  • Hello Skaters! Today I am going to be answering some more of you questions and skating struggles you shared with me a few weeks ago in this video... • Solving Your Biggest F... where I asked your biggest skating challenges. I saw a themes among the responses and one of those was that so many of you are going up onto your toe pick in a One Foot Spin and aren't sure how to fix that. In this video I am giving you 3 drills to help you find a better spinning position as you strengthen your foot to spin. Come back next week, when I will give you a few off-ice exercises to help strengthen your foot and improve your balance.

    I am not learning 1 ft spins yet, I am trying to learn 2, but all the advice you gave about how to evolve from the middle of your foot to the rocker has helped IMMENSELY! I keep scratching my pick, losing control, and losing balence and I could not for the life of me figure out why and got extremely frustrated. With this new advice, you have brought my confidence up knowing what I'm doing is normal, and to not give up! Thank you as always coach Julia!!

      One tip that helped me immediately with my 2 foot spin is to keep my knees bent during the spin. Yes, if you're good, you're going to stand up straight so you spin faster, but you're not good yet. Standard technique is to bend your knees as you do the pivot to get the spin started. It helps to bend the knees like that, but keep them bent as you spin. Somehow that helps shift your weight back on the blade, away from the toe pick. Of course, on your left foot you need to keep the heel of the blade off the ice, that's a given. Hopefully you know that you should spin near the toe of the blade on the left foot and on the heel of the right foot. My coach advised me to keep my knees bent, don't stand up straight, and it helped me immediately. Another tip is to practive the spin slowly. It's easier to spin slow than it is to spin fast. You don't need a lot of speed to spin. If you hit the sweet spot you will spin effortlessly even at a slow speed. So leave your arms fully outstretched for 5 revolutions. I have found that by spinning slowly I can adjust my blades during the spin and I can easily feel when I get it right, it's like magic and the blades lose all friction with the ice. Coach Julia instructs, but other coaches do not, to point the right toe in while spinning. I have been working on this by practicing off ice pointing the right toe in hard, pushing the right heel out, and pointing the right knee in so that my knees touch. During my spin I focus on doing all that. Pointing the toe in feels odd and is difficult. Thinking of it as pushing the heel out is more do-able. Getting that right blade angled inwards makes a magical difference. I love to spin slowly! And I get good feedback from bystanders, saying that my spin looks "very controlled."

    As always an awesome teaching. I am not a figure skater but am a sharpening technician that has seen to many blades that are flattened to the point that no balance point is found without pick interference. New blades may be required. Skaters and coaches need to be sure that the sharpening technician knows how to check for and prevent this issue.

      Pipe dream. No skating student can judge the quality of a sharpening job or technician. Probably 99% of coaches can't either, but even if they could, at $45 for a half hour lesson no coach will ever look at your blades.

    Thank you so much Coach Julia. 1FS’s were really getting discouraging. Like, I’ve been making pretty good progress with Waltz and 1S jumps, but still look totally pathetic with 1FS’s, almost to the point that my coach wants to give up on me. I hope these tips can bring some progress.

      Dawg if ur coach is about to give up on you, find a new coach, because I know damn well a coach should be trying to look for what you're doing wrong and telling you how to fix it. I had been coached by a few people who never gave me tips on how to fix (mainly 1F stuff) and it sucked so bad. My ice rink buddies are better coaches I swear.

    • @blueskies773

      If a coach is ready for that because of your spin, your coach is failing to see where they’re not directing you properly.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 6 месяцев назад +1

      My experience is that the quality of in person ice coaches is extremely low. It's like they are intentionally dragging you along and not telling you crucial tips in order to drag out your training for years. Also it seems like the group classes are a joke, just there as a drag net to snare people into expensive private lessons, and they intentionally give you very little effective coaching, You will learn more from RUclips than any in person coach, that's a given. However only an in person coach can see what you are doing wrong, which may be unsharp or misaligned blades, or flat feet etc. You need to look for additional coaching but if you only have one rink in town that will be uncomfortable, not to mention expensive.

    • @yjchoi17
      @yjchoi17 6 месяцев назад

      @@TheLarryBrown Time has passed since my comment. Since then, I got my 1FS pretty okay, but struggling with forward and backward scratch spins. Everything else about my coach is okay. It's just spins that sometimes I question her, like you said, that she's intentionally teaching me the wrong way to do it.
      Specifically, arm positions. I've watched advanced skaters at the rink, all sorts of video tutorials, even read textbooks about the spin and it seems you have your arms to the sides when you start spinning. (Swing your left arm from front to the side) Every time I do that, coach gets mad and says the left arm should be kept in front of my chest. Then she demonstrates and proves that it works like that. So I have no other choice but to follow and fail...

      Clenching your toes might mean that the muscles at the bottom of your feet are overworking to compensate for weakness in the muscles on top of your feet and / or ankles. Aside from muscle strengthening exercises, padding / orthotics underneath the metatarsal joints (ball of the feet) might help you to sit further back towards your heel. Might be worth seeing a podiatrist?

      It does sound like your weight is too far to the front of your skate. Most of the time when skating backward you want your weight through the middle of your foot. Try doing some two-foot glides backwards and see if you can move your weight just behind the rocker so it is more under your arch.

I’ve actually been thinking of a slight ‘releve’ as I rise up (to use a ballet term) to push down into the ball if my foot. Is that not correct? How in the world do you “lift up your toes” without moving your weight backwards?

    • @CoachJulia

      well, instead of doing a full flex, try standing barefoot and lifting just your toes off the ground, while keeping the ball off your foot still planted. Coupled with the adjustment I made to my insole, I can now skate a straight line and do both inside and outside edges. These adjustments are much easier than moving blades. I use felt insoles, and the adjustment I've made is inserting thin pieces of felt, loose wool, and thin foam pieces to the inside areas under the insole until I feel my arch is not collapsing inwards.

    Thank you! I’ve been skating for almost two years, and I’ve landed my single axel on ice, as well as my double toe off the ice. I can even do variations of twizzles. However, spinning has been the greatest challenge. Forward sits, camels, and especially scratches have been a struggle. So much so, that my coach and I have going back to the one foot spin to correct the errors in the entrance. I’ve worked on these on my own, and with my coach, but it’s only been getting worse. We’re both very confused, and disappointed, as the spin progress is hindering the progression into doubles. Do you have any tips?

    As you spin should you be lifting the hip of the spinning leg or dropping it to put more pressure down into the foot? I know you said to lift the hip of the free leg but then on the first exercise you said push the weight down on the glide, does this apply in the spin too?

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 4 месяца назад

      When coaches talk about pushing down they are talking about the knee. The skating hip is a non-issue, you don't need to think about it...but you do need to lift the hip of the free leg.

    What depth do you get your skates sharpened? I want deep edges and grip, but was told that deep edges make blades slippery-er.... 🤔?

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 4 месяца назад

      No....that's silly. Deep edges make the edges bite into the ice more, the opposite of slippery. I sharpen my skates as shallow as possible. When sharpened deeper it makes hockey stop harder and also makes them draggy and slow and I hate that.

    Hi Coach Julia, I was just wondering does this exercise applies to backspin? So do we just switch to right inside edge?

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  2 года назад

      It would definitely apply to the back spin! A back spin happens on a right back inside edge, so if you just make that switch, you can apply these exercises.

    I have a problem of getting on toe pick on a two foot spin. Will these exercises help with the two foot spin as well, or there will be a different technique?

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 6 месяцев назад

      Try keeping your knees bent while doing your two foot spin. That will help you stay off your toe pick. It's ok to lightly drag the toe pick, although you eventually want to avoid that.

  • @urfavscorpio3168
    @urfavscorpio3168 Год назад

    i already started learning the scratch but i feel like i have missed a step on learning the regular spin, it is hard for me to get balance and speed, when i straighten my leg (that's on the ice) while spinning i almost stop and i don't know what i have to improve. it feels like i can't find the balance on the ball of my foot like that part of the blade that we have to spin

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 6 месяцев назад

      How many revolutions can you do? You should be able to do more than 10 easily. Watch Coach Julia's video on the spin and you'll probably see what you're doing wrong. Toe of left foot, heel of right root, right toe pointing in.

  • @cranma0125
    @cranma0125 6 месяцев назад

    This is a big problem for me. I'm a beginner skater, and still working on two foot spins. It's always my left toe pick skratching the ice. I've done off ice two foot spins a few times, on one of the big spinners, and I also fall forward on that... My trainer (I take group lessons) told me I need to strengthen my core more

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 4 месяца назад

      Forget about strengthening your core. That's patent BS. Off ice spinner is irrelevant for a beginning spinner...forget about that. Realize that your left skate is skating in backwards circles. If you are dragging your toe pick, concentrate on putting the weight in the middle of your foot, right on the arch. At most you are just trying to barely lift the heel of the left blade off the ice. Realize that you are not trying to spin on the left blade on a single point on the ice...rather, the left blade needs to SKATE, not spin, in small circles in a backwards direction. One way to force that is the practice 2 foot spin with the feet far apart, that will force you to spin around a point that is equidistant between your two feet. Also practice putting weight on the right foot. A proper two foot spin will have weight equal on both feet, but a common mistake is to have most of your weight on your left foot.

    • @cranma0125
      @cranma0125 4 месяца назад

      @@TheLarryBrown Appreciate the advice, but the "patent bs" you refer to, is also not entirely correct. I've progressed fast the last couple months, and moved on to one foot spins and a little baby scratch spin. The issues I originally refered to is no longer a big problem. I worked on strengthening my core and practicing off ice spins, and there's a huge difference in my on-ice spins now. More speed, stability and revolutions. I'm able to lift my arms over my head too. I'm one of the only ones in my beginner skating-friendgroup who practices regularly on an off ice spinner, and there's a very big difference, even though we've been skating for the same amount of time. Off ice spinners also help with getting used to the feeling of dizziness etc.
      Engaging my core is probably what helped me the most tho.
      However, it's true most of my weight was on my left foot during my two foot spins, but keeping my core engaged also helped my balance which has made it much better.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 3 месяца назад

      @@cranma0125You didn't strengthen your core much in two months, if at all. What happened is you improved your technique and learned how to spin. How many revolutions were you at when you originally posted and how many are you at now?

  • @jds2620
    @jds2620 2 года назад

    When you are doing the 3 positions going forward, do you straighten your standing leg after entrance? It is hard to tell on the video.

    • @CoachJulia
      @CoachJulia  2 года назад +1

      Yes, you want to straighten by the time you are in the spin position, but it does not need to be fully straightened during the 'centering' position.

    Can small boots (bit small or tight for my foot) effect my spin??

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown 6 месяцев назад +1

      If your boots are too small you will get red marks on your feet. If you're getting red marks, you need to do something about it. Take the boots to the skate shop and then may be able to "punch" them to make more room where they are too tight. Your skates probably have a removable insert. Take that out and you can see how your foot fits on that, and you can get an idea if it's too small. If your skates are really too small for you, time for a new pair.
