On a differential without a drain plug you usually remove the cover to drain. What is the purpose on this differential if the plugged drained 99% if the fluid? Unless you need to inspect something?
If it is a posi or limited sip it is a good idea to inspect it tosee how much clutch material is in the bottom of the housing specially if it has a lot of mileage on it.

was the plug replaced with a new a new one? seems like there was a little corrosion and a leak allready going on?
