I changed the spark plugs on my DOHC Subaru EJ engine last year in about 5 minutes... because I had the engine pulled to redo the headgaskets! Great stuff as usual Brian.
I recently just bought a 99 Subaru Legacy outback and was quoted about $1200 to change the fuel filter and do a tune up. After watching some Of your videos I think I can probably get it done myself. Thanks!
Thanks for putting these videos up, man! You made me realize how easy it is to work on my Outback. You're going to save me alot of money after I get some simple tools.
QUICKTIP: This goes for ALL vehicles, before you completely remove the sparkplug and expose the cylinder hole, clean the area with a rag then shopvac to ensure no little rust particles or dirt pieces end up in your engine. This will also prevent stuff getting in your engine when you're blindly trying to thread in the new sparkplug.
It would be tough to answer here, but there are MANY illustrations of firing orders even on rotary motors here on RUclips. On most 4 cylinders the two ends and two outer pistons go together at opposite intervals of the other two. On most v6 and v8 engines they're balanced per length and side *(bank)
Oldy but goody! Thanks for this dude, I've been watching a lot of your videos in the past couple years and I love both your presentation and your honesty. You seem like a cool guy ta boot! Keep up the good work.
Thx for this video, my son just got the exact same Subie. Now, here's a tip for you: Get yourself a set of MAGNETIC spark plug sockets. You'll never drop a plug again!
Brian, you are the man. I know you hear this a lot, but could you please make more Legacy (preferably 06 and up) videos. Anything that your customers ask you to do on their Legacy's, just film it and upload. Your videos are much appreciated.
Good to know! It's funny- Bombardier four wheelers just didn't sell well in the US till they changed the name to CAN AM and now they are a highly preferred brand.
The ones with bends work just fine. The wire should leave the coil and go straight down. The bend wires go on the side with clearance to go straight down.
Brian, you make the job look double.I am thinking about putting a K&N air filter so I get rid of all that plastic junk. You answered my questions on how to exhaust side. Thanks!
hey Brian. Just replaced my spark plugs on my 2001 outback H6. I used this video as a reference although its an H4 thats there. Also for anyone else out there, if your doing the spark plugs and wires on the H6 (EZ30, EZ30D) just a comment that its very tight getting the coils out.
briansmobile1 Your videos are so informative, and very much appreciated. RUclips needs more channels like yours. Knowledge is power. I've got an 06 WRX, 2.5L Turbo, 42k miles, that has been giving me some headaches. The codes thrown are P0340(CPS Bank A) and P0016(crankshaft correlation) I dropped it off at the garage down the street from my work that 'specializes' in Subaru's. He supposedly checked timing and swapped out the CPS sensor, I think he just reset the ECU. A day later, lose power at ~4KRPM and engine takes 5seconds of cranking to start. I replaced the crank sensor and checked timing on just the drivers side(didn't have time for the other side) and am still having the same problem, same codes. Now that it's getting cold out, it will fall flat on it's face and die if I don't let it warm up for 5 minutes. The CEL is intermittent, sometimes will go away for 3 days, but always comes back. Car runs fine other than that. I thought it skipped a tooth and will be getting both covers off tomorrow to properly check timing. If you have a spare minute to brainstorm, what might be causing this? I'd really appreciate any insight. Thanks and keep up the educational videos!
Usually an intake will come with a section of hose/pipe to accept your MAF sensor or instructions on how to reuse the stock piece. I know the K&N Typhoon intakes for WRX come with a new MAF pipe.
Good call! I have several I could epoxy in. I think I will. I'm a bit tool sore. I spent over $1000 in new tools this month. I'm going back to making them for a while!
Great video man, I have a 2015 legacy has little cricket squeaks I noticed when letting it warm up. They are kind of random they are definitely there more than not, it seems after I have been driving for a while if I get out and just keep the car on pop the hood it sounds smooth most of the time after it’s been driving for a while. But at the same time since I’ve heard this sound I’ve noticed a performance difference I’m still getting proper response when I hit the gas it just feels like somethings different. It’s got 70k miles someone said it could be my belt tension but that thing feels tight to me? I usually take it to the Subaru dealer to get maintenance, I’ve done many oil changes brakes as well as axles and suspension on my Acura I just worry tryin to do the spark plugs myself or replace the tension belt myself but I’m going to buy new tires so not trying to drop a couple grand there at once ya know any idea what the squeak might be? And how difficult is this for someone who isn’t a mechanic but can follow instructions very well?
Your video is very good and your explanation to the point. One thing (not a criticism, but a suggestion), you could try using a front band attached to the camera, on your forehead. That would give you full control on both hands. Thanks again.
u are so awesome...thank u...I love that I just saw a comment u made saying u love to see ppl become more empowered...I'm a single mama n try to learn n fix car stuff myself (rather than have ten men step in with 7different opinions telling me wat to do...assuming I don't know squat...assuming I have money & time to waste on theyr guesses :/) I just love watching & listening to u...u sound like my uncle iwho used to work on cars I lost last year...he also cared about ppl ...love the red ;)
briansmobile1 is yours a single cam or DOHC? I have to do the plugs on the passenger side on my '99 25D and I'm pretty sure the DOHC are straight in, not angled
I have gotten rubber stuck in a spark plug channel and removing it is NOT FUN. And it was the stupid rubber boot from the spark plug socket. The 30 minute plug job on my fiancee's Civic turned into about a 3 hour ordeal, when you count the time we spent searching for a tool adequate enough to pull it out. Given its small mass, I got some pretty good distance on that little rubber plug when I threw it, though. :)
You should rig up a hat camera mount that way you can use both hands and the camera will be pointed wherever your looking. Then you can use a separate camera to get the close ups and edit the two camera views later. The newer windows movie maker is actually a great video editor tool and works great for mixing video clips. Great video keep em coming!
Took my plug boots out last night, but didn't turn them more than, let's say 90 degrees. Then I saw this video tonight. Should I worry about my 2002 TS wagon? I've got the valve cover off, since there was oil in the plug wells, and I'm about to change out the gaskets and tube seals. Any advice? A little debris landed on tubes when I took the cover off. Any concerns? I wiped it off with a paper towel best I could.
you need a spark plug socket with a magnet in there , ive got one and i tell ya its soo much better than a spark plug socket with a rubber boot inside which once oil gets onto it swells and is then deemed useless :)
@1ownjoo2 I've never experienced that with GMB pumps myself, but I've heard of them leaking grease on break in. I did install one once that was missing the seal all together. Crap happens.
hi brian, no its a liberty sedan, i think liberty was just before legacy but please dont quote me on that .anyhow thanks for replying so quickly and for the advice I ll definately have a look at the fuel pump and strainer thanks again and take care
chromed sparkplugs contain a special coating and Subaru does not recommend using antisieze on those type of plugs. The coating is designed to keep plugs from sticking to the threats. Only black uncoated plugs should use antisieze. You can read it yourself on the Subaru Website under Mechanics bulletins. Thankyou.
I just have a question about getting the boots out. I twisted them ccw well past 180 degrees and when I go pull the boots, there is some resistance instead of them just easily pulling out. I just wanted to make sure this is normal before I start pulling them with a little more force?
Hey brian how do I change the spark plug wire, changed the spark plugs but didn't change the writes at the same time... Is it still the same motion for removing the wire to change the spark plug??
Glad you asked! If you use a vacuum cleaner and the intake valve in the engine is open, you will suck fuel/air mixture into your vacuum cleaner. The electric motor in the vacuum has brushes which arc much like a spark plug and....kaboom! Trust me, this has happened (not to me)!
Hey Brian... love your videos, every word out of your mouth is a good tip instead of some stupid bs .. I have a question for you. I have a 2007 2.5 SOHC. Are platinum plugs ok to use or should I stick with the original kind?
hey Brian could you perhaps tell me what weight of transmission and rear differential fluid a 1997 subaru outback 2.5 manual transmission takes? thanks you if you could
Hello Brian, I have a 97 Subaru legacy outback wagon that was getting around 19 - 20 mpg going back and forth to work mainly freeway plus some in town driving but in the last couple weeks my mileage has gone down. What would be a possible cause of fuel mileage to suddenly change. I appreciate any advice you may be able to give.
hey Brian im a big fan love the way you explain everything step by step, I have a 2003 Subaru Legacy non turbo I see that you just did the air filter and the for spark plugs is that all I need to do for a tune-up on my Subaru because on a Honda I did the filter spark plugs and PVC I don't know if the Subaru has that please let me know whatever I need to buy so I can do it thank you very much and have a good day..
On Subaru's, the PCV is easily cleanable. Remove it, soak it in carb cleaner, and shake it a bit to see if the valve inside moves freely. It is all metal, no rubber parts to worry about ruining with cleaners.
hi i would like to cleaning throttle body on my impreza 2011 engine 2.0r but i wonder if i remove lose the mapping and after i need to remapping with a scanner or its safe to remove
hi brian, i got a bad batch of fuel a few weeks ago and my 92 subaru liberty started stuttering farting and stalling i replaced the fuel filter and did a tune up on it and put fresh fuel and injector cleaner in but its still stuttering and farting and stalling by stuttering and farting i mean i accelarate and i get no response and ithe car bunny hops for a few secs before responding any idea what it is. i would be tremendously grateful on how to fix it
Hello Brian, I would like to do a full tune up on my 2008 Legacy 2.5 (non turbo). Can you please list the parts needed beyond the PCV valve, Fuel/air/oil/cabin filters and spark plugs? Also, is there a front differential on a 5 speed manual trans? Do you recommend factory tune up parts or aftermarket? Thank you very much, your videos are very helpful!
BRIAN I NEEED HELP!!!!! I hav a 2002 impreza wrx. And i put a new cold air intake ... the cone style k&n but the flow sensor plug has no where go now and my dash flashes trans oil temp light on my dash what do i do

Thank you for taking the time to film even the little things. Your knowledge is a treasure that must be shared. :)
Omg thank you ! Finally a video that does not draw out like a blade ! 🙄 precise to the point and good camera manipulation ! Thank you good job Sir
Thanks for putting these videos up, man! You made me realize how easy it is to work on my Outback. You're going to save me alot of money after I get some simple tools.
One of the few Americans who appears to know what he is talking about. Keep it up.
The entire rest of the car is spotless though. Detail kit in the trunk and everything.
@reap62 Yes it is a boxer- not coil over. Those are the sexy upgraded ones. ; )
QUICKTIP: This goes for ALL vehicles, before you completely remove the sparkplug and expose the cylinder hole, clean the area with a rag then shopvac to ensure no little rust particles or dirt pieces end up in your engine. Kevin Devine That is an extremely important tip that is too often overlooked
Yes. And one on the drivers side front strut tower. Newer ones just have a strainer in the tank.
It would be tough to answer here, but there are MANY illustrations of firing orders even on rotary motors here on RUclips. @1ownjoo2 It's up to you man. I would clean it with brake parts cleaner and compressed air and give it a week of service and then look again.
Keep up the Subaru vids, they help me maintain my machine.
@Cattachmore22 Wow. I don't know what I did, but it seems you liked it. Thanks.
hey Brian. Just replaced my spark plugs on my 2001 outback H6. I used this video as a reference although its an H4 thats there. Also for anyone else out there, if your doing the spark plugs and wires on the H6 (EZ30, EZ30D) just a comment that its very tight getting the coils out.

Thank you! Most people are good. It's good to see them become more empowered.
I would! But I'd also use it very sparingly. No one does the 15K mile thing- though I would think it would be pretty effective.
Usually an intake will come with a section of hose/pipe to accept your MAF sensor or instructions on how to reuse the stock piece. I know the K&N Typhoon intakes for WRX come with a new MAF pipe.

Your belt tension may be off. (loose) It depends on the squeal. I've heard Subaru's squeal from the main bearings, belts, and from the exhaust.
Great video man, I have a 2015 legacy has little cricket squeaks I noticed when letting it warm up. +Auntie Nook THANK YOU!!!!
+briansmobile1 HUG!
I really wish you lived nearby because I think you might be the only honest mechanic in America. Just kidding, but good mechanics are hard to find.
Thanks for the great tip on turning those wires 180+ degrees. Awesome video ( like always) :)
To change the plug wires you twist the ends back and forth and then pull while you continue to twist back and forth.
Just the fact that you have a Ron Paul for President poster on your wall is good enough for me.
+Jessica Mast Thanks Jessica!
briansmobile1 is yours a single cam or DOHC? I have to do the plugs on the passenger side on my '99 25D and I'm pretty sure the DOHC are straight in, not angled
What about his BYU football shirt?
Dude, I'm from Australia but have seen enough to Rate Ron Paul as one of the best politicians USA has!

Thanks for heads up on the little things (grease, no seize). Little things help.
I'm afraid I don't understand the procedure you're proposing that would remove mapping.
Thank you brian for all this time helping others
You are keeping my Forester in top shape! Thanks for posting!
It depends on the plugs you're using. Irridium last 100K miles double platinum 60K miles copper 30K miles. Factory plugs are platinum.
I like Denso or NGK plugs. Factory stuff is fine.
That's normal and sometimes the ends stay in. Just fish them out with a pick and or compressed air.
Hi Brian can you explain how to understand fire order and how they go on the cylinder, 4 cylinder 6 or 8 are the same?
@Bonfield2002 Blankity blank A+ if you drive in sand, snow, piles of zombies etc. They just GO!
@trunitemare Sure. I don't see why not.
Thanks for all of these great videos dude you've helped me and I'm sure plenty of other people out allot
Took my plug boots out last night, but didn't turn them more than, let's say 90 degrees. Then I saw this video tonight. Should I worry about my 2002 TS wagon? You're welcome- great to hear from you!
Get it on a scanner and watch the MAF and the air/fuel trim.

Just replaced all my spark plugs today, pain of a job but it mustve had a pretty bad misfire before cause it feels way faster and smoother now
Thanks! I love the Ron Paul sign in the background.

doing plugs and wires today, thanks for the tips Brian.
lots of good tips, great. Overall how would you rate subaru since you work on a lot of them.
Thanks for your efforts, appreciate the tips about dielectric and anti seize, very helpful video.
It should be threaded in or clipped in. Ultimately you'll just need to find a way to remove it and install it in the new plumbing.
@1ownjoo2 I've never experienced that with GMB pumps myself, but I've heard of them leaking grease on break in. I did install one once that was missing the seal all together. Crap happens.
Welcome olly- great to hear from you!
thaks for your video and all instructions and tips, good luck dude
Took the Soob in to the dealer last week for the 2nd Takata airbag recall. I swear, it's just an opportunity for them to upsell service jobs.
hi brian, no its a liberty sedan, i think liberty was just before legacy but please dont quote me on that .anyhow thanks for replying so quickly and for the advice I ll definately have a look at the fuel pump and strainer thanks again and take care
What a great guy, great vid. Cheers from Manchester, England
@CURBECK THANKS! I should do that! I like the sooner or later vid you did. Was that with Windows movie maker?
coolest guy on the planet
Sounds like you're on the right track.
this video was really helpful to me thanks bro, can you make another video about power steering pump on the same subaru legacy 07
Can you put out a list of tools needed for the job

Permatex Anti-Seize Lube!!!! I bought some a month ago because you recommended woohoo!!!! Eclipse-->tuned.
I just have a question about getting the boots out. I twisted them ccw well past 180 degrees and when I go pull the boots, there is some resistance instead of them just easily pulling out. I just wanted to make sure this is normal before I start pulling them with a little more force?
Ok, I'm used to tuning up my old Chevy's. We've gone Subaru, so is there a distributor? I'm assuming no as Briam didn't mention one. Ty.
Do you have a video on how to clean the iac valve.
Hey brian how do I change the spark plug wire, changed the spark plugs but didn't change the writes at the same time... Is it still the same motion for removing the wire to change the spark plug??

I have to put struts on my 2003 WRX. Do you have a video for that?
Thanks
can you use that grease to take out the spark plugs? Cus I am having a difficult time taking out my spark plugs. My socket gets stuck.
Hey Brian... love your videos, every word out of your mouth is a good tip instead of some stupid bs .. I have a question for you. I have a 2007 2.5 SOHC. Are platinum plugs ok to use or should I stick with the original kind?
hey Brian could you perhaps tell me what weight of transmission and rear differential fluid a 1997 subaru outback 2.5 manual transmission takes? thanks you if you could
*Legacy? It's not a Jeep right? It sounds like you may need to replace the fuel pump and strainer under the back drivers side seat.
Hello Brian, I have a 97 Subaru legacy outback wagon that was getting around 19 - 20 mpg going back and forth to work mainly freeway plus some in town driving but in the last couple weeks my mileage has gone down. @hateercenor Ya, but sure doesn't have to be. Straight is better. I mutilated mine into another tool I made.
Just did the plugs in my 02 Outback. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks dude!!! Love your channel btw its helped me out alot! That plug though .. Its molded in... recommend me cutting it out? Can i buy one...
my 2004 2.5 has valve chatter what causes that. cool vids thank you.
You're welcome Nick!
@briansmobile1 are you wearing a BYU football shirt?? Wow this just made my day.
hi i would like to cleaning throttle body on my impreza 2011 engine 2.0r but i wonder if i remove lose the mapping and after i need to remapping with a scanner or its safe to remove
Thanks
hi brian, i got a bad batch of fuel a few weeks ago and my 92 subaru liberty started stuttering farting and stalling i replaced the fuel filter and did a tune up on it and put fresh fuel and injector cleaner in but its still stuttering and farting and stalling by stuttering and farting i mean i accelarate and i get no response and ithe car bunny hops for a few secs before responding any idea what it is. i would be tremendously grateful on how to fix it
Hello do you have a video showing how to change the transmission oil on a 08 Subaru Impreza i2.5?? 👍
Auto or Manual?
Hello Brian, I would like to do a full tune up on my 2008 Legacy 2.5 (non turbo). Can you please list the parts needed beyond the PCV valve, Fuel/air/oil/cabin filters and spark plugs? Also, is there a front differential on a 5 speed manual trans? Do you recommend factory tune up parts or aftermarket? Thank you very much, your videos are very helpful!
BRIAN I NEEED HELP!!!!! I hav a 2002 impreza wrx. And i put a new cold air intake ... the cone style k&n but the flow sensor plug has no where go now and my dash flashes trans oil temp light on my dash what do i do
Needing to change a ECT sensor on a 2007 Subaru Tribeca ( P0117 ) and don't know the location on the engine. Also, we are having trouble with a solenoid (shifting) on the transmission going out for the 3rd time, why?
Thanks.
*intake air temp sensor??? Drill a hole- pull the sensor out of the old plumbing and insert it. You're car uses that as a standard.
Nice summary, Brian.
