Finally, a clear explanation for drop shadows! I don't know why other tutorials had to make it so complicated. Thank you!

Good man!!! I haven't used this for years and I'd completely forgotten that I have to click on the FX icon on the layers. I hope that there's a special place in haven for folks that make good, useful videos like this for us RUclips viewers.
    Kind Regards . . . Andy

Thank you! I am so embarrassed to say that I have struggled with this for too many months. I finally took my 12-year-old son's advice and went to You Tube for help and found your tutorial. You explained it so simply and so well. I can now add drop shadows!! Yay!

When using the crop tool to increase the canvas size, try holding the ALT key (on a PC) when pulling the corner crop handle to symmetrically expand the crop box.

Excellent. You are exceptionally articulate and slowly enough, with plenty of useful visual instruction to allow a beginner to follow. I have struggled with some other Photoshop Elements video lessons - yours is far superior! Thank you!
One question - how does excess "Canvas" show up when you use the photo and shadow? Generally? And in the use I plan, which is to place the photo and shadow on top of a lager background photo in a photo-book?

You a great voice for teaching. Calm. Lower tones. However I still have a question. I'm doing a book cover. And my text is white against a light blue area. I'd like to create a drop shadow or just darken that area so the white text will pop. I see you haven't been here in a while so I'll keep looking. I hope you are still doing these videos. Subscribed. Thanks!

Here's how to save it w/o the Background:
    1. Click and drag the Background Layer to the Trashcan in the Layers Panel, NOT the general Trash for your computer.
    2. If you want it on a white bkgd just save it as a jpg and a white bkgd will be added.
    3. If you want to save it on a Transparent bkgd, go up to the File Menu and choose Save As and choose PNG in the Format drop-down list and click OK.
That's it! If you need further clarification, let me know. - Rick

Thanks Rick! This worked great!.....until today.I tried to edit the same image but remove the drop shadow effect, as it's not how I wanted it, I then saved it just as I did yesterday but now when I open it in Dreamweaver (as a repeat background) it's showing the white outline of the canvas which I don't want! It's the same If I open the image from within the folder I saved it to, you can see the background. Please help! Thanks.

Wonderful tutorial Rick! I use Lightroom for the majority of my editing, and only use Elements occasionally and have limited skills with it. I'm wondering if it is possible to create this process as a preset or style in order to use the same technique on every image with one click? If so, how would one do that?

Brilliant video Rick, I spent an hour on Google and RUclips trying to find this video, so thanks. I am very new to photo elements and I do have an additional question if that's ok?, I am going to use this final picture on a website but when i reduce the canvas size around the outside and save as a jpeg, it still shows the colour of the canvas (in my case cream). How do I just select the picture and the shadow and leave everything else behind. Thanks in advance.

hi Rick, great tutorial as always. I see that your crop tool has a "rule of thirds" grid. is that available in elements 9? thanks in advance.

I clicked on the fx button on the layer and unticked the effect box. Its annoying because it worked fine with something else I tried to make transparent. All I wanted to do was to draw a vertical long thin rectangle with a colour gradient running top to bottom, then remove the canvas so so I could use it as a background repeat in dreamweaver. However every time I saved it as a .png file it still showed the canvas in the back. I even tried to hide the canvas behind the image (make an overlap).

    PART 1of4
Good question. In general you would create your drop shadow as shown in the video. Then you would go up to the Layer Menu and choose "Flatten Image".
That will reduce your photo down to a one-layer file.
It would look fine if it was placed on a white background say of a web page or a photo book. The white around the photo would blend seamlessly into the white of the page. It would just appear as if the photo was casting a drop shadow on the page.

Hello Rick! I am using PSE 2020. I just followed your instructions to increase the canvas size and add a drop shadow to a few photos. It works perfectly in PSE 2020. But, at the end of the process, I did a select all and added a stroke (outline) around the white space. This added another shadow inside the stroke which I didn't want. The only way around this I found was to save the photo as a JPG after adding the drop shadow and then reload the photo and then add the stroke. Is there a better way to do this without the extra steps of saving as a JPG and then reloading it to add the stroke?

When increasing my canvas size, beyond the image size, I am getting a transparent border, not the white border shown in the video. Also, I find that every time I use my Drop Shadow layer style I can't get a vivid drop shadow, just a "hint of a shadow". Is there an option I can use when opening an image to improve my ability to display a vivid drop shadow. Thanks.

    PART 3of4
    3. Make sure you can see both photos in your Photo Bin at the bottom of your window.
    4. From the Photo Bin, double-click on the photo with the drop shadow so that it shows in the live work area. Go to your Layers Panel and click on the eyeball next to your Background Layer to hide its visibility. In the live work area you will notice that you no longer see the white around your photo and that it has been replaced by a checkerboard pattern. That pattern represents transparency.

  • @EssentialPSElements
    @EssentialPSElements  11 лет назад

    PART 5of5
Now go up to the Layer Menu and choose "Flatten Image" to combine it all into one layer. And now go up to the File Menu and choose Save As... In the dialog window that appears, give it a new name and choose a place on your computer to save it to.
Your new photo can be placed as is into the photo book.
If you need further clarification, let me know and I will try to help.
    Good luck! - Rick

Rick, I've tried to do this but have run into some problems. I don't have overlapping rectangles, so I just duped the background layer; however, when I go to enlarge the canvas using the crop tool, it doesn't work: the crop tool will work only *on* the photo, not beyond it. Please, what am I doing wrong?

  • @EssentialPSElements

    PART 2of4
But if you printed it out it might look funny because you would have that extra space around your photo to accommodate the shadow.
In your situation where you want to place it on top of a larger photo, you probably need to combine them BEFORE you put the photos in the photobook. Here's how:
    1. Do NOT flatten the photo with the shadow as suggested earlier.
    2. Open the larger photo in Elements. Now you have both photos open in Elements.

I'm having an issue with the last steps of the drop shadow where you show that you can just move the photo around to change the angle - I keep ending up with an actual edge of the original photo showing . I wanted to attach a screenshot to show you but there's no way to do that! Suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

    PART 4of4
    5. Now from the Photo Bin, double-click on the larger photo so that it shows in the live work area.
    6. Go back down to your Photo Bin and click-and-drag the photo with the drop shadow up to the live work area.
You should see what you described that you want for your photo book which is a photo with a drop shadow sitting on top of a larger photo.
OOPS... LOOKS LIKE IT NEEDS TO BE 5 PARTS!
Please see PART 5of5 for final part.
