    Great tutorial, it’s so very important part of beautiful skating, but it’s often neglected and people want to learn only jumps. I think it’s especially important for adult skaters, we will never impress people with triple jumps, but we still can be great at moving beautiful.
    I also notice many beginner skaters are dropping their elbows, I mean their arms look like they are praying to heaven. Or they forget to move their head together with arms movements. I would be nice to see some choreography ideas for arms in future tutorials, almost no one does such tutorials.

      So true about the importance for adult skaters: I sometimes get "You're so graceful!" comments from casual skaters, which is a nice ego boost when I'm failing to get any momentum on my edge pulls. 🤣The biggest arm challenge I have is that when I'm tense (ie any time I'm learning/practising a new skill) my shoulders tend to come up to my ears so I need to work on pulling my shoulder blades back and down.

      I am so glad you found the tutorial helpful! I agree with the head needing to move with the arms. I will touch on that in a future video for sure!

    I really like your postures,it looks beautiful and flowy. I have seen many coaches that have a really stiff arm movements. Yours look just like ballet. Thank you for sharing your tips and tricks

    This is an extremely important concept. I'm American of Russian heritage, and the Russians are famous especially in ballet and they translate this into figure skating as well for having gorgeous upper body as well as lower body in ballet and figure skating. Body Lines are key!!! Often when I see the American skaters I see them with stick arms and wooden backs. For the arms, they just do not have the fluidity and the beautiful movements and expression, and instead keep their arms fixated outwards and stiff, and also neglect ballet hands. For the back, they are stiff in the back, do not express enough agility and movement when they are making upper body movements. All of these things are extremely important and are one of the reasons why Kamila Valieva is so highly regarded is probably the most beautiful figure skater in history. Jumps are great, but when you have these other elements it makes you outstanding and gorgeous to watch.

    gee I feel self-conscious just skating with my arms out in public, it does give you more room for the rude who go by to fast. I often push them away. Being so on guard is not expressive. Now the toddlers are geared up in the hockey padding and they can do what they please cutting you off in the center ring. Then they fall in front of you, or with those push carts.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Год назад +3

      No need to feel self conscious, I understand that it is easy to feel like people are watching or judging. But just go out there with the confidence of knowing what you are trying to achieve. Having nice arms is going to help you better achieve whatever goal you are going for.

    Oh yeah. As a male skater who is a computer scientist in real life and started at the age of 28, my movements resemble a mix of penguin, meerkat and pot-bellied pig 😝
    I'll definitely try to add snake-like arms 😍

      I'm a gay guy but feel too gay doing skating choreography as an adult male skater. I know Jonny weir and Adam rippon are amazing skaters, but I don't want to look that way.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Год назад +6

      @jrg305 There are so many amazing male skaters, gay and not gay who perform beautifully without the flair Weir and Rippon bring to the ice. Skaters who show both strength and grace, but in their own style. That is what you need to find, a style that allows you to be expressive in your own way.

      You should watch ballet with Isabella videos. She is a British ballerina that was trained in Russia and so she has gorgeous upper body movements as a result. This is so very important to be a complete figure skater and to be considered beautiful to look at. Kamila Valieva is so beloved because of this, her extensive ballet training, her command of her body and fluidity from toes to fingertips. Really watch ballet with Isabella videos and practice at home! ❤❤❤

    Thanks Julia for this video. My other coach said the other day that it's about time to get started on a little program! No, I still can't do a forward scratch spin, but 1 out of 100 attempts I manage to get a few rotations. Back scratch spins are a little better as I get a few rotations more often than not, but they still look really ugly. I guess she wanted to get me motivated to work super hard on the spins. (Gotta confess that I didn't put in as much effort into spins as I did into jumps and footwork) That being said, this video on arms should add some detail to my program.
    On another note, and this one I've been asking quite a few times, can you do a tutorial on how to do a less curvy 3 turn for flip jump entry? I always practiced 3 turns on half circles, and can't seem to do a turn along a flat line...I'm thinking of trying LFI counter turns for the flip jump entry since the free leg motion is less whipped. Would this be a good idea?

    Hi, Coach Julia. Thank you for continuing to produce high quality skating videos. Great tips as always.
    My issue - my arms always get lost. Any tips for remembering which arm should be forward for each basic skill? For forward inside vs outside edges, is it same-arm or opposite-arm forward as the skating leg?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Год назад +1

      I always teach... Same arm for outside, Opposite arm for Inside. It's hard to really have a sneaky way of remembering that though.

    Reminds me of ballet class 🩰👍 I have wondered about difficulty due to absence of mirrors inside rinks, in contrast to many dance classes. 🪞

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  Год назад +2

      That is definitely an advantage of working in a studio, you usually have mirrors to aid you. Most rinks share the ice with hockey so those mirrors wouldn't last long. I do occasionally see rinks with mirrors and am so jealous. lol.
