No no, Han DID shoot first in the original. In the special edition released in the 90s they changed it so that Greedo shot first because they thought somehow it was dishonorable for Han to shoot first.
The fans did NOT appreciate this, and it has been a controversial topic since. Most fans will say "Han shot first!"

    • @hunterackerman1697
      @hunterackerman1697 8 месяцев назад +26

I still don't understand the complaint. It was in self defense.

    • @R3_dacted0
      @R3_dacted0 8 месяцев назад +112

@@hunterackerman1697 The scene was actually altered 5 different times.
Originally Han shot before Greedo could respond. This was to establish Han as more of a morally grey, no nonsense type character. Lucas thought later that it made Han look like a bad guy, so he had the scene re-edited to have Greedo fire first, miss, and have Han fire in self defense. Fans didn't like this because they felt like it was a bit of a character assassination of Han.
The 3rd edit kept Greedo firing first but made him slower at pulling the trigger... which honestly makes Han look less skilled when you see the edit because Greedo pulls his blaster like a snail.
The 4th edit made it so Han and Greedo shot _at the same time,_ which is admittedly somewhat better.
The 5th and most recent edit gives Greedo an extra line of dialogue, "Maclunkey," before he fires his blaster. But it's still timed to have them both shoot at the same time.
IMO, I like the act of Han firing first in the original cut, but I actually prefer some of the later edits that change the exchange of fire into a wider shot rather than a closeup on Greedo getting blasted as it was originally. The 4th edit is probably my favorite presentation overall, but it could be made better if they still kept Han as the one who fires first.

Something to consider is that, prior to Princess Leia - and Ellen Ripley from "Alien" - women's roles in sci-fi movies mostly consisted of standing around in a tinfoil miniskirt and screaming while the chisel-jawed male lead fistfought with rubber bug-eyed aliens.
Back in 1977, the beautiful princess to be rescued rolling her eyes at her lovable idiot rescuers, snatching the gun and leading the charge herself was *huge.* I cannot overstate what a moment that was in the history of pop culture.
Now, generations later, a group of young men watching it are able to just nod and go "yeah, if she's involved with the Rebellion, it would make sense that she'd know how to fight." It's one of those moments that makes me hopeful that things really can change for the better.

23:10 wanted to drop this little fun fact; After the Clone Wars, where the Seperatists (the "bad guys") battled against the Republic (now the Empire), they had HOARDS of battel droids to fight for them. They were programed to be relentless and merciless. So in the early days of the Empire and even during the New Republic, droids were basically considered even less than second class citizens, despite their advanced programing and usefulness. The carnage the droids brought during the Clone Wars just remained too fresh in the minds of people, making them untrustworthy in their eyes, hence the "racist" remarks to the droids in this scene. Funny enough, there were a few attempted droid rebellions, but most were either isolated or were eliminated before they could spread.

Watching this movie in the modern day, I have come to greatly appreciate how much the movie treats it's audience like they're smart. Characters are only introduced when they actually come into the story, which necessarily means that Luke, for all intents and purposes the main character, is only introduced 20 minutes in. We don't need any detailed backstories beyond what is related to the hear and now, but we get exactly what we need to know from the way the characters act. Note how there aren't any real exposition dumps beyond what would naturally occur in a conversation and the original scroll. I'm hard pressed to think of a lot of modern movies that can say the same
There's a story about filming Vader's first scene and Mark Hamill (being the young relatively inexperienced actor) said to Lucas "Shouldn't we have two of rebels say "That's Vader, he's the evil x, y, and z that did this this and this?". Lucas just responded "This guy is dressed in all black walking through dead bodies while ominous music plays. If people don't pick up that he's the bad guy, we've failed at our job." To which Mark thought "Oh, he's brilliant"

      1997, yes.
The Jabba scene, in particular, was actually a deleted scene which wasn't in the original theatrical cut. It featured an actor standing in for Jabba, probably because Jabba's design wasn't fully conceptualized yet. The scene never made the original cut. However by 1997, with all 3 original movies released and Jabba having his final design already featured in Return of the Jedi, they went back and remastered the deleted scene, superimposing a rough CGI version of Jabba over the actor and including it in the 1997 special edition release.
They later went on to re-edit it again and replace it with better CGI in later releases.
In fact, there is even a fan edited version that completely changes Jabba into a Hologram, which honestly makes the most sense, imo.

so something funny, the jabba scene at 26:45 was filmed before jabba was turned into a massive slug monster. there's unedited footage of the scene where Jabba is actually a human man, and "The Hutt" is just a title or something. he talks in galactic common and everything. thats why solo calls him a "wonderful human being". this scene was cut from theatrical release, and apparently added back in for the cgi releases where they CGI'ed over old jabba with a slug monster. they even edited solo to walk over his tail.
also talking about all the CGI, I'm pretty sure the original theatrical release had NO CGI whatsoever. it was all practical. there are some CGI scenes that are added for this cut, and even some scenes where disappointingly they went over previously practical effects with CGI and replaced them.
(edit) oh also, something really cool. all the lightsaber and laser effects and stuff were done by literally cutting out sections of film or drawing them on. cutting out film would allow the light from the projector to blast through, causing bright light effects like that. some of the space scenes are literally done with this method by poking out tons of tiny dots in the film. also a lot of spaceship scenes are two film pieces of "space background" and "miniature space ship" film that have been physically cut together by cutting out a hole shaped like the space ship in the film and then overlaying the two film pieces over eachother.
if you look up how they did all these old effects for films from this era, especially star wars, it's SO FASCINATING how they did everything that they did.

The glow of the lightsaber fight between vader and Obi-wan alone show that. The bit of Biggs enthusiasm meeting Luke was great stuff they shouldn´t have cut. Han Solo interaction with Jabba this early on was fun too. Graphic deaths Owen and Beru more impact. Overall of the trilogy the New Hope is far and wide the best in remastered form.

I'm baffled that the reactors think the CG is from 77. What are they smoking.

@@embran8486Couldn't disagree more. Fine, touching up mistakes and adding some pretty skyboxes is fine. But the rest of the changes detract from the movie, especially the CG stuff that stick out like a sore thumb.

To be clear: In the 1977 original, when Greedo was about to fire at Han, the camera cut to an explosion effect over Greedo, then cut back to the wider shot as a smoldering Greedo falls onto the table, so we mostly infer that Han shot pre-emptively.
Meanwhile, George Lucas himself says that his intention was for Greedo to take the first shot allowing Han to act in self-defense. But a lot of fans prefer the pre-emptive shot (aka. "Han shot first") due to what it implies about Han's character at this point in the story.
Jabba's appearance in this film was originally a deleted scene, with a human actor playing the role of Jabba. Despite him being mentioned in this film and its sequel (Empire Strikes Back), Jabba's appearance as an alien slug was actually not decided until the third film in the trilogy (Return of the Jedi).
54:10 - Final Fantasy 7 wasn't the first game to have a Biggs and Wedge. In Final Fantasy 6, you started the game with two redshirts also named Biggs (or "Vicks") and Wedge.

Did you know, in 1955, Alec Guinness was one of the first persons James Dean showed his new Porsche to. When he seen it he said it felt sinister and hungry and told James not to get in it, if he did he would be dead in a week. 1 week later James Dean was in a head on collision with the only other car on the road and died. Almost force level premonition

8:35"Even the CGI from them doesn't look that bad" CGI did not exist in 1977. These shots are from the rerelease of Star Wars in 1997 The Special Editions.

26:04 😍 501st legion is a very wide non profit organization
(Super happy you know and are telling others about it) they focus on the "dark side" movie accurate costumes. All costumes are hand made ❤
In my area there is a separate group for the rebel costumes, but they are not as well known. Most of the rebel members are also 501st members or former members

So, lore tidbit about why everyone's racist towards droids:
It's been about twenty or thirty years since the Clone Wars, during which one of the belligerents was the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The CIS primarily used armies of battle droids to fight this war, and planets of the Outer Rim (like Tattooine), saw horrific destruction and terror wrought at the hands of droid armies.
So anyone old enough to remember the clone wars is going to have some very bad memories related to droids. Hence, why they're not wanted in a bar.
Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if the sight of a droid triggers ptsd in some people.

So the whole thing about "Han shot first" is that in the theatrical release Han Shot and Greedo didn't shoot.. later they remade it so Greedo shot and missed...
So fans say "Han shot first" or "Han shot PERIOD" since there was no second shot..
