  • "a plume drenched in blood to pen the course of history"
omg he did a video on an old srpg some number of people played brooooo
Covenant of the Plume is weird for a few reasons. Firstly, nixing the Valkyrie main character thing, but sure, Wylfred's viable. Second, trying to transpose traditional VP gameplay onto an srpg framework, which does well, it's not awful, but it comes with a lot of little quirks.
For example, most units are melee-exclusive, and don't get the ability to initiate combat at range (all combat is to be initiated, you're not just dropping single attacks, but trying to land squad-strikes) and so many characters lack the utility of, say, FFT with it's classes. No melee unit has a ranged attack, everyone has access to the same pool of utility options via skills, it's WEIRD.
But I'm not gonna get too nerdy, and instead look at the game in sum. A lot of those micro-points are cool, but it's hard to even get people invested in the thing enough to care, so here's my attempt at making Coom seem interesting. Check it.

Genuinely my favourite of the Valkyrie Profile games mechanically, and I love the branching narrative. Was it edgy? Absolutely. Was Wylfred sarcastic as hell? Hell yes. It was so damn edgy that it totally realised it was ludicrous, and ripped it's own story a new one in the Seraphic Gate, especially with the Truthade descriptions of the characters.
And I loved that each recruitable character is, in a sense, a reflection of Wyl or his family situation. When you realise that, it adds so much to understanding them, since they're basically just different facets of a small selection of character archetypes, even though they each have distinct personalities.
Only thing I wish is that the characters interacted with each other after their chapters were over, at least on the A route, since you can guarantee their survival in that one.

This game really says, "You need to kill your friends, NOW." And then gives you a better ending if you don't. :)

I mean in Fuga's case it's not a "you need to kill your friends", but rather "it's an option and it might make some fights easier, but is it really worth winning if you sacrifice the people important to you?"

@@okaminodin4321 to be fair Covenant of the Plume if you stop sacrificing right away - Wilfred very early in story will show that he was so shocked and hurt by what happened to Ancel after... Well... He was tricked into using Plume... He became afraid to use it ever again.
Also Ancel's "Plume's Reward" Legacy skill Wilfred gets is enough to get good ending on first run. Yes it is hard but not crazy hard - just makes you really count when to use what - especially your only Plume superbuff (And Ancel's buff is CRAZY STRONG)

      It’s not hell at all.
If you are decent at strategy RPGs and become more than proficient at juggling and timing the combos in general then the A ending on your 1st playthrough becomes very easy.
You can eventually get so good at combos that you don’t even need soul crushes for most of the game to get full overkills on enemies and the soul crush notification actually becomes a nuisance threatening to break up your combos rather than a trump card. You can get so good at tactically maneuvering your characters and using skills that you actually start feeling sorry for the game in thinking it is challenging you.

A good review of this one! It was one of my favorites, despite all of its multifarious problems. I actually thought Wylfred standing by and letting things happen was kind of a nice narrative element, characterizing him as the kid he still is- he doesn't have the will to act because he knows he's already in over his head and he needs to stick with the plan or he'll never get what he selfishly wants. So he just sidesteps all these political machinations, and either he uses his friends because he can't stop being selfish, or he doesn't because he's too scared to commit. Ultimately he's not angry at Lenneth; he's angry at the unfeeling forces of the universe that move without a care to his wishes, and this is his terrible way of trying to extract some kind of control. IDK it just works better than it should.

The game story was interesting as you see how some things in the different Routes are explained in other routes, like the incident that got the Mage and Healer kicked out of the service of the Court was due to one guy on the other route where they end up killing each other. The story still ended up depressing me though.

That’s the point though, you aren’t supposed to sacrifice them(from Wylfred’s POV). Losing Ancel to the plume because Wylfred was pushed into a corner was hard enough.
Wylfred thinks he has to sacrifice them but he ultimately discovers that empowering Hel is just making a terribly bleak world even worse and he is directly responsible for that so he has the responsibility to fix the damage he caused.

I somehow got the best ending on my 1st playthrough without a guide. The key is fulfilling sin quotas and getting rewards at the end of each battle by overkilling each enemy as much as you can. I think you get 100 sin points on an overkill if you do overkill damage for an enemy's max hp. So when you start a combo off, on an enemy you've knocked down to a sliver of health, you might be able to pull that off. Failure to fulfil sin quotas results in madly overpowered enemies being thrown at you which requires you to sacrifice characters with the plume if you want to stand a chance.

    • @nighthero7
      @nighthero7 3 месяца назад

Same I got best ending on first go. One big factor is when you fail to meet sin quota too. Some levels don't spawn a Shadow Character in the next. So as long as you meet them in the right levels you're good. But yeah, any level with the vampire enemies is pure RNG on whether they kill the escort or not, Rosea & Valmur levels.

I think the reason your videos are so comfy is cause you still use so much of the original Fable soundtrack. Hits me in a soft spot. Probably THE softest spot.

5:33 Many tactical RPGs don't use direct Provoke or aggro increasing skills because, put simply, it would be too strong of an ability for the player, and an absolute nightmare if an enemy were to lock all targeting to itself. Imagine if you could be assured all enemies would target your big, bulky armor knight in instead of the squishy healer directly next to him? Isn't it frustrating to not be able to target that rogue terrorizing your mage because the knight on the opposite side of you decided that he wants you to fight only him?
Many games use a concept called Zone of Control, or ZoC, to offset this. ZoC is anything that makes it harder to move directly past an enemy unit, like a movement penalty for tiles right next to a Knight, the "Overwatch" stance in X-Com, or Attacks of Opportunity in a game like D&D, allowing a free attack on anyone who moves past. Games that use a ZoC that reaches further than one tile also allow certain units to effectively trap others next to them, making it difficult to disengage and keeping others stuck with them.
Loved the video, was always curious to try this series, so it's nice to see someone else play through them.

I got the A ending without new game +, it is possible, tough as nails though but a fun challenge. This is the only SRPG that I ever enjoyed and the main reason why was the formations and the action combat from 1 as well as the skill system made the game feel so much more involving and fulfilling than any other SRPG I ever played. The seraphic gate in COTP is the best bonus dungeon ever created, period.
I also like the story, the edginess, the brooding, the slaughter, I live for this stuff.
Sadly Covenant Of The Plume, while an amazing game will always be second to Valkyrie Profile 2 for me because Valkyrie Profile 2 is the best game ever but it's certainly an amazing, underrated game in its own right.
I think Wylfred should have heeded Guiles advice and went home to be a family man... but we can't have that now can we...

Kudos to you for covering covenant of the plume. Not a great game but unique tactical rpg experience especially since it encourages you to sacrifice units for powerful field wide spells. Which if you want the best ending you can’t do that and you have to deal with suicidal guest units that make Tactics Ogre blush. Good luck doing an A ending without new game plus.

I did it... Heck, I did it blind. Just really wanted to show I need no Gods to get Willy boy his revenge. At first I didn't even fill Sin Quota per level... Until I found out that Hel is a nasty manager and you may not use Plume but weekly quota of Sin is a MUST or enjoy her personal hit squad of overleveled ghosts going after you in the next mission.

Got the good ending on my first playthrough, but it was due to abusing Sorceror's that could amp your stats and archer's that could attack from far away. I rarely moved away from my starting position. I just let enemies come to me and jumped them.
I game overed early on and I realized the game wanted me to abuse the systems in place. So I did.

  • @guyfromfireemblemtheblazin3391

something i really like about wylfred is that hes not supposed to be a hero. the guy's just a stupid teenager who blames his father's death on someone who pretty much had nothing to do with it. his quest for revenge doesnt just hurt him, it hurts the people around him too, and arguably more so. ancel's death, regardless of the route, is the catalyst to wylfred's actions. in A route, between feeling so strongly guilty from killing ancel, and seeing lockswell and cheripha's reconciliation, wylfred cant bring himself to continue using the plume, and spares them. he goes on to meet ushio, another man on a quest of revenge. after rosea and lieselotte die, ushio just feels... nothing. he doesnt feel satisfied, he doesnt feel happy. he realizes his path of vengeance was pointless. wylfred continues abstaining from using the plume, until he tells ailyth that he would rather go to niflheim than continue their contract
alternatively, after ancel's death, he sees it as the point of no return. he's already killed his best friend, there's no turning back now, he thinks. he doesnt want his best friend's death to be in vain, even if deep down he realizes that this is foolish, and ancel would be strongly against it. he chooses to continue pursuing vengeance, and continue killing allies for the plume. ultimately, his vengeance doesnt amount to anything. it was all pointless, it didnt serve to benefit anyone. after failing to complete the contract, he is sent to niflheim. or alternatively, his father is sent there in his stead, once again with his quest for vengeance resulting in nothing but the suffering of those around him.
i think it couldve been executed way better, but there is so much potential here limited by budget and the fact that the game is on a handheld console
