You've literally answered the question I've been looking for on youtube for so long. I kept asking everyone what to do with all the files in unity to combine them and not a single person gave me a helpful tip
This was a godsend and exactly what I needed! Huge improvement over doing it in Unity. My use-case here was having an Avali avatar with headphones. The headphones would clip through the ears while in motion despite setting up 'ignore transforms' (which did help a bit, but still didn't solve the problem). Following the exact process shown in the video resulted in an Avali wearing headphones that no longer clip whatsoever while in motion & the ears have physbones Bloody brilliant! :D thank you so much
I came back to VRC today. I watched many tutorials about customizing avatars. Basically when nobody was thinking about physbones. What I wanna say is: I never tried to add cloths to my avatars, and thats something I wanna do now and thanks god, you are here to show how its done and your tutorial is hands down, really good. When I try to copy the components with pumpkins avatar tools I get a absolute ton of errors and I followed the turtorial perfectly so I have no idea what to do :(
I hope this works cause I've been trying to learn how to apply clothing to avatars and a recent tutorial was about 35 minutes long and that still didn't help me. Praying this does cause I wanna create my own OC! ❤❤❤❤
im having one problem when i merge the jacket leaves Tpose well my model stays how would i fix that to keep the jacket im trying to adds sleeves to stay lined up with my arms
I did it like you suggested, but unfortunately, my avatar with the new clothes only has the T-pose, and I can't move my arms. Could you help me with this?
Sometimes exporting will cause the rig to re-do, you may need to set it back to humanoid and go to the rigging menu inside there you need to click "enforce tpost" and then hit "apply"
Question since I am rather slow What if I pick up clothes that is already rigged to a certain base but I really wanna use it on another Avi? And it does have clothes rigged for physics (like long sleeves that sways in the wind) but its connected to the base rig (the skeleton) And where could you find a good collection of non-rigged clothing?
If they aren't rigged/made for your current base you will need to redo the rig as for parts such as straps, I personally remove everything that would be a bone not in the rig, then add it after you can also merge those bones to the base armature and then data transfer them to themselves. and as for "non rigged" not many will be good as they will most likely be high poly / not game ready my suggestion is looking for free outfits on gumroad and using those, there are a ton of egirl / eboy clothing sets that are given out for free!
so i did all the steps but am unable to upload the avatar due to two models in the unity. im unsure on how to fix it if you could please let me know what i have to do.
just curious the camera will only let me zoom in on the feet anyone can tell me how i can sort this (the smallest vide i can find on it is 18 mins, which i refuse to watch)

This might be a dumb question, but whenever I merge both armatures and then upload the fbx file to Unity, all the textures on the avatar are missing. Do you know what the problem is?
my viseme sil is gone for some reason. The field is there in lipsync but i cant select it cause the v_sil is just gone, If i try to copy my other avatars blendshape options it cuts its head off. any clue why?
This is because SIL is an empty shape key, and for some reason CATS likes to remove it. You can easily go into it, make a new shapekey, call it SIL, and export

@@PxINKY I..have, and nothing completely transfers over, only the Phys bones and not models you added, thought I did found a a way to make it better. You just grab your avatar from the hierarchy and drag it into the assets place making it a prefab, then grab the same model you got from 3d (in this context say you added clothes) then go to prefab, there two options there's one for keeping the avatar the same but transferring everything else onto the new Avi (not including textures for some thingd like the main avatar model). Or replacing it entirely without the editz go with the other one and test it out if it works. That's how I do it without pumpkins Stuff

The avatar remains "gray" it is not as it should be usually ... Because I did all as on the video (which is very well explained) but at the end to make the avatar identical to the basic one by adding the garment I have to do how? (sorry I'm starting in Blender)

Uh, i hope you realize that when making this, using C.A.T.S actually doesn't combine the two pieces, its kind of more of a flat layer as if you tried to add something in unity, it isn't connected at all, it just floats, this also adds a lot of unnecessary armature bones to your avatar
i dont know if you have been using cats correctly then when i used to use it i have zero issues close to what you mention. But i use VRCFury armature link religiously now anyways, this is an older tutorial for a reason :P
When i go to merge armatures i see you unchecked join meshes and left the other one on but i have a checked box that says cleanup shape keys. should i uncheck that or leave it alone? please and thank you
My video was using an older version of cats, yours is the dev version, the clean up shape keys is for merging meshes with unused / useless shape keys, if you are applying clothing, then leave this unchecked

@@PxINKY So far with blender, nothing.... but I figured out that with some clothes the Modular Plugin can put them on easily in Unity. :D

one issue i have with this method is that it doesnt seem to work with clothes that have blendshapes, which is kind of necessary for most clothes
You will need to edit your blendshape animations manually, ill look into making a video on this

whats if u need to resize sweater, how or diffrent parts of sweater :P how u do that :P
if the sweater wasnt specifically made for the avatar, you will need to use blender!

What should i do if the avatar is in format ".prefab"? How i can import it to blender?
.prefab is only a prefab built with the FBX, if you keep looking in the folders you will find the .FBX file
I used the cats plugin (2.93) and when I merge armatures the clothings weightpaint completely disappeared is there a reason for this?

thats due to export settings
you need to export your avatar to the size it actually uses
aka try "all local" if no work, try "fbx all"

If you unpacked your avatar then you may have broken it. You will need to remake the prefab

You may just need to manually reapply them. Super easy fix

Unfortunately cats is broken right now for merging bones so would strongly recommend not using
