I did my senior thesis in high school on George Orwell. Fascinating. My English teacher assigned it to me. I knew nothing about the guy. And then I read the book 1984. I skipped a day of school so that I could finish reading it and typing up that long ass paper. It was engaging. The mystery is still alive. Open your eyes. Have the conversation others do not want to have. Do not let your thoughts be silenced. In the words of George Orwell, "Don't let it happen."

Am I saying trust the government? HELL NO! I'd be telling you not to blindly believe everything you're told. If theirs one thing that's very beneficial, it's skepticism. "In our world there will be no emotions, except fear, rage, triumph and self-abasement." I wondered if he shouldn't have included 'anger'; there is so much anger in America, name calling, put downs to any thought different from the centred, and this is especially true of Republicans and Democrats in their hate language. Then I looked again and thought, no, 'triumph' and 'rage' indeed cover it all. They are like an umbrella that covers all the lesser words of self importance such as self-righteous anger; as those with political anger so often feel that they know it all. They speak of 'triumph' with rage as if only They speak of the truth from clear eyes and mind. I am very pleased to have had the chance to view this poignant clip from a great man. 'Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.' From 'Why I Write' published in 1946, an essay published a year before he began writing nineteen eighty-four. The novel is a combined critique of Stalinism, fascism and the totalitarian states created by the two. Orwell was sceptical and often faced attacks for critiquing elements of the left but he by no means abandoned it completely.
Thanks, George! Felt like that was directed to me and none other. At the end of this video I was convinced the fate of humanity rests solely on my shoulders. Quite a lot of weight but for George Orwell I'll do whatever it takes. Well, I mean if anyone wants to help out that would be totally cool too, but, y'know, whatever.

Absolutely agree......Orwell being incredibly sick and on a remote Scottish Island completely detached from society apart from a radio, has given the book a gloomy downtrodden texture....ahh Scottish winter!
I think what Orwell was getting at, especially when he mentioned how his book was a "parody", is that he got caught up in a lot of the spirit-of-the-moment ideas that he kind of shoe-horned into 1984 when it was such a profound statement about the nature of power and control. He definitely made it less of a fundamental statement about the nature of things by pointing fingers at specific ideologies and situations when it seems that all human systems really converge towards the same point of centralization of power and survival of the fittest.
"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past." How true George, that is just what the BBC is doing with British history.
Wow creepy because its true and this was almost 70 years ago. If he were alive today he would just basically have said I told you so. I love how people go straight to nostradamus when predicting world events (which I have been skeptical of btw) when clearly here Orwell speaks the truth.
True Orwell does tell the truth...perhaps you missed a certain holy book from the 15th century which predicts this too...and don't forget the hadiths. In the 14th century...it was predicted that people would be wearing devices on their heads listening to music (headphones) like zombies and would have a device on their thigh (in their pockets) which would allow them to stay in contact with those at home (mobile phones). There was also A Handmaid's Tale. These dystopian novels are what is coming because people have blindly allowed themselves to be brainwashed and controlled by the masses.
“The Spanish war and other events in 1936-37 turned the scale and thereafter I knew where I stood. Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it.” (1946)
@@definitelynotcrazyrei3890 I find it lovely how people who seem to think Orwell is talking about the left when it comes to a tyrannical government and quote him every chance they get, but are still clueless about the fact that he's a staunch, freedom-loving socialist. I'm not surprised though considering the fact that they think the establishment Democrats (capitalists in every sense except in name) are communists.
To everyone saying "he was really talking about X": You're all correct. His allegories could apply to any authority of any kind granted it has sufficient power over information. The political ideology of Ingsoc is pretty vague and conflicted for a reason; its example could apply to a great many powers if any of them became strong enough.
It really is, tracking apps, censorship of the internet because of free thinking people challenging the government narrative, social distancing, possible mandatory vaccinations and health passports. We’re definitely heading towards an Orwellian future if we’re not careful.
I'm gonna be real here: We may not have failed just yet. Yeah, some things are getting worse, but good things are also happening. But when he said "It's up to you" , I thought to myself "What am I supposed to do? I'm lazy, unmotivated and dumb." But then I realised those traits are my fault. I spend most of my summer days wasting time in front of a screen of some sorts without doing anything substantial. To quote someone else: "The greatest enemy we face today is not the government, it's our own indifference. The battle against our own Egos has never been more widespread."
Yeah the rule of three used on the slogan was a huge red flag. Everyone else just want along with it, and I was like, wait, what? I thought I was crazy, but hearing Orwell speak just makes me think even more The novel was amazing and now I'm.trapped in it.
The fooking con virus was the catalyst for our freedoms being slowly eradicated. Laws are being passed by governments everywhere stopping our free movement and we dont blink an eye. A so called vaccine will be introduced to imo cull the worlds population. Oh and you will get one along with a vaccine number or you wont leave your house. I'm afraid we are doomed. Happy xmas.
I feel like I am watching an old fashioned; meaningful film...the articulate voices, the settings...like a 'foyles war,' type atmosphere to it, as an example.
@TheChosenSquirrel There has to be inequality so long as people work. Most people don't work for the good of their fellow human, rather for the good of themselves. Humans are selfish by nature, and if you pay everyone or give everyone the same standard of living they would have no motivation to work. Only when you take humans out of the workforce and out of the ruling class will we have true equality between humans. (Most likely by machines)
I’ve watched this over and over again thinking “you know what the guy who plays Hugh from the Thick of It could do a biopic of George Orwell” and now I’ve realised it’s actually him
Well, as Ozzy Osbourne would say after watching this, "I've seen the future and left it behind". We have arrived and what we have now is a cross between 1984, Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451, --maybe not exactly as they predicted but also as Ozzy would note, "It's close enough for Rock 'n' Roll" and speaking of which I'm going to go to the store to buy what's left and enjoy the last of my freedom of being "poor" so please keep on rockin' while you still can. Peace.
Fahrenheit 451 hasn't happened yet, but if this Blue Wave continues, I expect the Carnegie Library and Library of Congress are at the top of their list.
To quote Terence Mckenna in one of his talk's "If we continue as we have then we're doomed, and the judgement of some higher power will be that they didn't even struggle." So we must fight on to stop this nightmare from being fully realised.
Orwell was spot on, especially when it comes to truth. This is an actor portraying Orwell, yet nearly every comment takes the video as a real recording of Orwell (there is no known video recording of Orwell, limited audio). But the masses are so unaware, they believe this is real. The future is scary, that’s certain.
Ikr, these comments are just further proof of what he was trying to warn about in ‘1984’... if you erase the truth and repeat the lie then eventually the lie becomes the truth.
I have a theory that he may have been a Free Mason of high degree who was privy to their plans for world domination and destruction of Religion but changed his mind when he found out he was dying
For every Libertarian or Conservative watching this, I would like to let you know that he is not one of you. He was a Democratic Socialist, and had been since his involvement in the Spanish Civil War if I recall. So I suggest actually reading the numerous of essays he had written on the subject, instead of assuming he was a conservative just because he preached about Freedom from authoritarian governments.
Nonsense. You're basing that from the Foreword of the Plume (Penguin Books) edition by Thomas Pynchon which has been rigorously discredited as mere hyperbole from scholars. George Orwell had no known political affiliation. Furthermore, his book warned us in part, the blind allegiance people tend to garner in support of a manipulative statist government.
+Mike Shearman thinkprogress.org/yglesias/2010/03/01/196347/george-orwell-was-a-socialist/ I suggest you read this and on a side note, he wrote for The Tribune, a Socialist newspaper that Christopher Hitchens would also write for. So before you start typing away about things you don't know, I suggest you do some fucking research.
+Suzanne Ironic that I reference an actual book; you on the other hand reference something you pulled from the internet. Funny how people with no knowledge or critical thinking skills always resort to vulgar comments when their argument is lost. Peace.
1984 was a warning about totalitarian regimes. It is an extreme example and description of regimes like the Soviet Union at the time he wrote the book. It describes a world close to the reality of what a country like China is today, as their system is largely based on what was the Soviet Union.
I don't think that this is just for china right now. The law change in response to covid 19 is draconian. The use of slogans adopting the rule of three is also endemic of the dystopian novel. This book was written for england. The party is engsoc. It was not set in the east. Orwell's really name was Eric Arthur Blair. He worked for the BBC world service in the novel Winston smith worked for the media too. This book predicted how interactive TVs were to become. As genius as Orwell was he wasn't a fortune teller. He wrote the book for the united kingdom. He was just 36 years off.
@@Miguel-ly4bm yes I've read it twice. I re-read it the other day after first picking it up in 2012. I think Orwell was a wonderful writer. His ideas were applicable to the east back then and the formulation of fascist dictatorships he could see around him at the time of writing. Because he utilised futuristic media in his writing, those of us who read it years later can identify with the techniques for control that he pointed out, and can even see it occurring in the west. For example always being at war. This could be him describing the cold war which emerged out of ww2 (which itself coup be argued to be an extension of the first one). We have this today with the west invading the middle east. It's been ongoing since the early 2000's. Which parts of he book did you find interesting?

The evil people that run the world use fear, propaganda, and staged public hoaxes to terrify people into giving up their rights and giving these monsters more control over us. These evil people want absolute total control or sovereignty over all nations and all people. They want all of humanity under their thumb. We are headed into a one world order where the few will control all; even more than they already do. The only way to stop this, is we the people can't willingly hand over our basic human rights (i.e. the right to privacy). That is what George Orwell was warning us about. Unfortunately, a lot of people have been asleep for far too long. More people are waking up to what's really happening, but I believe it's too little too late. The new world order is knocking at our door. Everything we see on the news or television is not real. They even use TV shows and movies to hide their agenda in plain sight, under the guise of entertainment. It’s actual mind control or conditioning/programming. Look at this clip from a 1968 News Benders episode. The man brags about the fact that a secret agency had been "creating" news stories and filming "models" or crisis actors for their fake news/propaganda for ten years. The world is a stage and we all play a role. We are all players in a very twisted and dark game. ruclips.net/video/egvBmRGt_lc/видео.html
@@Localstar30 That’s a good question. I’ve been trying to figure that out myself. I do like what you said, we can’t worry and fear since that will only make matters worse. They want us to fear. The reason why they love putting out news stories filled with chaos and death is because it causes us to internalize those sad stories (subconsciously) and we in turn, operate at a low vibration frequency. It makes us fear and panic so that we are then more likely to obey the evil people when they take away our rights in order to “protect us”. In the news world they have this saying, “If it bleeds, it leads”. Meaning, sad stories about death and destruction sells and it also affects us on a subconscious level. But, have faith, my friend. I've read that birth control pills kill a woman's libido. Perhaps the elites/establishment/government did that on purpose.
It has that effect on some women, not all. And pregnancy does the same, not to mention the exhaustion of raising a small child. So no, I think not. But happily, there are other methods besides the pill, if it does not agree with a particular woman.
Be careful. She may be getting it from somewhere else.

What better time to revisit this man’s work? BRAVO
A true prophet. A man with remarkable skills and empathy. Such an authority is needed now more than ever.

Cause let's face it, everybody lies. Yes our government does shitty things. But if you really think that our government can really compare to past totalitarian governments, then I think it's safe to say you're a conspiracy nut. Sure it's nice that you don't believe everything you're told, but it doesn't make conspiracy theories any less retarded

I wondered if he shouldn't have included 'anger'; there is so much anger in America, name calling, put downs to any thought different from the centred, and this is especially true of Republicans and Democrats in their hate language.

Peace and blessings be upon you Mr Orwell .. From 2020, We have finally arrived
He's turning in his grave considering the state of this world. A genius ahead of his time. Wish people actually headed his warning for it is real, and quite frightening.
That's good acting for you. Just keep in mind that's Chris Langham, not George Orwell.

fever dreams and such.
George Orwell turned out to be one of the great men in history, like a modern day Nostradamus

Inequality was the price of civilization.
Inequality is civilization.

I love him, he was a genius

Orwell was spot on, especially when it comes to truth. This is an actor portraying Orwell, yet nearly every comment takes the video as a real recording of Orwell (there is no known video recording of Orwell, limited audio). But the masses are so unaware, they believe this is real. The future is scary, that’s certain.
Ikr, these comments are just further proof of what he was trying to warn about in ‘1984’... if you erase the truth and repeat the lie then eventually the lie becomes the truth.

Nonsense. You're basing that from the Foreword of the Plume (Penguin Books) edition by Thomas Pynchon which has been rigorously discredited as mere hyperbole from scholars. 1984 was a warning about totalitarian regimes. It is an extreme example and description of regimes like the Soviet Union at the time he wrote the book. It describes a world close to the reality of what a country like China is today, as their system is largely based on what was the Soviet Union.

The law change in response to covid 19 is draconian. The use of slogans adopting the rule of three is also endemic of the dystopian novel.

They’re actors, it’s a dramatisation.
So is the whole meaning of this is just not choosing to be evil like alot if people do ? Can someone explain this to me im overthinking this
The evil people that run the world use fear, propaganda, and staged public hoaxes to terrify people into giving up their rights and giving these monsters more control over us.
@@blazinga1200 how can we survive and still enjoy life without living in fear and worry ?
