Bugatti Engineering - 'O' rings in the valve guides??

  • We took the Type 44 to Prescott at the weekend to the Bugatti garden party. A fun day and Ivan caught up with lots of old friends and acquaintances.
There was a bit of a rattle coming from the engine on the way home, which Ivan diagnosed as the 2 piece camshaft not being as tightly joined as it should be. So this week the cam box came off and John and Ivan investigated. Whilst the cam box was off they used the opportunity to implement a Shed Bodge to the exhaust valve guides, by machining internal grooves and fitting 'O' rings within them. Hopefully will stop it smoking when it starts up.
Thanks to Noel Skeats @noel_skeats_photography for some great photos. Apologies for the shaky Prescott footage (at the weekend the usual camera was still lost in the boot of the Ferrari)

To be able to see the way the Bugatti engine is designed and built is extremely interesting. The previous video showing he roller bearing crankshaft assembly and disassembly was also very interesting. Just can't get enough of these content.

Suzy, I don't know if you intended to grow up to be a great documentary film maker, but in the instance of recording Ivan's wisdom for the ages I think you have met the mark. You are better at bringing the "Ivan Experience" to the RUclips masses than any of the previous videographers.
I believe it is because you know and appreciate Ivan for the genius that he is. I think you should build brass rails around him and charge admission. Thank you for letting us see a bit of Ivan.

Am I correct in thinking that this engine has a fixed head ? An that is the reason for the screwed in valve guides, you need the extra space with them out to get the valves in and out , also when John was machining the guide , he had the clamping bolt on the Dickinson tool post outside the usual slotted nut thingy , was this to give extra hight ? Thanks for a most interesting and informative video .

Many years ago I had a '63 2.5L Daimler V8 with colossal oil consumption (and lots of smoke). My local engine shop said they could cure it and cure it they did, fitting Series 1 Landrover valve guides which had internal o-ring seals just like you machined for that Bugatti. Simple but very effective. Another great video.

I think remember the valve guides in a Leyland L12 diesel from the 1970’s/80’s had an O ring inside. Very rare though. Totally forgot until seeing your film.

It's just part of the game with big complex machinery/vehicles, you expect problems and go looking for them after heavy work. That's what the first few trips are for. Predates the car even, e.g. "sea trials" for boats/ships.

On the whole hand filed cam thing, I think some forget that different follower types use different geometry. I think sliding fingers like that is a simple pair of parallel faces, easy enough to clean up by hand. Whereas in something like a typical post WW2 pushrod V8, the "flat tappet cam" setup most are familiar with, has a somewhat precise taper on the lobe that meets a point/circle on the slightly spherical convex lifter face so the lifter rotates instead of rubbing (this is where a wiped lobe starts) and the cam is forced back in the block against the single thrust bearing. Getting that right enough by hand would be a challenge.

I would like to build a few engines , from scratch. One idea is a flat 8, boxer-8. Using Chevy V8 heads , possibly crank, maybe use a flat plane crank. Custom cams. The crank case built similar to a motorcycle crankcase, acrossed with a Subaru,/VW,/Porsche. The cylinders bolt to the case. The crank bolting into the car. With bearings. And camor cams a cam for intake and one for exhaust to allow adjustments on events. LSA and such. With approx. 6.250"-6.500" with Honda or Toyota journal size, and possibly H-beam rods. 2.05"/1.65" valves and a pair of intakesthat bolt on over the valve covers with heat from the exhaust side to slightly heat the intake through a 1/2" tube with exhaust and a 1.5" pair of crossover tubes to keep a constant vacuum on each bank!. With about 4"-6" intake runners with individual throttles into large plenum 4.5x the intake runner volume. With about 68mm throttles. Three versions , one using sbc heads and crank, the second with LS heads, and third with big block chevy crank and 8.1L style heads the balance should be excellent. With 6 bolt mains using 20mm bolt. The cylinders bolting to the crank case with 8, 1/2" bolts. The heads using their bolt pattern. The mains using studs crossing the block can be tightened from either side. A cover plate, to seal the case. Then the cylinders bolt on(after the rods are bolted to the crank. Then the pistons in the cylinders. And the pins installed and cylinder bolted on.
The Bell housing with multiple bolt patterns. Chevy V8 and other good transmission /bell housing patterns. With 3" to 4.5" strokes and the possibilities of 9500+ RPM. In the shorter strokes. And 7250 in the long strokes! Curious to the sound, would it sound like a traditional sbc v8? Sorry to ramble! Have a awesome day!!

Brilliant ! I would wonder what type of O-ring you use (NBR 80 or 90?), the amount of initial resting pressure and how long it would last (depending on heat coming from how spirited the use)... then I suppose a properly ream guide is hard to beat to combine lubrication all along the stem and minimal play... ever considered fitting seals at the top rather (to limit engine off suction only)?
