@DP02806 Common leaks include Cam and crank seals. Rear piston wrist pin access covers. Oil pan gasket. Valve cover gaskets. You can pull the transmission to get to the rear engine leaks. I've done that before.
Thank you! I used liquid teflon and let it dry for a day. Between the new air filter, new spark plugs/wires, new PCV valve, newer refurbished battery, dielectric greasing of everything I could/should, replacing all fuses, changing the fuel filter, restoring the headlights plastic, changing the oil/oil filter, oil drain plug and washer, cleaning the brakes, changing the inner and outer tie rods, cleaning the MAF sensor, and putting a bottle of engine/cat cleaner in gas tank and doing some long periods of highway driving, it's like a whole different car! Next I want to do the transmission fluid/filter, gear oil, then everything brake related, and cleaning of oxygen sensors after I get some crows foot wrenches. Then windshield replacement and repainting car. My first car repairs/maintenance, it's going really well. Just a note to random people, I didn't need to disconnect fuel pump connection to change fuel filter, I wore eye protection and had a drip pan but nothing sprayed out.
Thank you Brian! Learning how to do basic upkeep and maintence with my 2002 Outback and I've making lists of projects and things to do just to monitor and observe adjustments and etc. I love learning all the different tips and tricks people have offered and watching this was cool to learn about teflon tape and how it works etc. For a dude that only knows how to do an oil change, it seems pretty fun fixing up and tuning my car. While I try to mend a weird CEL IACV issue, I plan on doing a number of tune ups while I'm operating and PCV valve is one of them and this video helped me out a lot. Thanks again!
excellent video! I've been told changing the PCV valve on a Subaru 2.5 is more important than usual due to high pressure build up causing head gaskets to fail. I have a 2007 Impreza OBS with 74,000 that now has an external head gasket leak. I didn't know where to find the PCV valve but thanks to your video I can change it on my own and hopefully prevent any future disasters.
@transdetendal You know I meant to narrate that and forgot! It's P.ositive C.rankcase V.entilation. You're pistons are moving at a high rate of speed and there would otherwise be an imbalance in air flow within the motor. To balance that you have hoses from your valve covers and to the air filter box so air can rotate through the engine and not create aerodynamic drag from piston movement.
I don't know. All I show is a part number of PCV1278 for it on the gas engine 3.7L. They are usually in the valve cover on most vehicles. You can find it by following an air hose from the air filter box to the valve cover. Some are integrated into the upper intake manifold.
I just diagnosed and replaced a PCV hose with a huge hole for a customer of mine. It was on a 2003 Ford Focus. Engine was running horribly and I could hear the vacuum leak, but just couldn't see it. I found a small hole on a smaller hose (for the evap), but was pretty impressed to find the PCV hose with a collapsed portion right next to the intake manifold. Hose was just absolutely rotten.
I just plugged it up and ran the other side to a vented catch can. I could not believe how much blow by this thing catches. Glad this is not getting recycled into my manifold anymore.
Thanks for the straight foward information! I'm very fed up with blasting music, long winded, gut wrenching idle talk which makes learning so freaking difficult!
Huzzah! Thanks to your instruction, I got mine off though it still has some rattle to it. I might as well put the new one in and spray out the old with carb cleaner and keep it for backup. The spring clamp was quite a pain compared to yours as I needed pliers to clear the barb on the valve but it felt good to get it done. Next up, oil filter proving difficult to remove by hand and I cant find my claw... For any newcomers, I am working on an 06 Tribeca and the valve is tucked under another tube running parallel and to get a ratchet in I had to remove the battery.
Your the best I put as much as I can to my GC8 WRX MY99 JDM it’s the only version we get here in Australia and I can’t find not much detailed videos like you and I have been binge watching you for weeks thank you heaps cheers from down under Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
Dittos! Great video..sound /voice good, and no goofy music. You make it look very doable. ..my afternoons business is replacing the upstream O2 sensor. I am pretty sure the engine you are working on is the same as my '06 forester. THANKS AGAIN!
@transdetendal Wikipedia have a great description of the history of the PCV system and how it all works. It's basically a system designed to recycle blow-by gasses that get past rings and into the crankcase. Old (1950's) cars just had a breather tube that allowed those hydrocarbons to drip and vent to atmosphere. But those gasses account for almost a majority of pollution from vehicles, so GM invented the PCV system and shared it with all....
awesome vid very helpful. I am a novice at fixing cars and my 93 prizm is very straight forward. my moms subaru looks like a horrid scary mess to me. thanks for showing me where the pcv goes!
@ShoeManShoe68 I had a Catalytic Converter Code and a Knock Sensor code and replacing the Knock Sensor cleared both. The Catalytic Converter threw a code first P0420, the knock sensor showed up later P0325. I was really surprised how much better the car ran. This was on a 2000 Impreza 2.5rs (175k miles). I think I would replace the Knock Sensor($80-130), PCV valve($2-10), and Front O2 sensor(~$150) on any used Subaru I pick up. As of now I've replaced all three and the car is running well.
i watched the video.helped alot.i have 2008 impreza...follow hose down to bottom its located there...19mm deep sockets is needed....took me about 15 minutes to replace...
awesome vid man, love your work. will be doing this as a quickie project while having a beer for my 04 forester xt this weekend. just hoping its all in the same place as your vid. cheers.
Not really. It comes out pretty well- and besides teflon tape's properties won't hurt anything in the cylinder head or exhaust unless there's TONS of it going through.
Thanks for the video. Just need to find out how to change the engine air filter on this engine. There is a plastic hard tube underneath that doesnt have any give to it to be able to pry it out of the way after you released the 2 clamps holding the air box together.
Welcome! If you pry the PCV hose off the airbox first with a prybar where the hose meets the box it's way easier. If it's too hard/brittle from age, do it when the engine is warmed up or used a blow drier to soften it up first. ruclips.net/video/g50We_KggGE/видео.html
So many cars I've seen oil on air filters! Simple answers like this are the best. I think I'll be fixing this problem on my car and probably six others that come to mind. Family and friends, lol.
Hi Brian! Love your videos btw! I changed my pcv valve today, it was in a terrible condition. the condition of the cables was Scary, so much dirt is inside. Can you please show us how to clean manifold and how to clean pcv valve cables. btw, now my idle rpm wend down under 1K, before change it was over 1K. I think when i was trying to clean tubes ///I might have clogged them instead. Please enlight :) Thank you!
2011 Forester manual says to use red Three Bond, the equivalent of Permatex red thread bond. No way. Sounds like a good way to really cause a problem for future removal. High temperature silicone seal is a better recommendation.
Hi just being helpful you should specify the year on this video, it is only in that location for up to 99 models, 2000 and up its on the block, the peice on the intake is just a straight tube :)
3000 / 4 (cylinders) =750 which is about right for idle speed. Is this for a racing tach or something? You have switch settings for # of cylinders. Select one. Like for a motorcycle.
Thanks for sharing your video. I took the hose off and used the 19mm socket to unscrew the valve, but the base is turning instead of the valve unscrewing. Is there something special I have to do to get it to unscrew?
Thanks for information, specially the fact is a 19 mm Deep Socket. I will try using a regular open ended 19mm (I don't have the money for the other one). One advice (from experience: do not use your hand's palm to force like you showed. I developed (in both hands) the Duprei syndrome (Google it) and had to be surgically operated. Again, it would be nice to know - before the repair - the inner diameter of that hose, so it can be replaced with a larger one (to make for the right loop, without chocking it), but much cheaper than the Subaru's original one. Thanks, again.
Hey Brians, I hope u can help me. Where is the PCV Valve on my JETTA 2000 Vr6 / 12v. I do a little of research, and some people that the PCV is with the AIR INTAKE TUBE, is this TRUE?. So if I want to change the PCV Valve, I have to Change all the AIR INTAKE TUBE?. Thanks for this Videos...
Confused how a one-way airflow threads into the intake manifold, usually the PCV Valve is near the crankcase. So my question is, is the PCV Valve on our Subaru's more like an inlet manifold valve? How can I be sure the valve airflow is the correct way. Other Subaru models have the PCV Valve threaded into the crankcase, while some others have it threaded into the intake manifold.
Brian - great site - i have subscribed. I have a 1996 Subaru legacy with only 130K. Body is starting to rot through and the engine, which has been leaking a bit of oil for the past 6 yrs, is now leaking furiously (1 qt/wk). My mechanic tells me "everything is leaking". While the oil pan gasket is out of my league (I can't pull the engine out), I can do the valve covers without much trouble. Are there any other gaskets that might be leaking that I can change without pulling the engine?
i know what you mean but your not that boring to watch,ha ha ,i quite injoy it but yesterday was a drag, out looking for a new ride cus my knee was busted almost 2 years ago and cant walk far ,so got a 93 peugeot cheap and hope it holds a while
hey brian, I think I have diagnosed my WRX's problem to be the TPS. Would you be so kind as to post a video about replacing the Throttle Position Sensor on 2 liter turbo subaru motors? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
Brian, could the bad/dirty PCV cause a P0026 code? I have a 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0R with 173K miles. The check engine light came on yesterday, then 5 minutes later, the cruise control light came on, and now blinks. I cleared the code, but it came back today. Please let me know what you think. Great videos! Thanks.
I'm not sure if the PCV could trigger that code, but you can grab a PCV valve for under $10 from ebay and swap it out in around 10 minutes. Even if it's completely unrelated to your problem, it's a good idea to do.
S L If you have the problem after the install, then you need to go back and verify the repair. Some aftermarket PCV under perform. Ericthecarguy won't install non Honda PCVs for example because they don't do the function right. Most people I've talked to have been fine with a cheap PCV, but maybe your car is an exception like Eric's experience with Honda. The other video I saw with an issue after a PCV install was because the owner didn't resecure the rubber hose. The problem was a vacuum leak. when the P in PCV or positive pressure isn't happening, it pulls vacuum on that same hose, so if it's not attached you'll have vacuum leak symptoms.Much higher LTFT at higher RPM will develop. It will nearly correct at lower RPM.
Sometimes cars won't unlearn "the fix" or the compensation they're doing for what's wrong after it's fixed. Thank you for your input. My car want acting fixed after the last fix either until reset.
Excellent video Brian. Have you ever worked on any Alfa Romeos? My 79 spider is a completely different ball game from any vehicle I've worked on. Odd vehicles!
I have a question about the PCV valve system on a 2002 Saab 9-5, I found the actual part that goes into the valve cover but even new, its hollow. Is it possible that Saab makes an in line pcv valve?
My recently purchased 98 subaru outback doesn't have that vacuum hose you moved out of the way at the beginning of this video....just an exposed "nipple." Can you provide any insight as to where that hose should connect to from there?
Hey Brian I own a 2002 Subaru Legacy and I wanted to know your thoughts about my problem. My car recently has had sluggish take-offs and sometimes at low rpm (seems to be occuring more often now) starts to jerk and act like it is not getting fuel or losing fuel pressure what do you suggest? I recently changed the plugs and the fuel filter thanks to your videos. any help you could give would be much appreciated.
***** I cleaned the MAF and the throttle body a swell. I have no more rough idle but, I do get hesitation and the cars jerks when I go over 75 MPH or when I try to pass in the highway. What year is that Forester, Brian? All the other videos I'm seeing show the PCV valve located on the block, with the hose running from there to the intrake.
brian, throw a light under the engine when you are going to shoot a video -- it will make for less shadows and then we can see into the engine spaces better... :)

thank you so much Brian from 11 years ago!!!
For inexperienced mechanics, little tips such as the proper socket punch is great to know!

@Boasandpythons I have worked on a couple of them. They do things a bit different. It takes patience, but they're reasonable enough.
great video thanks I just went through this with 09 Forrester I used spary carburetor and throttle body cleaner didn't even need a new one
@texcali85 Of course it's possible. I don't know for sure. I wish I could tell you.
It may be different due to the different PCV design and additional emissions equipment.
Thanks for the how-to, got mine swapped out on my 98 Forester.
Hi Brian just changed my pvc valve THANK YOU for the video GOD BLESS
Appreciate the explanation of symptoms as I had oil vapors staining the air filter and could not figure why!
@R3dR1ot366 Sounds like either a contaminated Mass Air Flow Sensor or a failing ignition coil.
Thank you for this very articulate, detailed instruction!!
@ShoeManShoe68 That's decent for this area I live in. They're gold here because of the snow.
Use heat to get it to let go. From there you can separate it in the vice.
It doesn't have a conventional disposable in line filter. It only has the strainer in the tank.
Briansmobile/ thanks for the reply and the video. Its a shame how complicated engineers make theses newer cars....
car help AND karate advice! great video as always!
absolute handy vid thanks my 15 yr old teenager said it was spot on👍🎸

Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.
Very helpful video thanks.
good vid brian once again.
Why 5 dislikes i'll never understand
thanx! for video! Very helpful but still have check engine light on, i tough it was because PCV.
Nice way to change the PCV valve on subaru.
@R3dR1ot366 How many miles are on it?
Nice tutorial Brian.Would a failed pvc valve blow the seal on the oil seperator plate?
You're welcome!
Hey man thanks alot for this video
It's up!
Good job dude!
Very helpful, sir! Thank you
Just replaced mine. Estimated 25ftlbs for torque since I couldn't find it online.
If I was going to - I missed the boat today. I just put it all back together today. Sorry man. Bit too late.
