I got an S5 a week or so ago and I'm loving it! I use mine to film mainly steam engines & heritage places. I don't think I've got it recording at its peak quality yet but I'm still getting used to it after being a Canon only user for the past few years.
Thanks Rory - I was looking for a camera with good 1080 your review has been the only one that really discussed the quality of its HD. Probably saved me a bit of money here. 👍
I still deliver almost every project in 1080p. 4k just gives me more flexibility when I want to reframe or crop in post. It's especially handy in weddings to get some extra reach. Especially for something like the ring exchange. If I have the couple framed nicely I can essentially get another angle in tighter on the rings.
Honestly if you shoot well the vlog process isn't that hard. Maybe I'll make a video about that but my steps are as follows... I shoot in vlog on camera make sure exposure is never underexposed. Some expose to the right but I personally try to expose exactly correctly. Use a monitoring lut to be able to nail critical focus. I use the one from gamut.io When you import the footage into final cut under the inspector tab you can change it from basic to extended then under 'camera lut' select your favourite vlog-rec709 lut. Once again I use the one from gamut.io sometimes it will underexposed your image slightly but you can bring it back up a bit. From there it's just normal colour correction. I prefer to use the colour wheels and use the waveform and vectorscopes to get it close to perfect then final adjustments to the eye.
Thanks Rory, just received my S5 today with the 24mm f1.8 lens included so looking forward to learning it. Your review helped a lot. I'm a Tassie wedding videographer (ex TVW7 Perth) working in the UK and just making the move to mirrorless from dedicated camcorders (4k) so a bit of a jump, old habits die hard. But I've subscribed to your channel and thanks again for taking the time to give your thoughts on the S5.
Ah that's awesome mate glad it helped! Sorry for the late reply have been on holidays 😂 Once you get your head around the change it will open up a whole different world. Mirrorless is so much more versatile than dealing with camcorders, you just have so much more creative freedom.
Thanks for your comprehensive review of the camera! From other reviews, I suspected that the 1080 in the S5 was not downsampled like it is in the GH5. Your video is the only video thus far that has confirmed this. Thanks for the review!
@@RoryandCasey So when you say it sucks, can you explain on that one? The reason I ask is because I find the viewfinder on the GH5 to be quite good, compared to my Canon T5i, but I am curious about what sucks on the viewfinder on the S5. Thanks for such a quick response....i just subscribed to your channel.
No worries! It's good enough for framing and to get exposure but it's soft and I wouldn't want to rely on it for critical focus when filming. It's fine for photos because the autofocus for photos is spot on but on a sunny day when filming i do sometimes use the evf for getting focus. Peaking still works so I just have to trust that it's working well. The gh5 evf is definitely better than the S5. Not sure about the rebel as I've not used it. That being said you can turn the screen brightness up quite a lot on the S5 which makes it a lot more useable in direct sunlight. It's always going to be a tradeoff. I can take the poor quality evf given how amazing the rest of the camera is.
Hey Rory! Great review and from a wedding videographer’s point of view! Wanted to ask: can you actually run the S5 on a PowerBank? The info I got online is that you can’t (only S1 series). So, which powerbank are you using? And is it a USB-C to USB-C or regular USB to USB-C? Many thanks.
You definitely can. I've run it on all sorts of power banks both expensive and cheap and nasty never had an issue. Just run it into the USB-C port on the camera. It will charge the battery when the camera is off and use the USB power when it's on
Hi Rory, thank you for the review. I want to know if there are multiple people in a wedding and one guest is moving across the frame (in whichever form, diagonally/horizontally across etc) if we tap on the subject, will it track the subject without pulsing and losing focus (both are important). As you know in certain weddings there can be a lot of people (especially Indian wedding) and through the commotion if I want to track one single person, a Canon and Sony does it well but before I take a call on Panasonic, I want to know this. And especially with Sigma lenses as Panasonic doesn't have fast zooms. Thank you
No unfortunately it won't do that, certainly not accurately. That being said the situation you are describing I wouldn't trust any camera in. For weddings manual focus is still king even when using canon or Sony. I would just never trust a camera to do what I am more than capable of doing myself for an unrepeatable moment.
There’s a massive discount on it for me that drops it to £1.4K with kit lens. I already own a blackmagic 4K but I’m thinking of something that can do good stills. I’ll always use manual focus so not don’t care about AF. I think I’m making the push for it
The bmpcc 4k was another camera I was considering when I bought this one. Pretty much went this way for the same reason. Amazing stills camera and the af for photos works great. If you can get it at a good price you won't be disappointed. Be aware that kit lens while very good for a kit lens is still just a kit lens.
@@RoryandCasey Yes, the plan is to get the discount on the lens and sell it. Did the maths, I'd get like £90 back which I can invest in an adapter to fit my EF lenses.
Yeah awesome! Not a bad plan at all! I'd also now consider the S1. They just had a huge firmware update that gave it a lot of the same features. But you need to buy the vlog code.
I'm still using the Zhiyun Crane 2. It handles the weight of the camera and 24-70 lens perfectly fine and still gives me great shots so I see no need to upgrade it!
Sorry guys there seems to have been a few glitches in RUclipss uploading compression! Hopefully you still find it very useful!

No worries! For great 1080p you would struggle to beat the GH5 even today. Too many cameras focussing on 4, 6 or even 8k

At around 16 minutes you said the "AVF" on the camera sucks. I am not sure what AVF that you were referring to. Would you mind clarifying?
Might be my Aussie Accent 🤣 I actually said EVF, the electronic viewfinder.

Question: can the shutter speed be locked to a minimum when shooting in aperture priority?
Know this is a late reply, but yes! It has both a minimum SS and a maximum ISO limiting feature when shooting aperture prio.
@@teejayyz thank you. Better late than never.
Sorry Phil I completely missed this question! As the above person said yes it can.

I run mine pretty bare bones. Mostly it's just a cage and a mic and occasionally a monitor or gimbal.
At 6.34 some thing happened in the video
Oh thanks for pointing that out. Must be a RUclips glitch as the source file is fine!
