How to ‘Check’ and Control your Jumps, Spins, and Footwork

  • You are going to hear the term ‘Checking’ quite a lot in your skating journey. Your coaches and instructors will tell you to check out of jumps and spins, and check during footwork elements and Moves In The Field. For figure skaters checking is defined as... “ Stopping or Controlling Rotation” . So when you land a jump or finish a spin, you will want to check out to stop the rotation. With footwork you will use a checking motion to control the rotation of the turn. Without using proper checking technique, you will not be able to maintain control of your body.

Loving this! I'm sure it's going to help me now I can finally spin :D Sometimes I go wild and think I'm going to try a mohawk or a 3-turn and I'm so shocked when it works aaaaahhhh I'm going backwards lol. Wednesday I had the entire rink to myself. I couldn't have been any happier!!! Finally practiced going backwards.

I have been having a hard time with my back scratch. I am so excited to try this exercise to get my balance. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼. I feel good about checking my jumps and spins (the small ones that I do), now let's see if I can get 3-4 rotations with my back spins. Thank you ❤️

Thank you so much for making this video coach Julia! I have trouble with checking. It wasn’t clear to me what to do with my arms. I always had one arm going up and the back and I didn’t know why this was happing. I guess I was reaching up to try to stop rotation instead of out.
Also, these exercises are amazing! These are so strengthening and perfect to practice on or off ice. Thanks again.

If you (for some reason) try figure skating on the hockey skates like I did, you know, just for fun, I would not recommend this, aspecially when you mess up the element.
In short, I somehow slipped forward on my arm and dislocated shoulder (about half year to return to skating, if ever, I am old for this :-D )
The fall was relatively controlled and soft fall, I fell this way many times, but the position of one hand in front, both legs behind the center of gravity, make you falling full weight on stretched arm with some extra force, which may dislocate your shoulder.
I did this many times (I was skating for a year, no precision but it was many times) and I considered myself 100% sure in this, until I checked out of spiral (the one where you hold your fre leg skate), the spiral seemed all good, but I did not feel comfortable in it from the start, the ice was somehow overfrozen and also scratched a lot.
Just telling my personal experience, I have believed such thing cannot happen to me in such a simple element.
    Stay safe!

hello! i recently started figure skating and it’s a lot of fun! i have a question i’m hoping you can help with! i’m finding it hard to do a one foot glide! i’m also finding it hard not to lean onto my inside/outside edges... i don’t know what to do! if you can help, thanks! and your vids are great and super helpful, i’ve learnt a lot! thanks :)

    • @CoachJulia

Hey Callmeshyn:D , Thanks for watching my videos! It is a bit of a challenge to pinpoint the exact problem without seeing you skate. You may want to try sending me a video to watch and then I can get back to you with exact recommendations. You can set that up via my booking site... skatingcoachjulia.simplybook.me/v2/#book
Without seeing you skate, I can guess that it is possible you are not keeping your ankle up straight over your blade. This could be for a number of reasons, maybe you need more ankle support in your skates. maybe you need to do some balance exercises off Ice? You may also be pushing your hips to much to one side or the other? So sorry I can't be more helpful. I hope you have figured it out! 😁

I'm still quite new at this and am wondering about applying this to a beginning two-foot spin. So far all I do is just continue until I either come to a stop or (all too often) fall down. I'm trying to work out how to gracefully end the spin. Do I just pick up the right foot (I spin clockwise) and extend leg and arms to the check position or am I misunderstanding? Mind you, right now the problem is more continuing to spin rather than stopping, but I'm hoping to change that. ;)
