At times a hot plate is called an electric cooking coil: IT IS BASICALLY A RESISTANCE WIRE AND A THERMOSTAT and that's all you need to know to fix it.

I am trying to learn the parts of the simple hot plate, because the hot plate on my coffee maker has stopped working. It electronically turns on and off, and a light indicates when it is on. Now, it indicates that it it is on, when it is not. I am trying discover the cause.

Which brand and model number is your coffee maker?
For now if it shows light indicating that it is on then I will suspect the thermal fuse or heating element depending on the age of the device.

It is a Keurig Duo, about four years old. I opened the bottom to look at the hot plate assembly, loosened a few screws to examine parts numbers, reassembled it, and it began to work. It immediately went lukewarm, though, and stopped working again.
