Mississippi has always been my favourite (if it is possible to have a favourite Bob Dylan song). It uplifts and strengthens the heart, whilst softening and humbling it at the same time. No matter my mood, grabs the attention like no other song and lyrics. Like the best woman when she walks into a room, and all of a sudden, everything else becomes irrelevant. This song is riddled with love and strength; a constant in my life. His ballads are excellent, Workingman's Blues #2 is another - thank you R.Z. Many of his songs are about movement and changes, and yet at the heart of it all is the most steadfast man, and this makes me find strength and reconnect with myself - dig deep and be forgiving and accepting of nature and nature of others. The importance and weight of his compositions far outweigh the majority of even good songs. I don't usually like it when people compare artists and songs, but its hard not to with Bob Dylan. He is the best. Great man and gentleman.
What a monster. He's so unique he makes any band sound like Hendrix for their ability to follow him. I've seen him twice live and he keeps getting better as he gets older. You can't say that about many artists his age...
I have listened to this tune so many times, but like most of Dylan's songs I hear something that I didn't hear or feel before...The master storyteller. 👏☝️🎶😎
"Some people will offer you their hand and some won’t Last night I knew you, tonight I don’t I need somethin’ strong to distract my mind I’m gonna look at you ’til my eyes go blind" It is UNBELIEVABLE that this masterpiece has only 74,938 views!
In a catalogue replete with greatness, this song stands out as one of his greatest. Defines the term "Dylan-esque" in its lyrical power and the way it swerves from complete pessimism to resignation and even optimism. Proof that there was, is and will always be only one Bob.
Watching him from the beginning can only appreciate his revisited neverending works. How that voice evolved, higher power knows. It gets more powerful and sexy every time he sings .it's always a intimate encounter with telent.
' Only one thing I did wrong I stayed in Mississippi one day too long...' that's great, really the answer to all questions..Mr Dylan is not to top...I love that song..because if you think about your own life you don"t know at which point it doesen't go as you planned it.. you make plans and life gets in the way
For me this a favorite , as well as Every Grain of Sand , Red River Girl , Not Dark Yet and only about 500 more songs. But who's counting? There is no one else a better songwriter than Bob Dylan . If only the world would realize this . Maybe , just maybe , the power hunger mongrels would stop in mid step from their Hellbent ideas that only lead to mass destruction . For me and my Christian Faith I believe Bob Dylan is a man of the Ages . Peter behind my Judy .
18 years today since bobby released love and theft 18 years since the 11th of September 2001 that is. "sky full of fire pain pouring down". A tragic day indeed for all of mankind, a new chapter to the modern world.
My clothes are wet, tight on my skin ... OMB this is one of his HOTTEST songs . LOVE this live version thanks great posting! Mules kicking in his stall baby!
He was , what, about 62 when he recorded this? I'm turning 65 on 12/01/12, and I feel like this cat is speaking about so much of the s**t (good and bad) that I've gone through over the years. This is all the richer for all the experiences I've had. World weary, "split to splinters," but still a light and free heart" and hope for the future. Fabulous lines, one after another after another........... This song is one fabulous "chronicle" in itself.
anyone remember the day this album was released? in the us anyways it was tuesday sept 11 2001. I went out and got the album and WTC was on tv. and hear the lyrics in this song? am I the only one that picked up on this?
+Dan C no you're not the only one but it's good of you to make the observation here. I, too, bought this on 9-11 and no matter when the song was written I couldn't ignore such lines as "Sky full of fire/pain pourin' down"
Anyone notice that BobbyD is quite the maestro on that YellowStrat~when we saw him in Chicago that year I was shocked&happy to see him taking instrumentals b/c these are his songs/his mind/his interpretation/interpolation of his music. Very psychedelicized&beautiful blues, as ever. The line: "I Need Something Strong To Distract My Mind" is so amazing for those of us w/PTSD
"I Need Something Strong To Distract My Mind" = GorillaGlue#4 cannabis for US Check some of BobbyD's instrumentals on this tour on tune like "Lovesick"
There is a MUCH better video of this World Premier performance of this song (9 Oct 2001 in Medford, OR) posted by hollis1960, Movie 79. It is not a 2002 performance, it is the first time he ever performed it, date given earlier.
Well if Tempest is anything to go by then hes keeping his current voice, but you're right about him being able to sing in other voices. Check out his performance of Do Re Mi on the history channel where he sings in the same voice as the White House performance, wish he'd do it regularly
There's no predicting Bob, personally however I think out of his most recent albums Love and Theft was best so something more along those lines would be good however he seems to be always trying new directions so who knows
We're showing just how Dylan crazy we are right here, but I totally agree. It's lost that deep gravel sound but now it's just a sort of growl. BUT f you compare his never-ending-tour performances and the White House performance from 2009, there's a HUGE difference. His voice is softer and fuller and more melodic than usual. Who knows, maybe he's got another "voice" in him. He's used so many! Guess we'll find out on the next album.
Give the dude a break, he is pushing 70, In my humble opinion he is first and foremost a poet, he is then a folk musician, he is then a singer. Put bluntly Bob can't sing... pitch perfect... but NOBODY can sing his stuff anywhere close to his versions. If you don't like it then go listen to some Sony music controlled garbage they are pumping out these days, no apprenticeship, no originality, no soul, so nothing that stirs the emotions. Still think PGABTK is is greatest work.
Wow. That's a significant difference. Why the hell would he sing any other way? Since you're a fellow Dylan-phile, what do you hope for in the next album? I really hope he goes with Danny Lanois as a producer to get a better sound than was on tempest OR just sticks with minimal instrumentation. Honestly, I'd just prefer a full-on acoustic album. Sorta like World Gone Wrong, but to record his own songs that have never been done acoustically. It's just wishful thinking, but I'd love it.

People can argue about what Dylan's 'best' song is, but you identified his two most significant songs.
What a monster. He's so unique he makes any band sound like Hendrix for their ability to follow him. I've seen him twice live and he keeps getting better as he gets older. You can't say that about many artists his age...
"You can always come back, but you can't come back all the way". Love it!!
This is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the Internet. Masterpiece is right.
Larry Campbell's slide guitar work is awesome.
he's still fantastic, great admiration, maestro, you're number one!
So disapointing the studio versions aren't uploaded! Love & Theft is one of the greatest albums of all time and it's sad we can't all discuss it.
I have listened to this tune so many times, but like most of Dylan's songs I hear something that I didn't hear or feel before...The master storyteller. 👏☝️🎶😎
He performs it just as good now. He still looks gorgeous, stands up at the grand piano and rocks the house.
"Some people will offer you their hand and some won’t

"Sometimes no - one wants what you got, sometimes you can't give it away".
Hi there hope you're doing well.
mizarrazim most people think poetry is boring..
Plus another 110,000 and counting.............
Viewed by everyone who was every in Mississippi, so it’s actually a lot! (207K)

Perfectly put, NevadaBoss ...Mississippi up there as true scintillating greatness
Brilliant! Thank you for posting this amazing song.

Evolving with a performer takes an appreciation for those of all ages & all their changes. It's the words man

'Mississippi' strikes all the right notes for me. Tremendous feeling for a place.
One of the greatest artists that ever lived. No doubt about it! :)
I love this song as much as his other best songs.
Say anything you wanna, I've heard it all.
So many things that we never will undo. I know you're sorry, I'm sorry too.

Bob is the most interesting artist beoing on stage. The only one who never play and sing a song the same way. That's why I'm always happy to see him.
Not exactly the same. He likes to make musical changes for many of his live performances. :-)
18 years today since bobby released love and theft 18 years since the 11th of September 2001 that is. "sky full of fire pain pouring down". A tragic day indeed for all of mankind, a new chapter to the modern world.
See it for what it was. A created set up event
Love Mississippi
My clothes are wet, tight on my skin ... OMB this is one of his HOTTEST songs .
LOVE this live version thanks great posting!
Mules kicking in his stall baby!
Awesome, love his look here and everything about this version of one of my all time faves. Thanks for the posting.

A wonderful rendition of a wonderful song! :)
got to see him live back in 79...wow what a great concert that was ..thx for loading this ..God bless
omfg....i love this
One of my favorite Dylan songs.
My favorite part of this is "I don't even have anything for myself anymore'
Great suit for a wonderful song

His voice from 1997 till about 2003 was perfect for the style he was playing. its a shame he doesn't sing/perform like it anymore
"Walking through the leaves, falling from the trees, feeling like a stranger that nobody sees..."
The live debut for this. Medford, Oregon.
What can I say? As often with Dylan: Masterpiece.
I love that all Dylan has been scrubbed from here except his best song.
great singing
A very "Bob Dylan" performance by Bob Dylan. You can't beat it.
Best Dylan song in about twenty years
Great song love it
i love my fellow dylan fans ❤️
You drive me crazy Bob😎
Gorgeous piece. I shout for it at gigs but he doesn't listen. Pffft….
Really great live version! When I saw him play it, he had mutated it so much I couldn't recognize it. lol

@nordicea Bob's recent version of Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking has been a sort of return to that style and it's killer!
Love and Theft
Masterpiece is right..
I have nothing to add to your comment Houston., except: REALIZE THIS ARTISTRY FOLKS!!!!
Does anyone know which show this was from?
There's no predicting Bob, personally however I think out of his most recent albums Love and Theft was best so something more along those lines would be good however he seems to be always trying new directions so who knows

He should try to just talk it. Could he do that? Sorta like Johnny Cash? "I don't even got any THANG for myself anymore."
Wow. That's a significant difference. Why the hell would he sing any other way?

Sure glad Dylan wrote this so the Dixie Chicks could come along latter to popularize it in their way.
Patricia Swanson quite a brave thing to say, that's what makes this a great country is you can say any dumbass thing you want.

well put Nicholas -
@kiddan86
Bob Dylan is great
Dude, he totally looked at you at 1:50
This guy's singing voice is like Mark Knopfler's but not as good.
He is sooooo more expressive!
+Septimus "This guy" ???? Too funny!
