Just for clarification about why they didn't blow up the bigger planet, that planet was a gas giant, like Saturn or Neptune. There's a good chance if they fired the Death Star at it, the potential explosion from igniting all of that gas could destroy it as well as the rebel base. That's why they didn't fire at it.

So little information. This film originally released as *Star Wars* back in 1977. *A New Hope* along with *Episode IV* wasn't added until the theatrical re-release on April 10, 1981 just a year after The Empire Strikes Back released. Empire Strikes Back released with *Episode V* in it's opening crawl making it the first Star Wars film to have an episode number. This was a year before *Episode IV* was added to the first Star Wars (A New Hope) so I imagine alot of people were confused when *Episode V* popped up thinking "Wait Episode V!!! Did we miss something?".
Pretty much the director George Lucas had the idea of releasing a trilogy of films that being Episode IV, V, and VI later known as the *Original Trilogy* and then go back years later and do Episodes l, ll, and lll retelling how Darth Vader came to be these being known as *The Prequals*. Don't think too hard about the numbering system, basically the Original, Prequals, and then the Sequels.

RIP always to Carrie Fisher(Princess Leia), who sadly passed away in 2016!
I'm enjoying your MCU journey so far. And I'm so excited that you're starting on the "Star Wars" saga.
The reason for the really good special effects for it being a 1977 movie is because you're watching the "special edition". In 1997 director George Lucas went back to clean up, and add in special effects and extra scenes to the original trilogy.
16:16 - 16:29 This was one of the scenes that George Lucas went back to change. This scene was originally filmed with an Irish actor playing Jabba. That's why there's the line "Jabba, you're a wonderful human being".
I'm already looking forward to the next one, "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back".

To this day, A New Hope is still one of my all time favorite movies. The reason the Rebel ships had the little droids in them, was to handle navigation/repairs in flight. The reason the bad guys don't have them on their ships, is because the Bad Guy ships are mass produced for more of a swarm tactic, no shield, navigation, or even life support, thus needing the bad guys to be in full flight gear.

    • @oneironaut420
      @oneironaut420 10 месяцев назад +40

It's not really a plot hole at all. People just overthink things. To us back in 77, we just assumed that something so big and complicated would have some small structural weakness they overlooked. No need for a long, drawn-out explanation, just keep the plot moving.

It's not really a plot hole though, Rogue One just overcomplicated it. In this movie we see that the exhaust port is heavily defended and that targeting computers can't lock on properly. That's why the first attempt fails. It's basically an impossible shot to make but of course the Force allows you to do the impossible.

fun fact: in the original release of A New Hope they didnt have the cgi to make jabba the hutt into the species you currently see him as, so if you look up videos of the original scene (it ended up being a deleted scene until a 1997 rerelease with cgi) Jabba is played by an actual human, hence why Han Solo refers to him as a human being. There are two ways you could watch the films after this point.
First is the original relased order:
    > A New Hope (IV)
    > The Empire Strikes Back (V)
    > Return of the Jedi (VI)
    > The Phantom Menace (I)
    > Attack of the Clones (II)
    > Clone Wars (2003)*
    > Revenge of the Sith (III)
But there is an alternate order that some people try known as 'Machete Order' where you watch the Prequel films in-between V and VI. It ties all the films together and makes the ending of VI feel much more rewarding.
    > A New Hope (IV)
    > The Empire Stikes Back (V)
    > The Phantom Menace (I)
    > Attack of the Clones (II)
    > Clone Wars (2003)*
    > Revenge of the Sith (III)
    >Return of the Jedi (VI)
*Clone Wars (2003) was a mini animated series that was made to bridge the gap between II and III at the time they were being made.
If you like the movies, I also recommend watching 'The Clone Wars (2008)' afterward. This is an animated show that expanded on/rectonned the 2003 mini series.
It starts with a movie, followed by 7 seasons.

Quick explanation for what Han said to Jabba about being a “wonderful human being”. When the film first released in 1977, that scene wasn’t included because of time constraints, and there was no mention of Jabba at all. Then episode V mentioned him and episode VI came out and introduced Jabba as we know him, but he was a puppet. So, when A New Hope was first rereleased in 1997, the scene was reintroduced and included a really bad CGI model of the Jabba puppet masked over the human character. Since then, it’s been edited a couple more times and now we have the scene in this version, which I think is from 2011.

15:41 He actually didn't miss the shot from that close. In the original theatrical release Greedo didn't fire his weapon at all. George Lucas thought Han shooting first sent a bad message to his young viewing audience (although he claimed Greedo was supposed to shoot first in the original release), so in 1997 (20 years after the theatrical release) Lucas had this changed for the re-release of the film ("Special Edition"). The worst part about this is that it's so obviously a dummy of Han sitting there. It's the most widely criticized change to the original Star Wars trilogy.

    1. Sir. Alec Guinness/Obi-Wan didn't want the part. Being a Shakespearian actor, he thought the entire idea was silly and was beneath him, but his wife talked him into taking the part.
    2. The shrug Chewie gives Luke after he scares the tiny black droid is 🤪
    3. These movies were put out in a certain order because there was limited technology and Lucas used and pushed forward the images needed to make a quality product. The best way to watch the is in the order they came out. We had to wait years for the next one. There was no internet where we had access to them whenever we wanted.
    4. No need to go into anything after VI. Disney took over and the quality dropped. I realize you have to.
    5. The only CGI was put in for the 25th anniversary package in this film are the critters the stormtroopers were riding at the beginning of the search for the robots, a couple of the huge critters outside the pub and the scene with Jabba the Hutt. Those were put in later after CGI was available. Otherwise, everything is what we had in 1977.
    6. Obi-Wan sacrificed himself after he told Vader he would be stronger than ever. He went back into the force. He knows it's Luke's job to take over.
    7. The awkwardness in the detention space is because Ford didn't know his lines. It was kept in the movie anyway because it worked.
    8. The next two are the best of the series. Enjoy!

Leia had a dozen Alderaan Royal House and Guardsmen with her on the Tantive IV, and another 100 royals and servants living with her on Coruscant. Some retired from age or trauma, some even joined the Empire and were paid handsomely. The remainder stayed loyal to the end.
The Empire knew the Princess had gone to the Yavin system, so the Rebel Alliance had to have some significant forces there. They didn't immediately know it was the fourth moon, until the Rebel fighters came at them, and didn't have a full charge for the super-laser yet (takes several days) to blow up Yavin itself.

You've already had plenty of good explanations as to why the Death Star doesn't blow up the giant planet Yavin. In addition to the time it may take to detonate it and charge the explosive ability, you also need to consider the cost. Building the Death Star was ridiculously expensive. Sending enough energy to blow up a planet also costs a lot. So I think they are very precise with how and when they detonate. Then it is more economically advantageous to circle a planet and blow up its moon directly. As long as they don't get wiped out themselves first... 🙃

    • @sandman_says_runrunner4701
      @sandman_says_runrunner4701 10 месяцев назад

You are wrong on so many levels. The numbering came into affect in 1980 with the release of "Empire" and then "Star Wars" was retconned to "Episode IV - A New Hope" in 1981 after that release. The reason the PT was numbered I - III was because they were the PT, not because of better watch order. It is always better to watch for the first time in release order not numbered order... always.

    • @sandman_says_runrunner4701
      @sandman_says_runrunner4701 10 месяцев назад

@Antonio-Gransci Oh... OK, he is also the one that changed Greedo to shooting first (and missing at 4 feet). George may have created Star Wars, but he is not always right. In fact it was his friends and mostly Marcia that saved Star Wars and made it the hit it became.
By the way... you should look up in the dictionary what "fact" and "factually" actually mean, because you are using it wrong. In George's OPINION he wants it watched 1 to 6. He also never intended anything since he only intended ONE movie. He is making the rest up on the fly.
The reason George wants the viewing order to be I - VI is because he is butt hurt that many fans did not like the PT, and George has a GIANT ego. He does many things out of spite.
Lastly, I would much rather preserve the reveals of the OT than the PT. The OT being a much, much better film trilogy anyway (damn right I am an OT "fanboy" and proud of it). Also, most everyone born after me will watch them IV-V-VI-I-II-III, especially for first time viewing, as they should.

Yavin, the big, red planet that the moon with the Rebel Base on it orbits, is a gas giant so would have a rather small core. If they blew up the core it likely wouldn't affect the moon all that much. As such, it was more prudent just to orbit Yavin and destroy the moon with the Super Laser. It's also possible that it would be difficult to target the core through all the gas which may diffuse the laser; it is light, after all, it's different to a blaster. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie and thank you for the reaction; it's always great to watch someone experience this masterpiece for the first time. I wish I could see it for the first time again. Have a good one, mate.

    • @andrewmattle7956

This, and in addition to that it actually takes a long time to charge the super laser. Most of the interior of the Death Star is a gigantic reactor/battery to produce and store the necessary energy. It takes a full 24 hours to recharge the beam when fired at planet destroying strength. Much quicker to orbit the gas giant for 30 minutes.

So during the production of A New Hope Lucas had to basically invent most of the special effects he needed for this movie because nothing like this had ever been tried before. He put together a team of visual special effects experts for this movie who would eventually went on to found Industrial Light and Magic, who now do the special effects for pretty much every major Hollywood blockbuster these days. Man just invented that power house of studio and then released it into the wild to make the movie going experience better for everyone.
He also put together a team to see if the visual efffects could be made with computer animation which was an idea floating around Hollywood at the time but which no one took seriously. The team conclused that it was possible to use computers to do what he wanted but it would take them like another decade to make the tech for it. So Lucas mostly made the movie with models and fireworks but he kept funding that team to invest in the future. Later on he would sell the company he had made for that team to Steve Jobs, during the time in the nineties when he had been outsted from Apple who renamed that company Pixar and started making computer animated movies.
So all modern computer animation and CGI work traces its origins back the George Motherfucking Lucas

ok so i just started this video, and i can see hes confused already, so when the starwars movie first released it was just called "starwars: a new hope" it wasnt "episode 4" or what ever, after the original 3 movies(which was a complete trilogy), they did "prequals" which is episodes 1 through 3, which expanded the universe and explained more stuff and just gave a better back story to the characters, and after the prequals got made, they then went back and added "episode 1" "episode 2" and so on, to make it easier on "none starwars fans" to get into the franchise later down the road, because if your new to starwars and you see "starwars a new hope" "starwars a phantom menace" "starwars the empire strike back" and all the other names, you wouldnt understand what order the movies went in(if you were someone new to the starwars searies), so they added "episode 1" "episode 2" "episode 3" "episode 4" and all the rest to make it easier to know storywise what order the movies went in
with that being said, even though most starwars fans hate the prequals, it would of been better if you did start with the prequals(episode 1), because thats the story order, and explains more about the universe of starwars

Nice vid. I'm 48 and have incredible vague memories of being a toddler (age 2 or maybe 3) and aware this was on in the cinema. I probably was taken to see it. By the next film three years later, I was already immersed in it - like almost everyone.
The whole kinda 'space buddhism magic' thing with the Jedis has been over-used massively nowadays but was really fresh back in those days, so when Luke uses it to try to destroy the Death Star it was nail-biting! Having said that, back then there were TONS of WW2-themed movies etc, so the Star Wars space battles felt a lot like those. (The whole trench attack at the end of this first film stole a lot of ideas/staging directly from The Damb Busters).
We were swapping star wars figures with mates, making our own battlesets, collecting the Panini sticker albums, buying the excellent 'making of books'. We'd learn the names of the artists and model makers and it felt like we were distant members of that huge family.
The fact that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were putting out SO many amazing movies in the 1970s and 1980s meant they were kinda building our reality, as kids. They gave us a lot of joy.

While Rogue One offers an explanation for the thermal exhaust port weakness, it's not really needed.
Within this movie we see that the exhaust is ray shielded and defended by 20 guns. In order to reach it to even attempt the shot you have to fly down an incredibly difficult, narrow trench, making you an easy target for the guns or any Imperial fighters flying behind you.
Then if you even manage to get past the defences, it turns out that targeting computers can't lock on with enough precision to fire into the hole. The torpedoes literally have to turn 90 degrees at the last moment to enter the exhaust port. Essentially, what the rebels are trying to do is make an impossible shot and this is explained in the movie through dialogue and action.
When Han says "great shot kid, that was one in a million" he's not exaggerating. Luke literally does the impossible. The only other person in the galaxy capable of making that shot is the guy flying behind him, trying to kill him. Thanks to the Force, Luke does the impossible, calling back not only to Luke's training with Obi-Wan but also Darth Vader's statement that the ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Fun facts about this film: It was originally just called "Star Wars", the original film had none of the creatures in Mos Eisley (They added CG creatures later when technology had progressed, including the storm trooper riding that giant lizard near the beginning). Jabba the Hutt was originally a human dude. That's why Han says "You're a wonderful human being", and Han never makes eye contact with the slug because he's looking at the guy who originally was in the film. During the Greedo vs Han scene, Greedo never shoots. Han just mercilessly shoots him first. But they changed it later so it looks like Han is acting out of self defense. Also the guy who played Vader in the suit is Australian (Or British I don't remember) and they acted according to what the actor behind the mask was saying and doing. They later added James Earl Jones' voice to Vader in the editing phase of the film. Last thing, the lightsabers were flimsy reflective material which is why the duel between Obi Wan and Vader is so slow. If they had done anything more forceful the blades would have broke LOL.
I am sure there are WAY more changes, but those are the main ones. I also think it's funny that the x-wings "buffer" when they fly IN SPACE, when there is no air for them to buffer on LMAO. Enjoy Empire Strikes Back! It's the best Star Wars film.
