they still refuse to sell it. They will either flat out say its not for sale or they will throw some unrealistic price on the car to chase the buyer away-as in this case. The guy asking 10,000 for this car more thank likely has no intention to ever sell it. He would rather see it sit there in that field on his property and rot away until the day he dies than to let it go to the hands of someone who might do something with it.
    Its kind of like that TV show Hoarders in a way, only instead of filliing random items in the house they refuse to get rid of these guys hoard cars.

    He doesnt want to sell, he's never gonna sell. He just likes the attention the car brings him.. I know a guy that has nothing but chevy's...from 1952 up until a 1971 chevelle..
    All impalas, chevelles, el camino's and corvettes... they just sit in the snow and rain and changing temps... i managed to get 2 off him in the 20 yrs ive know him.. A 65 impala SS and a 70 chevelle....I restored both...."The rest are still sitting ..he says he's gonna get around to restoring them... He turns down reasonable offers...He just likes the attention.

      +austin tatious He sounds a right fruit loop. A guy who lives near me has loads of Trabants he bought mega cheap when the Berlin Wall fell. There must be around 50 of them yet all he does is leave them rotting away on a large field he owns. Of course in 1989 nobody wanted a Trabant....they were practically given away! But that was 26 years ago and now they are sought after collectable cars.

    I wouldn't give him $5k for that. It's not a Mustang GT, it's not a Camaro SS, it's not a Hemi Plymouth or Dodge. For him to try and get $10K is just a rip off. The sad part is its going to sit there and rot away instead of getting redone and put back on the road.

      I'm not saying that 10,000 is a fair price but you won't find as many of these as though other things you're talking about. These cars were very rare 20yrs ago let alone today. Yes, I would to do a full restoration on this car because there is nothing like this built today. That car is all american steel.

    • @Bayan1905
      @Bayan1905 10 лет назад +1

      Loretta Bain
      They are not as rare or valuable as you think. I have been around old cars since high school, and that was 20 plus years ago. I have had old cars, rare cars, and I am actually restoring a rare option Ford pickup now. I can tell you after looking online just today there are quite a few of these same year, same option motor cars for around 20K and under, and those are one's that are restored or very clean all original cars. To restore that car back to all original would cost 20K on a car you want 10K for. It's not worth it. Also, the motor is not a Wildcat, the Wildcat was a separate line of car similar to the Electra and shared the same style in general as the Oldsmobile Starfire. The Buick Riviera came with two engines, either a 401 Nailhead or the 425 Nailhead. The 401 was only 265 hp and the 425 was only 340 hp. Those were not exactly powerhouses when you look at the 409 Impala in 63-64 making 425 hp, the GTO making 368 hp with the 389 and the Catalina making 370 hp with the 421 V8. The Riviera is not a muscle car, it never was. It might be a rare car to some, (it actually isn't) but rare doesn't always mean valuable. I can tell you I have seen some "rare" cars sit for years because their owners thought they were worth more because the owner hasn't seen another one. One example I saw was a 67 Chrysler Newport 2dr hardtop with a 440 Magnum automatic tranny. The owner that the car was worth a fortune, it wasn't and he sold it for less simply because no one would buy it. If you try to squeeze 10K out of that car, you'll end up letting it rust to nothing, no one in their right mind who knows cars will pay 10K for that car when 20K will get you one done already or real close to it.

    • @fsca72
      @fsca72 10 лет назад

      The body might not be as rare but the 425 sure is. Take this for an example; the Air Force originally used 425's to power up the SR-71 turbines then later scrapped that idea because the parts for 425 were readily available. Nowadays it's nearly impossible to find a good block too work with.

    • @Bayan1905
      @Bayan1905 10 лет назад +1

      I can tell you that the 425 while a good motor, is not that great compared to the GTO and Impala's of the same years, which is why these cars are not worth all that much. A GTO of the same time span has more horsepower, as does the Impala 409 and 396, even the Olds 442 had more power. All of those are more desirable. The only way this car would be worth the $10K is if it was a 66 Riviera GS with the MZ option. There were only 179 of those made, they were the 425's with dual 4bbbl carbs. Like I said, you can find one all done for $20K, $25K.

    It's very strange how some people just buy cars, park them up in a field or wherever, and either want "silly money" to part with them or FLAT REFUSE to sell. They just like watching them rot away and take some kind of weird pleasure in depriving someone else from saving them.
    I once came across a 1965 Mk1 Mini (way more rare than Cooper 'S') in someones garden, just like this though covered in weed. Fortunately the guy who owned it was going to scrap it so i offered him the same money and he accepted. That was one Mk1 Mini saved!!

    GM should have given away 1,000 of these each year of production, everybody who sat in a Buick Riviera wanted one, they were that special. This car was exceptional inside for its time, when you opened the door it lit up. Smooth, handled like a dream, fair to great gas mileage for the time and mid sized... and fast!

    I found my '69 Firebird after 33 years. It was treated badly. Left outside to rust and missing many parts, including the engine and transmission. The owner was nice enough that he gave it to me. I built a garage for it and want badly to restore it. Got sick and am now disabled. Restoring it seems like it will take miracle but I keep praying.

    I had a 65. First year for the TH400. The single carb 425 was rated at 340h.p. but could be ordered with a 360 h.p. dual quad engine from the factory . Most mistake the torque rating (465 Wildcat on air cleaner) as the actual hp. Mine saw airplane like body lift at 100mph. Scary indeed!

    427 horsepower??? Where are you guys getting your figures? The 64 Buick 425 put out 360 horsepower, and that is SAE brake rating. Which means it isn't even getting 300 put down to the rear wheels.

    • @Strongholle
      @Strongholle 10 лет назад

      The engine doesn't have to be stock and doesn't look to be stock. He just says it's got 427hp which are totally plausible for a mildly modified nailhead. Also, people usually talk about engine horsepower and not wheel horsepower since it's a more precise unit.

    • @lorettabain1605
      @lorettabain1605 10 лет назад

      maybe it's a wildcat motor if you know what that is

    • @Strongholle
      @Strongholle 10 лет назад

      Loretta Bain It says it's a wildcat 425c.i. in the description. The engine in the Wildcat is a buick nailhead V8, with dual quads in it's most powerful 360bhp (SAE gross since it's before 1972) version. It already was a high compression motor so to achieve 425hp you'd have to get AT LEAST a new carb, intake manifold and most probably a more aggressive cam at least. While it can be a good performance powerplant, the nailhead never was a favourite amongs racers because it wasn't the most durable engine and it was a fairly old design compared to later big blocks. Like most buick designed powerplants, though, it was capable of producing insane amounts of torque.

    • @davidh1249
      @davidh1249 5 лет назад

      There's no way those little valves would support 427horsepower.The heads on those old Buick 425and 401engines were definitely their weak point.425 or so sounds about right for torque(hp in the neighborhood of'350).Those old nail head engines just couldn't turn enough rpm or flow enough air through the head to reach the 425 hp mark.

    Posted here many comments back. Keep crossing paths with this video. The front rake on the fenders had me hooked the first time I laid eyes on my 65. Very sinister in Midnight Blue lacquer and turquoise interior. Tires would howl when you lit them up. I ran a 401 with factory quadrajet. Switched to the optional dual Carters later on. Too much for the 401 on the low end, but the car screamed with the kickdown engaged and 8 barrels wide open. High revs were crazy with the dual quads.

    It became known as the"Nailhead" for the unusual vertical position of its small sized valves which were compared to nails since their head diameter is smaller than other comparable displacement engines of the same era. The engine used a camshaft with greater lift and duration to offset the smaller sized valves and restrictive ports.The heads sit on top of the engine block and match the bank angle, however the rocker covers sit level on top of the heads to accommodate the rockers and valves.

  • @MrXSeleven
    @MrXSeleven 12 лет назад +1

    Lots of potential there. Those old Nailheads were torque monsters... I rebuilt/hopped up a 425 for a customer (A priest!) and after it was done that car would shred the tires at will. I love those cast valve covers. Those engines were works of art with the dealer-installed dual quads. I used to own a 65 Special (way lighter) and can attest to the Torque and speed of the nailhead. You need to buy that car-not too often does one find a car they shouldn't have sold decades later. Thanks for posting

  • @Bayan1905
    @Bayan1905 10 лет назад

    Well, figure a motor rebuild, $2-3K if you have to spend to have it done, depending on the condition of the block. I would go through all the brakes, brake lines, master cylinder, etc. Another $1K if you have to pay someone, guaranteed the tires are shot, figure $500 or so. Any guesses on what the wildlife has done to the wiring? New harness, maybe a new radiator but you might get lucky with the one that's in it. Since this video is going on five years I bet time has not been any kinder with it. So figure to get the car moving again under its own power and being able to stop, steer, and roll, $5K on the outset if the motor is rebuilt. I bet there's lot of stuff that has gone down that carb. Nothing worse than a motor that's been left to sit. Given all that, I would walk up there with 2K in hundred dollar bills and put it on the table, if he takes it, so be it, if not go find something else. I know there's a personal connection but the asking price cuts an awful lot of ties.

    Lol its funny how mad the comment section is. Its his property, he can do what ever the hell he wants with it. I don't see a for sale sign on the car, which probably means he doesn't want to sell it. So don't get mad when you get a ridiculous price. Just because he sold the car and regrets it now doesn't give him the right to the car. Grow the fuck up.

    Thing about old American cars is they never get to a point of no return. They were built with real, thick, quality steel and can always be rebuilt. You'll see 1930s cars that have been sitting in the woods since the 50s that still hold shape and the doors still work. Most other countries are dumb to the American cars on the road. They seem to think all the cars are junk and cheaply built, always falling apart. Most of our cars have 200k+ miles on them and are still being driven every day.

  • @Skitchhiker

    @novachevyguy It really isn't that hard to believe. The paint is a bit faded, and the windshield is a bit cloudy, and the grass around the car looks completely undisturbed. Either way, even if someone had taken it out a year, two years, 5 years, or 10 years ago, it wouldn't matter much in relation to the video. Calm the fuck down and enjoy. Not everyone is out there to cheat you.

    @dirtbiker4lfe Dude, I wish. The guy that owns it now wants $10,000 for all 3 Rivi's in the video. I'd kill to have this car. It's ridiculously fast from all the stories my dad has told me. He's owned Cobras, Challengers, Cuda's, you name it he's had it. He said this blows the doors off them all. He told me he could tape a $100 bill to the dash, tach it up and if you could reach the money you could have it.

    The worst thing about videos like this is that the owners of these vehicles are never likely to get the over inflated sums of money they always seem to want for them, and they will sit there and deteriorate as the owners get old and senile, and when they eventually die and someone wants to clear the land you just know that there will be nothing worth saving.

  • @wvXvxvXvw

    Of course they don't look new and have bits falling off. They are all older than most of their drivers. When is the last time you saw an all original Lancia with 350k miles on it being used as a DD? There are a hundred thousand Chevy trucks on the road with those numbers. American cars are the most reliable, longest lasting, most well built cars ever put on the road.

    It doesn't matter how the valve covers are oriented, the cylinders are still opposed at a 90° angle. The valve covers on a nailhead are actually just very big and horizontal to the ground on top giving it an awkward appearance, but the pistons still all meet from both sides of the engine in the center.

    I know what you mean because it´s the same with older vintage/veteran outboards.....they are NOT rated at the prop but the engine itself compared to todays outboards.But the older ones are far more reliable.
    Cheers and take care

    @TheFordsforme The doors have vent windows, and the handles are pull-down, which makes it a '51 - '52. The '47 - '50 Chevys had no vent windows. The '53 had push-button door handles.

    I hate to tell you but 425 in 64 was more like 340 HP at about 4500rpm, the Edelbrock may have added a horse or 2 (but the rochester 4 brl was a great carb)but to get 427HP? It would take some cash and sweat. I love the old Riviera every since I seen one as a kid I loved the stacked hideaway lights

    • @davidh1249
      @davidh1249 5 лет назад

      Asa Hodges,The quickest way to get to the 425hp mark is to drop in a later model Chevrolet big block,or a built 455 if one wanted to stay in the Buick-Oldsmobile-Pontiac family.
