  • I'm way past due updating this project. Had video sitting on the computer, just didn't get around to editing. The project has already progressed beyond this and I need to shoot some more video to show where this is now.
What is important here is showing how to "skin" the hull. Getting the exterior skin off is clearly the fastest way to deal with wet balsa. If the balsa is salvageable it can dry in as little as a couple of hours, or in some cases a couple of days. It is also not that difficult to replace any seriously damaged or decayed balsa. I used squares of Divinycel to outline the areas to be removed and then just used a sharp chisel to slice the bits away. Then inserted those squares into the newly cleared areas after cleaning the inner skin.
You can use a high volume vacuum pump or even a shop vac to press the new core into place. High volume vacuum has the advantage of tolerating a modestly leaky seal and you can simply use blue tape or even duct tape to hold the film into place. High levels of vacuum are not required to bed the new core.
To skin the outer fiberglass simply score it or cut it into about 4" x 4" tiles. Then using a pneumatic chisel shear the skin off the balsa. That leaves behind some fibers and a coating of resin that needs to be ground off of the balsa. Then with the balsa bare the drying can begin.

Would a vacuum pump used for vacuum on air conditioning split units also work? Or is the manifold too small??.
