    I think the thing that killed Guitar Hero is the terrible song choices, they went to mainstream pop instead of heavy metal/rock etc which was what made Guitar Hero 3 so good

    • @STEEL4122
      @STEEL4122 5 лет назад +72

      ShadowZeal not only that but they tried to add much features to the game which ruined it for me. All they needed to do to survive was keep the SAME GH2 or GH3 engine(I prefer GH2 engine because the hammerons are intended to be harder with a smaller window, GH3 you could spam the orange button in between other hammerons & they still worked or you could press the red button 5x if there was only 1 red hammeron coming, very broken) and just have different classic songs & it everyone would LOVE IT still. They added weird features later on in World Tour & up. It was Guitar Hero NOT Rock Band. If I wanted to play as the whole band I’d play Rock Band smh & I remember they added these weird hammerons that had lines leading to the next & if you messed them up you didn’t have to strum to get the streak going back. I hate that when game company’s do this to great games, Activision did the same crap with Tony Hawk games, add too much crap that fans don’t want, we want the same game but with new content, very simple

      You do realize that if Activision never got involved you would have never had the "masterpiece" refereed to in this video that is GH3. With ATVI and Neversoft involved it made the game great. Neversoft is also owned by ATVI as a sister company. The reason it became "saturated" was the lack of a music store which couldn't be done at the time so whenever they wanted to release new music on PS2 they had to release a physical disc before DLC was a thing for music games.

    • @MJAussie360
      @MJAussie360 6 лет назад +23

      Most of the argument is from 3 onwards, that's when most of the "saturation" was happening. DLC was already well implemented in games at the time so there was never really an excuse. They did it to flog off new games and instruments. Activision is well know for the buchering of franchises, look at Tony Hawk.

    When I talk about the death of guitar hero, I mean as a game, not as a community. I realize that Clone Hero is still super alive and active, but what I am referring to in this video is the Guitar Hero line itself.
    Edit: Also, the part when I showed a video of a guy playing on expert and said it was me when I was little, was sarcasm. That video was from GuitarHeroPhenom, so all credit goes to him. I was actually terrible at the game when I was younger.

    • @keyal8687

      Many former GH3 Modders that made GH3PC for example, are actively helping the developer of clone hero to keep the feel of gameplay that GH3 had, infinite time between Hammer-Ons for example. They also refused to add the hated lanes that RB4 introduced. I love clone hero, ironically the only game not made by professionals is the best one!

    • @mayravixx25
      @mayravixx25 6 лет назад +2

      When I first started, I couldn't even play Slow Ride on easy. now, I can play TTFAF on expert and get 73% without having practiced the song. I thank Clone Hero for that because it allowed me to get some really difficult songs (*cough* Rek3dge charts *cough*) and use them to practice. Guitar Hero 3 is a masterpiece, but I feel like a lot of the songs are either way beyond my skill level or are just too easy on Expert. I have yet to find a happy medium on that without adding custom songs, but I also feel like that's more of my own issue rather than a game issue.

      I remember how heavily criticized Guitar Hero 5 was due to the very mixed track list. I liked all of the new features in Guitar Hero 5, but as a kid I ended up hating it because there was barely any interesting songs in there. So then came Warriors Of Rock, which feels like the game Guitar Hero 5 should've been. It had all of the cool features Guitar Hero 5 had, but this time had a focused song list, which is all heavy metal. I think Neversoft knew that Warriors Of Rock was probably gonna be their last Guitar Hero game, so they put all their care into it and made it their swan song. And what a swan song it was! It was the anti-Guitar Hero 5! Guitar Hero: Warriors Of Rock is super underrated, and my personal second favorite game in the series, right after Guitar Hero 3.

      I was very disappointed in Van Halen; not because of the songs or anything, but because it replaced Michael Anthony (the guy who actually played bass on the songs) with Eddie's kid, "Wolfgang."
      That just rubbed me the wrong way. It's like they were giving credit to someone else for work they didn't do.
      But, I'm guessing Michael Anthony probably didn't want his appearance used in it, so the band went with Plan B. :\
      On the plus side, I think I got the PS2 version of the game for free by pre-ordering "Guitar Hero 5" from Amazon so it's not like it actually cost me anything extra. :)

    • @drawkiain

      Wolfgang was in GHVH because Michael Anthony had officially split from the band at the time the game was released. The fact that he wasn't in the game was a Van Halen problem, not a developer's problem. It's the same reason why there's no Sammy Hagar era VH songs on the game, because he just wasn't part of the band when the game was being made.
      GHVH was good for what they could actually work with. The ideal Van Halen GH game would be impossible to make because of the complicated licensing regarding David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and all the other moving around Van Halen has experienced over the years.
      It's sad but it's the way it had to be.

    I used to be a huge GH player, I played guitar and drums on Expert, but I was never really a 100% FC person. I was just reasonably good. Anyways, I fucking loved to play these games, they were not only fun, but they truly sparked my interest for music, it's probably the main reason why I picked up a real instrument, and I'm a musician today. In fact, I would still play the shit out of those games if I still had my guitar and drums. It never became boring for me. My honest opinion as far as what they should have done, is inserting a MUCH MUCH bigger selection of music. Most of the people who played GH were metalheads, and there could have been hundreds of thousands of more bands, ranging from mainstream, to underground, to all kinds of metal added to the games. This applys also to rock music of course. It's the music library limitation that killed the series. I know this involves a lot of legal work to be done, but... It would be worth it, I'm sure of it. That's my opinion.

      If you haven't heard of it: Check out Clone Hero, it's basicly a guitar hero redo, just the songs and charts get created by people playing the game, there's people out there charting entire albums or even discographies by bands, I currently have over 1650 songs in my game with variaties from all original GH games to meme charts that are just for fun, and everything in between, all in one game and database. I realize I’m responding to a 6month old comment, but Nostalgia is sooo correct. Warriors of Rock is SUCH a badass game. It’s focus is mostly great METAL with a few lighter tracks. But great tracks, an awesome “Quest” and just a powerhouse of a game. Many of the tracks are tough even on Easy! I love the challenge.
      And I, like many others on here am an adult and still play this game. The series I mean, via the Wii.
      Definitely prefer it over Rock Band, but I never obtained an actual “Rock Band” guitar. Not sure if that makes a difference.
      I also just ordered the Green Day game as I realized I never got that one,
      and how cool to get a brand new game filled with 2.5 full albums of a band I really like after all this time w/nothing new!

Sure it was the 'final' game in an over-saturated market and the themes were way over the top, but it had a solid track list, perfected the mechanics for all instruments and like Rock Band, worked as a music platform with tons of DLC and the option to import huge chunks of the track lists of almost every previous GH game. I have spent many many MANY hours just jamming out with random players online with that game. Still have a dusty Wii lying around somewhere with hundreds of GH songs on it!

      And since I loved death metal and trash metal, songs like "Laser Cannon Death Sentence", "Sudden Death", "Holy Wars", "If You Want Peace, Prepare For War" and so on, really had me staying.
      The only thing that always pissed me off, was that "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" never got into any of the newer games.. Like in Greatest Hits, it would've been perfect, instead of something like "Hey You" or "Take It Off".

    The greatest guitar hero moments were hitting that blue with the pinky then sliding up to the orange hammer-on straight after. When Guitar Hero Live came out with the goal of "making the game more accessible", they made a three finger fretting system that essentially destroyed the whole concept of Guitar Hero's creation in the first place - making you feel awesome at guitar... without actually being very awesome at guitar... at all. They wanted you to be fretting up and down those five frets in a way that looked totally awesome and required some linear, visual co-ordination. Although Guitar Hero Live introduced a 2x3 button system to make the guitars more "realistic", they defeated the whole purpose of playing a glorified air-guitar game - you're not actually playing a real guitar, you're just meant to look and feel awesome. If people wanted a realistic guitar game, they would go and buy Rocksmith. If they wanted to just play up and down the neck of a plastic guitar and feel pretty awesome without having to spend tens of years and thousands of dollars learning an actual instrument, they'd play Guitar Hero. There was a clear distinction that they crossed, and this decision ruined their game. The game was always made accessible with a three button easy difficulty, so their reason there for accessibility is poor. If they wanted to make the game more difficult, however, they should have at least kept the 5 fret system to begin with. Adding a second row/column of buttons is a reasonable option, however removing the 4th and 5th frets (thus rendering the pinky useless) removes the ability to feel awesome. Nobody feels awesome playing a guitar with three fingers. You can barely even play proper guitar with three fingers. They took away the experience that the gamer felt. That's where they went wrong.

      Kind of besides the point here, but did anyone else find it easier to play Guitar Hero with the pinky finger on the orange, and instead having to switch the index finger between green and red? How is GH2 worse that GH1? The engine is far better, addressing the broken hammer-ons/pull-offs from the original, the art style is refined from the original and has charm, you could now practice song sections, play coop or even competitive with both players playing the WHOLE song instead of the "ping pong" thing when every player played a little bit of the song before passing to the other, the covers are better, even though recorded by the exactly same people of the original game, the argument of "GH2 is just a reskin of the original" is total BS.

It also opened me up to the world of rock that I adore today, and gave me an appreciation for music. One of my fondest and most memorable memory is watching a couple of my sister's friends play Through the Fire and Flames on Expert. *Expert.* They had to pause the game every few minutes just to shake out their hands. JAC 073 Indeed. If you look at Rock Band, you can see they actually moderated their main releases, with the only time the released more than one title being with the track packs that contained DLC songs so players who were still on PS2 can play them (and players on Xbox 360 and PS3 can play it, and when they were done, they can use a code to get the songs on said track pack downloaded for play on the main Rock Band games). Guitar Hero just kept releasing too many games because Activision looked at the franchise and saw nothing but dollar signs.

    Guitar Hero 1,2 and 3 were so great because of the novelty factor but also because the setlists were genuinely broad and were not afraid to feature lesser known songs.
    The biggest factor I believe killed Guitar Hero was the oversaturation of DLC and games themselves. The first 3 games had legendary setlists that the entire community could keep track of and relate to. After Guitar Hero 3, the games became absolutely littered with DLC tracks. It killed the community because everyone had a different setlist of songs in their game depending on what DLC they had, there was no longer a common setlist that everyone could talk about and relate to. It becomes less interesting if people are talking about difficult bits in songs you don't have for your game.
    The other big thing that killed it was that after GH3, the focus shifted towards more mainstream content in setlist and consequently an absolute dirge of songs that were dull and uninteresting to play through.
    It's the most common disease in gaming and entertainment in general - when something gets big - malignant, cancerous greed from the developers take over. Less is almost always more when something gains traction but game developers have never quite been able to grasp the concept of rejecting short term greed for long term sustained success. It's depressing.

      I wouldn't say the entirety of the gaming market is this way, where they just release games just to make money. That's basically a stereotype perpetually kept alive by the advent of spending more for pre-rendered cutscenes, licenses, advertising, hemorrhaging money out of consumers through deceptive business practices, and all the things that would matter the most in the mass public eye. To us, as people who breathe and live for video games, we actually became sort of video game critics because we do love the products they've offered to us and the memories we've created through those products. It'll be up to us lot to guide the mass public towards better games and not honey traps.

    While the Guitar Hero games are practically dead, the community that was created by it, is relatively still alive and well. One thing I feel like you missed (and may have been important) was the PC Edition of Guitar Hero 3 which was one of two games only made for PC (the other one being Guitar Hero Aerosmith). The community made by Guitar Hero, heavily modded the PC Edition of the game to incorporate custom community made charts/songs which helped keep the community somewhat alive. As of now, the community is growing again at a steady rate because of a free community made clone of the game named "Clone Hero" which is basically the same as Guitar Hero PC Edition but made more for the community. While the games are dead, the community is steadily thriving and growing.
    Guitar Hero was an amazing game many of us won't forget. Too bad it was over saturated to the point of downfall... If only they never did so. Imagine what would things be like today.

    All these analyses of the death of Guitar Hero and rhythm games leaves out probably the most important thing that stopped many faithful fans from continuing, and that's HDTVs. Guitar Hero debuted when CRTs were still very common, and hooking up your console to one of these was easy. Playing rhythm games on a CRT is extremely gratifying because there is basically no display lag at all, as there is no image processing going on in the background. After the Guitar Hero 3 era is when me and most of my friends upgraded to HDTVs, and we really felt the lag. Add onto that the wireless controllers being inconsistent and the calibration settings being basically useless and you get a most unfun experience trying to play rhythm games. It got to a point where being good at the game wasn't enough to actually hit the notes, you had to do all kinds of math in your head to calculate exactly when to hit the notes, because it wasn't in time with the music. We all dropped it shortly after. I still return to it every now and then, but it's honestly just impossible to enjoy rhythm games on modern TVs. Right now, the best situation for playing rhythm games is either mobile or Switch handheld, and neither are ideal for interesting peripherals like guitar, drums, keyboard, or dance pad. Ultra low lag displays are now really expensive, niche items for PC gamers, meaning I need to spend over 1000 dollars for a good modern TV for rhythm games, or otherwise have a spare CRT sitting around with a bunch of extra cables and converters to put new games on an old display. There is no good way to play modern Guitar Hero, and that is a huge part of why it died.

      It's not really that hard to get a good calibration on HDTVs, but I know a more casual audience probably wouldn't want (or know how) to deal with anything like that.

    • @alxjones
      @alxjones 6 лет назад +2

      No matter how you calibrate it, it still throws me off. Even if the music and the notes line up with the timing window perfectly, the animation that indicates you hitting the notes always comes late (no way to fix that) so it never feels as clean and responsive as a no lag display like a CRT.

    You forgot to mention the popularization of HDTV's. The input lag made it next to impossible to play guitar hero, especially if you had been playing in CRT tv's up until that point. The input lag is anywhere from 40-150ms on an HDTV. I remember playing GH on an HDTV for the first time at a party. I could always play on Expert with the hyper speed cheat on and I was planning to show off. I failed instantly on every song I tried and people thought I was lying about my skill. It was the most embarrassing thing of my childhood lol.
    That's why today, you'll notice anyone still playing GH does so at their computer desk on a monitor because monitors have 5-10ms response times, generally speaking. Which is much closer to the original CRT tv's which had insanely low input lag. We're talking as low as 1-3ms though generally averaged around 5-10.
    So if you're someone who wondered why all the sudden you sucked, it very well could have been your tv if you were playing on an LED/LCD HDTV.

    • @akkros707
      @akkros707 5 лет назад

      Your right. I haven't been thinking hard enough and now I realize that it's my TV. My TV is 2008 or 2011 HDTV VIZIO. I've been recently playing Guitar Hero 2 on the 360 version on medium just for fun and I have been playing on Xbox controller and I've been sucking so much at the game and I dont even calibrate the game. The harmonix Guitar Hero games are fucking difficult if you have a certain TV. I keep missing notes or randomly over strumming the controller or guitar. There is one glitch that keeps fucking me up which on the Xbox 360 version, there is a glitch where typically the green fret button will malfunction out of nowhere and get stuck, this isn't the guitar or controllers fault, even if you have a CRT, it still happens anyway and it's never been fixed since the April 2007 update for the game. What is also harder is that the harmonix Guitar Hero games are tied to a BPM (I dont know what it stands for) and depending what song you play, the fretboard and character animations go fast, it gets hard to play the game if you have an HDTV. That's why whenever I use the guitar or regular controller, I always fuck up on those games and I'm not as good as I used to be. I can't FC any song easily enough on all the difficulties. I can FC anytime on GH3 but the harmonix Guitar Hero's, it takes me a while to FC and I never even bother. In the end, the best way to play the harmonix GH games, it's better if you have a CRT instead of an HDTV, it gets hard if you have one because it can fuck you up bad.

    To me, they just went too far away from what made the games fun. They should never have introduced multiple instruments, and instead focused on refining already amazing single player and multiplayer experiences that were guitar/bass only. They went way off the deep end with some of these ideas. The games based on individual bands were absolutely doomed to fail, and rightfully so. Who could justify the price tag for a music game so heavily centered on one band and one style of music? It’s a boring idea, and I really enjoy Van Halen and Metallica. To make it worse, they just continued to saturate the market with these niche concepts that in no way appealed to the audience that made the original games successful. GH3 was incredible, because it was a music game that was extremely immersive on all fronts. The guitar duels in single player were intense and gave a real sense of accomplishment when you finally won, multiplayer modes provided endless entertainment, and it was just overall incredibly stylized and fun to be around. The fact they strayed so far away from the core concepts and shot themselves in the foot with these boneheaded ideas is depressing, because I think music games still have a place in gaming.

      They wanted to make competition to Rock Band. Guess who got their DLC up and never stopped making profit (as little as may be)

      To be honest, I feel like the drums was an amazing addition to guitar hero, I personally learned how to truly play drums just from playing drums on the guitar hero, and it was also what got me playing real guitar. Songs like everlong that teach you how to play 16th notes, and use your hands and feet at the same time. A lot of musicians that I know personally said that they all played gh (Drums and Guitar) and it inspired them to pick up an instrument.

    It was an awesome game. My favorite ones are:
    - World tour
    - GH3
    - Metallica
    - WARRIORS OF ROCK!...
    WoR was, IMHO the best of the bunch. It brought the guitar back to GH. Pretty catchy songs. there were some very difficult. Some prog, some trash, some metal... it was just awesome. I still play it to this day. Hope my plastic guitar never breaks.

      WoR its my favorite too.. Oh Man, I wish that this game in particular had been released for PC... Imagine that, today they surely modded it and put a lot of things in it (as it happens now with the World Tour)

      I played most gh games and I enjoyed all of them, even live because I loved how there was an endless stream of songs that you could play. The tv feature was pretty cool too. I feel like I just had a lot of fun learning the new controller too.

      I find live neat but I wish they could have controller support or the experienced players from previous games the song choices that they made was nice it’s like the gateway to the other songs in the previous games but yeah overall it sucked

    I miss guitar hero. One of the few games that really only utilized pure skill and reaction time. You didn't have to do research in advanced or have pre-existing knowledge on the best "combos" or "strategies" to be good at the game. You just have to be fast and have good dexterity. It's a great equalizer. Of course, practice makes you a lot better...

    i miss the Guitar Hero and Rock Band days. When those games were HUGE. I've yet to see a music game as great as Rock Band 2. I remember when Rock Band had that promo with Pepsi where you could get free DLC songs by entering a code from the Pepsi caps and there was a music video contest. Good times.
    Hell, I loved Guitar Hero World Tour, Metallica, GHWOR, Lego Rock Band, and Rock Band 3. RB4 is pretty solid as well. But it just doesn't have the same feel that I had playing RB and GH during the 2007-2011. era

      @@qwertyuiopzxcfgh and Clone Hero dropped a nuke on its grave, annihilating any chance of a revival because it is literally the free, superior version of Guitar Hero. Also you can download the track list the entire Guitar Hero series for Clone Hero so Guitar Hero is now officially obsolete.
