    I feel blessed to have been a teen during Payton's prime. Why? Because since he was at one point a top 5 NBA player during the Jordan-era as kids we used to want to emulate some of our favorite players. The Glove was one of mine even though I'm from Chicago. But I used to try to play defense just like him. I played 90 feet. Soon as you inbound the ball I was there EVERY time. I can handle the ball like Jamal Crawford and get any where on the court due to my quickness but being 6 feet 160 at the time I obviously has limitations on the offensive end. So I said the only way I can turn my weakness into a strength was to be a dog on the defensive end. I wasn't a great thief but lock down defense on the perimeter was something I actually loved more than scoring or passing. I may not have been able to score on an NBA level but I'd be damned if I couldn't defend on on. I wanted to be the type of defender I hated playing against and that was a guy who never let you out of his site. One who knew how to switch on picks, one who just hounded you all game. If you could score on me, so be it but you would have to beat me with a jump shot. But as soon as you got the ball I was deep into my stance and giving up the left because I automatically know MOST right handed players struggle going to the left.

    I've always considered myself a good defender (in pickup ball) and interestingly I use the same "techniques", though I'm short and skinny, so I still can get abused under the basket *sigh*. But I don't fear nobody doesn't matter how much bigger he is, and love to stop guys who think can get past me at will. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't :)

    • @ThaDreamMerchant
      @ThaDreamMerchant 7 лет назад +8

      Same here fam. Most of the time in pick up ball, all it takes is a few possessions back and forth to figure out the guy you're guarding and you can do a pretty good job neutralizing him since most players don't really know how to adjust.

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад +2

      +revan renaldi Hip to hip is more pressure and will cause more turnovers or steal attempts but because of the close proximity you will also get beat for open lay ups. Between the basket will make it more difficult for one specific player to score but will allow him great opportunities to set up his teammates with passing angles

    I'm training to be a good defender. I watched all your videos Coach Mike, do you have any recommendations on practice drills to improve my defense?

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад

      +just dcdbro (justdcdbro) For lateral footwork and explosiveness, you can start with this drill: ruclips.net/video/5ICQD865aUU/видео.html . After you get the footwork down you can add a restraint like resistance bands to the waist or between the feet. Another level would be to get a ladder and do the same footwork movements but the change of direction controlled to a partner pointing. Thus you have to maintain your footwork due to a random stimulus. Next you have to work on your turn and run explosiveness and footwork. Here is a great video with some ideas for both lateral and change of direction: ruclips.net/video/YwGpAQVKfE8/видео.html . Although these drills in this video are good, you do have to add random stimulus and constraints to become better. These are the two foundational levels of lockdown defense, remember to remain in the lockdown defense stance when preforming the workouts. Hope this helps and always elect to guard the best player during pick up games. Coach Mike

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад +1

      +Aman Singh Watching the Mavs and realized they play the packline defense... aka the defense we played. Stop penetration and close out hard on shooters. Puts less pressure on bigs to defend the basket and more on the guards: a good decision when you have Dirk and Zaza as bigs

  • @johnl6115
    @johnl6115 8 лет назад

    hey +coach mike, thanks for the vid! I really enjoyed it. Any suggestions for guarding a guy with a quick first step -- would it be better to play between the basket and let him take mid range shots assuming he was an average shooter? Also, how would that advice change if he could shoot well in addition to having a quick first step?

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад +2

      +John L always make your opponent do the thing they are worst at. If it is mid range shots than I'm fine giving up those up. Analytically speaking you only need to be within 4-6 feet to decrease shooting percentage, that space should be all you need to defend against his first step while not giving up warm up shots. When closing out perform a Scottie Pippen closeout and assume the dribble instead of the shot. However if you are simply guarding a great player, whose offense is better than your defense, playing between the basket is the way to go. At this point he's going to score, you just have to make sure he isn't efficient in doing so; taking away layups is a great way to do this.

    • @johnl6115
      @johnl6115 8 лет назад

      +Coach Mike Thanks for the solid advice! I'll try implementing that next time.
      Also, I know as of now you're focused on posting videos where you analyze players but would you ever consider sometime down the line, posting drills we could practice to up our defensive game; say for example drills on improving footwork? Thanks again

      Only against tall sharpshooters or really quick ones with long range

    • @joejett5084
      @joejett5084 7 лет назад +1

      Basic basketball knowledge is that the best shot in the game is a layup. So GP strategy was to never give up a layup. This means he had to stay in front of his man like a shadow while keeping 1 hand active to interrupt passes or shots. While the other hand stayed in a position in which if the ball was dribbled, it would hit GP's hand.
      For sharpeshooters and really anybody, when playing D you have to stay within reach of them. If you can't reach out and touch the offensive player, you are too far away. If you get too close, the offensive player can just run past you or you are most likely fouling.
      Most guys are sharp shooters because they are wide open. GP didn't allow that. GP defense was like CP3 but he had John Wall's body.

    I need help, i get foul trouble a lot even though most my blocks and steals are clean. My coach also forced me to play hands up defense(i dont like hands up defense because my hands arent active so creative players can finish when im guarding them) but it is the only way i can play defense without foul trouble. (Btw i dont know if the ruling is different or not but im 12 and im in Asia)

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад

      +Hugo Philbert Still trying to work on the foul problem, the game is starting to be called tighter every where. Something that has helped my players before is playing less with the hands completely. In the lockdown stance the hands really aren't suppose to be out anyway. The only time we use our hands is when we beat an opponent to a spot and go for the steal. On the other hand I had a player that tried to get a steal every possession. He got a lot of fouls this way. The best defenders learn to lockdown a player for most of the time and only go for a steal when the team needs it. Hope this helps some. Keep up the hard work though. I'm sure you'll adapt

    Should I use the delayed steal technique when I'm guarding a good ball handler? I find that when I go for poke steals against a good ball handler I get burned.

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад +2

      If you're guarding a superior player, I would play more like Kawhi, between-the-basket, type of defense. Trying not to give up anything easy. But then again, Avery Bradley might disagree: ruclips.net/video/qnlq0oWNbwg/видео.html

      +Coach Mike what if i use both tactics? when a player is trying to do something fancy (like cross over or in and out move) i use the between-the-basket and when they drive in, i lunge my whole body to get the and constantly poking the ball. Is that a good tactic?

  • @d49796
    @d49796 8 лет назад

    i have a better drill that improves your defence but to be specific it improves foot work, leg movement speed, balance, makes your legs stronger, makes your back stronger, makes yo have more stamina (like my comment or reply if you like my drill)kinda dangerous but here it is you go to some kind of small apartment stairs with close together railings and then you run up the stairs backwards in a defensive position so being low and legs wide out and back straight and stuff. you try to do this as fast as possible and keep doing it. when you lose balance and are about to fall (dangerous part) you quickly hold your self up by the 2 railings of the stairs that are close enough for you to grab so it has to be in a small stair way or else the danger of it goes up by a lot so have your hands close to the railings to grab it if you fall i haven't fallen yet, so try it i have been doing it and i have seen great results :) t

      I like it! Although there are experts saying backward exercise are a gimmick: ( www.nytimes.com/1998/10/13/health/no-gain-in-backward-exercise-experts-say.html ) But I think it helps when it comes to defense. Working on hip mobility, coordination, backward movement pattern and strengthening the legs.

      +Naiem Salah Let me help you out there. Your main objective is to give your man space and if he tries to drive to the basket go back with him, you do not need to defend the backboard you need to defend your man you get it?

    • @LockdownDefense
      @LockdownDefense  8 лет назад

      solid explanation, thanks +Are You “You Mad” Mad Bruh?
      +Naiem Salah one of the things I will do when coaching a new team, if I notice they are looking back at the basket or at the baseline during a drill, is have them all close their eyes and point to the basket. I tell them not to worry, the basket will never move. Trust you know where you are on the floor.
