Live version at the "Fillmore East" in 1971 is a MUST. In fact, that album is in the Library of Congress. It is hailed as one of the best, if not THE best, live albums of all time.
PS- Whipping Post, "Live at Fillmore East" goes for like 22 minutes.
PSS- Gregg was 23 and belted out vocals like a 60 y/o bluesman! Duane was 25. Hell, the entire band was barely old enough to drink.

..I think I was about 10 years old (1986) in Croatia ,former Yugoslavia then ..I don't remember if it was a weekend or a weekday, and of course I had the energy and curiosity to wander around and explore my little town around 8-9pm in late summer.. I slowly crept up to the window of the basement in the city center and of course there were several boys, 7-8 years older than me 'rolling' , sipping beers, chilling and listening to records. The sound of that Duane electric guitar and voice of Greg was the discovery of something completely unknown and new for me.. I fell in love with rock and roll, blues, soul... I have never forgotten that first discovery and feeling of listening the gramophone records and Allman brothers music...the stale smell of beer, moisture, 'cigarettes' all-mixed in the basement..😏🤘

Is there a live version? Hell yeah there is ... abou 25 minutes worth! Other suggestions: "One Way Out," "Ramblin Man," "Jessica," "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." All awesome live.

@@PatrolNation Allman Brothers 'Live at the Fillmore East' album still is one of the 'must haves' for any collector. That one concert lasted until early morning the next day and set the precedent for extended jam concerts in the future. There are tons of informative videos if you fancy looking into their backstory, just incredible, I think you'd enjoy it.

Thanks for bringing back the memories of my younger days. Nothing like The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Marshall Tucker to get a taste of Southern Rock/Blues. Another band that may have not had the same popularity but had a good sound, was Black Oak Arkansas, especially when they sang with the amazing Ruby Starr. Unfortunately she left us way too early.

My favorite band! I was fortunate at 16 y/o to catch them live at the Spectrum in Philly about a month or two after they cut their masterpiece in NY at the Fillmore East. As folks below mentioned, the live album is, "At Fillmore East" and many consider it the finest live Blues/Rock ever recorded. Be aware, most songs are WELL over 3/4 minutes long but not a wasted note. Also, this concert spills over to their next album, "Eat A Peach", a mix of live and studio. Well worth it, especially "Mountain Jam", a 33 minute plus song that has Duane doing some brilliant slide work after the drum solo, which by the way he's credited for inventing electric lead slide when his brother Gregg sent him some Coricidin pills for a cold and he emptied the bottle, put it on his finger and the rest is history.

Can't believe you haven't heard of them before. definitely listen to the Filmore East album, absolutely brilliant and then some of the live jams actually carry over to Eat A Peach. You've heard Duane Allman before even if you didn't know it. He worked on the Layla album with Clapton and provided all the slide guitar parts.
These guys have been around for ages but sadly both Gregg and Duane Allman have died along with Berry Oakley the bass player. But they left an awesome musical legacy

Add them to my list !!! That's funny. I've been a fan of ABB for 50 years. I still find myself listening to multiple versions of Whipping Post, Elizabeth Reed, Statesboro Blues, and many others in an evening. All of a sudden 2 or 3 hours have passed, and I have to force myself to stop. Amazing music.

A little more Southern Rock. This is definitely 70’s. True story: there was a man from my hometown (which I still currently reside) who was a stage hand for the Allman Brothers for many many years. In the early 80’s he came back home. Well...... old guy had partied way to hard with them back then. Our community never knew what we may see from day to day from him. U see, he purchased a home right on the main drag(Main Street). One morning before school, my uncle carried my 2 cousins and myself to a local fast food restaurant to get a breakfast biscuit and when we passed by the guys house, he was sitting on the porch butt naked. My uncle couldn’t get to the nearest pay phone fast enough. Lol. I can’t help but think of him every time I hear the Allman Brorhers. He passed away several years ago.

Fun fact: Duane Allman either wrote as some say or as the keyboardist on the song (Bobby Whitlock) claims, he sped-up the infamous riff on Clapton's "Layla." and played slide and other guitar parts on the original recording released on the album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs."

For me Ramblin' man was the introduction to the Allmans since it was all over the radio back in the day. Then other songs came along like Melissa and Midnight Rider that were all great to discover. Then I saw them live and reached the 'changed forerver' point and have loved them ever since. Play em on the ol' jukebox mate!

God I LOVE The Allman Brothers!! Best Southern Rock Band ever!!! I am a new subscriber, my friend! This is an early 1970s band from Florida. I believe this song dates from 1971. I was 14 years old at the time. I attended the same High School they did (not at the same time) Seabreeze Senior High, Daytona Beach, Florida.

Love this song...my band plays this all the time. I'm a bassist and it's so much fun to play!
When that 11/8 rhythm of the intro settles into the 12/8 of the verse you can just feel the release. It's like a weight being lifted off your shoulders.
