If you google Lobster or crayfish snare, you'll generally find a scaled down version of these a lot better/faster/easier, but this guy has done a great video and much thanks to him.
@@Fishingreminder When I was a kid we used to use a dowel of rod about a metre long with a long nail in it and your method is MUCH better, but I saw the crayfish style one a while ago [ for crayfish ] and I thought a simpler one for small crabs would be great, same gauge wire, just skinny rod. Very effective and I never would have thought of doing that if I had not seen your video, so MUCH thanks friend. There id a vid on the ifish channel of drone fishing - check it out, I'll get the link for you and they don't use a sinker, see what you think and enjoy. ruclips.net/video/fa4HL6ahPGA/видео.html This one is new to me, I'll look at it now. ruclips.net/video/_aVYJXe8Rnc/видео.html
I just saw the one on snapper - really good. POINT:- These guys are using super expensive CASING reels, but droning is not casting. Just a decent sized game reel [ secondhand ] that will hold 500M of 30 to 50 lb line [ braid or mono ] would be fine, stick it on a 7.5' rod [ land based game set up ] and save a lot on equipment. Remember, casting equipment is not needed, your not casting and if you can see birds or the sea state is calm enough, you don't need a sinker, there is sufficient weight in the steel hooks and bait, it all sinks really fast. The shorter the rod, the less advantage the fish has over you - leverage. When guys are fighting a fish with a 12' rod, the fish has 10'/10.5' leverage and the angler only has 1.5'/2' leverage. I'd consider a 5'/7.5'rod and have my sand spike 6'long, pocking 4' above ground. The secondhand market is a beautiful thing, LOL. I'm just north of Sydney Oz and facebook marketplace is amazzzzzzin' especially for furniture, but also fishing etc, everything.
In Hawaii we catch them at night with a bright Headlight and during the day we use a V shaped wire with mono running between the V n snare them when their eyes closed on to the mono but I will give this a try more guaranteed from not losing the crab much mahalo from Maui.
Great video my friend I have never tried cray fish and I really want to try crab too. I always see them when I am rock fishing. Your snare is a very good idea with old rod. Thanks for this tutorial. Big thumbs up 👍
Thank you. You can find this particular type of rock crabs almost everywhere in the North Island of New Zealand. I haven't really looked for them on the South Island. There might be a different type of crabs in the colder climates.
Yeah, it sometimes happens, but rarely - only if they are somewhat stuck in between the rocks. They are pretty aggressive so they don't seem to detach themselves to escape.
Hi, I think it's best to travel as far away from Auckland as possible for rock crabs 😀. And for paddle crabs you need to find a very shallow sandy beach with a large intertidal zone. Perhaps some of the west coast beaches could be worth a try. Best in summer though.
Yeah could work with mono as well. You might loose a few crabs and have to replace it more often. Stronger mono is quite thick in diameter so it won't pull as tight as thin wire leader. But give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Nice, I have heard of the Hawaiian method. Would be interesting to hear if it's easier to catch them with the snare.

thanks bro, glad you enjoyed the video. Give the old crab snare a go - it's actually very addictive, LOL and crabs taste just as good as cray
Haha went ahead and checked out this video too! Love it. I shall try this snare one day!!
Cheers :) Yeah really good fun to catch those little buggers and very tasty too :)
Nice video! Do you know where you went to catch these rock crabs in this video? If so, could you tell me? If not, it's ok.

that app u created is so helpful thx
Pretty bloody cool man! Tasty too
cheers mate, yeah perfect starter for a nice seafood platter 😋
Crab is beautiful meat my favorite! I've eaten massive crab in Canada and it's soooo good.
Yeah I agree, I like it better than crayfish/lobster
Super cool!
cheers :)
Does this method work off Washington state coast?
I would think so, a crab is a crab :)
but you might have to check local regulations, if you are allowed to catch crabs with a snare
Love 🦀 to eat! The best seafood foraging 😍
It really is!
Very useful video, Thanks very much
Thanks for the feedback 👍
@@Fishingreminder No worries, Mate
Do you ever get them detatching their claws or legs to escape?
Yeah, it sometimes happens, but rarely - only if they are somewhat stuck in between the rocks. They are pretty aggressive so they don't seem to detach themselves to escape.
Hey mate love the vid we should go fishing off the wharf one day
Cheers bro, thanks for the feedback. Wharf fishing sound great. Where are you based?
Very good thank you very much

Thank you for the lessons I really need to know this but I’m a woman I’m sure if I can tie a loop
Cheers, You can do it!
Hey, what place in Auckland would you recommend for either paddle crabs or rock crabs. :)

Welcome
these look like purple rock crabs? arent they supposed to be poisonous or something?
I don't think they are poisonous. They must be edible otherwise I'd be dead by now, LOL
nice! really good video
Thank you very much!
which rock crabs are poisonous?
not sure
caught one by hand.... feisty little fellers
Haha, careful with your fingers, it can be very painful when they pinch you :)
I’ve made them before and I’m remaking them because they are too good for crabbing.
awesome 👍
couldnt you just make this with mono or will the crabs cut through it?
Yeah could work with mono as well. You might loose a few crabs and have to replace it more often. Stronger mono is quite thick in diameter so it won't pull as tight as thin wire leader. But give it a try and let us know how you get on.
i always see those crabs but they move so fast on the rocks!
haha, yeah you gotta sneak up on them. They also make great bait for surfcasting.
What country is this in ?
in New Zealand, but you can find rock crabs all over the world
@@Fishingreminder oh cool I live in Auckland, I always see these but for some reason I thought they weren't edible, might have to give them a try
I dunno 🤔Something about using snares
Only 42 likes for a good vid
Thanks man, yeah channel is still growing, aye.
