Edwin Reuben Hawkins (August 19, 1943 - January 15, 2018) was an American gospel musician, pianist, choir master, composer, and arranger. He was one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound. He was probably best known for his arrangement of "Oh Happy Day" (1968-69), which was included on the "Songs of the Century" list. "Oh Happy Day" rocketed to sales of more than a million copies within two months. It crossed over to the pop charts, making U.S. No. 4, UK No. 2, Canada No. 2, No. 2 on the Irish Singles Chart, and No. 1 on the French Singles Charts and the German Singles Charts in 1969. It then became an international success, selling more than 7 million copies worldwide, and Hawkins was awarded his first Grammy for it.
It became no. 1 in the Dutch Top 40 on 7 June 1969.
The American gospel music singer Dorothy Combs Morrison (born Dorothy Marie Combs, May 8, 1944) sang lead vocal on the song "Oh Happy Day". In the 1960s she joined the Edwin Hawkins singers. She toured with Edwin Hawkins, Van Morrison, Boz Scaggs, and Delaney and Bonnie, among others.

Before I knew Christ, I attended a rock concert at the Fillmore in San Francisco around 1969. For whatever reason they had the Northern California Youth Choir singing (they mainly only featured rock bands)and they sang this awesome song. I felt something tugging at my heart when they sang. About 1 year later Jesus washed all my sins away! ❤️

@@lyndamarshall9313 The original lead singer is Dorothy Combs Morrison (b. 1944) of Richmond, CA. When "Oh Happy Day" blew up, she left the group almost immediately to venture into a solo career. Edwin's maternal first cousin Shirley [née King] Miller was the most logical replacement, although her voice wasn't as low as Dorothy's.

One of the greatest events in my life was the concert I attended at The prestigious O'KEEFE CENTRE in Toronto in the summer of 1970, (I think) when as a student I got a standby @2.00 ticket to see Jose Feliciano, and his opening act, The Edwin Hawkins Singers. Will always remember it...The fellow playing the bongos was in the lobby at intermission, amongst other participants, but he sure had the majority of fans in his corner.

I like this Shirley Miller version the best. Her voice and demeanor are soul-stirring, humble, non-commercial. It feels like Jesus on the cross, truthful and honest.
Dorothy Morrison’s version is more joyful, flamboyant. But, this version by Shirley, calms me, humbles me and brings me to communion with Jesus.
