I just did my first brake job (front pads & rotors) on my 2015 F150. Was trying to beat the dark and didn't pay attention to the ears! Go spongy brake pedal and pedal goes all the way down. I noticed a cracked cap. Ordered a new one. Then also bled the brakes (first time for me). Still same problem. Then I saw this video tonight. I suspect this is the problem. I can't wait to check it in the morning! Thank you so much for the this video! If this isn't the problem I have no idea what it might be so I'll probably take it to a mechanic at the point. Will update here in the morning! Thanks! UPDATE: Sure enough! That was my problem!! Thank you so much! Learned a valuable lesson here! Thank you again!
36K on 2013. Didn't replace them but removed them to clean (squeaking) and grease the slides. No problems with sponginess. It's my experience that sponginess in older vehicles I've owned. is a sign of worn brake fluid or air in the lines. (Leaking somewhere)
Good evening, this happened to me today and your video really saved me.i wanted to say thank you for the knowledge, please keep up the great work I subscribed and look forward to more videos.thank you again.
It's amazing how many people you just helped in the comments and I have a call for this exact thing "My 2005 F150 is spongy and had everything brake wise replaced". Yes, I will admit, I have a note to verify the ABS sensor and I sure as heck hope it's not. I will update you on this today.
For me it's my abs module. Itll cause a soft petal. If yous stomp on the petal fast it'll be hard but if you press gently itll be soft. Also another way to check is on the abs pump, behind driver wheel liner, under where all the lines come in theres 2 dust covers, pop them off and stick a precision screw driver in there and slowly press the petal, if it moves abs is bad
@@repairvehicle partially true. I have solved many 10th gen f150s with the soft petal. Tested the way I described. The truck owners did the tests, and when determined it was the abs module and or pump. Then they had the part changed and had a solid petal again. I'm dealing with this issue right now but I cannot afford a pump
I had bad hoses from the calipers to the frame, they were swelling like a balloon when I pushed on the pedal, the problem went away after replacing the hoses with new ones.
Thank you for the video. I cannot do anything with my car and don’t want to. But I pay for one diagnostic after another and they cannot fix it. Currently in Kuwait, bought used car Lincoln MKX 2012 with this pain in the back. They kindly suggested to change everything what may cause this issue- master cylinder, ABS and brake booster. Help!
I have a 97 e250. Could this apply to the 250 models as well? I got a spongy peddle after replacing front pads an rotors. Never open the system. I've now had it at 2 shops an still have soft peddle
I have an e150 with the spongy brakes, perhaps the same problem as in the video. I see alot of brake pads but don't show those bumps/ears. What make and model pads have the ears?
WOW! I looked at my pads and they looked the same. I will look again in the morning and I bet I will see them installed wrong. The picture of my motorcraft pads shows the humps.. Unbelievable
NEVER heard of such, SO, is the pads with the ears THICKER? I mean the METAL part that the material is bonded on, the METAL EAR piece THICKER than the opposite side pad?
My brakes just disappeared completely. We’re a little spongy but now just hit the floor. I had to hit the ditch and busted myself up pretty good. I can’t find what the problem is.
I am doing a 2016 f150 ecotec. I noticed my LF caliper didnt slide by hand after assembly. Then pumping brakes, I hear LF caliper squeaking upon releasing the pedal pump. My old pads have the same humps G'damb these piece of shitttt Ford engineers. Always something to make me look like an incompetent mechanic!!! 🤬

Did it work?
I'm agree with you, always look for something simple first, before assuming it's something worse, or expensive 🤔.
I can not find the ears on the 1998 f150 brake pads... ? Is this all f150s?
Thank you for this. I was scratching my head for a minute.
You are welcome
Yep it worked 👍👍thanks
Thanks for your help,my helper put the pads on backwards, I was about to throw away the pads
You are welcome
Yup this was my problem to. Crazy that would make a difference
What year is your truck?
@@repairvehicle 2016
@@repairvehicle Was the 1978 F150 like this also?
No because that's when they made a real truck@REVNUMANEWBERN
very helpful. I was stumped before seeing it. Thanks!
I have really soft brakes in my 99 F150, (bleed the brakes endlessly) anyone know if this would apply to a 97-03 F150? Cheers

@northerngarage3154 abs has nothing to do with it, because abs works only when wheels slip or close to lock up

Thank you for this video. My son's 2013 F150 Platinum was having soft brakes after new calipers. It was exactly this that was causing it.
Thank you for talking time and leaving a comment
Mine is having the same problem spongy brakes change calipers and no difference I’ll check the brakes tomorrow
Thank you!
I had bad hoses from the calipers to the frame, they were swelling like a balloon when I pushed on the pedal, the problem went away after replacing the hoses with new ones.

I don't understand your question, what problems do you have with your vehicle.
Man you save me alot time and money thanks for the video

It doesn’t cost anything except 10 minutes to pull wheel off and caliper
And am I looking for the same caliper holes? I've been using orilley pads for years but this time have issues
I would change your master cylinder
What year models cause this didn’t apply to my 2015?
YEP, that would be a GREAT HELP TIP, I'd say maybe see what YEARS have the same part numbers for the pads
Yup, thank you Put one side in backwards , it's fixed now Leave it to ford
Fixed my issue. Thanks for sharing !!!
What do you have?
Fixed my problem. Thank you so much for this video.

Thanks for tip!
Does this apply to a 2011 f150 platinum too my brakes feel good sometimes or before putting in gear pedal sinks
Yes
My 05 F150 doesn't have ears or bumps on the new pads or the old ones. What year is your f150?
2013
I have an e150 with the spongy brakes, perhaps the same problem as in the video. I see alot of brake pads but don't show those bumps/ears. What make and model pads have the ears?
F150s have for sure
Mine don’t have the bumps/ears and I don’t have spongy brakes
Excellent video. Thank you. I had mine in wrong. 👍🏻
You are welcome
How does the "ear" make the brake spongy? It should not impact the feel of air in the lines. can you explain the why? THX
Ear prevents pad from being moved closer to rotor when brake pedal pressed. Pad is being stock when not properly installed.
@@repairvehicle So the eared pad side goes against the caliper plunger? Can one see these ears by just removing the wheel?
Thank you this fixed my issue.

@@repairvehicle searched spongy f150 brake
Did you install them incorrectly?
About to take a look. Never noticed this before. Thx

answers to your questions in the video. It pays to watch and then ask.
Link only takes me to Amazon, don’t know which specific brake pads you are recommending
Pick one that works for your vehicle
Good video, Thank you for posting. Solved my problem . 👍
You're welcome!
Thanks you it's 1141 sat night and i came to this that what I have did thanks you
Thanks .
I've looked at 25 pair for a 97 F150 and none of them have a bump on it or ear or whatever you wanna call it...
Did you look at shape of each pad to see if there was a difference?
I dont think it applies to 03 and under but dont quote me on that
My brakes just disappeared completely. We’re a little spongy but now just hit the floor. I had to hit the ditch and busted myself up pretty good. I can’t find what the problem is.
What do you have, year and mileage, rust belt area?
@@repairvehicle I found it boss. Thanks. Had two separate issues. Had to replace the calipers and a vacuum line, but she is good now. Thanks.

Glad it helped!
Which F150 year is this from?
2013
@@repairvehicle Thanks for the info. I did this but the pedal is still getting push on the floor. I think the brake booster is not working.
If your pedal is soft it has nothing to do with booster
10 minutes time to change brake pads?? I don't think so!! Also where can I find pads for that price??
Link under my comment
Man that was it thanks
!Gracias!
Wtf!! God damn it lol ty, I was breaking my head like wtfffff!!! xD fuckin ford. Tysm for the video!
Not all F-150 have a pistons, 1991-1996 rear shoes have a wheel cylinder not a caliper.
Did I say all f150 have it ?
