No no, Han DID shoot first in the original. In the special edition released in the 90s they changed it so that Greedo shot first because they thought somehow it was dishonorable for Han to shoot first.
The fans did NOT appreciate this, and it has been a controversial topic since. Most fans will say "Han shot first!"

    • @hunterackerman1697

I still don't understand the complaint. It was in self defense.

    • @R3_dacted0
      @R3_dacted0 4 месяца назад +103

@@hunterackerman1697 The scene was actually altered 5 different times.
Originally Han shot before Greedo could respond. This was to establish Han as more of a morally grey, no nonsense type character. Lucas thought later that it made Han look like a bad guy, so he had the scene re-edited to have Greedo fire first, miss, and have Han fire in self defense. Fans didn't like this because they felt like it was a bit of a character assassination of Han.
The 3rd edit kept Greedo firing first but made him slower at pulling the trigger... which honestly makes Han look less skilled when you see the edit because Greedo pulls his blaster like a snail.
The 4th edit made it so Han and Greedo shot _at the same time,_ which is admittedly somewhat better.
The 5th and most recent edit gives Greedo an extra line of dialogue, "Maclunkey," before he fires his blaster. But it's still timed to have them both shoot at the same time.
IMO, I like the act of Han firing first in the original cut, but I actually prefer some of the later edits that change the exchange of fire into a wider shot rather than a closeup on Greedo getting blasted as it was originally. The 4th edit is probably my favorite presentation overall, but it could be made better if they still kept Han as the one who fires first.

Watching this movie in the modern day, I have come to greatly appreciate how much the movie treats it's audience like they're smart. Characters are only introduced when they actually come into the story, which necessarily means that Luke, for all intents and purposes the main character, is only introduced 20 minutes in. We don't need any detailed backstories beyond what is related to the hear and now, but we get exactly what we need to know from the way the characters act. Note how there aren't any real exposition dumps beyond what would naturally occur in a conversation and the original scroll. I'm hard pressed to think of a lot of modern movies that can say the same
There's a story about filming Vader's first scene and Mark Hamill (being the young relatively inexperienced actor) said to Lucas "Shouldn't we have two of rebels say "That's Vader, he's the evil x, y, and z that did this this and this?". Lucas just responded "This guy is dressed in all black walking through dead bodies while ominous music plays. If people don't pick up that he's the bad guy, we've failed at our job." To which Mark thought "Oh, he's brilliant"

"What does a princess even mean in space?"
I actually love how unclear that was in the film.... the added lote is this....
She's the daughter of the leader of Alderaan...so, princess... the leader of Alderaan, Bail Organa (you'll meet him in the prequels and in Rogue One, which is more like a Prologue for THIS film) is also Alderaan's representative in the Galactic Senate (Tarkin mentioned the Emperor dissolving the Imperial Senate...same thing, became Imperial after the Emperor declared himself the Emperor... the bit about the Emperor taking marshal law type power is in the prologue of the book which was based off the same script and released about the same time as the film.)
So if worlds in Star Wars are like nations on Earth... then princesses would be royalty of those worlds, IF royalty exists in that world's sovereign government.
Also, Senators in Star Wars is mote like ambassadors in the United Nations... the Galactic Republic (and then the Galactic Empire) being like the United Nations.
So why is the Empire evil? Imagine if the Chairman of the United Nations declared himself Emperor and then turned the entire world into a police state under his military's rule... and his chief general was a magic wielding badass.

So, lore tidbit about why everyone's racist towards droids:
It's been about twenty or thirty years since the Clone Wars, during which one of the belligerents was the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The CIS primarily used armies of battle droids to fight this war, and planets of the Outer Rim (like Tattooine), saw horrific destruction and terror wrought at the hands of droid armies.
So anyone old enough to remember the clone wars is going to have some very bad memories related to droids. Hence, why they're not wanted in a bar.
Hell, it wouldn't surprise me if the sight of a droid triggers ptsd in some people.

To be clear: In the 1977 original, when Greedo was about to fire at Han, the camera cut to an explosion effect over Greedo, then cut back to the wider shot as a smoldering Greedo falls onto the table, so we mostly infer that Han shot pre-emptively.
Meanwhile, George Lucas himself says that his intention was for Greedo to take the first shot allowing Han to act in self-defense. But a lot of fans prefer the pre-emptive shot (aka. "Han shot first") due to what it implies about Han's character at this point in the story.
Jabba's appearance in this film was originally a deleted scene, with a human actor playing the role of Jabba. Despite him being mentioned in this film and its sequel (Empire Strikes Back), Jabba's appearance as an alien slug was actually not decided until the third film in the trilogy (Return of the Jedi).

Highly recommend watching the Star Wars episode of Phineas and Ferb. Dan Povenmire (series co-creator and VA for Doof) originally pitched it as a joke with a pic of Doof as Darth Vader, something he made once Disney acquired Lucasfilms. They decided to make it a real one hour special, and it actually adds context to stuff in “A New Hope” that happens off-screen and makes each transition to each scene feel a lot more connected.

Saw posters of a guy in an ape suit (Chewbacca) and a guy wearing rags (sand people). Had very low expectations. Caught the last 10 minutes of the film first! Stayed to see the whole film second showing. I taught myself how to draw. Dropped out of Architecture in College and transferred to Commercial Arts to pursue a career as an illustrator. Moved to Canada in 1979. I now work as an illustrator and sculptor, first book with illustrations and book covers. All because of Star Wars in 1977.

And if you want some more context around the event of a new hope you can watch phineas and ferb starwars, witch is entirely canon, or atleast i could be as its events all happen slightly of screen feom the movie.

I know your laughing at the sound of the spaceships but the TIE fighters are actual what they would sound like. TIE=Twin Ion Engine. And that’s how an ion engine actually sounds like.

The psychic damage I took from "The CGI holds up." My Gawd.
I suppose the most obvious answer to the game question is KoTOR but that's a double-edged sword for me personally as I've _never_ been able to do or watch a darkside run and I know Ruff would not hesitate for a second.

You should react to 'Rogue One' right away while this is still fresh in your mind. The time between the end of 'Rogue One' and the start of 'A New Hope' might be about 30 minutes.

5:00 star wars at the time first pitched many ppl thought george lucas was bat@!#% crazy with this sci fi idea since prior to star wars the most known scifi media was primarily sci fi odysseys/pulp action like star trek and similar. even animes like space battleship yamato (in america its star blazers) and similar by same creator delve alot into this. but with star wars it vastly changed the sci fi genre on what to expect, how aliens/tech should look, mixture of other themes like the force is pretty much space magic and so on. plus admittedly it did take some ideas from Dune book which was also in its own corner of scifi bat@#$!ness.
random: funny is in 1979, 2 years after this in japan this kinda happaned again for a franchise introduced called Mobile Suit Gundam. in japan the most popular mecha genre is super robots (if know gurren lagann, neon genesis evangelion then yeah) with crazy fights, wild special attacks (the crotch/breast missiles, dead serious), and so on. gundam when yoshiyuki tomino pitched it was still big mechas that fight back against an opposing force BUT war focus then hero defend earth focus. mechs used for military warfare then fight off alien/rival scientist mechs, young pilot forced into warfare then seeking glory/coolness, human philosophy on living in space and evolution of humankind and so on. same thing that ppl thought tomino was bat@#$! crazy for thinking of this.
both tomino and lucas surprising are almost alike on what they needed to do to get the franchise up and running. from personal funds, making own toys do to toy molds not matching at the time, alot of health risks, hypinh ppl up with previews and so on, to even 2000s when they made their questionable sequel/prequels that fans argue on and the questionable edits. without gundam it wouldnt have force the mecha genre to change. this eventually influenced down the road creations of neon genesis evangelion to of course later gurren lagann on using serious story elements of life and humanity to maintain the wild/cool action attacks.

There was a fun parody of Star Wars that had the line where someone said "Why do we all have British accents if we're all from outer space and there is no Great Britain?" Doesn't have to be a reaction but the Family Guy parody to Star Wars is an absolute must watch.
