Phil, I think whoever gets it, is getting a Prize.
I live in SoCal and boy howdy is it dry in our State. For a while the fires were down here, it got so bad that they were calling the San Fernando Valley (where I live) The Ring of Fire. Some places burned twice in the same year. A friend of mine almost had to Boogie, then 6 or 7 days later I drove into the Valley & looked up & the other side (friends area) was on fire again. TG she was ok. The next year I had 2 friends lose their homes, and another had some yard damage & a lot of smoke damage inside the house. I'll tell ya, it's really scary to be surrounded by fires. NorCal sure got more than their share. Yikes. I was looking online for housing. I almost took a job in Chico. The areas I was really lookin' at was Paradise. Of course it burned to the ground. Sure glad I decided against the job. 😱🤯
Ok, to the bowl... Yes that certainly is an interesting piece of wood. (I find interesting stuff too.) What made you decide to turn it?
When you were working on the back I saw color starting to show up. It really got my attention. On my end it looked like it had pinkish and grayish streaks running through the brown. It was really
unusual. I think it came out very nicely.
Ok...shapes/faces....When you first held it up and pointed out the 'burnt' end it was horizontal. From the side it looked like an alligator.
When you were talking about the poor bull who left his right horn eviscerating the Toreador's kidney. But had you been looking at it from our angle, straight on, you would have seen a dog.
For the top portion, the second you started to lift it up I saw a squirrel.
However while you were working on it what came to me was how great it would be for a mantel clock. I think it could be very cool.

Phil, I had a piece of drift wood I found and was going to turn it. That on your piece the left hand looked a lot like a dog. That is what I see in yours. I did a little more whittling in the front of mine to reveal a dogs face and turned out the middle into a bowl. It was really quite unusale, but that is my nature!!! It will never match the piece you turned it, It was a professional job. Let this be a lesson, look it over good ,you just might see a GOLDEN GOOSE!! What you are going to turn, may not be what it ended up to be. I turned out quite unique, it looked so good to me, I think Its going to be a keeper.!!!!. ❤ KEEP ON TURNING

Wow, what a great bowl, Phil, you really turned the little beast into a beauty! Absolutely love it! I admire your patience of letting a piece of wood show its own special character… I always feel like you are having like a silent conversation with it as you turn until you come to an agreement on what it wants to be… Very beautiful, great job as always, Phil, well done 👍🏻👏🏻 You take care, I am happy to see you back and enjoying yourself out in the workshop 😊 Thank you for another great video, Phil 🙏🏻

Well Phil, at the risk of repeating myself, you have a unique ability to bring the absolute best out of a piece of wood most people would not give it any thought as they threw on the fire. This ability that you instinctively bring to each wood turning that you do shows what an Artistic inner vision you have &, as a former Senior Master of Art, very few people have this vision when they look at a piece of wood like this. It is a stunning, unique piece pf Artwork produced by a man with enormous vision & yes, the bear & the bull were very clear. Brilliant grain & finish too my friend. Stay safe & stay well. Look forward to your next video, Don from South Aust.

Outstanding piece, Phil! I don't know what more to say than the usual. I love the look and the finish and the many levels of interest contained in it. You chose the perfect bowl size for it and I could see the bear before you even said it. However, I couldn't see the bull but I definitely thought I saw a few sea creatures in there. Great work and thanks for a solid video.

what do i see? i see something that was a piece of a good time on the beach. maybe some food being cooked over that fire, a few friends, some laughs, and memories. then, the fire went out, the wood washed away with the tide, and it found its way to Phil. and he brought it all back to life. wow. ive seen some really pretty traditional bowls, vases, and boxes. but this piece takes a discarded, forgotten, tossed-away chunk of wood, and really brings something beautiful for us to enjoy. thank you.❤

    Hi Phil.
I found your channel about a month ago and have been watching your videos. You are great.
I got a mini lathe this year for my 55 birthday. I always wanted to work on a lathe since shop in middle school when I got to use one. It’s been such a joy to turn wood. Your videos have taught me so much from different finishing techniques to different ways to use my gouges. I also have learned about planning projects, and how to do different things (like a mushroom shaped container and making a bowl with the bark on the edge). Thank you so much for being a wonderful teacher.
