YouTube’s Ridiculously Awkward Live Show

- RUclips Live was youtube's first livestreamed event from 2008 where people from all corners of the internet gathered to celebrate the platform. The livestream had a handful of different camera angles that you could watch, including backstage and off-stage content, all at once. This came in handy during the really boring parts, because I would just leave the main stage and watch some youtuber goofing around backstage instead. It was messy, it was chaotic, and it was wonderful. Let's check it out.

this takes me back. welcome to youtube is a banger, katy perry was awkward, but i'm just impressed you pulled together all those references to 2008

Hi Jarbis
Man… 2008. What a year. That was the year I was born, died, got married, had 6 children, graduated college AND high school, and discovered the Knights Templar treasure. Good times :’)
No that was 2009
That’s an identity fraud moment
Heyyyy '08! That's the year I graduated too! *"08 Don't Hate"* was our class slogan😅
And the year i moved
Congrats on getting out of the 2008 timeloop btw.
Cup stacking was so huge that we literally had to do it in gym class. This was a buried memory until this video
Bro us too. They tried to break some record by having the most kids doing it at once on this particular day
Dammit I'm getting nostalgia from this
We did it on field day (couldn’t go outside bc it rained) and I won bc I was tall and could stack it high up than the other kids. That’s my claim to fame
I’m an elementary teacher and cup stacking is still a required unit the kids have to learn and practice lol
Same. Sometimes my gym teacher put it in like these obstacle courses we had to do every once in awhile
It's an honor to have my reupload featured. You're the man, BTW!
Nice
Legend. I see you
Cheese...cat?
Thank you for bringing it back. 🙏
You’re a legend man
My favorite part of Bo's performance was right after Katy Perry awkwardly tried flirting with a teenager( Bo) his first words were Thank you MRS Perry. Absolute roast. Bo was and is the best. 2008 YT was so interesting... Daxflame, Bo Burnham, Smosh, Nigahiga, FRED, Rhett and Link... crazy
Funny story, Bo Burnham performed at my college in 2010 or 2011, and... He's not allowed to come back because he threw a mic stand across the stage and the school got mad. 😂

Props to Lucas for getting himself basically set for life from taking Nickelodeon's money, personally I don't watch his current content and I didn't really watch Fred in the day either but he seems genuinely happy with his life from what I've seen of him currently and I can't put him down for that
Firstly, Komi-san supremacy.
Secondly, I never liked Fred as a young person but I do enjoy watching Lucas now, and yeah he's doing well from what I see!
His content now is honestly super funny, I love it!
Never watched Fred (I’m 30 lol) but Lucas is lovely, I definitely recommend checking out his channel these days tbh
I watched back in the Fred days, and still do now. I think there was a few years I forgot about him when I was busy with school and life, but one day I was like "oh yeah, how's he doing?" And started watching again lol
I never liked Fred but I love watching Lucas!
I forgot how big a deal the whole cup stacking thing was until this moment. Like everyone was so into it. And then it bled so smoothly into that stupid cup song that every girl learned like, overnight I guess.
I still don’t know how to do it :’)
@@lucifernazaedi me neither honestly. It felt like everyone just suddenly knew how to do it and so I was like "why bother trying to learn now?"
When I was in elementary school we had a whole segment in p.e. focused on cup stacking...
I had a friend in middle school who came in 2nd place at our state championship for cup stacking! Apparently it’s very popular amongst Asian countries (my friend is Japanese and said about 3/4 of the competitors were Asian). She’s still crazy good at it.
i remember speed stacking cups took up an entire 6 weeks of PE class when i was a kid. crazy times
It's almost disturbing just how vast the gap between every performance is to Bo Burnham's.
Dude was the only person there who seemed to understand exactly where he was and where the platform was going.
“You might not be my cheese cat, but you are my hero” so touching
@@notyourcheesecat OH MY GOODNESS
Gotta love that after Katie Perry sexualised Bo Burnham, he immediately answered by reminding her that she was married. «Thanks Mrs. Perry» lol
And 8 years later he performed kill yourself in Make Happy.
i mean she was reading from a pre written script lol. she didn't sexualize him whoever wrote that intro did. unless you guys honestly think Katy Perry writes her own segways at awards shows
@@inyrui She was big enough already that she likely could've just said "no, change it".
I don’t think she was married in 2008 though. I took Bo’s response to be reminding her that he was still just a kid (he was 18 at the time and she was 24)
@@Fay7666 i think she didn't care enough to want to change it
Bo Burnham did not give a shit and it’s hilarious
Losing it at Bo sitting like a gargoyle in the middle of the show
Why is he sitting like that 😭
Because he hates everyone and everything there
“A whole damn group of ukes?!?! Something about that is just unsettling.”
Oh if you think that small group is unsettling, I have your nightmare scenario. Two weekends ago I went to a nearby ukulele carnival and strummed along with around 100 other ukulele players. I really enjoyed it, but I could see how that’s a bit much.
reminds me of the nearby ukulele fest that just happened near me lmao (possibly the same one, or maybe uke fests are just more popular than i realized)
My mum was involved in an attempted world record break. Picture a whole stadium of ukulele players

People forget that before he got big for doing VFX videos on youtube with FreddieW/RocketJump he was renown for his Guitar Hero capabilities. IIRC he won some national Guitar Hero competitions.

bo burnham's character development makes sense, like the progression of 2008 bo to 2021 bo make you go like, yeah that's about right
You know, Adam has said that he and Jamie never really got along and Jamie wasn’t all that comfortable performing, and you can tell
"Good thing there's no censorship on youtube" ... meme of the century
YT events where they mash genres together reminds me of when teachers would force you to hang out w/ other kids because "everyone needs to get along" but it just ends up being awkward, boring, and cringey because nobody likes the same thing

This makes me think how crazy it is that Bo Burnham, Issa Rae, and Justin Bieber became so popular that they basically transcended RUclips. I mean, they got their starts here, but they're hardly associated with the website anymore.
man you don't get a lot of people talking about this era nowadays. it's hard to find people to share the nostalgia with, i feel alone. thank you for the video
The ukulele bit really aged well, watching this post colleen
Oh, wow, those bits with bo burnham really show how jaded he already was. I’m surprised that this event wasn’t brought up in CJ’s video, but it’s true - he really was patient zero, and he already knew it by the time he was 18.
I assume with Cj’s research, either he saw this and then was able to put it in with other moments where bo burnham seemed super jaded OR this is so fucking hard to find that not even Cj saw it, which means it was truly hidden because Cj does so much intense research. we should tweet this at him this seems like something he would lose his mind at honestly. Like mentioned in the video, its probably only that clip of his song that was commonly found and not the whole live show
@@Babyteef yeah seriously, the digging in that video alone was just bonkers - I wouldn't be shocked if it just didn't make the cut for the video tbh, it was so long. I don't use Twitter or anything like that but it def seems like something cj would be super interested to see
I remember watching his song he did and thought he was joking when he said thank you Ms Perry not that he was just not having it
Patient zero...for what? Jaded depression? Cause that's been around for a bit longer than that lol. Sorry if I'm missing your meaning, but a little context might help
@@randomwowjunkie a youtube essayist (CJtheX) made a long-ass video discussing bo burnham, specifically the Jeff Bezos song from inside, and in that video CJ went through every single piece of Bo's comedy that he could find, and one huge part of the video was that Bo was really one of the first viral RUclips sensations to end up with a massive audience, and specifically said he was "patient zero" for the world we live in now where every single thing we do online is a performance etc. It's an incredible video and I highly recommend watching it

“you may not be my cheese cat, but you are my hero” is a phrase i desperately want to use on a daily basis
I'm gonna have to make a Tshirt. And keep it for myself.
No joke. I just heard "Welcome to RUclips" for the first time this past week because I was on Bo Burnham's Spotify listening to "Welcome to the Internet" for the five billionth time and stumbled across it. I could tell it was dated. I'm 22 so I am old enough to remember certain things about 2008. I remember Fred(Lucas Cruikshank) and Nigahiga's videos so fondly but my access to the internet was spotty at best. I didn't always have it so that's probably why I missed out on things like RUclips Live. I would have been all over that shit if I had known about it as a 9 year old. 😂
Did anyone else notice Rhett and Link in the crowd at 9:48? So weird seeing them in the audience of something like this knowing how massive they are now!
they've always been massive! haha
Rhett and Link are OG RUclipsrs. Their T-Shirt Wars and Chuck Tesla dominated early internet.
@@TheProofLady yeah but T Shirt Wars and Chuck Testa were 10/11 years ago. In 2008 they’d only just done Online Nation so I don’t think they were “dominating” yet
That’s so wild! I never would have noticed! Thanks for pointing it out! They’re super awesome and it’s wild to see them hete
Oh yeah at 7:54 I see them!
I didn’t know RUclips Live was a thing! Despite that, I was 100% the demographic that they were going for. I recognized every featured creator, and the nostalgia hit like a ton of bricks.
RUclips Live today would be so hard to do, because, as you said, even millions of followers nowadays doesn’t mean nearly as much. The “most followed” RUclipsrs aren’t even on my radar, and I’m sure that’s true for a lot of other viewers.
Thanks for covering this! The Wild West of RUclips is always fun to look back on.
Like RUclips rewind. I’m lucky if I know 20 faces featured and I only watch or have watched like 5 😅

I think the reason ‘The Mythbusters’ act was kind of mid, was that it was originally designed as an exemplar tool for showing graphical power differences between a CPU and a GPU for Nvidia when ‘The Mythbusters’ hosted one of their Cons. They showed a single paintball gun on an articulating arm draw a smiley face and then used the big machine to make a rough image of the mona Lisa by sticking different colored paintballs in the various barrels and shooting them out at once. This showed the graphical advantage of Nvidia’s multiple Cuda cores vs the much less powerful CPU graphics. I think that video is still up on YT somewhere.

Additionally: The memory that is cup stacking was one I completely forgot about, but oh boy was I obsessed with cup stacking. I tried to learn how to be good at stacking cups, but I literally have no coordination.

Holy shit, that's so accurate. And Miley is his Ethan.
At the time his channel was modeled off of Perez Hilton and TMZ-esque celebrity gossip blogs. Eventually as RUclips got bigger and youtubers more famous, these style of channels evolved into the drama channels like Keemstar where they talk about more RUclips centric gossip and drama.

6:45 "Ukes" feels like a derogatory term against ukulele players and i cant wait to use it
17:17 In defense of the cup-stacking bit of the show, cup-stacking was HUGE on youtube in 2008. A massive community of people trying to beat each other’s records. It makes waaaaay more sense for the sports segment to be about cup-stacking than something like soccer/football because the cup-stacking community found a unique place on youtube whereas (like you said) soccer/football was something already universal that appealed to a wide international audience. I know this vid is 2 years old now, but to anyone reading this now, I highly recommend Jordy McNeill’s cup-stacking video! She goes over a bit of history as well as her own experiences in that youtube niche :)
Every time Scott reveals his camera set up, I’m reminded that’s all I am to him and I appreciate his humor and stage presence so much more for it
Matt Sloan of the Chad Vader Star Wars series has actually voiced Darth Vader in many of the Lego Star Wars shows/games… so Disney couldn’t have been too mad haha. What a wild ride back to 2008 this was though.

Early RUclips was great, had a much stronger community. Back when most "big’ RUclipsrs knew each other a least a bit. Back when you could post video responses directly to a specific video. You had the Vlogbrothers taking over RUclips’s front page yearly (back when RUclips had a real trending system) and most RUclipsrs in support making P4A videos of their favorite charity.
Also in 2009 when Vlogbrothers used its community the Nerdfighters to compete in the DARPA Network Challenge, a challenge with 10 balloons across the US for a chance at $40,000 for charity. I got a call in the morning of the event from Pogobat/Dan Brown (creator of one of the first popular interactive videos Who Wants to be a YouTubBllionaire), he asked me to search around Houston since a balloon had been rumored to be there. Was a ton of fun searching for it that day. We lost to MIT but we put up a good fight.
I could go on and on about little nuggets of early RUclips history, it had an Impact on me too.

@@vurpo7080 Not true at all. Production value was just different back in the day and part of the charm of RUclips was it was a launching pad to success where you could express yourself however you wanted. Lots of us were just using windows movie maker or just recording off webcams. Some knew about editing and some of us didn't. It was vlogging, showing off skills and tricks, making montages, making MVs and lip syncing. They were like online home videos for the public.
