- You can find out more at t.co/7qB48wBLLp. Here I have a 1/4 sized Pacman Arcade machine from Numskull designs, which I've been sent because... Marketing. Sold under the Quarter Arcades brand (with more machines to follow), it's like an actual Pacman arcade cabinet, but smaller. The thing is? Does this concept work? Does it play well? Why am I playing a small pacman arcade cabinet? What is this life even about? Is this the arcade version of mini consoles? Pacman mini?
I presumed I didn't need to clarify the double meaning of quarter sized machines. As in you'd use a quarter to play them, and they're quarter size.... Clever stuff, ehhh? Well, unless you live somewhere else, like the UK, where it cost 10p to play. Then it doesn't work.
If you want one, grab it from t.co/7qB48wBLLp

So the screen scaling issues & sound look like they will be sorted for the final production machines. Numskull have put a video up showing the improvments... ruclips.net/video/9wRRvZcdD1s/видео.html
They haven't said anything about fixing the defaults, from 5 men and 15k extra, to 3 men and 10k, which is the standard arcade defaults.

Im a huge Pac Man collector. Been collecting anything Pac Man for years. I've got to have one. Thank You so much for sharing. I can't wait.
How do you like it? I want to get one
I should note I said this was 1/4 size. I meant 1/4 scale, which means that every measurement is a 1/4 of the original cabinet. Not, that's it's 1/4 of the size of the original cabinet.
Nostalgia Nerd I’m very glad as otherwise you’d be a big freak🦑!
1/4 scale is 1/64th volumetrically
@lassi It is 1/4 in each of 3 dimensions so it is divided by 4x4x4
@surfitlive Scale is independent from volume, while size is not. The problem is that a lot of people use these terms interchangeably when they really aren't.
To give you an idea of the actual difference in volume between the full size cabinet vs this 1/4th scale one, here's the actual figures (for simplicity's sake, I'm just calculating the cabinet as a perfect rectangle):
Original cab dimensions: 68"Hx25"Wx32"D
Total volume: 54,400 cubic inches
1/4th scale cab: 16.92"Hx6.3"Wx8.27"D
Total volume: ~881.55 cubic inches
881.55x4=3526.2 cubic inches
As a previous commenter mentioned, it's closer to 1/64th the size of the full cab. 54400/64=850.
Scale is noted with a colon, not a slash. That is 1:4, not 1/4
That thing is not a quarter of the volume of a full size cabinet. Not even a quarter of the area in the 3 axis.
You need to stack 4 in each direction to match, which would ammount to 64, making this miniature be 1/64 of the fullsized cabinet
That Sonic Hoodie is LIFE, love it!!
Just received my final production model. I’m pleased to report that the scaling and volume issues have been resolved. This thing is awesome. Can’t wait for the Ms. Pac-Man model coming out sometime next year.
Good to hear, gonna wait on more reviews to be sure
But yeah for me, im gonna get the Ms Pacman and Galaga
It was nice of Peter Dinklage to allow you to review his at home machine.
Thanks for sharing this look at that pacman cabinet.
It seems very well put together but at that size it's just a decoration, a nice one if you really like Pacman I'll give it that.
Numskull have some really good high quality key chains of miniature consoles. Pretty high detail in general.
Thank you - we've definitely upped the ante for the real deal!
Looks great fun. I will get one for my 1/4 sized self.
Best thing about this is it makes me feel like a giant!
Nostalgia Nerd: what's funny is that the first three ports of the game that managed to have all the patterns and tricks like the hiding spot work properly were on Palm OS, MS Pocket PC (both the original MS Pocket Arcade, and later re-release Namco at the time did through another company), and surprisingly the Neo-Geo Pocket Colour. Imagine having the first arcade-perfect (especially on later Colour Palm and compatible handhelds with proper audio hardware) ports of it and Ms. Pac-Man for Palm or Windows CE/Mobile that you can just slip into your pocket.
I want to look at Pac Man but there’s an original Mega CD on the screen. Oh the sliding drawer and multicoloured lights, pure joy.
Looks good. Now, just patiently waiting for it to arrive.
Who wants to bet that they stick all the ROMs in each device and then use a jumper or something to determine which game it "ships with"?
Jo Decker That’s definitely possible but isn’t t equally likely that they just flashed an eprom?
There alternatively might be a small humanoid inside with a library of cartridges and a cartridge slot.
There had better not be, there are clearly not enough air vents.
Lassi Kinnunen It probably does but these aren’t the same size volumes as some of the other retro stuff.
@voltare2amstereo Not sure what that has to do with how the ROMs are included on each cabinet... :s
You'll also need 1/4 sized cigs and beer.
🤣 I laughed at that for what I would describe as a socially awkward amount of time
I’m going to have my pac man 1/4 sized and my cigs & beer 4/1, it’s for the best.
the beer size must remain the same!
You can always get a 1/4 size vape-box to along with it .. he-he
Such a nice piece of retro kit.
4:48 shows you how crude the screen scaling is on the emulation. Some lines are double width. Also contrast is poor at acute angles. It’s a shame as this product lives and dies by the quality of the screen. Thanks for the review.
Yeah just what I was about to comment - good idea, but very poor execution on the screen. Cheap LCD so heavy light bleed, bad view angles... and the hideous raw pixel scaling, eugh
noticed that too
This is a near-final sample cab, but not the absolute final version. The scaling and some smaller cab casing details are still being fine-tweaked.
@@NumskullDesigns I'm very VERY happy to hear this, and hope it can be resolved before the final version! You'd make people incredibly happy if so!
I agree, this is likely a product for die hard fans and thus the screen scaling issues could be a real deal breaker. Hopefully you guys can find a more suitable display to use with the proper native resolution.
I don't know how can you play Pacman with one finger...now that's skills.
Our own Mini Namco Measum? Awesome
That bad scaling isn't acceptable imo. Shows that not much thought went into the choice of panel.
It's a small bummer, but in truth, the reason to get this is the nigh-perfect recreation of the cab itself as an art piece. The game is nearly secondary. I mean, how much time is anyone going to spend playing on this thing, anyway? There are certainly better (larger) ways to play Pac.
@@Mr.Pacario
Whilst I 100% agree, I'm sure that, being such low-power devices, people are going to want to leave things running in their demo modes on display, which the scaling issue will obviously affect.
Still a very minor issue that I personally would overlook.
@Thomas You raise an interesting point with the demo mode - I think I will probably just keep mine off as to help preserve the unit as long as possible. I do wonder if Numskull did intend this for constant, demo play. It's a good question.
It does look like most of the money and thought went into the wooden casing, Which works for me. Nice to have a proper pac-man collectible in-store, even if it is 200 bucks. It's really hard to scale down a game like Pac-Man with the proper ratio.
@ TheBack I agree. The attention to detail on the cab itself is pretty astounding, and the main draw. The fact the game plays as well as it does, and is the original ROM, is just icing on the cake.
For all the tech and the materials used to build it, no doubt bought in bulk, making it cheaper, the asking price is simply ridiculous. You could buy an old PC and emulate all your favourite arcade classics for a fraction of the price.
Judging from what he's shown, most of that money is going into the actual cabinet itself rather than the internals.
Hence why I also said "and the materials to build it". It is some wood, a few screws and some vynil. All bought in bulk. The price is ridiculous.
Products are not piles of materials. I assume you've calculated a BOM and the associated labor to assemble a relatively small quantity of 10,000 ... and that is how you came to the conclusion that it's "ridiculous"?
Indeed, Numskull states that it's making only a marginal profit on these units. The materials are high quality and largely handcrafted.
That looks bloody lovely
You blew my mind with that hiding spot
Clearly the money is going into the casing itself rather than the actual electronics, since it's pretty barren inside. Still, for $200 I'd at least expect an OLED screen instead of a TFT. Definitely not for me, but it's a nice conversation piece.
There's a guy online who makes mini arcades like this but much smaller and he charges $400 + shipping. Which people buy.
How does it compare to this as far as quality is concerned?
Not as high quality & much smaller but still really good handmade creations. He goes by arcadegum. $350 for most except his Punch-out which is $400. Free shipping my mistake. I'll never buy one at price but they look nice.
I can imagine the burn-in with an OLED left on for hours every day. It's something I'd leave on all day, but then again it's too pricey for me to justify buying.
You can fit 64 of those inside a real Pac man cabinet
I like the way how you make the video, Awesome !! :D
Reminds me of a similar doll-sized arcade machine sold off Walmart. Except that one is a little shoddier and ran off an NES-derived hardware.
I hope they're going to fix that screen resolution issue. Seeing some lines of pixels get doubled is just really ugly and noticeable to me. Then again, Pacman's original resolution is 224 x 288, and finding a screen that's either that resolution or an exact multiple of it isn't likely to be easy. I guess they could find one that's slightly bigger, and have the unused screen edges obscured behind the panels? I'd forgive the issue if it was a lot cheaper, but for £150 for a single game machine I'd expect that game to run _perfectly._ I was about to add "you may as well just buy an original", but then the first priced original I found was £3,300 😄 Thanks for the video though, it was really nice seeing one of these even if I'm not interested in buying one!
The scaling issue has been totally fixed for the release version. :)
Purchased Just arrived! A
This is the best thing I've seen I am a big fan of these games I am really foward to seeing a ms pacman cabniet.
The price makes sense when you remember that it's a high quality replica. It's for people who want an interesting decorative piece, not for people who want to play lots of old arcade games.
the non-pixel-perfect scaling would be the ultimate deal-breaker for me!
DJ Marchand agreed, it’d piss me off every time I played it. Although tbh I’m a fussy person and everything pisses me off.
Kinda cool. Thanks for opening it up. Love your videos.
OMG you just made me spent £150 I had no intention of spending! XD But that looks way better value for money than the £25 mini keyring cabinets currently doing the rounds. I just hope they stagger these a bit so I can "catch 'em all".
My parents lamented to me, as a kid in the 90s, that they didn't buy a Ms Pacman table-top arcade when it was for sale in the late 80s .... can you imagine it now? AHHH!!!!
I love it, but I'm already modifying my SF2 Arcade1up Cab to run everything! Still, this is quite lovely as I would bring this to work and play the hell out of this!
It would be fun to play for awhile but I'd probably get bored with it. I'm glad they used the arcade rom than the NES version.
That is cool as heck. I might have to pick one up.
Thanks - you totally should! :D
They are probably using the wrong type of potentiometer for the volume if you’re having that issue. Hopefully it’s fixed for the production run.
The sound, volume control, and scaling issues have been fixed for the release version. :)
Does it have dip switch settings to alter various things like the amount of pac-men you start with? Any time I've played a full-sized Pac Man, it's set to start with 3 lives, not 5.
6:55 that's a massive deal breaker. An integer upscale + bilinear upscale would have been much better and is the standard for upscaling pixel graphics to oddly sized displays.
The sound, volume control, and scaling issues have been fixed for the release version. :)
yay im a primordial dwarf and now I can play full size pac man...... ive waited sooooooooo long :)
Ordered !!! Can’t wait to receive mine 😊
Thanks very much! :D
4 hours is long enough to deploy the cabinet at an event like a birthday party. Having portable power and a small size means you're not as constrained in your deployment as a real cabinet. In fact, anywhere you can fit a small table you can deploy this machine.
Too bad they didn't use an IPS display, though. High-res IPS would have done a better job reproducing the CRT visuals. Especially if a good sub-pixel or CRT effect was used.
Cool PuckMan cabinet.
Philip Cooper it's Pac-Man. And yes I know that the original Japanese version was called Puck-Man. But this obviously isn't it.
*sigh
@@philipcooper8297 yeah I know, I typed "ths" instead of "this". I've corrected it now.
Should be $75 at the MOST!!
But then they cant pocket 100 bucks lol
A game disc is over $60 now. What kind of boomer thinks you can produce this and make a profit at $75?
i would like it to be 9.99
They took a whole pacman machine, shrunk it down and even gave it a light-up marquee. That's an engineering feat and money well spent for me.
You want it to feel better, just superglue a brick of metal to the bottom, it'll then be heavy, but harder to knock down.
$200 for Pacman?! Yeah, no!
same with that arcade1up trash at least this thing is more powerful
But think of all those dots you could eat...
arcade1up is crappy Ikea imitation arcade for casuals & children. This is a highly detailed mostly accurate miniature for collectors.
if too much there also the Phone Emulator,My Arcade and Tiny Arcade which are for the ppl with less money, and Pacman 1/4 is still TOO BIG.
heh
compared to an actual cab, both at the current used price and the original brand new price from 1980, this is nothing
The Beano and the Dandy. Yesss Dundee
I have an idea, throw enough quarters in it to make it the desired weight.
This explains why Peter Dinklage is selling a stool on ebay. (cue the defecation jokes)
This thing seems like a recipe for finger joint damage and eyestrain.
Is there any way to save the high score even after turning the machine off? Did the original arcade do the same also after turning it off, reset the high score?
I would be interested in the finished cabinet(s) alone. One could slide a large cell phone into the screen area and use a bluetooth gamepad.
Yeah, it's really about the authentically reproduced cab. The game itself is almost secondary. It's basically an art piece.
Thanks for the awesome review!
If Double Dragon was available with these cabinets then I would definitely throw some sterling’s their way.
Would be tight to play with two players though :)
Looks more like 1/8
Deceiving. But really, you're right. It's 1/4 height, which isn't really 1/4 size.
I've seen some of the other versions of this they look really cool in a way.
I love the background music
Smoooooth.
Wish they'd release miniature 1/4 sized Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World, Cruis'n Exotica, San Francisco Rush, Rush 2049, California Speed arcades.
those 3 wires are for a serial connection probably for programming the board
Now I'm curious if they make other arcade cabinets like this one.
Beezer, too. I think it originated there and is where I remember it from ;)
Now, if someone would only make a quarter-scale Bride of Pinbot...
They should have used a CRT. It would have made the experience more authentic and solve the problem of it being too light.
I dont think they cud fit a tube TV in there
Dave Dave ruclips.net/video/MyFnqtem2jE/видео.html
This thing was made to capitalize on a fad. A CRT costs more money. Less profit.
I really want someone to make a tiny CRT arcade cabinet. I know someone out there can find and colorize a few viewfinder CRTs or something. It needs to be done. Do it, Internet. You know you want to. :-D
A CRT arcade shader at least would be nice, its too bad they didn't give that option
Part of me wishes they would make it either a little bigger or a little smaller... smaller so it can fit on a shelf more easily or bigger so you're not peering into such a tiny screen and maybe provide a slightly less impish joystick. The size it's at, I'm not really sure where you would really play it... sitting on your lap? Hunching over a coffee table? It looks like it would need a very specific setup to be comfortable playing it for any more then 10 minutes. Maybe that's the point.
I think the size is just right--any smaller, it's a toy, any bigger, well, just get a bartop.
I really wanted one of these until I saw the size of that joystick. My hands are small but I still don’t think that joystick would feel right for me. The machine looks wonderful though.
Thank you, glad you like it! We've spent an awfully long time perfecting the joystick for comfortable use. It's a high quality 4-way joystick with that classic 'clicky' feel. After a few revisions, we're quite happy to say that despite its size, it looks and feels great and is still comfortable after long use.
So the question we all want to know is, can it be hacked? It would be SO cool if you could upload your own emulator & ROM set to this thing! I wonder if it has any flash RAM on board? The CPU and RAM specs seem like it would be more than capable of some serious emulation! I would freaking LOVE to get a chance to hack this thing to play my entire retro ROM collection! Then again, i'm forgetting about the lack of buttons... that could be a bit of a problem i'd say.
It's so smol!
Gotta give that to Allwinner, they sure get a good share of all those emulation boxes
Quite ironic from my experience with those lol
I recognise that Packard Bell in the background, Pentium MMX "MultiMedia" PC, from around '98 if I'm not mistaken?
all I know is they BETTER make the following cabinets, TRON, tempest, centipede, and donkey kong
what the hell, now we need 'sorry hun, i shrunk nostalgia nerd' - so he can play it properly !!
Wait there is an hdmi cable? Can you try using it in a tv?
Where do you get quarter scale quarters for it? 🤔
For the price I think they could have put in a higher resolution screen. Once you notice all the graphic scaling defects, it's going to be hard to ignore.
I agree, but thing is, the game itself is not really the point of this project--it's the cabinet, which has been recreated down to the smallest detail (something not very well-emphasized in the video). That's the main reason I'm getting it--I consider the cab a work of art. I mean, with a joystick that small, I doubt I'll be playing Pac-Man much on the thing, anyway. From that standpoint, it's more a conversation piece.
The sound, volume control, and scaling issues have been fixed for the release version.
@@NumskullDesigns That is awesome news! Please spread the word, as people are getting the wrong impression from these early videos.
Nice collectors piece. As far as adult playability I’m not sure. It does look really good though.
Finding 1/4 sized quarters may prove tricky.
Why don’t they just make full-size arcade machines anymore? People would buy them.
NuvYou Wait what!?
Yeah, I think Ive seen a full scale Ms Pacman arcade for about $1,000
Just buy an original. I bought one for about $600
acoustic tiles on the walls.... makes for good audio quality
'I WAN IT!!' .... (although mrs magnitude has actually got me a pandoras box 7...anyone know if they are any good?)
Also - anyone seen the 1up street fighter 2+ce+turbo+super arcade free play cabinet?
Can you enter Service Mode and adjust game settings (speed, lives, bonus life point settings)?
I didn't manage to, but there may be a way.
I'd definitely be interested in a Galaga one.
Galaga is coming in 2019!
Very nice.
Might have to save up for one.
One of my most favorite arcade games.
It seems these downsized arcades and game consoles with custom SBCs inside are getting really popular these days. I guess for some people basic emulation is not enough.
That loose cable is probably a serial cable, which can be hooked up to a COM port to access the Linux console.
I've pre-ordered their Pac-Man version and will also get the Ms Pac-Man version and that's it. The other games are not my thing.
But Galaga!
On the closeup of the joystick, it looks like it's telescopic. Is it?
I really like the cabinet and the form factor, but the screen and picture quality are very disappointing. I hoped that after the Play London showing they would've made some improvements, but alas. As it now I can see more use for it as a project case. Incidentally, for people that are complaining about the price, if you'd do the cabinet making yourself, you'd see the costs add up rather quickly (even assuming you'd get everything right the first time).
Yep, Numskull isn't making much profit on these, so the price is actually fair for those who want something like this. Also, the unit in this video is still a preproduction, so maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised with the final build's screen. I think the screen is actually fine, as it's the authentically recreated cab that interests me most, but obviously, a greater resolution display would have been preferred. But again, that likely would have raised costs.
Will absolutely get the Galaga one if it's made. Couldn't find an email signup page for future info, though. :/
The Galaga one is coming next year! An email sign-up is at the bottom of our site - and you can of course follow NumskullDesigns on social media. :)
www.numskull.com
seems smaller than a quarter.. maybe 1/6th. The full sized ones are bigger than a refrigerator.
So I like these replica machines in a small size. Could none of these companies consider building full-size machines though? I understand the price factor, but we need a rise again of real arcades.
The imperfect pixel scaling would be a "no sale" from me.
Yes! At last, I've always wanted to see an arcade overrun by huge ogres.
Hmmm...still debating on whether I should purchase one or not 🤔
You totally should!
The sound "jumping" dramatically in volume means the wrong potentiometer was used. It probably has to be half the resistance range.
So you talk about the joystick and didn't say if it has a 4way limiter. That's make or break for these old games. Hitting a diagonal by accident is typically suicide once the game gets intense.
It's a good question. I'm waiting for the final version to arrive and test.
Yay I'm actually early to a video. I also want this arcade cabinet soooo bad
But does it include a self shrinking machine?
Hook up that serial connection I'd love to know software thier using.
This gives me an idea...
Does it run an OS in the background?
Really Awsome :D Youst for the looks as decoration its awsome, Alsoe Retro :D
