      Do you know what kind of plastic? Polypropylene different from polyethylene, etc. I have always struggled trying to fix broken plastic, this looks slick. Also, is this nearly as strong as original?
      Did not know this was possible.

    Just a tip if you rub wax onto a part that doesn't need to be fixed but you want the same surface finish in your repair you can use hot glue in the undamaged area to take an impression of the surface and then use the hardened hot glue as one of your repair sides and you will get a near seamless repair. As far as using the ABS it's fine as long as your in a well ventilated area and using proper PPE. Plus you will get a better molecular bond using the same material and a matching color. Which is better then Epoxy.

      Opposite. It’s only possible to control blade progression when it’s closing to you. If it’s going away from you, you are weaker and have much less control on it so it’s very hazardous, and high risk of getting harm for you or others.
      But it’s true his left hand is not correctly positioned, and blade movement erratic, it’s probably due to video constraint.

    it's not for all the plastic (hence you can see as he does using plastic cup for) and in case you will combine different tipe of plastic, it won't bond too much well, but for those, what can be melted by acetone or somehow reacts with (PVC, ABS, polystyren) it's nice tip, actually.

    To all those who are wondering why the plastic you chose isn't melting or if all plastics can be used
    Acetone will dissolve PVDF, polycarbonate, Polysulfone, Acrylic, PVC, CPVC.
    It will NOT dissolve FEP, PFA, ETFE, ECTFE, PCTFE, PEEK, Polypropylene
    If you use plastic that can dissolve in Acetone and apply it to any other plastic that dissolves in Acetone the residual acetone in your melted mixture will help to melt the edges of the plastic you're applying to and makes it very close to original strength. For other plastics, if you have a small area you need to repair, go grab some T Plus 2 Pipe Thread Sealant from the plumbers section of your hardware store. I know it says thread sealant but trust me, it will work for plastics fantastically. If you're trying to repair a large area, then look up how professionals repair plastic trim on vehicles and apply that technique to the large area you need to fix.

    This works equally well with PMMA/Acrylic/Perspex as it does with PC as shown. I have been doing this to make specialty mixes of PMMA weld. Be advised that with PMMA or PC you want to make your donor chips as small as possible. With softer plastics such as PC, you can use a cheese grater or with harder plastics such as PMMA you could use a metal file. Beware that with PMMA, crazing is possible with extruded sheet. Best results are found when welding cast PMMA.

    • @maxinvictus
      @maxinvictus 3 месяца назад +2

      Can you specify the types of plastic in terms of the grading code (1-7) that is stamped on which work? Also what is the percentage of acetone that you need? Will regular nail polish remover work?

    • @captainotto
      @captainotto 3 месяца назад +1

      @@maxinvictus Well that was interesting. I never checked until now but it's surprising that PMMA is actually #7. That's a shame too because it is actually fully recyclable with multiple cheap and safe pathways. You may find PMMA sold as Plexiglass in US/Canada, Perspex in Europe, or worldwide as Acrylic (as in Acrylic paints or Acrylic resin).
      As for w/w I usually just eyeball it but you can definitely be more scientific about it. Start around 1:1 and work your way up or down as needed. Dissolving takes time. Can take several days. Use a container safe for acetone such as glass or PP (#5).
      Nail polish remover should be fine so long as it does not contain any oils, fragrances, dyes, or other chemicals.

      If you need absolutly to cut something, to your side direction, make sure to never hold the object like he did in the video! Hold it in a way, with keeping in mind that if it miss cut, if wont hurt your holding hand.

      The plastic used in the video is ABS plastic, which breaks down when you add Acetone to it, resulting in the plastic sludge. Plastic bottles are likely made of Polyethylene and Google says Acetone can break down Polyethylene, but I'm unsure if it will turn it into a useful sludge like in the video.

    Thanks for your video, it shows resourcefulness. Disposable minds people won't like it; "right to repair guys" will love it. One caveat: it only applies to *some* plastics, those which can be dissolved in acetone themselves. Clearly syringe, adhesive tape and acetone bottle (I guess polycarbonate) do not. But it applies to *many* everyday items. You should add an extra adhesive bead on the outside of that battery case. Congratulations.

    - Mais l'usage de l'acétone (1:02), doit s'accompagner de nombreuses précautions et c'est de votre responsabilité de le signaler clairement. On voit bien vos gants, mais on ne sait pas si vous travaillez dans une pièce aérée par exemple, loin de toute flamme, etc.

    Only works with ABS. Instead if Acetone you might as well use MEK (methyl ethyl keton)

    Me gustó mucho tu video , disculpa mi sugerencia, tu no explicaste que clase de plástico estas usando, hay plástico que el acetona no lo deshace, porque hay botellas de plástico que contienen acetona, en mi caso si se que clase estas usando, pero las demás personas, por ejemplo las sillas de plástico, esas no se pueden hacer líquido, saludos.

    Why didn't the plastic bottle you used to mix the plastic with acetone melt? After all, it's also made of plastic, right?

    Chemicals are always dangerous. At least useful as one of the efforts to reduce plastic waste. And care is required for any handwork

      You might try MEK. Methyl Ethel Ketone. It may be hard to find nowadays if I remember correctly it will melt plexiglass. Sometimes it's necessary to cut towards yourself, just don't slip. And if you do get out the super glue

      @@sojogunn6249 Super hazardous stuff. MEK is extremely volatile and carcinogenic.

    Si se ve bien pero porque la acetona no derrite al embase de plástico en el cual se hace la fucion del otro plástico?

      Gracias por hacer una muy buena pregunta. La acetona sólo derrite plásticos a base de poliéster, pero no puede derretir otros plásticos.

    • @GausDIY

      because it is a type of plastic that does not dissolve in acetone, acetone only mixes plastics containing Polyester
