How to Make Boiled Peanuts | Fresh from the Backyard Garden!

- Опубликовано: 18 сен 2022
- Earlier this year we planted an entire 30' row of Valencia Red Peanuts so that we could have our own boiled peanuts fresh from the backyard garden. We checked those peanuts a couple weeks ago and they're finally ready to harvest.
Join us as we harvest the entire 30' row of Valencia peanuts, pick the peanuts off the plants, and boil a huge pot of them. We'll show you the easy way we like to make boiled peanuts and also discuss other ways to cook boiled peanuts if you don't have a big pot or a propane burner.

Love me some good boiled peanuts
Boiled peanuts done right is a southern tradition. As a kid I'd spend all day pulling up peanut plants so we could make some of the greatest boiled peanuts I've ever had. My step fathers family had been making boiled peanuts for generations starting in south Carolina. Nothing better than hot or cold salty boiled peanuts. .
Love me some boiled peanuts!
Yippee for boiled peanuts!!! Nothing better!
The yeast in the beer gives it texture and helps with the salt penetrating the 🥜
The best boil peanuts are when you take them out of the ground and wash them and let them soak for a few hours and then barely crack each shell so the water and salt can get in there, and then put them in hot water in your pot, put you a can of Budweiser and put a little salt to start, let them boil for about an hour, but keep them stirred and then check for softness, and see if needed more salt.
I about died when you said stop at the one with less teeth!! 🤣🤣
I typically add star anise seed (adds a somewhat licorice favor) and rock salt to my water. In Hawaii, this mixture is the most popular. Split the shell just a bit at the pointy end of the peanuts to allow the water to enter inside the shell while its cooking. Bring the pot to a boil, leave covered for 70-80 (my preference) minutes then its ready. The flavor is incredible. The water gets inside the shell and cooks the peanut faster and minimizes the use of salt. Come to Hawaii and try some...hmmm, hmmm good!
Travis a little story on peanuts. My wife and I found a single PN plant 3 years ago growing by one of our fruit trees. We have no idea how it got there so just figured the crows brought it in from a fairly nearby field. My wife transplanted it in the garden, we saved the PN (seed), planted about a 4-to-6-foot row from them last year and then this year we have both a 60' row of them and an 80' row. Needless to say we are eating boiled PN, roasted PN, glazed PN, PN brittle and you name it - they DO multiply quickly. Love'em boiled! Thanks for sharing. 👍
Wow! That's wonderful that you've been able to keep them going like that.
Brother I’m sure you and I could polish off that whole pot haha I’m like you I crave those little jokers. I call them country caviar like a lotta folks yours looked great. I’ll try growing some even thong the farmers market not far from me has them almost year round. Cheers!
I wish I was there eating those boiled peanuts. Salt is all I need in my peanuts. Once done cooking, I like to turn the fire off and let them soak for an hour or two. Now I'm craving them. Oh yea, Need a beer or 12 too. 😀
Before I started growing my own, I used to buy my boiled peanuts from this little place in Old Town, Florida, called Maria's Dixie Nut House and Bait. Yum! Now I'm looking at pulling up 130 row feet of peanuts over the next month. I will save some for seed and boil most of the rest. I will, however, set some aside to make peanut butter and roast some for my Yankee wife who had a deprived childhood with respect to the proper way to cook peanuts.
Good for you letting your wife enjoy those delicious boiled peanuts!
I've always been known for thinking out of the box so yep, jumped the gun on my well hardened off zone 7 Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cabbage, shoot ~ even Brussel Spouts. 🤣Hitting a hundred degrees the last few days and got a few days left to go. I've been keeping the soils cooled off by watering in the blasting full sun heat. I'm surprised they are still standing. Checked soil temp regularly and they're staying cool, hopefully cool enough. Hehe! Bolt on ol' son! PS: Send me some of those finished boiled peanuts. They'd be a good snack while I till in these bolted transplants for cover crop rye, turnips, and peas. 🤣🤣
That's what you have to do sometimes. I've had some newly transplanted peppers struggling in this heat spell and I've been having to do the same.
They are some of the least known, misunderstood, and absolutely delicious foods out there.
Totally agree!
I eat peanuts every day,any kind😎👍🏻Waycross Ga.
Love some boiled peanuts.
Also put some sort of screen at the bottom of the raised beds to help keep criters out
Side of the road! Yes!!! ❤ And that pot is all I need.
Those look great
Never seen anyone cook boiled peanuts. Thank you.
Nasty if you're not raised on them. You ain't missing nothing.
Makes my mouth water. Enjoy.
Travis, you are so funny. A side of the road seller, with few teeth, and the fewer the teeth, the better those boiled peanuts are likely to taste good. That analogy is a hoot!
Its not an analogy. Its South Georgia. That's legit advise.
The best way to eat them is to leave them in the brine. Put the whole shell in your mouth, crack it slightly with your teeth and then slurp the brine out of the shell. Pull the shell back out open it up and then eat the nuts. If brine isn't rolling off of your elbows you aren't eat 'em right.
We call those "pops" -- the peanuts that have gotten a little mushy and that are full of brine with hardly no peanut inside.
@@LazyDogFarm , my favorite
I love boiled peanuts!
From my many years of boiling Valencia peanuts, I learned as the water cools in the pot, the more the peanuts absorb the salt.
That's true. It's not necessarily about how much salt you add, but the soak time.
This brings me back. I used to scout cotton and some peanuts. Still make myself a bug pot of boiled peanuts every year and I am in my late 50,s now.
Very true 👍. The best boiled peanuts are sold on the side of the road😊
I do mine in a pressure cooker. It doesn’t take near as long. I like the jumbo white peanuts way better than Valencia’s. But any boiled peanuts are better than no boiled peanuts. 🥜🥜🥜
Love boiled peanuts , haven’t had them in years. My mother was from Mississippi so used to go get them green peanuts in September . And bring them home and boil them .
Yes I would like to try some of your homegrown peanuts. I think its worth while growing your own and cooking them.
Good video
I absolutely love boiled peanuts. Mmm I grew some year before last but didn’t get a whole lot. I plan to plant a bunch of em when I get my larger garden set up. Thanks for the tips on cooking em up.
Hi Travis. Good Job. I love boiled peanuts. I never made them myself, might give it a try in the kitchen. I lived in New Orleans for 26 years.
Crawfish, crab, or shrimp boils are fantastic. Your boiling rig is a real common thing in Louisiana.
Chuck in Jensen Beach.
I really like the idea of the no till plot. I'm going to try it on part of my property this year.
The first year will just be okay, but it will get better year after year.
I have never had boiled peanuts only fresh roasted from the bait shop. Where you shop, eat peanuts and throw the shells on the floor. Let me tell you..don't try throwing the shells on the floor at home..momma wasn't going for it 🤪. Daddy got us kids in trouble haha.
Haha!
NICE ! I hate to say it that boiling peanuts is new to me. Something new to try next year. John S.
Love me some boiled peanuts, enjoy for me!!
My top shelf of my freezer is full of boiled peanuts and I’ve got a few quarts of them canned for later. First time growing them! They are delicious!
Salt and vinegar boil peanuts are amazing, I love trying everybody's peanuts, ive ate a lot of great tasting peanuts all throughout Georgia and south Carolina. Youre right them can peanuts are not really that good, they'll do though in a rush, the cajun canned boiled peanuts aren't that bad, fyi, the boiled peanuts in these stores through out Georgia are can peanuts, there's a few that get them in a bag and put them in the crockpots to be sold
I love boiled peanuts! When I cook them, I leave them in the pot full of salty water until they cool. They seem to absorb the salty water and are delicious.
Go Dogs, love me some boiled peanuts on game day........
We love boiled peanuts! Never grown any though. It's been a while since I made them, but we found a recipe for making them in an instapot (or similar) and they turned out great. I think they got done in a couple hours.
I could help you finish the pot…love them. Haven’t had any good ones since we don’t travel to Florida anymore. Enjoy!
I have some in the ground still. I see now I didn’t plant enough. Lol. Glad you got some to enjoy.
Yeah it would take a decent amount of row feet to get a big pot's worth.
They look good, Travis. I could almost smell them! LOL!
They smelled fabulous!
Wish we were there !!
We like ours with garlic yum !!
I had a squirrel deposit peanuts in my garden last year. I had just two plants and I nurtured it the best I could. And it was a bust. But, I think thats interesting. Not sure I would like boiled peanuts but definitely interesting.
All I've ever had was out of a can but I love boiled peanuts. Couldn't imagine what homemade taste like. May try to grow some next year.
Can ones are gross compared to the real deal lol. Try to get u some from the road side if u can. Soooo much better.
I don't salt salt or any seasoning until the last few minutes of cooking. Just like beans salt makes it take longer to cook
I use 1/3 container of salt for 4 lbs of peanuts. Boil for roughly 2 hours, shut the fire off and leave covered but checking occasionally to see if all peanuts have sunk to the bottom of the pot. Drain ‘em and eat em.
I could eat the whole bowl full right now! I have always loved boiled peanuts!!🥜
Same here!!!!
Always.
In NYC, there's peanut carts all over. Boiled with salt and candied.
Travis, Never have tried boiled peanuts ! With a couple of beers, I'll help you eat some. (lol) All the best from S. N.H.
LOL! HOW MANY "TEEF" YOU GOT HERE BRO?!!!
Water 1 quart, salt 1/4 cup, liquid crab boil 2 tbsp per pound. That's how we roll in south Mississippi.
Love me some boiled peanuts! I wish I could be right there with y'all!
Us too!
It's nice to live close to Travis, shoot its only 20 mins away. Gonna try growing some next year.
What you really mean is.....an hour is as long as we can wait until we start eating some. They aren't ready yet, but we are just going to keep getting a bowl full out every 30 minutes and maybe there will be some left to eat when they are done. Add some salt...eat a little more. Add some more, eat a little more. That's so funny because that's exactly what happens.
Correct! That's the best way to do it.
You can have my bowl of 🥜 . 😅 loved seeing how they grow though. Got some okra growing. Took a bite off one directly from the stalk like you did. There is a slimy film that stays in your mouth yuk! Will be frying up these bad boys instead. 😂
I don't even notice the okree slime. Guess I'm used to it.
Reckon I will have to find me some peanuts this weekend.
I LOVE boiled peanuts. My boys overheard this video and said how they wished they had some right now. I guess I know what I am making this weekend.
Got to now!
@@LazyDogFarm absolutely. Great video as always. It is nice to have a channel that is in my neck of the woods. I am in Northwest Georgia so I take your tips and adapt them easily for my area. Thanks you all you do.
A few months ago this Idahoan was near Athens at Jaemor Farms getting boiled peanuts. Can’t wait to get back there! Actually I need a good price on raw peanuts here. 👍
Good stuff!
I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and have never had an opportunity to try boiled peanuts. I like peanuts, so I’d like to try them someday.
If you ever make it down this way, you've gotta get some!
Ya'll buy your boiled peanuts like we buy the best tamales, out of the back of a car normal people wouldn't dare stop for....
Same with cracklins. Look for the fella on the side of the road in an ole beat up pickup truck. Best ever.
The sketchier the seller, the better the product.
If they spell it "peanut" move on till you find that "p-nut" sign
@@LazyDogFarm If they got an ankle monitor you've gone too far. Those red peanuts look great.
I love tamales
You say Hoss came over ? Collaboration time lol. I still love watchin the younger fatter you doing the row by row garden show. Always lots of good info and vibes from your vids.
Pa is what we call my grandfather. That's Hoss' dad.
@@LazyDogFarm good stuff man. I bet he is even cooler than your dad
Also, can cook boiled peanuts in a pressure cooker cuts the time way down, add some liquid smoke for an old-time favor.
Hey Travis, As far as cooking my peanuts I use a 23qt Presto cooker. As soon as your water comes to a boil, and your little chimney pops up put on your pressure regulator. Let the pressure build up to 10-15lbs and cut off your gas. also I salt my peanuts before boiling, this is much faster and will save you a tone of gas. Let them sit for about 2hrs.
Yeah that's definitely the cheaper way to do it. But sometimes I just like to stand outside and hear that fire burning underneath that pot!
@@LazyDogFarm Yea, I know what you mean, I enjoy the whole process. Love to boil peanuts all summer long.
We need to know how many teeth you have before we decide your expertise level on this.
I'm right there with you, Trav! That's living! I agree on the NuNu's or Slap Ya Mama! Wake those goobers up!! Never have understood those folks that think boiled peanuts are gross!!
I think the same folks that don't like boiled peanuts probably don't like okree either.
Those warm ups at the beginning of Fall on the west coast we call Indian summers. It means deer season.
Looks like peanuts are some work. More respect for former president Carter. Paul
I've heard that term "Indian summer," but was never quite sure what it meant. Thanks for the info.
Wish I was there to eat peanuts 🥜🥜🤣🤣 too
Hey LDF, something to think about, if you use wood chips in the raised bed garden when they break down it makes the perfect medium for weeds. Ask me how I know. I think it would be much better if you cut up one of your tarps and lay them under the edges of the beds.
We have a pretty low weed seed bank in this plot due to our cover cropping and tarping over the years. Sure, there might be a few weeds here and there. But I think the weed pressure should be quite minimal.
Enjoyed the video Travis. You didn’t try mention when to dig up my peanuts? Mine are green and lush. Yours seemed to have turned yellow a bit. Is that what I am looking for. Thanks for your help. I love all your videos and advice. I love how you ask for feed back and ask questions to the group. I watch you mainly because I am just north of Savanna, and we have similar conditions. But I have raised beds, so glad you are incorporating them into your farm.
Thanks , karen
Sorry, but I think the boiled peanuts are gross. I need to find a video on how to roast them. 😊
I'd just start checking them around 120 days or so from planting or when they turn yellow. Our Virginia Jumbo peanuts don't look like they're ever going to turn yellow though.
LOL. Find someone with few teeth on the side of the road selling boiled peanuts. 🤣 I certainly would be open to trying some of those peanuts since I have never had boiled peanuts before. *Only thing is....you still have all of your teeth from what I can tell* 😲 So I will just have to take your word that they are good. 😀
I do still have all my teeth. But selling boiled peanuts on the side of the road is a rough way to make a living.
@@LazyDogFarm Fortunately you don't have to do that! 😀 But it does mean your peanut boiling skills get called into question. 🤔 [just kidding] Looks like you would have needed 3 to 4 of rows of peanuts to fulfill your needs. Maybe next year. Looking forward to the raised beds going in.
Boiled peanuts 🥜.🙏🏾
Enjoy :)
I've never tried boiled peanuts actually never heard of them until you mentioned them in an earlier video. I'll have to figure a way to give them a try.
Warning! Boiled peanuts are highly addictive. They have AA meetings for addiction if you have any problems.
Yes, very addictive. Hard to stop once you start.
Double warning if you're not raised on them they are nasty.
@@dontaylor8451 they sure must be something you are raised on. Tried them when we moved to Florida from Chicago, never again.
@@dontaylor8451 true. I was not exposed to them young or really ever. I have tried them and I compared them to cowpeas. I did eat all 3.
Yeah where you live at you ain't too far from Mount Pleasant North Carolina are you save some for me
Lol 😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅. Look at the teeth. I’m in NYC looking to grow some peanut next growing season.
I'm not the biggest fan of boiled peanuts but you have to boil them to make my preferred peanuts.Boil with lots of salt, crab boil &, for the amount you made, 2 bottles of your preferred hot sauce. Boil until done. place in large sheet tray & bake at 225/250 until properly parched. Deer hunters delight.
Hmm. Never heard of doing that way, but I bet that is good!
Try cooking them in an instapot
😂 few teeth, best peanuts😂😂
Here in north Georgia we’re pretty picky about our boiled peanuts , they need to be just right
Some of the best boiled peanuts I've ever had come from up that way. Sunshine Grocery between Vogel and Blairsville usually has some pretty good ones.
I could eat a lot of boiled peanuts.
WOW, I’ve only tried canned ones so not a big fan. I would love to try the real deal!
Gotta try the real deal!
Had them twice to confirm that they are nasty,.... They were foul tasting both times
As Travis said , the can boiled peanuts are nasty. I sell boil peanuts myself and sell on the side of the road. ( Still have most of my teeth though) thanks to my dentist. 😁 Seriously, if you traveling through the south and see a roadside stand stop and ask for a small sample, most vendors will let you try before you buy.
Could you do a how to grow peanuts video please? I have Virginia style peanuts in my little zone 9b central west coast Florida garden, about 3 weeks in, and the plants look great, but this Fl girl has no idea what Im doing😬. Btw, we love us some boiled peanuts!
I've only grown them one time, so I'm not one to be giving lessons on growing peanuts. 😂
Well, you look like a champ! Its hard to fine growing techniques for the deep south, thats why Im so grateful for your videos. We're just different.
Keep the shells outside in the rain for awhile, let the salt wash off first
I’m not sure about boiled peanuts, I guess I’m going to need to try some!! There’s plenty of people around here ain’t got a tooth in their head but they ain’t got no peanuts either!😂😂😂
Oh my goodness. I've been dying for some boiled peanuts for over a decade. I've tried a few times, but I've never used fresh peanuts before and always wondered why they never got soft even after hours
They take a long time to cook!
Nurse Lucy we used to take peanuts that were not fresh and very dry and soak them in a bucket of clean cold water for 24 hours. Then boil them hard for several hours. They were ok. But nothing compares to fresh green peanuts for boiled peanuts It is a night and day difference like the difference in taste in a store bought tomato and one picked fresh ripe off the plant.
How long will the boiled peanuts last in a slow cooker on low heat before spoiling ?
The longer they soak, the saltier they'll get. We usually drain and pull them once they taste salty enough.
💪🏽
Assuming there would be any left (which I think is a bad assumption), how would you store them?
I've seen folks freeze them in gallon ziplock bags. But we rarely have any left.
I'm late to the party and you're probably not responding to comments on a video this old, but if you are I'm wondering about how many plants made that bucket of peanuts you grew. I'm here because I had this wild notion to put a couple raw peanuts that I bought from the store (to make boiled peanuts) into some dirt and they sprouted. I planted them in a big tub thinking maybe I could grow enough for a pot of homegrown boiled peanuts, but now I'm thinking two plants ain't going to be enough. They are only a couple of weeks old. Thinking about running to the store to buy another bag. Just don't know how many more I should plant. I'm in south Florida, so not sure how well they will do in my climate, but I 'm going to give it a try.
It takes at least a 40' row to make a decent pot of peanuts.
@@LazyDogFarm Thank you!
Few teeth! AlAbama population fixing to get bigger looking for boiled peanuts
Haha!
Question ? Is that too much salt, to add to your compost pile ?
I don't think so. Most of the salt gets licked off when eating them.
Travis are they the shells you boil??
Yes, you boil the shell and all.
Im not sure I have ever had boiled peanuts. I just roast them in like 30 minutes. Is the boiling doing something that makes a great flavor change?
Boiled peanuts do taste different than roasted peanuts. Different texture too.
@@LazyDogFarm Yeah, now you got it in my head they are like peanut butter. Just a dream but what a dream.
I'm way up north can I grow peanuts (what variety)?
I don't know if you could grow them way up north, but maybe. They're gonna need 120-140 days of warm weather. Valencia is the variety we like to use for boiling. We also have a variety called Virginia Jumbo planted.
@@LazyDogFarm Valencia simply the best. IMHO Enjoy your videos
As a Yankee you ain't quite right son. Peanuts should be roasted and salted. LOL. Just don't seem right to do that to fine legumes.😁. Guess that's what you all been doing for decades but up here we've never had that up here.
You gotta try it at least once!
Trying to get a recipe for 30 lbs of green peanuts out side boiling pot but no one can tell you how much of the ingredients to use to start can any body help thank you
It's all about the soak. Just add a couple tablespoons of salt every 30 mins or so until they taste salty enough. The longer you let them soak in the water, the saltier they will get.
Is that salt going to hurt your compost?
Ever try using a pressure cooker to make 'em?
I've not ever tried the pressure cooker method, but I hear it works well.
