    It's partially because we don't have a sense of community, and the only community we find is through consumerism.

      I think it's actually the other way around. . . consumerism was an intentional choice on a government level, pushed in the 50s to help the country recover from war, that fractured community.
      I really need to get around to reading A Consumer' Republic by Lizabeth Cohen, because I feel like it could answer a lot of my questions around this.

    All that just to have more garbage in their house that they'll probably never use again 😮‍💨
    I'm American and this hits. 'We are now only connected by what we buy,' absolutely hit and made me feel like I live in an episode of Black Mirror

    • @LjubaBubi

      So true. Not an American, a European. However, when I go out (from my property in the countryside- I ran away from the capital), I feel as if I am in Black Mirror. Every contact with a human being is one of the episodes- each human, each episode. Sometimes, I think that Matrix is overlapping. 😱 Am I getting crazy, or passersby? 👀😑

    when i had a kid someone told me "you have tl buy them xyz bwcause when they get to school and other kids have it theyll feel left out and rejected." like hello?? it is safe and healthy for kids to learn that everyone has different interests and ability to buy things. imagine saying that to a parent that cant afford the trendy paw patrol backpack. tf.

    Overtime I have noticed this too , so much waste . Example: people move into a house that was just renovated ; because it was outdated so they could sell it they renovated …. Now they move in ,
    and they want to tear it all down and make it perfect for “them “
    but think about all the waste that came from that one house???!!! NOW times that by 1000 (houses a day in one city ) like my mind can’t even fathom

    I recently saw a few videos-- they were new TO ME -- called Restocking my : fridge, bathroom, guest room, snack cart--I had trouble fathoming what I was seeing. The sheer cost money wise is crazy. But they take everything out of the packaging it comes in and put them into different bottles and bins etc. An entire refrigerator full of dozens of candies, chips, snack cakes and bars and sodas and waters and on and on. Then people who see it want to copy it. It's a lot of work a lot of money and a lot of waste. It's sad that it inspires people.

    Good point about how a lot of Americans lack belonging to a community. I think this sets us apart from other cultures in a bad way.

    I was just talking about how only certain things are like this where you get an instant community by buying your way in. Like to be part of a college you oay tuition plus maybe buy a college sweatshirt and other alumni will talk to you when they may ignore other people walking around or jeep culture you just buy one or even drive a rental and you’ll get the jeep wave out and about. It’s so bizarre but I can also see why it’s so addictive and causes people to want the easy “community” instead of doing the work of actually connecting on a meaningful level with others

  • @j96569
    @j96569 2 месяца назад +1

    Something that happens when you buy things just to have them, because they are cute or because everyone else has it, is you don't have money left for important things or to save for important things.
    It will ruin you financially and you won't understand why you're so poor.

  • @lauren8135
    @lauren8135 2 месяца назад

    It might be a backlash to my parents, it might because I’m trying to save money to buy a house, it might because having to clean and move and organize and curate and reorganize and dust possessions just stresses me out. But I am such a big only buy the thing if you absolutely require the thing and will use the thing on a regular basis.

    You either say enough is enough and realize you don't need to acquire more shit to be content with your life, or you jump on the same bandwagon everyone is on and live in a cycle of endless consumption while still being left unsatisfied.

    As a Canadian we definitely have a consumerist culture but I've been saying for years that American culture IS consumerism to a degree that surpasses any other country. When I first started saying it Americans hated it and got really defensive but now y'all are finally listening and it makes me hopeful for the future tbh

    Other people obsessing over it kinda makes it suck, respectfully. Remember when there were lines for beanie babies and now they’re 2 for $3 at goodwill (ok maybe 2/$10😬)? No one is gonna give a crap about those bags in 2 months.

And I saw it at my trader joe and I look at my daughter and said this is nice I can use that for many many years and now is all over my TikTok and RUclips channel and now I feel like 😩😩 what did I do.

    I agree to an extent. The problem isn't over-consumption, it's overproduction. You could say they go hand in hand and one drives the other but again that's only true to an extent. Capitalism necessitates over production, the corporations want to make a profit and they convince people that they must have it. People don't drive the market, we don't vote with our wallets. Corporations will produce just about anything and then market it non-stop, shove marketing down our throats and convince us we must purchase it. We cannot escape marketing, capitalism is the status quo and is rarely called into question, but as environmentalists we need to do more to challenge this status quo. The alternative to capitalism is not anti-capitalism, it is socialism. It may seem scary to imagine a world beyond capitalism but it is the way forward. I would love to see you getting more political on your channel. Second Thought and Our Changing Climate are great youtube channels to elaborate on this topic and a great jumping off point for further research. Much love. ❤ I don't mean to come across as judgemental or condescending, but overall my point is that simply by pushing for conscious consumerism, it doesn't get us anywhere. I don't want to be a dick, I know a lot of this channel focuses on that but working class people are not the issue. IDK I can't fit all of my thoughts into one comment, I'm not trying to be a hater(edit: also im not saying that just because "there is no ethical consumption under capitalism" means you should just give up and buy whatever you want. we should be boycotting virgin materials and consuming the least amount as possible. we get to our goal of a more ethical world by dismantling capitalism and policy change. im still learning as well 🙏🏻)

    That why I always kinda internally laugh when someone brags about phones, it genuinely not a good phone, it's expensive and you can have better for cheaper, but because people buy it, others buy it to fit in the mould... It's sad...
